The safest fix is to identify the program requesting it and repair or reinstall that exact Qt-based application instead of downloading a replacement DLL.
What this file actually does
Qt5DesignerComponents.dll belongs to the Qt Tools and Designer ecosystem. Qt Widgets Designer is used to design graphical interfaces, and the library can be included with standalone Qt Designer, Qt Creator, development tools, Python or Qt utilities, game editors, and other third-party programs built with Qt.

The file may be installed in locations such as:
- A Qt installation under a version and compiler directory, commonly inside
bin - Qt Creator’s own
bindirectory - An application’s private installation folder
- An MSYS2, MinGW, or other package-manager directory
- A developer’s application deployment folder
It does not normally belong in C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64. The filename alone also cannot tell you the correct version, architecture, compiler, or application. Qt 5 builds can differ between 32-bit and 64-bit systems and between MSVC and MinGW toolchains.

Causes and fixes at a glance
| What you observe | Most likely cause | Best first action |
|---|---|---|
| Error appears when Qt Designer or Qt Creator starts | Damaged or incomplete Qt installation | Repair or reinstall the matching Qt component |
| Error appears after updating or moving an application | Files were removed or paths changed | Use the application’s Repair or Verify option |
| Your own Qt program fails on another computer | Deployment omitted Qt libraries or plugins | Rebuild the package with matching windeployqt |
| The file exists, but Windows says the specified module cannot be found | A dependency is missing | Check the other Qt and compiler runtime DLLs |
| Error began after antivirus activity | The file was quarantined | Review Protection history and reinstall if necessary |
| A 32-bit program receives a 64-bit Qt DLL, or vice versa | Architecture mismatch | Install or deploy the matching architecture |
| An MSVC program receives MinGW Qt files | Compiler mismatch | Rebuild or install the matching compiler build |
| Other Windows components are also failing | Possible broader system corruption | Run DISM and SFC as fallback diagnostics |
Fix 1: Identify the program that needs the file
Start here before copying anything.
- Read the full error window and note the executable name, if shown.
- Close the message.
- Open the affected program’s shortcut location:
- Right-click its shortcut.
- Select Properties.
- On the Shortcut tab, read the Target field.
- If there is no useful shortcut, press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager.
- Start the affected program again.
- In Task Manager, right-click the relevant process and choose Open file location.
- Record the application folder and whether the executable appears to be a Qt tool, a game editor, a Python application, or your own program.
Next, search the application folder for:
Qt5Core.dllQt5Gui.dllQt5Widgets.dllQt5Designer.dllQt5Xml.dllQt5DesignerComponents.dll
If most of these files are missing, the installation is incomplete. If Qt5DesignerComponents.dll exists but the program still fails, the problem may be a missing dependency, incompatible architecture, or incompatible compiler build.
Do not assume that a copy found elsewhere on the computer is suitable. The requesting executable determines which Qt build belongs with it.
Fix 2: Repair or reinstall the owning application
This is the most likely solution for standalone Designer, Qt Creator, a game editor, or another packaged application.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteUse a built-in repair option
- Press Windows + I to open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Choose Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on Windows 10.
- Find the affected Qt-based program.
- Select the three-dot menu on Windows 11, or select the program on Windows 10.
- Choose Advanced options if available.
- Select Repair.
- Start the application again.
If the program has no Repair option, open its own installer or launcher and look for Repair, Modify, Verify, or Verify integrity. A game or third-party launcher should verify its private files rather than borrowing Qt DLLs from another application.
Reinstall from the original source
If repair does not restore the file:
- Save your projects and configuration files.
- Uninstall the affected program from Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Restart Windows.
- Download the installer from the original vendor or the official Qt installer source.
- Install the same product family and required component, such as Qt Tools or Designer.
- Start the program from its newly installed shortcut.
For a Qt installation, the Qt Maintenance Tool may be able to add or repair the installed Qt Tools component. If the original installation was moved manually, reinstalling to a stable path is safer than changing PATH entries one at a time.
If the error belongs to a third-party application, reinstall that application instead. Its private Qt files may have been built and tested as a matched set.
Fix 3: Check antivirus quarantine
Security software can remove or quarantine one file while leaving the rest of the application in place.
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Look for an event involving the affected application or
Qt5DesignerComponents.dll. - Open the event and inspect its path.
- Restore or allow the file only if it came from a trusted, verified installation.
- Reopen the application.
Microsoft explains Protection history and quarantine actions in its Windows Security Protection history guidance.
If you are unsure whether the file is genuine, do not restore it blindly. Remove the damaged application, scan the computer, and reinstall the program from its official source. If Defender immediately quarantines the restored file again, the application may be damaged or the detection may require investigation by the application vendor.
Fix 4: Match Qt version, architecture, and compiler
A replacement must match the application. Three details matter.
Qt 5 versus Qt 6
The name begins with Qt5, so the requesting program expects a Qt 5 library. Qt 6 files are not interchangeable with Qt 5 files merely because they perform similar functions. Do not place a Qt 6 library beside a Qt 5 executable.
32-bit versus 64-bit
A 32-bit application needs 32-bit Qt libraries. A 64-bit application needs 64-bit Qt libraries.
To check the application architecture, inspect its documentation or installer, or use a trusted executable inspection utility. Do not infer the architecture only from whether Windows itself is 64-bit. A 64-bit version of Windows can run 32-bit programs.

MSVC versus MinGW
Qt applications may be built with different compiler toolchains. An MSVC build should receive the matching MSVC Qt package, while a MinGW build should receive the matching MinGW package. These builds are not interchangeable.
If the error appeared after installing a second Qt version, check whether PATH now points to the wrong bin directory. In a Command Prompt, you can inspect the current path with:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
echo %PATH%
Remove stale Qt entries from System Properties > Advanced > Environment Variables only if you understand which installation the application requires. For a packaged application, its own directory should normally supply its private Qt libraries.
Fix 5: Restore a developer application with windeployqt
If you built the affected program yourself, the release package may not contain all required Qt files.
Open a Command Prompt and run the windeployqt.exe from the same Qt installation and compiler kit used to build the application. For example:
windeployqt C:pathtoyour-app.exe
A complete example might look like this:
"C:Qt5.x.xmsvc2019_64binwindeployqt.exe" C:BuildsMyAppreleaseMyApp.exe
Replace the paths with your actual Qt installation and executable. Do not copy that example path literally.
Recommended Free Tools
Then:
- Make a clean copy of the application’s release directory.
- Run the matching
windeployqt.exeagainst the release executable. - Confirm that the required Qt libraries appear beside the executable.
- Check that plugin folders are created where required.
- Launch the application from that clean directory.
- Test it on a computer that does not have your development Qt installation in
PATH.
Qt’s deployment utility can scan the executable and copy required Qt libraries, plugins, compiler runtime files, and the relevant Designer components. If the program uses a plugin, copying only the named DLL may still leave the application unable to start.
Fix 6: Install the matching Microsoft Visual C++ runtime
If the error also mentions MSVCP140.dll, VCRUNTIME140.dll, or another Visual C++ runtime file, the Qt DLL may be present but unable to load its compiler dependency.
- Determine whether the application is 32-bit or 64-bit.
- Download the corresponding package from Microsoft’s latest supported Visual C++ Redistributable page.
- Run the installer.
- Accept the license and complete setup.
- Restart the affected application.
Install the x86 runtime for a 32-bit application and the x64 runtime for a 64-bit application. Installing the Visual C++ runtime does not recreate Qt5DesignerComponents.dll; it only supplies a possible dependency.
If the application was built with MinGW, installing the Visual C++ Redistributable may not address its runtime requirements. Use the compiler and deployment package used to build the application.
Fix 7: Update or reinstall related drivers only when evidence points there
A graphics or device driver is not the normal owner of Qt5DesignerComponents.dll. Use Device Manager only if the Qt application began failing alongside display, chipset, or device errors.
- Right-click the Start button.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the relevant category, such as Display adapters.
- Right-click the device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if prompted.
For a clean driver repair, download the driver from the device manufacturer or computer manufacturer, uninstall the existing package only when the vendor instructs you to, and install the matching Windows architecture.
Manually hunting through Device Manager can mean guessing which of dozens of drivers is stale and repeating the same checks without knowing what changed. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers; its free scan shows what it found, while driver installation is handled by the full version. Reinstalling the Qt-owning application remains the definitive fix when that application is the source of the missing file.

SFC and DISM do not normally restore a missing Qt library because it is an application file, not a protected Windows component. Use these commands when other Windows files or features are also malfunctioning.

- Run this command and wait for it to finish:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Test the affected application again.
Microsoft provides further guidance for DISM image repair and System File Checker.
These commands may report that no integrity violations were found. That result does not prove the Qt installation is healthy. Repair or reinstall the owning application if the error remains.
SFC and DISM can take time, and manually repeating them without knowing what changed makes diagnosis difficult. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for system issues and show what it found; the free scan identifies problems, while repair is handled by the full version. It is optional, and reinstalling the specific Qt application remains the correct fix for this missing file.
Do not use System32 or regsvr32
Do not copy Qt5DesignerComponents.dll into C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64. Qt applications normally load their private libraries from the application or Qt installation directory. System-wide copying can create conflicts between unrelated Qt versions.
regsvr32 is also generally not applicable. It is intended for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer; an ordinary Qt runtime library is not repaired by registering it. Running a command such as the following is therefore not a solution for this file:
regsvr32 Qt5DesignerComponents.dll
Microsoft documents the purpose and limitations of regsvr32.
Avoid random DLL download sites as well. An isolated file can contain malware, have the wrong architecture or compiler build, come from the wrong Qt version, or still fail because another dependency is missing. Use the original application installer, the official Qt installer, the application’s package manager, or a known-good build artifact.
If the error still appears
If every repair fails, record:
- The exact executable named in the error
- Its installation directory
- Whether it is 32-bit or 64-bit
- Whether it uses MSVC or MinGW
- The Qt DLLs present beside it
- Any additional missing DLL names
- The application’s log messages
- Whether the file exists but fails to load
A message saying “the specified module could not be found” can mean that Qt5DesignerComponents.dll exists but one of its dependencies does not. Use a reputable dependency inspection tool to examine the full chain, not just the named file.

FAQ
Is qt5designercomponents.dll a Windows file?
No. It is associated with Qt Designer and Qt Tools and is normally supplied by a Qt installation or another application that privately redistributes Qt.
Can I download the DLL by itself?
That is unsafe and often ineffective. The file must match the application’s Qt version, architecture, compiler, and dependency set. Repair the program that installed it instead.
Should I put it in System32?
No. Qt applications normally use libraries beside the executable or inside the relevant Qt installation directory.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Why does Windows say the specified module cannot be found when the file exists?
One of the DLL’s dependencies may be missing. Check the other Qt libraries and, for MSVC applications, the Visual C++ runtime.
Will SFC or DISM fix this error?
Usually not. They repair protected Windows components, while this is normally an application file. Run them when broader Windows corruption is also present.
Can a Qt 6 DLL replace this Qt 5 file?
No. Qt 5 and Qt 6 libraries should not be mixed.
Is regsvr32 required?
No, not for an ordinary Qt runtime library. Registering it is not the normal Qt deployment or repair method.
