ieproxy16.dll is missing, not found, or cannot be loaded when an Autodesk-based application starts. The safest fix is to identify the Autodesk product that requests ieproxy16.dll, then repair or reinstall that product rather than downloading a replacement DLL.
Error messages you may see
The wording depends on the application and the point at which Windows tries to load the file. Commonly reported variants include:

These are reported error variants, not standardized messages produced by every AutoCAD or Autodesk release.

ieproxy16.dll is associated with Autodesk’s AutoCAD Image Engine Proxy Module. Available legacy file records identify Autodesk Inc. as the developer and commonly place the file under a shared Autodesk folder, such as:

It is not a standard Windows component, Visual C++ runtime, DirectX file, or .NET file.
Do this first:
- Close all Autodesk applications.
- Identify the Autodesk product named by the error, shortcut, or recent installation history.
- Repair that product from Control Panel if it is an older installation.
- If the product uses Autodesk’s newer installer, uninstall and reinstall the matching product from your Autodesk Account.
- Check Windows Security if antivirus software may have quarantined the file.
- Do not copy a DLL from a random download site into
System32,SysWOW64, or the application folder.
Repairing the owning installation restores the correct file set, dependencies, registry data, permissions, and architecture. A manually copied file does none of that.
What causes the error
A damaged Autodesk installation
This is the most likely cause. An interrupted update, failed installation, disk problem, or accidental deletion can remove one shared Autodesk component while leaving the main program installed.
An Autodesk product was partially removed
Autodesk products can share components. Removing an older AutoCAD installation or deleting shared Autodesk folders may break another Autodesk application that still depends on them.
This can happen after:
- Uninstalling AutoCAD or an AutoCAD vertical
- Running a cleanup utility
- Removing shared Autodesk folders manually
- Installing or removing an older Autodesk component
- Restoring only part of a program backup
Antivirus quarantine
Security software may have removed or isolated the file. A correct filename does not prove that a file is safe, so verify the original location, publisher, digital signature, and detection before restoring anything.
The wrong Autodesk product is being repaired
An error may appear while opening an AutoCAD vertical, an older Autodesk utility, or another program that embeds Autodesk technology. Repairing a different Autodesk product will not restore the dependency requested by the failing executable.
A missing dependency
“The specified module could not be found” does not always mean that ieproxy16.dll itself is absent. Windows may find the DLL but fail to load one of its dependencies.

Windows component damage
Windows corruption is possible, but it is a secondary explanation for an Autodesk-owned DLL. SFC and DISM repair Windows components and servicing data; they are not a reliable way to recreate an arbitrary Autodesk file.
Step 1: Identify the application that needs the file
Before repairing anything, find the executable that is failing.
Check the error dialog
Note the application name in the title bar or message. The program may be AutoCAD, an AutoCAD vertical, an Autodesk utility, or another application that uses Autodesk technology.

Check the shortcut target
- Right-click the shortcut that fails.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Shortcut tab.
- Read the Target field.
- Note the executable name and installation folder.
- Select Cancel.
Do not assume that the first Autodesk product listed in Apps is the correct one. Match the product to the executable that launches when the error appears.

On Windows 11:
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Search for AutoCAD or Autodesk.
On Windows 10:
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Apps & features.
- Search for AutoCAD or Autodesk.
Also check the traditional list:
- Press
Win + R. - Type
appwiz.cpl. - Press Enter.
- Review the Autodesk entries in Programs and Features.
Look for the product that matches the shortcut, error dialog, and recent update or uninstall activity.
Step 2: Repair an older Autodesk installation
Older Autodesk installers commonly provide Repair and Reinstall through Control Panel.
- Close AutoCAD and every other Autodesk application.
- Press
Win + R. - Type:
appwiz.cpl
- Press Enter.
- Select the affected Autodesk product.
- Choose Uninstall/Change.
- In the Autodesk maintenance window, select Repair.
- Follow the prompts.
- Restart Windows.
- Open the same application again.
Repair should restore missing installed files without requiring you to locate a DLL manually. Test the exact shortcut that previously failed.
If Repair reports that it cannot complete:
- Return to Programs and Features.
- Select the same Autodesk product.
- Choose Uninstall/Change.
- Select Reinstall if the maintenance program provides that option.
- Complete the installation.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the application.
Autodesk’s reinstall process is intended to restore installed files and registry data. It is preferable to copying ieproxy16.dll from another computer because the installer can restore the matching files for that product.
Step 3: Reinstall a newer Autodesk product
Many newer Autodesk products are managed through the Autodesk Account rather than the older Control Panel repair workflow.
- Close Autodesk applications.
- Sign in to your Autodesk Account.
- Open Products and Services.
- Find the affected product.
- Select the matching product, release, and Windows platform.
- Choose the available Install or Download option.
- Run the installer as an administrator if Windows requests permission.
- Allow the installation to complete.
- Restart Windows.
- Launch the application that reported the error.
Use the same product and release family when possible. Installing a different Autodesk product or unrelated AutoCAD vertical may not provide the executable’s required copy of the module.
If the product is still listed as installed but the installer cannot repair it, uninstall the affected product from Settings > Apps > Installed apps or Control Panel > Programs and Features, restart, and then install it again from the Autodesk Account.
Do not remove shared Autodesk folders while another Autodesk application remains installed. If several Autodesk products are broken, follow Autodesk’s complete uninstall and reinstall procedure rather than deleting folders selectively.

If the problem began after a security scan, inspect Protection History before reinstalling or restoring anything.

- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Find the detection associated with
ieproxy16.dll. - Expand the item and review:
- The original file path
- The detected threat name
- The action taken
- The date of detection
- Compare the path with the Autodesk installation you identified.
- Check whether the file has a valid Autodesk publisher signature where available.
- Run a full Windows Security scan before allowing the file.
Restore the file only when you have confirmed that it came from the expected Autodesk installation and the detection is a false positive. Microsoft warns that allowing an unsafe file can expose the device.
If the detection remains unclear, do not restore it. Remove or quarantine the item, then reinstall the Autodesk product from its official installer. That gives you a clean provenance instead of trusting an isolated file.
Why downloading ieproxy16.dll separately is unsafe
Random DLL download pages can provide:
- Malware disguised as a familiar filename
- A file from a different Autodesk release
- The wrong 32-bit or 64-bit architecture
- A modified or unsigned binary
- A file with missing dependencies
- A DLL that does not match the application’s search path
A DLL can have the correct name and still be incompatible or malicious. Public legacy indexes also report differing historical metadata for this file, so a version or size shown on one page should not be treated as a universal current specification.

- The original Autodesk installer
- Autodesk Account for a licensed product
- Autodesk installation media from the organization that supplied the product
- A verified, licensed archive of an older Autodesk installer when the old release is no longer available through the account
Do not copy the file into:
C:WindowsSystem32
C:WindowsSysWOW64
Those folders are not general-purpose storage locations for application DLLs. Placing an Autodesk DLL there can create conflicts and still leave the application without its correct dependency relationship.
Do not use regsvr32 as a general fix
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. Many ordinary application DLLs do not provide that interface.
For that reason, this is not a recommended first-line repair:
regsvr32 ieproxy16.dll
If you run it against a non-self-registering DLL, Windows may report that the entry point is missing. That does not prove that the file is corrupt, and repeating the command will not repair the Autodesk installation.

Use regsvr32 only when Autodesk documentation for the exact product and version explicitly requires it. Otherwise, repair or reinstall the application.
32-bit and 64-bit Windows considerations
A 32-bit Autodesk executable can require 32-bit components even when it runs on 64-bit Windows. The operating system architecture and the application architecture are not always the same.
Keep these rules in mind:
- Do not replace a missing file with a similarly named 64-bit DLL.
- Do not assume that a file belongs in
System32because Windows is 64-bit. - Do not assume that
SysWOW64is the correct location for every 32-bit application DLL. - Repair the application that requests the file so its installer selects the correct architecture.
- If the Autodesk product is legacy, use its original installer or a compatible licensed installation source.
To check the Windows architecture:
- Open Settings.
- Select System.
- Select About.
- Read System type.
This tells you about Windows, not necessarily the architecture of the failing Autodesk executable. The product installer and executable path are more useful when determining which copy is required.

Fix Windows components only when Windows is also damaged
If Windows has broader problems, install pending updates before attempting the Autodesk reinstall.
- Open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install available updates.
- Restart Windows.
Then use an elevated Command Prompt:
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run DISM first:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Run System File Checker:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
- Repair or reinstall the Autodesk product again.
Microsoft recommends DISM before SFC when repairing missing or corrupted Windows components. These commands may correct Windows-side servicing or dependency damage, but they are unlikely to recreate an Autodesk-owned ieproxy16.dll.

Do not add random exclusions or disable Windows Security merely to suppress the error. Determine whether the file is genuinely from Autodesk first.
Update drivers only when the evidence points to a driver problem
A graphics or storage driver is not the normal source of a missing Autodesk DLL. Consider driver work only if the Autodesk application also crashes with display errors, Windows reports device failures, or the problem began immediately after a driver change.
To check Device Manager:
- Press
Win + X. - Select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters, Storage controllers, and any category showing a warning icon.
- Right-click the affected device.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Review the provider, date, and version.
- Use Update Driver only when a newer driver is available from the device or computer manufacturer.
- Restart Windows and test the Autodesk application.
Do not use Device Manager to search for ieproxy16.dll. It cannot restore an application file.

Use System Restore after a recent system change
System Restore is reasonable when the error began immediately after an installation, update, driver change, or cleanup operation and a suitable restore point exists.

Win + R. - Type:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point dated before the error began.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Review the changes.
- Select Next, then Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart.
System Restore may remove a recent program or update. It does not replace a proper Autodesk reinstall when the installation itself is damaged.

If repair and reinstall do not work
A persistent error requires identifying exactly what Windows is loading.
Confirm the executable and folder
Return to the shortcut properties and record the full target path. Make sure the Autodesk product you repaired owns that executable.
Check the expected DLL location
Search the repaired Autodesk installation and shared Autodesk folders for ieproxy16.dll. Finding no file after a successful reinstall may indicate that the installed release no longer supplies this legacy component, or that the wrong product was repaired.

Do not download a replacement simply because a search result lists a file with the same name.

Check permissions
- Browse to the Autodesk installation folder.
- Right-click the folder.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Security tab.
- Confirm that the user and SYSTEM have the permissions required to read and execute files.
- Do not grant broad write permissions to everyone as a workaround.
Investigate dependency errors
If the file exists but Windows says the specified module cannot be found, another dependency may be missing. Check Event Viewer:
- Press
Win + X. - Select Event Viewer.
- Open Windows Logs.
- Select Application.
- Look for an error at the time the Autodesk program failed.
- Record the application name, faulting module, and error details.
Do not download individual dependencies based only on an Event Viewer name. Repair the complete Autodesk installation or contact Autodesk support with the product version, exact executable path, installer logs, and event details.
FAQ
Is ieproxy16.dll a Windows file?
No reliable evidence identifies it as a Windows system file. Available records associate it with Autodesk’s AutoCAD Image Engine Proxy Module.
Which program installed it?

That is not recommended. The other computer may have a different Autodesk release, architecture, path, or dependency set. Repair the affected installation from its official source.
Why does Windows say the specified module cannot be found when the file exists?
Windows may be unable to load a dependency of ieproxy16.dll, or the application may be searching a different folder. The message does not prove that the named file alone is missing.
Should I register the DLL?
Usually not. regsvr32 applies to DLLs that support registration entry points. Use it only when the exact Autodesk documentation for your product requires it.
Is the file malware?
The filename alone cannot answer that. Check its location, digital signature, publisher, installation source, and antivirus detection. A file in an unexpected writable folder deserves more scrutiny than one restored by the official Autodesk installer.
