iddbas32.dll Errors: Identify the BDE Driver Before Repairing

Length9 min Posted Quest giverVGSources Team

Start with this diagnostic checklist

Before replacing anything, find out:

  • Which application shows the error? The program named in the dialog is usually the owner of the missing runtime.
  • When did it start? Note whether it followed an uninstall, update, cleanup utility, system restore, antivirus detection, or a move to another PC.
  • Is the application 32-bit or 64-bit? iddbas32.dll is a 32-bit database driver. A 64-bit executable cannot load it directly.
  • Does the file exist somewhere on the PC? Search the application folder and shared Borland folders, not only C:WindowsSystem32.

The important point is that iddbas32.dll is not a Windows system DLL. It is the dBASE driver for the Borland Database Engine, or BDE, a deprecated database runtime used by older Delphi, C++Builder, Paradox, Visual dBASE, laboratory, engineering, and business applications.

The safest repair is to restore the complete BDE installation through the application that installed it. Copying a lone DLL into a Windows folder usually leaves the actual problem untouched.

1. Repair the application that requests iddbas32.dll

This is the fastest and most likely fix because BDE is more than a group of DLL files. Its installation can also create registry settings, database aliases, configuration files, and supporting drivers.

Use Windows 11’s repair option

  1. Press Windows + I to open Settings.
  2. Select Apps.
  3. Select Installed apps.
  4. Find the application named in the error.
  5. Select the three-dot menu beside it.
  6. Choose Advanced options.
  7. Select Repair, if available.
  8. Start the application again.

Windows may repair the program without removing its data. If there is no Advanced options entry or no Repair button, continue with the application’s original installer.

On Windows 10, open Settings > Apps > Apps & features, select the program, and look for Modify, Repair, or Change.

Reinstall from the application’s genuine installer

If repair is unavailable or fails:

  1. Back up the application’s data and database files.
  2. Uninstall the affected program from Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
  3. Restart Windows.
  4. Run the original installer supplied by the application’s developer or your organization’s software administrator.
  5. If the installer offers a BDE, database engine, runtime, or shared components option, leave it selected.
  6. Start the program once using Run as administrator if the application requires access to protected folders.
  7. Test the normal shortcut again.

Do not remove a shared Borland folder manually before checking whether another old application uses it. Several programs can depend on one BDE installation.

A successful repair normally means the application opens without the missing-file message and can access its database. If it starts but reports a missing alias, database driver, or configuration error, the DLL was only one part of the damaged installation. Run the complete vendor installer again rather than copying more individual files.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Check whether antivirus quarantined the file

An old BDE file is not automatically malware, but its origin still matters. If Windows Security removed it, restoring an arbitrary replacement is not safe.

  1. Open Start and search for Windows Security.
  2. Select Virus & threat protection.
  3. Select Protection history.
  4. Review entries related to the affected application or its installation folder.
  5. Expand an entry to see its action and location.

Restore the file only when all of the following are true:

  • It came from the application’s genuine installer.
  • The application developer or administrator confirms that the file belongs there.
  • A fresh scan does not identify the restored file as malicious.

Microsoft warns that a restored item can be detected again. If the file’s provenance is unclear, leave it quarantined and reinstall the application from clean, trusted installation media.

After reinstalling, add an exclusion only if the application developer specifically documents that requirement. Do not create a broad exclusion for C:Windows, System32, or an entire system drive.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Check the complete BDE installation

A typical BDE installation may include:

  • iddbas32.dll, the dBASE driver
  • idapi32.dll, the primary BDE engine
  • idpdx32.dll, the Paradox driver
  • idodbc32.dll, the ODBC driver
  • idr20009.dll
  • blw32.dll
  • Language files
  • idapi32.cfg
  • Registry configuration and database aliases

The exact set varies by application. Do not assume that every BDE program uses the same files or release.

Open File Explorer and check the program’s own directory and common shared locations such as:

C:Program FilesCommon FilesBorland SharedBDE

On 64-bit Windows, a 32-bit installation may instead be under:

C:Program Files (x86)

Some older applications keep their BDE files inside the application’s own folder.

If iddbas32.dll exists but the error says “The specified module could not be found,” another dependency may be absent. The message does not prove that the named DLL is the only missing component. A missing engine file, configuration file, alias, or registry entry can produce a similar failure.

The correct response is to rerun the complete application or BDE installer. Do not recreate BDE registry values from an unverified tutorial.

4. Confirm the 32-bit application and runtime match

The 32 in iddbas32.dll reflects the 32-bit BDE component. A 32-bit application can generally run on 64-bit Windows through Windows’ 32-bit compatibility layer, but a 64-bit executable cannot load a 32-bit DLL directly.

To inspect the application executable:

  1. Open the application’s installation folder.
  2. Right-click its main .exe file.
  3. Select Properties.
  4. Open the Compatibility tab.
  5. If the program is known to require an older Windows version, select Run this program in compatibility mode for and choose the version documented by the application vendor.
  6. Select Apply, then OK.

Compatibility mode cannot turn a 64-bit application into a 32-bit one, and it cannot replace BDE configuration. Install the architecture and runtime build supplied for that application.

Do not copy a random 32-bit DLL into both C:WindowsSystem32 and C:WindowsSysWOW64. Those folders have specific loader roles, and mixing BDE builds can break other applications.

5. Do not use regsvr32 as a general DLL repair

regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that provide registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. BDE database drivers are loaded through the BDE runtime and its configuration, not repaired by blindly registering each DLL.

Avoid running:

regsvr32 iddbas32.dll

unless the application developer explicitly tells you to do so and confirms that this file supports registration. A failed registration command does not prove that the file is fixed, and it can distract from a missing BDE installation.

Manual copying is appropriate only when the application developer supplies the complete runtime files and exact installation instructions. An isolated file from a download archive can be the wrong build, wrong architecture, incomplete, or modified.

6. Repair Windows components if other programs are also failing

SFC and DISM repair Windows components. They do not normally restore iddbas32.dll, because BDE is third-party software rather than a protected Windows component. These commands are still useful if the BDE error appeared alongside wider Windows corruption.

Run DISM

  1. Open Start.
  2. Search for Command Prompt.
  3. Right-click it and select Run as administrator.
  4. Run:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  1. Wait for the operation to complete.
  2. Restart Windows.

Run System File Checker

Open an elevated Command Prompt again and run:

sfc /scannow

Wait until verification reaches 100 percent, then restart the PC and test the application.

If Windows reports that it repaired corrupted files, check whether the application now starts. If SFC reports that it could not repair everything, repeat the BDE application repair rather than expecting SFC to supply the third-party DLL.

When manually running SFC and DISM, the difficult part is knowing which component changed and whether the result relates to the application. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for system problems and show what it identifies; its repair functions require the full version, and reinstalling the BDE application remains the definitive fix for this file.

7. Do not chase unrelated drivers or Windows Features

A missing BDE driver is a database-runtime problem, not normally a graphics, chipset, DirectX, or network-driver problem.

You can still check Windows Update for general system maintenance:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Windows Update.
  3. Select Check for updates.
  4. Install available updates and restart if requested.

For a hardware driver:

  1. Right-click Start.
  2. Select Device Manager.
  3. Expand the relevant hardware category.
  4. Right-click the device.
  5. Select Update driver.
  6. Choose Search automatically for drivers.

This will not install iddbas32.dll or reconstruct BDE. Avoid uninstalling working hardware drivers merely because the application reports this file.

Manually checking dozens of hardware-driver versions can be tedious when a separate device problem is also present. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify driver updates; installation through its full version is optional, and it will not replace the complete BDE runtime required by the affected application.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Likewise, Windows Features will not normally install BDE:

  1. Press Windows + R.
  2. Type optionalfeatures.
  3. Press Enter.
  4. Review the list without enabling random legacy components.

Only enable a Windows feature when the application’s documentation specifically requires it. Turning on .NET, legacy components, or another optional feature is not a substitute for the application’s BDE installer.

8. Use System Restore after a recent system change

If the error began immediately after an uninstall, cleanup operation, update, or driver change, System Restore may reverse the associated program and registry changes.

  1. Press Windows + R.
  2. Type:
rstrui.exe
  1. Press Enter.
  2. Select Next.
  3. Choose a restore point from before the error began.
  4. Select Scan for affected programs if available.
  5. Confirm the restore point and select Finish.

System Restore normally preserves personal files, but it can change installed programs, registry settings, and system files. After Windows restarts, test the application. If it still fails, use the application’s complete installer instead of repeatedly rolling the system backward.

Why random DLL downloads are a bad fix

Do not download iddbas32.dll from a random DLL website and place it in System32, SysWOW64, or the application folder.

That approach can fail because:

  • The file may be modified or malicious.
  • The version may not match the application’s other BDE files.
  • The architecture may be wrong.
  • Registry configuration and database aliases may still be missing.
  • The application may also need idapi32.dll, idapi32.cfg, language files, or other drivers.
  • Replacing a shared file can break another legacy application.

The safe source is the original application installer, the software developer’s supported BDE installer, or installation media supplied by your organization. BDE is deprecated and does not have the role of a modern Microsoft runtime.

If the repair still fails

Identify the exact executable named by the error and record:

  • Its installation folder
  • The BDE folder it uses
  • Whether iddbas32.dll exists there
  • Any second error mentioning aliases, drivers, or configuration
  • Whether another Windows user can run the program

Then ask the application’s developer or administrator for a compatible installer. If the software is business-critical and no longer supported, running it inside a properly maintained virtual machine may be safer than repeatedly changing a modern Windows installation.

FAQ

Is iddbas32.dll part of Windows?

No. It is a 32-bit dBASE driver for the Borland Database Engine and is installed by an older application or its runtime package.

Can I download just iddbas32.dll?

You should not. The complete application or BDE installation may be required, including registry configuration, aliases, engine files, and language files.

Should I copy it to System32 or SysWOW64?

No. Those folders are not a universal repair location. Use the application’s supported installer and preserve its intended BDE path.

Why does the file exist but still fail to load?

A dependency, configuration file, registry entry, database alias, or compatible BDE companion file may be missing. The named DLL is not always the complete cause.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Will regsvr32 iddbas32.dll fix the error?

Normally, no. BDE drivers are configured and loaded through BDE rather than treated as ordinary registered COM servers.

Will SFC or DISM restore this file?

Normally, no. They repair Windows components, while iddbas32.dll belongs to third-party BDE software.

Can a 64-bit Windows PC run the application?

Often, yes, if the application itself is 32-bit and its complete BDE runtime is installed correctly. A 64-bit executable cannot load this 32-bit driver directly.
