idropenu.dll is an old Autodesk file, not a normal Windows component. If Windows says idropenu.dll is missing, was not found, or could not be loaded, repair the specific Autodesk application that requested it rather than copying a replacement into System32.
The file belongs to Autodesk’s i-drop control and is associated with the older IDrop.ocx ActiveX component. Older AutoCAD releases, some AutoCAD vertical products, and Revit 2019 and earlier documentation referenced this component. Current Autodesk products generally should not need it.

Before you fix idropenu.dll
Do not download idropenu.dll from a random DLL website. A downloaded file may contain malware, belong to a different Autodesk build, use the wrong language or architecture, or fail because the real problem is a damaged installation. Copying it into C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64 can also create path and version conflicts.

1. Repair the Autodesk product
Time needed: 10–20 minutes
This is the most likely fix for idropenu.dll. Autodesk’s repair process restores missing product files without requiring you to find individual DLLs.
- Close AutoCAD, Revit, and every other Autodesk application.
- Press Windows, type Control Panel, and open it.
- Select Programs.
- Open Programs and Features.
- Find the Autodesk product named in the error.
- Select it and choose Uninstall/Change.
- In the Autodesk maintenance window, select Repair.
- Follow the prompts until the operation finishes.
- Restart Windows.
- Launch the same Autodesk application again.
If the application opens normally, the repair restored the missing dependency. Do not remove the replacement file or attempt to register it manually.
If Repair is unavailable
Newer Autodesk installations using Autodesk’s current installer may not offer the older Control Panel repair workflow.
- Open Settings with Windows + I.
- Select Apps.
- Choose Installed apps or Apps & features.
- Locate the affected Autodesk product.
- Select its menu and choose Uninstall if no repair option is available.
- Restart Windows.
- Sign in to your Autodesk Account on the official Autodesk website from a browser.
- Download the installer for the exact product and release.
- Run the installer as an administrator.
- Start the application after installation completes.
Do not install a newer, unrelated Autodesk product just to obtain idropenu.dll. The application and the missing file must belong to the same supported installation.
2. Reinstall the affected Autodesk product
Time needed: 20–60 minutes
Use reinstall when Repair reports an error, the Autodesk entry is incomplete, or the program still fails after repair.
For older Autodesk products:
- Close all Autodesk processes.
- Open Control Panel → Programs → Programs and Features.
- Select the affected Autodesk product.
- Choose Uninstall/Change.
- Select Reinstall if the maintenance wizard offers it.
- Provide the original installation source if requested.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the application.
Reinstall replaces the installed files from the original source. It is preferable to manually copying a DLL because it also restores the product’s supporting files, registry state, shortcuts, and dependencies.
For newer products:
- Open Settings → Apps → Installed apps.
- Uninstall the affected Autodesk application.
- Restart Windows.
- Download a fresh installer from your Autodesk Account or approved Autodesk installation source.
- Install the product again.
- Test the original project or command that produced the error.
Back up projects, templates, custom profiles, scripts, and settings before removing an Autodesk installation.

If both repair and reinstall fail
A damaged partial installation may leave behind files that interfere with the next setup.
- Back up Autodesk settings and project files.
- Remove the affected Autodesk product using Autodesk’s documented clean-uninstall procedure.
- Restart Windows.
- Install pending Windows updates.
- Install the Autodesk product from a fresh official installer.
- Restart again and test it before restoring custom settings.
A clean reinstall is more useful than replacing idropenu.dll alone because the missing file may be only one symptom of a broader incomplete installation.
3. Check Windows Security Protection History
Time needed: 5–10 minutes
Antivirus software can quarantine old ActiveX-related files because i-drop is obsolete and security-sensitive. Check quarantine before downloading anything.
- Press Windows, type Windows Security, and open it.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Under Current threats, choose Protection history.
- Look for an entry involving
idropenu.dll,IDrop.ocx, or the Autodesk installation folder. - Expand the entry and inspect the detected file path.
- Confirm that the path belongs to the Autodesk product you installed.
- Check the file’s publisher or digital signature where available.
- Restore it only if the Autodesk provenance is clear and your security product identifies it as a false positive.
Microsoft explains the Protection History workflow in its Windows Security Protection History guidance.

Repair or reinstall Autodesk from an official source, then rescan the system. A file outside the expected Autodesk directory should not automatically be trusted.
4. Verify the application and file path
Time needed: 5–15 minutes
The error may come from an old shortcut or a partially removed vertical product rather than the Autodesk installation you currently use.
- Right-click the shortcut that produces the error.
- Select Properties.
- Read the path shown in Target.
- Open that folder in File Explorer.
- Right-click the application executable and select Properties.
- Check the Details tab for the product description and version information.
- Note whether the executable belongs to AutoCAD, Revit, or an AutoCAD-based vertical product.
- Repair that exact product in Programs and Features.
You can also search the Autodesk installation folders for idropenu.dll. Finding a copy in an expected Autodesk product directory is useful evidence. Finding one in System32, SysWOW64, a temporary folder, or an unrelated application folder does not prove that it is genuine.
If an old shortcut points to a removed installation, delete the shortcut and launch the currently installed Autodesk product from its Start menu entry.

Time needed: 5 minutes
Historical public file records identify IDropENU.dll as an old Win32 DLL, but that metadata is not a current Autodesk file manifest and does not establish one universal required version.
A 64-bit Windows installation can run a 32-bit Autodesk application, and that application may require a 32-bit support DLL. Therefore, do not assume that a 64-bit copy belongs in System32, and do not download a file based only on the bitness of Windows.
The related idropx64.ocx component is separate. Its presence does not prove that idropenu.dll itself is a 64-bit DLL.
The correct architecture is supplied by the Autodesk product installer. If the product is repaired or reinstalled from the correct source, Windows receives the files in the locations expected by that application.

6. Run DISM and SFC only for wider Windows corruption
Time needed: 15–30 minutes
idropenu.dll is an Autodesk application file, not normally a protected Windows component. SFC will usually not recreate it. Run these checks when other Windows files are also failing, Windows features are unstable, or system corruption is suspected.
- Press Windows, type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for DISM to finish.
- Run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the Autodesk application.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC in its System File Checker instructions.
If SFC reports that it repaired files but idropenu.dll is still missing, that result is not surprising. Return to the Autodesk repair or reinstall steps.

Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems7. Do not use regsvr32 on the DLL
Time needed: 2 minutes to verify
Do not routinely run:
regsvr32 idropenu.dll
regsvr32 registers components that expose a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer. An ordinary application-support DLL does not necessarily provide that function.
The related IDrop.ocx is the ActiveX control. If it must be registered, the Autodesk installer or product repair process should perform that operation with the correct files, registry entries, and dependencies.
Microsoft documents regsvr32 as a registration utility in its regsvr32 command reference, not as a general missing-DLL repair tool.
If you already ran the command and received an error, undoing that command is usually unnecessary. Repair or reinstall the Autodesk product instead.

8. Check Windows Features only when the error identifies a related dependency
Time needed: 5–10 minutes
Windows Features does not normally install Autodesk’s idropenu.dll. Enabling random legacy components is unlikely to restore it and can add unnecessary compatibility features.
Check a Windows feature only when the Autodesk application specifically reports a separate missing Windows component:
- Press Windows, type Turn Windows features on or off, and open it.
- Review the feature named by the separate error.
- Select it only if the Autodesk product documentation or error specifically requires it.
- Select OK.
- Restart Windows if prompted.
- Test the application.
Do not enable legacy Internet Explorer or ActiveX-related features merely because the file is associated with an old ActiveX control. The normal fix remains repair or reinstall of Autodesk.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.9. Test permissions with a separate administrator profile
Time needed: 10–20 minutes
A damaged Windows profile or incorrect permissions can prevent an older application from reading its own installation files.
First test the application with elevation:
- Right-click the Autodesk shortcut.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Compatibility tab.
- Select Run this program as an administrator.
- Select Apply, then OK.
- Launch the application.
If that works, the issue may involve permissions or profile data. Do not leave permanent administrator mode enabled unless needed for the product. Instead, test a fresh local administrator profile:
- Open Settings → Accounts → Other users.
- Select Add account.
- Follow the prompts to create a local account.
- Change the account type to Administrator.
- Sign out of your normal account.
- Sign in to the test account.
- Launch Autodesk and test the same operation.
If the application works only in the new profile, migrate settings carefully or repair the original profile. If it fails in both profiles, the Autodesk installation is the stronger suspect.
10. Update or reinstall related drivers only for separate graphics or hardware errors
Time needed: 10–30 minutes
A display-driver problem can prevent AutoCAD or Revit from starting, but a graphics driver does not normally install idropenu.dll. Treat a driver error and the missing Autodesk DLL as separate problems unless the messages clearly connect them.
To check the display driver:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Right-click the graphics device.
- Select Properties and review the General and Driver tabs.
- If Windows reports a device error, select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if a driver is installed.
- If the problem began after a driver update, open Properties → Driver and select Roll Back Driver when available.
For a clean driver update, use the graphics manufacturer’s official driver package rather than a random driver archive. Outbyte Driver Updater can show which drivers its free scan identifies; driver installation is handled by the full version, but it is not a substitute for repairing the Autodesk installation that owns idropenu.dll.
Why this happens
The common causes are:
| Cause | What it means | Correct response |
|---|---|---|
| Damaged installation | A product file was deleted or never installed | Repair Autodesk, then reinstall if necessary |
| Wrong product launch | An old shortcut or vertical product is being started | Identify the executable and repair that installation |
| Antivirus quarantine | Security software removed an old component | Verify path and provenance, then restore or reinstall |
| Backup or profile restoration | An old Autodesk setup was restored incompletely | Reinstall from the matching official source |
| Windows upgrade | An obsolete application no longer works correctly | Repair, update, or replace the legacy Autodesk product |
| Windows corruption | Other protected system files are damaged | Run DISM, then SFC |
| Permissions or profile damage | The application cannot access its installation | Test elevation and a new administrator profile |
Autodesk identified i-drop as outdated and security-sensitive. Standard AutoCAD removed it beginning with AutoCAD 2018, although some vertical products retained it, and Autodesk states that it was removed from all AutoCAD-based products with AutoCAD 2019. Revit removed it in Revit 2020 and later.
That history matters. If a current Autodesk product reports idropenu.dll, check for a leftover shortcut, an old plug-in, a damaged installation, or a separately installed legacy component.
What success looks like
The repair is complete when:
- The affected Autodesk program opens without the DLL message.
- The original command or project loads normally.
- Windows Security no longer quarantines the restored installation file.
- The application continues to start after a restart.
- No DLL was copied into a Windows system directory.
If the error remains after a clean reinstall, record the exact application name, executable path, Autodesk release, full error text, and any Protection History entry. That information identifies whether the failure belongs to Autodesk, antivirus software, permissions, or another application loading an obsolete component.
FAQ
Is idropenu.dll a Windows file?
No. It is an Autodesk i-drop control file associated with an older ActiveX component. It should not normally be present in System32 or SysWOW64.
Can I download idropenu.dll separately?
Avoid standalone DLL downloads. Use the matching Autodesk installer, repair operation, or original installation media.
Will SFC restore the file?
Usually not. SFC repairs protected Windows files, while idropenu.dll belongs to Autodesk. Run SFC only when broader Windows corruption is also suspected.
Should I run regsvr32 idropenu.dll?
No, not as a routine fix. The DLL is not necessarily self-registering. Let Autodesk repair or reinstall its own ActiveX-related components.
Does Windows 11 require a 64-bit copy?
No. Windows bitness does not determine the bitness of every application dependency. An older 32-bit Autodesk application may require a 32-bit DLL even on 64-bit Windows.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Why would a current Autodesk application mention it?
The message may come from an old shortcut, a vertical product, a leftover installation, or a damaged bundled component. Identify the executable before choosing what to repair.
Should I install Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET?
Those packages are not verified sources of idropenu.dll and should not be the primary fix for this error. Repair the Autodesk product first.
What if antivirus keeps deleting the file?
Inspect Protection History and verify the Autodesk path and signature. If the file is legitimate, reinstall the product from an official source rather than repeatedly copying or restoring an isolated DLL.
