hpv820al.dll Missing: Rebuild the HP Printer Setup Safely

hpv820al.dll is an HP DeskJet printer-driver component, not a general Windows runtime. Its published description is “Windows Unidrv Plugin,” which fits Microsoft’s Unidrv printer-driver architecture of DLLs and printer-specific data files (Microsoft’s Unidrv documentation).

If Windows says hpv820al.dll is missing, was not found, or could not be loaded, repair the affected HP printer installation rather than downloading a replacement DLL. The safest fix is to remove the printer, restart Windows, and reinstall the correct software package for the exact HP model from HP’s official support site.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Before you begin: do not download the DLL

Do not copy hpv820al.dll from a random DLL archive into System32, SysWOW64, an application folder, or the Windows Driver Store.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That approach can fail because:

  • The downloaded file may contain malware or unwanted software.
  • A copy for one HP printer generation may not work with another.
  • The file architecture may be wrong.
  • The DLL may depend on other files from the same driver package.
  • Windows may replace or reject a manually modified Driver Store file.
  • The original problem may be a missing dependency or broken printer package rather than the DLL itself.

The safe sources are Windows Update, Windows’ built-in printer installation workflow, Microsoft’s repair tools, and HP’s official printer-driver page. Search HP Support for the exact printer model instead of searching for the DLL filename.

Fix 1: remove and reinstall the affected HP printer

Time needed: 10–20 minutes, plus the time required to download the driver.

This is the most likely solution when the error mentions an HP printer, the Print Spooler, DriverStoreFileRepository, or appears after an HP printer was removed or reinstalled.

Remove the printer

  1. Disconnect the printer’s USB cable if it is connected.
  2. Open Start > Settings.
  3. Select Bluetooth & devices.
  4. Select Printers & scanners.
  5. Select the affected HP printer.
  6. Select Remove.
  7. Confirm the removal.
  8. Restart Windows.

For a network printer, leave it powered off during the first restart. This prevents Windows from immediately reconnecting to a damaged queue.

Install the correct HP package

  1. Open HP’s official printer support page in a browser.
  2. Search for the exact printer model, including its model number and series.
  3. Select the Windows 11 or Windows 10 driver package that matches the installed operating system.
  4. Download the complete driver or software package, not an unrelated utility or a standalone DLL.
  5. Run the installer.
  6. Follow its connection instructions.
  7. Reconnect the USB cable only when the installer requests it. For a network printer, select the correct network device when prompted.
  8. Open Start > Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners.
  9. Select Add device if the installer did not add the printer automatically.

If Windows does not find the printer, select Add manually and follow the available driver prompts. Microsoft documents the supported remove-and-reinstall workflow in its printer connection and printing guidance.

Check whether it worked

Print a Windows test page:

  1. Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners.
  2. Select the HP printer.
  3. Select Printer properties.
  4. Select Print Test Page.

The repair worked if the test page prints and the original error no longer appears. If the same message returns, continue with Fix 2 rather than copying a DLL manually.

Fix 2: install pending Windows updates

Time needed: 5–30 minutes, depending on the update.

A Windows upgrade or update can expose an old printer package that was already incomplete or incompatible. Windows Update may also provide a compatible printer driver, although it is not guaranteed to provide the exact HP-specific component your printer needs.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Start > Settings.
  2. Select Windows Update.
  3. Select Check for updates.
  4. Select Download & install for available updates.
  5. Restart when Windows asks.
  6. Return to Windows Update and check again until no additional required updates are offered.
  7. Test the printer again.

If the error began immediately after a Windows upgrade, remove the old HP printer package and install the latest package HP provides for that model. Do not assume that the first driver Windows offers is the best match for an older DeskJet.

Fix 3: repair Windows components with DISM and SFC

Time needed: 15–30 minutes.

Use this fix when other Windows components are also failing, Windows Update is damaged, or the printer installation fails with broader system errors. DISM and SFC repair protected Windows components. They may not restore hpv820al.dll because this file is associated with an HP package rather than being a standard protected Windows file.

Run DISM first

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Command Prompt.
  3. Right-click Command Prompt.
  4. Select Run as administrator.
  5. Approve the User Account Control prompt.
  6. Enter:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  1. Wait for the operation to finish.
  2. Keep the elevated Command Prompt open.

Run SFC second

Enter:

sfc /scannow

Wait until the scan reaches 100 percent, then restart Windows and test the printer.

A successful result means Windows repaired or found no corruption in protected system files. It does not prove that the HP driver package is intact. If SFC reports that it found no integrity violations but hpv820al.dll is still missing, return to Fix 1 and reinstall the HP package.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If repeatedly hunting through Windows components and interpreting DISM/SFC results is slowing down the repair, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for issues and show what needs attention; its free scan identifies problems, while repair requires the full version. It is optional, and reinstalling the exact HP printer package remains the definitive fix for this third-party DLL.

Fix 4: check Microsoft Defender Protection History

Time needed: 5–10 minutes.

Antivirus software may quarantine a legitimate driver file, particularly after a security definition change or a failed installation. Do not restore the file automatically. First verify its origin and signature.

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Windows Security.
  3. Open Windows Security.
  4. Select Virus & threat protection.
  5. Select Protection history.
  6. Review recent entries for hpv820al.dll, HP software, printer drivers, or a related installer.
  7. Open an entry to see its status, location, and available actions.

If Defender identifies the file as a threat, leave it quarantined and run a full scan. If the file was quarantined as a possible unwanted or mistaken detection, verify that it came from the official HP installer and that the file’s digital signature identifies Hewlett-Packard or the expected HP publisher.

Only after that verification should you consider restoring or allowing it. In most cases, reinstalling a verified, signed HP package is safer than restoring an isolated file. Microsoft explains these decisions in its Protection History guidance.

If the file is found in an unexpected temporary folder, a user profile folder, or an unrelated application directory, do not assume it is legitimate. Run a full Microsoft Defender scan and investigate the file’s digital signature.

Fix 5: identify the owning driver package with PnPUtil

Time needed: 10–20 minutes.

Use this step when you need to determine which installed package contains the file, especially if no printer is visible in Settings.

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Command Prompt.
  3. Right-click it.
  4. Select Run as administrator.
  5. Enter:
pnputil /enum-drivers /files
  1. Search the output for:
HPV820AL.DLL

Also look for HP, DeskJet, or the relevant printer model.

The output can help associate the DLL with an OEM driver package such as oem42.inf. Record the package identifier before removing anything.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not delete a package merely because it is old. First confirm that no installed printer, print queue, or business application depends on it.

If you have confirmed that the package is orphaned, Microsoft documents removal with:

pnputil /delete-driver oem42.inf /uninstall

Replace oem42.inf only with the identifier you confirmed from your own system. Restart Windows afterward, then reinstall the correct HP package.

If PnPUtil shows a package still used by the printer, do not remove it manually. Use Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners to remove the printer first, or use the HP installer to repair the installation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 6: clear a stale printer or startup reference

Time needed: 10–20 minutes.

Sometimes the printer has already been removed, but a print queue, scheduled task, application shortcut, or service still tries to load its old driver. This commonly produces a startup error even though no HP printer is visible in Settings.

Check installed printers

  1. Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners.
  2. Remove unused or duplicated HP printers.
  3. Restart Windows.
  4. Check whether the startup message returns.

Check the Print Spooler

  1. Press Windows key + R.
  2. Type services.msc.
  3. Press Enter.
  4. Locate Print Spooler.
  5. Right-click it and select Restart.
  6. Test printing or restart Windows again.

Do not delete random files from the spooler folders. If a stale queue remains, remove the printer through Windows’ supported interface and reinstall it from the correct package.

Check startup entries

  1. Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
  2. Select Startup apps.
  3. Look for an HP printer helper or an entry associated with software you recently removed.
  4. Disable an obviously orphaned HP startup entry.
  5. Restart Windows.

If the message identifies a particular application, repair or uninstall that application rather than disabling unrelated Windows startup items. If the error appears before sign-in, check Task Scheduler for an HP task left by old software, but remove only entries you can positively identify.

Fix 7: reinstall the driver through Device Manager

Time needed: 10–15 minutes.

Device Manager can help when Windows detects the printer but reports a driver problem.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Disconnect the printer if it is connected by USB.
  2. Right-click Start.
  3. Select Device Manager.
  4. Expand Printers, Print queues, and, where present, Universal Serial Bus controllers.
  5. Locate the HP printer or an entry with a warning icon.
  6. Right-click the relevant device.
  7. Select Uninstall device.
  8. If offered, select the option to remove the driver software for that device.
  9. Confirm the uninstall.
  10. Restart Windows.
  11. Install the exact HP package from HP’s official support site.
  12. Reconnect the printer when the installer requests it.

Do not uninstall unrelated devices simply because they have similar names. If the printer does not appear in Device Manager at all, check its power, cable, network connection, and Windows printer discovery before treating the DLL as the primary problem.

For driver updates, manually matching the exact model and Windows architecture can mean hunting through several packages. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and show driver issues, with installation and repair handled by the full version; it is optional, and the exact HP package remains the preferred source for this file.

Why regsvr32 usually does not help

You may find instructions telling you to run:

regsvr32 hpv820al.dll

That is not a general DLL repair command. regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that provide registration interfaces such as DllRegisterServer, commonly used by self-registering COM or ActiveX components (Microsoft’s regsvr32 documentation).

There is no verified evidence that hpv820al.dll is a self-registering COM or ActiveX component. A missing printer-driver plugin normally needs its complete package, INF registration, associated data files, and correct architecture. Registering the DLL will not recreate those relationships.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If regsvr32 reports that the module could not be found, that can also mean one of the DLL’s dependencies is missing. It does not prove that registration is the correct repair.

32-bit, 64-bit, and Driver Store cautions

Historical public file listings disagree about the size and architecture of particular copies of hpv820al.dll. Those records should not be used as definitive identification for your computer.

The correct architecture is determined by the printer package and the Windows installation using it. A 32-bit application or legacy printing component may require a 32-bit file, while a 64-bit Windows printer installation may use a 64-bit package. A similarly named DLL from another architecture is not a safe substitute.

You may see the file under a path resembling:

C:WindowsSystem32DriverStoreFileRepository

That does not make it a general Windows system DLL. Microsoft describes the Driver Store as a package-managed location containing files referenced by driver INF files (Driver Store documentation). Do not manually replace, rename, or delete files there. Windows may overwrite the change, and package integrity can be damaged.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What the common errors mean

  • “The program can’t start because hpv820al.dll is missing from your computer.”
The calling program cannot locate the expected HP component. The printer package may be incomplete, removed, or installed in the wrong location.

  • “This application failed to start because hpv820al.dll was not found.”
The application or printer helper requested the DLL and Windows could not resolve it.

  • “Error loading hpv820al.dll.”
Windows found a reference to the file but could not load it. The file itself may be damaged, or a dependency, architecture match, or driver-package registration may be wrong.

  • “The specified module could not be found.”
This message does not always mean the named DLL is absent. A dependency required by the DLL may be missing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • “The file hpv820al.dll is missing or corrupt.”
The package may have been damaged by an interrupted installation, disk cleanup, antivirus quarantine, or manual deletion.

  • “Cannot find …DriverStoreFileRepository…hpv820al.dll.”
A printer driver reference is pointing into a package-managed Driver Store location where the expected file is no longer available or cannot be loaded.

Likely causes

What changed Likely explanation Best first action
An old HP printer was removed A stale queue, startup helper, or driver reference remains Remove remaining HP printer entries, restart, then inspect the driver package
Windows was upgraded or updated An old package may no longer match the current installation Install updates, then reinstall the exact HP package
HP software was reinstalled The installation may have stopped before all files were staged Remove the printer and run the complete HP installer again
Antivirus intervened The DLL may have been quarantined Check Protection History and verify the package before restoring anything
Disk cleanup or manual deletion occurred A package file or dependency was removed Reinstall the complete driver package
Installation failed The INF, DLL, or printer-specific data files may be incomplete Disconnect USB, restart, install the package first, then reconnect
No printer is installed now A stale startup or spooler reference may still be active Identify and remove the orphaned printer package or startup entry

Do not call the file malware solely because it is unfamiliar. Its published metadata identifies it as an HP DeskJet Unidrv plugin, but unexpected location, invalid signature, or unrelated behavior warrants a security scan.

If reinstalling does not solve the error

Check the following in order:

  1. Confirm the HP package is for the exact printer model.
  2. Confirm it supports your Windows edition and architecture.
  3. Disconnect the USB cable before reinstalling.
  4. Remove duplicate printer queues.
  5. Restart the Print Spooler.
  6. Check Defender Protection History.
  7. Use pnputil /enum-drivers /files to find the package owning the file.
  8. Run DISM followed by SFC if other Windows components are also failing.
  9. Install pending Windows updates.
  10. Restart and test with a Windows test page.

If HP provides no current package for the legacy model, use a compatible driver offered by Windows or a supported inbox or IPP option where applicable. Basic printing may work while advanced features do not.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

System Restore is reasonable when the failure began recently and a restore point predates it. It is not a replacement for obtaining a current, compatible printer driver.

FAQ

Is hpv820al.dll a Microsoft file?

No. It is identified as a Hewlett-Packard Company DeskJet component with the description “Windows Unidrv Plugin.” It uses Microsoft’s printer-driver architecture, but that does not mean it ships as a general Windows file.

Which HP DeskJet model installed it?

The filename alone does not identify one definitive DeskJet model. Multiple HP printer generations can use different packages with similar product associations. Use the printer model, HP installer details, or pnputil output to identify the owning package.

Should I put the file in System32?

No. Install the complete printer package instead. Manually copying a DLL can produce an architecture mismatch and leaves the INF, dependencies, and printer-specific data files unresolved.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

One-click scans. No signup required.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Will SFC restore hpv820al.dll?

Not necessarily. SFC repairs protected Windows components. Because this DLL is associated with an HP printer package, reinstalling that package is the more direct repair.

Can I register it with regsvr32?

Usually not. There is no verified indication that this printer-driver plugin is a self-registering COM or ActiveX DLL. Repair the driver package instead.

Why does the error appear when no printer is installed?

A removed printer can leave behind a queue, startup helper, scheduled task, or driver reference. Remove stale printer entries, restart the Print Spooler, inspect startup items, and identify orphaned packages with PnPUtil.

What if the DLL is present but Windows still cannot load it?

The named file may have a missing dependency, incorrect architecture, invalid package registration, or damaged companion files. Reinstall the complete HP package and avoid replacing only the visible DLL.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is the file safe?

The filename is associated with legitimate HP DeskJet software, but safety depends on the file’s origin, location, signature, and package integrity. Verify files through the official HP installer and Microsoft Defender rather than trusting the filename alone.
