The 60-second answer is that iernonce.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows component associated with Internet Explorer. Do not download a replacement DLL from a random website. Install pending Windows updates, then run DISM followed by System File Checker.
What iernonce.dll does
iernonce.dll means Internet Explorer extended one-time startup processing. Its description is “Extended RunOnce processing with UI,” and it provides the RunOnceExProcess and InitCallback entry points used by Windows RunOnceEx commands.
RunOnceEx lets Windows or an installer run commands once during startup or after software installation. That is why an error can appear immediately after signing in, even when you are not opening Internet Explorer.
The file is part of Windows and Internet Explorer servicing. It is not a Visual C++ runtime, DirectX component, .NET assembly, game file, or general-purpose application dependency.

Is iernonce.dll safe?
A copy in a normal Windows component location with a valid Microsoft digital signature is expected. A file with the right name is not automatically genuine.
Check it this way:
- Press Windows key + R.
- Enter
%windir%and press Enter. - Search the Windows folders for
iernonce.dll. - Right-click the file and select Properties.
- Open the Digital Signatures tab.
- Confirm that the signer is Microsoft and that Windows reports the signature as valid.
You can also search for copies from an elevated Command Prompt:
where /r "%windir%" iernonce.dll
Windows may use System32, SysWOW64, or an older %windir%System location depending on the operating system and component architecture. On 64-bit Windows, System32 is commonly used for 64-bit system files while SysWOW64 contains many 32-bit system files. Do not copy a file between these folders manually.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhy the error appears
The most likely causes are:
- A damaged or missing Windows component.
- An interrupted Windows or Internet Explorer update.
- A stale RunOnceEx startup command.
- Antivirus quarantine or a false positive.
- Disk or file-system corruption.
- Malware or a counterfeit DLL.
The exact cause is not proven merely by the wording of the message. In particular, “not valid for Win32” can indicate corruption or an architecture mismatch, but it does not by itself prove malware.
Fix 1: Install Windows updates first
Windows services this component through Windows Update rather than through a current standalone iernonce.dll installer.
Windows 11
- Open Start.
- Select Settings.
- Choose Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install everything offered.
- Restart the PC.
- Return to Windows Update and check again.
Windows 10
- Open Start.
- Select Settings.
- Choose Update & Security.
- Select Windows Update.
- Click Check for updates.
- Install the available updates and restart.
- Check again after the restart.
If the error disappears after updating and restarting, no DLL replacement is needed. If updates repeatedly fail, continue with the repair commands below.

Fix 2: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC
This is the most appropriate repair when the file is missing, corrupted, or rejected as invalid.
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
Wait for DISM to finish. It can remain at one percentage for a while. Then run:
sfc /scannow
Restart Windows when both commands finish.
DISM repairs the Windows component store that SFC uses as its repair source. Running SFC first can leave it unable to replace a damaged file.
Success means that Windows reports repaired corruption, or that SFC finds no integrity violations. Test the action that previously produced the error, then restart once more if the message appeared during login.
Outbyte PC Repair can reduce the manual work of hunting through repair results and repeating DISM or SFC without knowing what changed; its free scan identifies issues, while repair requires the full version. It is optional, and Windows Update, DISM, and SFC remain the authoritative repair path.
If SFC cannot repair everything
If SFC says it found corrupted files but could not fix some of them:
- Restart the computer.
- Run DISM again.
- Run SFC again.
- Restart and test.
If Windows Update is itself damaged, use a matching Windows installation source with an administrator Command Prompt:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:C:RepairSourceWindows /LimitAccess
Replace C:RepairSourceWindows with the real path to a genuine Windows repair source that matches your installed edition and build. Do not use an arbitrary folder or an image from an unknown source.

Persistent failures may indicate broader component-store or disk corruption. In that case, review the CBS log, check disk health, or proceed to System Restore or an in-place Windows repair.
Fix 3: Investigate a startup-only RunOnceEx error
If the message appears immediately after login but applications otherwise work, a stale installer command may be calling iernonce.dll.
Microsoft documents RunOnce commands in forms such as:
Rundll32.exe DllName,EntryPoint
The relevant registry locations are:
HKLMSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionRunOnceEx
HKCUSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionRunOnceEx
Before changing anything:
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
regedit. - Press Enter.
- Select Yes when prompted.
- In Registry Editor, select File > Export.
- Export the registry, or at least the relevant RunOnceEx key.
Inspect the commands for an entry that references iernonce.dll or a program that was recently removed or updated. Do not delete entries simply because they look unfamiliar. Identify the originating installer first.
A clean boot can help isolate the startup item:
- Press Windows key + R.
- Enter
msconfig. - Open the Services tab.
- Select Hide all Microsoft services.
- Click Disable all.
- Open the Startup tab and select Open Task Manager.
- Disable enabled third-party startup items.
- Restart and test.
If the error disappears, re-enable items in small groups until the trigger is identified. Restore normal startup settings after testing.

Windows Security may have quarantined a damaged or suspicious copy.
- Open Start.
- Search for Windows Security and open it.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Look for an event involving
iernonce.dll. - Check its path, detection name, and signature before taking action.
Restore the file only when you have verified that it is a legitimate Microsoft-signed component and the quarantine was clearly a false positive. If the path is outside the Windows directories, the signature is invalid, or the detection indicates malware, do not restore it. Run a full Microsoft Defender scan and repair Windows through DISM, SFC, or Windows Update instead.

Fix 5: Check for disk corruption
Repeated SFC failures, disappearing files, or other damaged Windows components can indicate storage or file-system problems.
First back up important files. Then inspect the CBS log referenced by SFC and check the drive for errors using Windows’ built-in drive tools. If corruption continues after repair, use a restore point or an in-place Windows repair installation rather than replacing only iernonce.dll.

Does regsvr32 fix iernonce.dll?
Usually, no.
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that provide the DllRegisterServer entry point, normally for COM registration. iernonce.dll is used through a RunOnceEx entry point, not ordinary COM registration.
Running commands such as these is therefore not the normal repair:
regsvr32 iernonce.dll
regsvr32 /u iernonce.dll
They may produce an error and do not repair a missing or corrupted Windows component. Use Windows Update, DISM, and SFC instead.
Should you download iernonce.dll?
No. Random DLL download sites can provide malware, an incorrect architecture, an incompatible Windows build, or a file with a forged or missing signature. Copying it into System32 or SysWOW64 can create loader errors and hide the original servicing problem.

The safe sources are:
- Windows Update
- DISM using Windows’ own component store or a matching installation source
- SFC
- System Restore
- An official in-place Windows repair
Do not install Visual C++ Redistributables, DirectX, or .NET solely to resolve this file. There is no evidence that iernonce.dll belongs to those runtimes.
Driver checks: when they matter
A display, storage, or chipset driver is not the normal owner of iernonce.dll. Use Device Manager only if the computer has broader startup, storage, or hardware symptoms:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Look for devices with a warning icon.
- Right-click the affected device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart if Windows installs an update.
Outbyte Driver Updater can show which of many installed drivers is stale instead of making you hunt through Device Manager; its free scan identifies outdated drivers, while installation requires the full version. It is not a substitute for repairing Windows or reinstalling the program that created a RunOnceEx entry.
Recommended Free Tools
When to use advanced recovery
Use System Restore when:
- The error began after a recent installation or update.
- A suitable restore point exists.
- DISM and SFC do not resolve it.
Use an in-place Windows repair when:
- Windows components remain corrupted.
- Windows Update repeatedly fails.
- SFC cannot repair files after DISM.
- Other built-in Windows features are also failing.
If the file has an invalid signature, appears in an unusual directory, or is associated with a suspicious startup command, perform a full Defender scan before restoring or repairing anything.
FAQ
Is iernonce.dll part of Windows or Internet Explorer?
Both descriptions are relevant. It is a Microsoft Windows component associated with Internet Explorer and its extended RunOnceEx processing.
Is Internet Explorer required for this file?
The retirement of Internet Explorer’s desktop application does not mean every Internet Explorer-related Windows component can be deleted. Legacy compatibility and servicing components may remain in Windows.
Is a 32-bit or 64-bit PC the problem?
Possibly, especially when a file is copied from another system. Windows chooses the appropriate architecture and location for its build. Do not replace the file manually based only on its name.
Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWhy does RunDLL appear at startup?
A RunOnceEx command may be running during login or after an installation. If that command points to a missing or damaged component, Windows can display a RunDLL dialog before you open any program.
What if the error remains after DISM and SFC?
Check Windows Update again, inspect RunOnceEx safely, review Windows Security Protection history, and look for wider disk or component corruption. Then consider System Restore or an in-place Windows repair.
Can I delete every RunOnceEx entry?
No. Some entries may belong to legitimate installers or Windows operations. Back up the registry and identify the source before removing anything.
