idr2000c.dll Won’t Start: Rebuild the Legacy BDE App Safely

idr2000c.dll is usually a resource or message file from the legacy Borland Database Engine, or BDE. It is not a Windows component, Microsoft Visual C++ file, DirectX file, or .NET runtime.

The safest fix is to identify the application that is requesting the file, then repair or reinstall that application with its original installer. Do not start by downloading a loose copy of idr2000c.dll or copying one into System32.

Before you replace anything

Read the complete error message and note the executable named in it. The important part may look like this:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
program.exe - Bad Image
C:PathIDR2000C.dll was not found

Also note the folder shown in the message. The failing executable, not the DLL filename alone, identifies which installation must be repaired.

Check these locations in File Explorer:

  • C:Program FilesCommon FilesBorland SharedBDE
  • The folder where the affected application is installed
  • A product-specific BDE or Paradox folder

The file has been found with older applications such as DigitalNystagView, AURIS, Patient Manager, and NUM Tool Workshop. These examples do not establish that any one program exclusively owns the file. The same BDE component can be used by unrelated legacy applications.

Fix 1: Repair the application that reports the error

Time needed: 5–15 minutes

This is the most likely solution because the application installer should restore the complete BDE installation, not just one file.

Through Windows Settings

  1. Press Windows + I.
  2. Select Apps.
  3. Select Installed apps.
  4. Find the program named in the error.
  5. Select the three-dot menu beside it.
  6. Choose Advanced options, if shown.
  7. Select Repair.
  8. Restart Windows and launch the program again.

If Repair is not available, use the desktop-program method:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Press Windows + R.
  2. Type appwiz.cpl.
  3. Press Enter.
  4. Select the affected program.
  5. Choose Repair, Change, or a similarly named option.
  6. Follow the installer prompts.
  7. Restart the application.

A successful repair should allow the original program to open without the idr2000c.dll message. It may also restore other BDE files, aliases, and configuration entries that a loose DLL cannot provide.

If repair fails, continue with a complete reinstall.

Fix 2: Reinstall the complete BDE application

Time needed: 15–30 minutes

Do this when the program was recently uninstalled, updated, copied from another computer, cleaned up, or partially removed.

  1. Back up any documents or databases used by the application.
  2. Locate the original installer, installation disc, deployment package, or official publisher download.
  3. Close the affected program.
  4. Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
  5. Uninstall the affected application.
  6. If it is not listed there, open appwiz.cpl and uninstall it from Programs and Features.
  7. Restart Windows.
  8. Run the original installer as administrator:
  9. Right-click the installer.
  10. Select Show more options, if necessary.
  11. Select Run as administrator.
  12. Accept the application’s normal installation location unless its publisher documents another location.
  13. Start the program and test the operation that previously failed.

For applications that separately provide a BDE installer, use the BDE package supplied for that exact application. Current licensed RAD Studio users may receive a product-specific BDE installer through the Embarcadero customer portal, but there is no universal Microsoft package for idr2000c.dll.

Do not mix BDE files from different products, languages, or releases. BDE configuration is shared and stored in the registry, so an incorrect installation can affect other programs that use the engine.

If the application is used for medical, industrial, accounting, or other important work, contact its publisher before removing BDE. Another installed program may depend on the same shared engine.

Fix 3: Check whether antivirus quarantined the file

Time needed: 5–10 minutes

Windows Security may remove or quarantine an old file if it detects suspicious behavior. Do not immediately disable protection.

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Windows Security.
  3. Open it.
  4. Select Virus & threat protection.
  5. Select Protection history.
  6. Review recent entries for the application folder or IDR2000C.dll.
  7. Open a matching entry and review its details.

Restore the file only when all of the following are true:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • You recognize the parent application.
  • The installer came from the publisher or original licensed media.
  • The file belongs in that application’s installation directory.
  • You have scanned the installer and system.

If Windows Security offers Restore, use it only after confirming those points. Then repair or reinstall the entire application rather than relying on the restored file alone.

If the file is repeatedly quarantined, leave it removed, scan the installer and the full computer, and contact the software publisher. Do not create a broad antivirus exclusion merely to suppress the alert.

Fix 4: Repair Windows components only when Windows itself is damaged

Time needed: 15–30 minutes

idr2000c.dll is a third-party BDE file, so System File Checker and DISM normally will not download or restore it. Use these commands when other Windows components are also failing, Windows features are corrupted, or the problem began with broader system damage.

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Command Prompt.
  3. Right-click Command Prompt.
  4. Select Run as administrator.
  5. Approve the User Account Control prompt.
  6. Run this command first:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  1. Wait for it to finish.
  2. Then run:
sfc /scannow
  1. Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
  2. Restart Windows.
  3. Test the affected application again.

If DISM reports that it cannot complete, restart Windows and run it again while connected to the internet. If SFC reports that it found and repaired corrupted files, restart and retest. If both commands complete without fixing the application, return to the application’s original installer. These commands repair protected Windows files, not the complete BDE runtime.

Repeatedly hunting for damaged system files and rerunning repairs can be time-consuming when the real problem is an incomplete application installation. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for problems and show what needs attention; its repair functions require the full version, but reinstalling the BDE application remains the definitive fix for this file.

Fix 5: Use System Restore after a recent change

Time needed: 20–40 minutes

Use System Restore when the error began immediately after an update, cleanup, driver installation, or software removal and a suitable restore point exists.

  1. Press Windows + R.
  2. Type:
rstrui.exe
  1. Press Enter.
  2. Select Next.
  3. Choose a restore point created before the error began.
  4. Select Scan for affected programs if available.
  5. Review the changes.
  6. Select Next, then Finish.
  7. Allow Windows to restart.

System Restore rolls back system files, settings, and installed programs. It normally does not remove personal documents, but save open work before starting.

If the program still reports the DLL error afterward, repair or reinstall the parent application. System Restore cannot recreate a missing application installer or correct every BDE configuration problem.

Fix 6: Check the 32-bit application architecture

Time needed: 5–15 minutes

BDE is legacy 32-bit software and has no 64-bit support. A 32-bit BDE application can run on 64-bit Windows through WOW64, so seeing Program Files (x86) does not by itself indicate a problem.

Do not copy the DLL between these folders:

  • C:WindowsSystem32
  • C:WindowsSysWOW64

Those folders are part of Windows’ DLL loading system, not general storage locations for application files. A wrong copy can affect the wrong program or load an incompatible file.

If a 64-bit application is requesting idr2000c.dll, verify that the application is genuine and correctly installed. Reinstall the application from its publisher rather than trying to make an arbitrary DLL fit a different architecture.

Fix 7: Check related drivers only when the application uses hardware

Time needed: 10–20 minutes

BDE itself is not a hardware driver, so Device Manager is not normally the solution. Use this check only if the affected program controls equipment, reads a specialized device, or depends on a vendor capture or database interface.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Right-click Start.
  2. Select Device Manager.
  3. Expand the category relevant to the application.
  4. Look for a warning icon.
  5. Right-click the affected device.
  6. Select Properties.
  7. Read the Device status message on the General tab.
  8. Select Driver, then Update Driver if an update is genuinely needed.
  9. Prefer the hardware vendor’s official driver package.
  10. Restart Windows and test the application.

Do not remove a working device simply because the application also reports idr2000c.dll.

Finding the correct legacy driver manually can involve checking hardware IDs, old vendor packages, and several driver versions. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify outdated drivers; installation of drivers through its full version is optional, and it is not a substitute for reinstalling the program that owns idr2000c.dll.

Do not use regsvr32 as a general DLL repair

regsvr32 applies to DLLs that provide registration functions such as DllRegisterServer, commonly COM or ActiveX components. There is no evidence that idr2000c.dll, as a BDE resource/message file, is a self-registering component.

Running this command is therefore usually not appropriate:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
regsvr32 IDR2000C.dll

An error such as “DllRegisterServer entry point was not found” does not mean you need another copy. It usually means the command does not apply to that DLL. Restore the complete application or BDE installation instead.

If the file exists but the program still fails

A present DLL does not prove that the BDE installation is healthy. Check these points in order:

  1. Confirm that the error names the same application you repaired.
  2. Confirm that the file is in the application’s expected BDE directory.
  3. Check whether another BDE dependency is missing.
  4. Repair or reinstall the complete application.
  5. Avoid mixing files from another computer or another BDE release.
  6. Check whether the BDE configuration or registry entries were damaged.
  7. Review antivirus protection history.
  8. Run the application’s own Repair, Verify files, or Verify feature if it provides one.
  9. Ask the publisher for the correct BDE package if the original installer is unavailable.

A BDE startup message such as Error during initialization of Borland database engine points toward a broader BDE installation or configuration problem. It does not prove that idr2000c.dll alone is responsible.

Likely causes and the matching fix

Likely cause Best response
Incomplete uninstall, update, or cleanup Repair or reinstall the parent application
Missing BDE files or configuration Install the complete application-specific BDE package
Antivirus quarantine Review Protection history and validate the original installer
Damaged disk or application files Reinstall the complete application
Recent system change Use System Restore if a suitable restore point exists
32-bit legacy software on 64-bit Windows Keep the application in its supported installation and restore its original files
Missing hardware dependency Check the specific device and vendor driver
File present but launch still fails Investigate other BDE dependencies, configuration, or the executable

FAQ

Is idr2000c.dll a Windows file?

No evidence identifies it as a Windows system DLL. It is associated with the legacy Borland Database Engine used by older third-party applications.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I download it from a DLL website?

Do not use random DLL download sites sites. The file may contain malware, belong to the wrong BDE release, use the wrong architecture, or fail to restore the registry and configuration that the application needs.

Use the original application installer, the software publisher’s support package, or a product-specific BDE installer supplied through an authorized vendor channel.

Is idr2000c.dll 32-bit or 64-bit?

BDE is legacy 32-bit software and has no 64-bit support. The application using it should be treated as a 32-bit legacy program unless its publisher documents otherwise.

Should I copy the file into System32?

No. Keep application DLLs in the directory intended by their installer. Copying unknown DLLs into System32 or SysWOW64 can cause incorrect or unsafe DLL loading.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Will SFC or DISM fix it?

Usually not. They repair protected Windows components. They are useful when Windows itself is damaged, but they are not replacements for reinstalling the BDE-based application.

Why does regsvr32 fail?

Most likely because this file is not a self-registering COM or ActiveX component. A registration error is not evidence that the DLL is missing or that another download is required.

What if I do not know which program installed it?

Start the failing program again and record the executable and path shown in the message. Search Installed apps for older database, accounting, medical, industrial, Paradox, Delphi, or C++Builder software. Do not delete the DLL until you know which application uses it.
