“The program can’t start because igdumd64.dll is missing from your computer.” You may also see “igdumd64.dll was not found,” “Error loading igdumd64.dll,” or “The code execution cannot proceed because igdumd64.dll was not found.”

The 60-second answer

igdumd64.dll is a genuine Intel graphics-driver component, not a general-purpose application DLL. Its description is “LDDM User Mode Driver for Intel(R) Graphics Technology,” and older Intel Graphics Accelerator and Intel HD Graphics packages installed it on 64-bit Windows.

The safest fix is to reinstall the correct Intel graphics driver for your exact processor or GPU and Windows version. For a laptop, start with the computer manufacturer’s support page because its driver may include device-specific customizations. Use Intel’s driver package only when the OEM does not provide a suitable release.

Do not download igdumd64.dll by itself and copy it into System32, SysWOW64, or the application folder. The driver installer must also install its INF file, related DLLs, catalog signature, registry settings, and kernel-mode components.

What igdumd64.dll does

Windows graphics drivers have components that run in different parts of the operating system. igdumd64.dll is a 64-bit user-mode component in Intel’s display-driver stack. Graphics applications, games, and Windows graphics components can call into this stack when they need to render images or use hardware acceleration.

The file may appear in:

C:WindowsSystem32igdumd64.dll

That location does not mean Microsoft created the file or that it ships with every Windows installation. System32 is the standard system directory for 64-bit components on 64-bit Windows, including hardware-driver files supplied by vendors.

The 64 suffix identifies the 64-bit variant. It does not mean you should copy the file into SysWOW64. On 64-bit Windows, SysWOW64 is primarily used for 32-bit system components. Older Intel driver packages may contain a separate igdumd32.dll for 32-bit software. Architecture, driver generation, GPU, and Windows version all need to match.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The file is chiefly associated with older Intel graphics drivers, including Windows Vista and Windows 7-era WDDM packages. Historical Intel packages used different file versions and related components, so there is no single universal version, size, or download that is correct for every computer.

What the error message really means

The wording provides clues, but it does not always identify the root cause.

“Missing” or “not found”

The file may have been removed, quarantined, or never installed because the graphics driver package is incomplete. “Not found” can also mean Windows cannot locate a dependency required by igdumd64.dll, even when the named file is present.

“Could not be loaded”

Windows found the file but could not initialize it. Common causes include a damaged driver installation, incompatible driver generation, missing dependency, incorrect architecture, or a related Intel kernel-mode driver that failed to load.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“Bad image” or “not designed to run on Windows”

This usually indicates that the file is corrupt, incomplete, incompatible with the current system, or being loaded alongside mismatched driver components. If the message points to C:WindowsSystem32igdumd64.dll, that still does not prove Windows itself supplied the file.

An application crash naming igdumd64.dll

The application may be exposing a graphics-driver fault rather than owning the DLL. If several games or Windows graphics features fail, prioritize the driver. If only one old application fails, repair that application after checking the graphics driver.

A DllRegisterServer error

You may see a message such as:

The module 'igdumd64.dll' was loaded but the entry-point DllRegisterServer was not found.

That is expected when someone tries to register a graphics-driver DLL with regsvr32. regsvr32 is for self-registering COM or ActiveX DLLs that export DllRegisterServer; this display-driver component normally is not repaired that way.

Before changing anything

First establish whether the failure is limited to one application or affects the whole graphics stack.

  1. Restart Windows.
  2. Try another graphics application or game.
  3. Open Device Manager by right-clicking Start and selecting Device Manager.
  4. Expand Display adapters.
  5. Note the exact Intel graphics model and look for a yellow warning icon.
  6. Right-click the Intel adapter, select Properties, and read the message under Device status.
  7. Select the Driver tab and record the provider, date, and version.

Also check the file itself if it exists:

  1. Open File Explorer.
  2. Browse to C:WindowsSystem32.
  3. Search for igdumd64.dll.
  4. Right-click it and choose Properties.
  5. Check the Digital Signatures tab.
  6. Open the signature details and verify that Windows reports the signature as valid and that the signer is Intel Corporation.

A file with Intel-like metadata in an unexpected application folder is not automatically genuine. Do not restore or replace it until its source and signature are clear.

Fix 1: Reinstall the correct graphics driver

This is the primary repair for a missing, corrupt, or mismatched igdumd64.dll.

Use the computer manufacturer’s driver first

For a laptop or branded desktop:

  1. Identify the computer model from its label, support application, or Settings > System > About.
  2. Visit the manufacturer’s official support page using another working browser or device if necessary.
  3. Search for the exact model.
  4. Select the installed Windows version and system architecture.
  5. Download the display or graphics driver intended for that model.
  6. Close games and graphics applications.
  7. Run the downloaded installer.
  8. Choose the recommended installation option. If the installer offers a clean installation, use it when the existing driver is clearly damaged.
  9. Restart Windows even if the installer does not require it.
  10. Test the application again.

If the manufacturer does not provide a suitable package, use Intel’s official graphics-driver catalogue or Intel Driver & Support Assistant. Match the package to the exact GPU and Windows version. Do not assume a current Intel package supports an older graphics generation.

Intel warns that generic drivers can overwrite OEM customizations. On laptops, the OEM package is therefore the safer starting point.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Outbyte Driver Updater can reduce the manual work of hunting through hardware pages and comparing several driver versions: its free scan shows which drivers are outdated, while the repair or driver installation is completed by the full version. It is optional, and the OEM or Intel package remains the authoritative source for this specific driver.

If the installer refuses to run

Check the GPU model and Windows architecture again. A 32-bit application cannot be repaired by inserting an arbitrary 64-bit DLL, and a driver for a different Intel graphics generation may install incompletely or fail to initialize.

If the driver package is already installed:

  1. In Device Manager, expand Display adapters.
  2. Right-click the Intel adapter and select Uninstall device.
  3. Read the confirmation dialog carefully.
  4. Remove the driver package only if the OEM or Intel installation instructions tell you to do so.
  5. Restart Windows.
  6. Install the matching driver package immediately after Windows restarts.

Avoid repeatedly uninstalling the display adapter without having the correct replacement package available.

Fix 2: Roll back a recent driver update

If the error started immediately after a graphics-driver update or Windows update, the new driver may be incompatible with the device or an older application.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Right-click Start and select Device Manager.
  2. Expand Display adapters.
  3. Right-click the Intel graphics adapter and choose Properties.
  4. Open the Driver tab.
  5. Select Roll Back Driver.
  6. Choose a reason when prompted.
  7. Confirm and restart Windows.
  8. Test the application or game again.

If Roll Back Driver is unavailable, install the previous OEM-certified driver manually. Do not substitute a DLL from another computer.

If Windows Update keeps replacing the working driver, temporarily pause updates while you obtain the correct OEM package, then resume updates after the driver is installed. Avoid permanently disabling Windows Update.

Fix 3: Install pending Windows updates

A graphics component can fail when Windows system components and the installed driver are out of sync.

On Windows 11:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Windows Update.
  3. Choose Check for updates.
  4. Install all applicable updates.
  5. Restart when asked.
  6. Return to Windows Update and check again until no further applicable updates are offered.

On Windows 10, open Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update, select Check for updates, install the available updates, and restart.

  • High-Performance Engine Clock: Delivers an engine clock of 2540 MHz, providing the compute power needed for demanding professional applications and AI inference.

Test the application after the restart. If the error began directly after an update, use the rollback procedure instead of repeatedly installing the same problematic driver.

Fix 4: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC

Use these commands when Windows components or the Driver Store may be damaged. Microsoft recommends running DISM before System File Checker.

  1. Right-click Start.
  2. Select Terminal (Admin), Windows PowerShell (Admin), or Command Prompt (Admin).
  3. Approve the User Account Control prompt.
  4. Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  1. Wait for the operation to finish. Do not close the window if progress appears to pause.
  2. Then run:
sfc /scannow
  1. Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
  2. Restart Windows.
  3. Test the affected application.

If DISM reports that it cannot obtain repair files, install pending Windows updates and run the command again. If SFC says it found and repaired corrupted files, restart and test. If it says some files could not be repaired, repeat DISM followed by SFC, then review the result before considering System Restore or a Windows repair installation.

SFC is not a universal Intel-driver replacement. It repairs protected Windows components; reinstalling the graphics driver remains the primary repair for a missing Intel driver file.

Outbyte PC Repair can make the manual repair stage easier by scanning for the Windows problems behind repeated DISM and SFC work; its free scan identifies issues, while repair is completed by the full version. It is optional, and it does not replace installing the correct Intel or OEM graphics package.

On Windows 11, if Windows itself remains damaged, open Settings > System > Recovery, find Fix problems using Windows Update, and select Reinstall now if the option is available. This reinstalls the current Windows version while preserving apps and personal files.

Fix 5: Check antivirus quarantine

Security software may have removed a damaged or suspicious copy of the file.

  1. Open Windows Security.
  2. Select Virus & threat protection.
  3. Choose Protection history.
  4. Open the detection involving igdumd64.dll.
  5. Read the file path, detection name, and action.
  6. Run a full scan before restoring anything.

Restore or allow the file only when all of these are true:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • The file came from the correct Intel or OEM driver package.
  • Its digital signature is valid.
  • The path and related files match the installed graphics driver.
  • The security alert has been investigated rather than dismissed.

If the file came from an unknown application folder or an unofficial download, leave it quarantined and reinstall the driver from the official OEM or Intel source. If malware is suspected, run a full or offline Microsoft Defender scan.

Fix 6: Repair the affected application

If only one game or program reports the error while Device Manager shows a functioning Intel adapter, the application may be old, damaged, or incompatible with the current driver.

  1. Use the application’s launcher to select Verify, Repair, or Verify integrity of game files.
  2. Install the application’s pending updates.
  3. Restart the application.
  4. If it still fails, uninstall it from Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
  5. Restart Windows.
  6. Reinstall it from its original official source.

Do not place igdumd64.dll inside the application directory unless the application’s developer explicitly provides a complete, signed driver package. The application usually consumes the system graphics stack; it does not own this Intel DLL.

What not to do

Do not use random DLL download sites

A standalone download may contain malware, the wrong driver generation, the wrong architecture, or a modified file. Even a genuine-looking copy may not match the GPU, Windows build, INF configuration, catalog signature, or related Intel components.

Do not copy a 64-bit file into SysWOW64

The filename does not determine a safe manual destination. A 32-bit program and a 64-bit driver stack have different requirements.

Do not register it with regsvr32

igdumd64.dll is a graphics-driver component, not a normal self-registering application DLL. Registering it cannot reconstruct the driver installation and commonly produces the missing DllRegisterServer message.

Do not install unrelated runtimes first

Visual C++ Redistributable, DirectX, .NET, and Windows Features are not the normal source of this Intel graphics DLL. Install them only when a separate error specifically identifies one of those components.

If the error still remains

Collect these details before escalating to the computer manufacturer or Intel:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Exact Windows edition, build, and 32-bit or 64-bit architecture
  • Exact Intel graphics model
  • Display-driver provider and version from Device Manager
  • Full error text
  • The path named in the error
  • Whether the problem began after an update, uninstall, cleanup, antivirus action, or Windows upgrade
  • Whether other games and graphics applications fail
  • Digital-signature status of any remaining copy
  • Device Manager error code

If a clean, matching driver installation repeatedly fails, investigate BIOS and chipset updates, OEM hardware diagnostics, and possible GPU or platform failure. Persistent errors across multiple applications usually point to the graphics stack or hardware rather than to a missing application file.

FAQ

Is igdumd64.dll a Windows file or an Intel file?

It is an Intel graphics-driver component installed under a Windows system directory. Windows loads it as part of the display-driver stack, but Intel supplies the driver package.

Does every Windows 10 or Windows 11 computer have it?

No. It is chiefly associated with older Intel graphics driver packages. Its presence depends on the hardware, driver generation, operating system, and installation package.

Should I download the missing DLL?

No. Reinstall the correct OEM or Intel graphics driver so all required files and configuration are restored together.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does “64” mean I need SysWOW64?

No. It identifies the 64-bit variant. Do not infer a destination from the filename alone.

Why does the message say a dependency is missing when the file exists?

“Specified module could not be found” can refer to a dependency required by igdumd64.dll, not necessarily to igdumd64.dll itself. Reinstalling the complete driver package is safer than replacing individual files.

Will Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET fix it?

Usually not. Those are separate runtime families. Start with the Intel graphics driver, then repair Windows components if necessary.

What if only one game reports the error?

Verify or repair the game files, update or reinstall the game, and check compatibility. Still inspect the graphics driver first if other graphics applications also fail.
