If Windows says iislog.dll is missing, was not found, or could not be loaded, repair the IIS installation or application that requested it rather than downloading a replacement DLL.
This file is not a Visual C++ runtime, DirectX component, .NET assembly, or universal Windows 10/11 desktop dependency. It belongs primarily to older IIS releases, and a current Windows installation may show the error because an obsolete server application, startup entry, or incomplete migration is still looking for it.
What iislog.dll is
The file is identified as Microsoft IIS Plugin DLL and is associated with Internet Information Server, the former name for IIS. Microsoft servicing records show iislog.dll in IIS 4.0, IIS 5.0, and IIS 6.0-era files.
Microsoft records include these historical examples:

| IIS 4/5-era hotfix | Alpha | 4.2.765.1 | 112,912 bytes |
| Windows Server 2003 SP2 IIS update | x86 | 6.0.3790.3959 | 76,288 bytes |
These entries identify historical builds, not a universal version that should be copied to every computer. The old file was generally located under the IIS service directory, such as %windir%system32inetsrv, but the exact path depends on the IIS generation and operating system.
Modern IIS uses a different native-module architecture and exposes logging through IIS configuration and HTTP.sys. Microsoft’s current IIS documentation does not identify iislog.dll as a normal modern IIS module. That distinction matters: installing current IIS on Windows 10 or Windows 11 may not recreate an old IIS 5 or IIS 6 binary.
What the error means
The wording usually comes from the Windows loader. Common messages include:
iislog.dll is missing from your computeriislog.dll was not foundError loading iislog.dllThe procedure entry point ... could not be located in iislog.dlliislog.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an errorCannot register iislog.dll
The message does not identify the real owner of the file. A legacy IIS service, an old administration tool, a migrated web application, or another program may be making the request.
The wording gives useful clues:
- Missing or not found: the expected file is absent, or the application is searching the wrong directory.
- Procedure entry point not found: the file and its dependent components are from different builds.
- Not designed to run on Windows: suspect corruption, wrong architecture, or an incompatible legacy binary.
- Cannot register: the command may be inappropriate, the DLL may not expose a registration entry point, or the caller may not be IIS at all.
Start by identifying the process that requested the file. Installing unrelated runtimes before doing that often makes the problem harder to diagnose.
1. Identify the application or service requesting iislog.dll
This is the most important step, especially on Windows 10 and Windows 11.
Check when the error appears
Note whether the message appears:
- Immediately after signing in
- When starting a particular application
- When starting or stopping a Windows service
- During an installer or uninstaller
- When opening an old web-management tool
- Only when launching a game or launcher
- After restoring a disk image or migrating a server
If it appears only when one application starts, that application is the first repair target. If it appears at sign-in, look for a stale startup entry, scheduled task, or service.
Check Event Viewer
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
eventvwr.mscand press Enter. - Expand Windows Logs.
- Check Application and System.
- Select Filter Current Log in the right-hand pane.
- Review errors recorded at the time the message appeared.
- Open entries that mention a service name, executable path, module, or application.
Also check:
- Expand Applications and Services Logs.
- Review logs related to the application, IIS, installation, or security software.
- Record the executable name and full path if one is shown.
The caller’s path is more useful than the DLL filename. A request from an old server product directory points toward that product. A request from a temporary folder or an unexpected user-profile directory deserves a security review.

For services:
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
services.msc. - Press Enter.
- Sort by Startup Type or inspect services that start automatically.
- Open a suspicious service and record its Path to executable.
- Do not disable a Microsoft service solely because its name is unfamiliar. Verify the executable path first.
For startup programs:
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
- Select Startup apps.
- Look for an entry related to the old application or server software.
- Right-click it and choose Open file location where available.
- Record the parent program before disabling anything.
For scheduled tasks:
- Press the Windows key.
- Type Task Scheduler.
- Open Task Scheduler.
- Review Task Scheduler Library and vendor folders.
- Check the Actions tab for commands pointing to an obsolete installation.
If the caller was removed but its service or scheduled task remains, remove or repair the parent application rather than placing a DLL in a system directory.
2. Repair or reinstall the original IIS application
The safest and most likely fix is to repair the exact legacy IIS installation or server product that originally supplied the file.
Before changing anything, record:
- The Windows edition and architecture
- The application name and version
- The full path in the error
- The location of any existing
iislog.dll - The Event Viewer entry
- Whether the application is 32-bit or 64-bit
Then use the original installer, recovery media, or a supported vendor package for that product.
Repair an installed application
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Find the application that triggers the error.
- Select its three-dot menu.
- Choose Modify, Change, or Repair, if available.
- Follow the installer prompts.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the application again.
On some older programs, repair is available through Control Panel:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute- Open Control Panel.
- Select Programs and Features.
- Select the application.
- Choose Repair or Change.
If no repair option exists, uninstall the application, restart, and reinstall it from its original installation media. For a server product, use media matching the required Windows version and IIS generation. Current IIS should not be assumed to provide every binary from IIS 4, IIS 5, or IIS 6.
Install IIS on Windows Server
If the machine is a supported Windows Server installation and the application genuinely requires IIS, an administrator can install the Web Server role with Microsoft’s documented PowerShell command:
Install-WindowsFeature -Name Web-Server -IncludeAllSubFeature -IncludeManagementTools
Run PowerShell as an administrator:
- Open Start.
- Search for PowerShell.
- Right-click it.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run the command.
- Restart if Windows requests it.
- Confirm that the application still requires the legacy file.
Installing the Web Server role may restore the supported IIS components for that operating system. It does not guarantee that it will recreate an old iislog.dll expected by a legacy application.
Enable IIS features through Windows Features
On client Windows versions that expose IIS features:
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
optionalfeaturesand press Enter. - Expand Internet Information Services.
- Select only the features required by the application.
- Expand Web Management Tools if management tools are needed.
- Expand World Wide Web Services and review application-development and management features.
- Select OK.
- Allow Windows to apply the changes.
- Restart if prompted.
Older IIS-compatible applications may also require features such as:
- IIS 6 Metabase Compatibility
- IIS 6 WMI Compatibility
- IIS 6 Management Console
- Legacy Scripting
These features provide compatibility APIs. They are not proof that modern Windows supplies the old iislog.dll binary. If the original product requires a specific IIS generation, use the product’s supported operating system or a compatible server environment.
3. Check antivirus quarantine before replacing anything
Security software may have quarantined or deleted the file. This is especially plausible if the error started immediately after a security scan or application update.

- Select Protection history.
- Review detections from the time the error began.
- Open a relevant entry and note the detected path.
- Do not restore the file until its parent application, location, and signature have been verified.
Restore a quarantined file only when:
- It is in the expected IIS or application directory.
- It has a valid Microsoft or original-vendor digital signature where applicable.
- The product installation is known to be legitimate.
- A trusted installer or matching installation media confirms the file.
If the file was found in a temporary directory, an unrelated download folder, or an unexpected user-profile path, do not restore it automatically. Run a full security scan and investigate the parent program.

A Microsoft filename alone does not prove authenticity. Malware can use a familiar filename to appear trustworthy.
4. Check the file’s path, signature, and architecture
If iislog.dll exists, do not assume that it is the correct file.
Check the path
In File Explorer, right-click the file and select Properties. The expected historical location was generally within an IIS service directory such as:
%windir%system32inetsrv
That is not a universal rule. An application installer may place a private copy beside its own executable. The important question is whether the path matches the product that is requesting it.
Do not copy the file into C:WindowsSystem32, C:WindowsSysWOW64, or an application directory merely because an online guide suggests it.
Check the digital signature
- Right-click
iislog.dll. - Select Properties.
- Open the Digital Signatures tab, if present.
- Select the signature.
- Choose Details.
- Confirm that Windows reports a valid signature and that the signer matches the expected publisher.
An absent or invalid signature does not automatically prove malware, particularly for very old files, but it does mean the file should not be trusted without comparing it with original installation media or Microsoft servicing material.
Check 32-bit and 64-bit compatibility
A 64-bit Windows installation can run many 32-bit applications. That does not make a 32-bit DLL interchangeable with a 64-bit DLL.
The Microsoft IIS records cited for the later IIS update identify an x86 file, while older records also include Alpha builds. No current x64 iislog.dll package should be assumed.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
If the error says the file is not designed to run on Windows or an entry point is missing:
- Confirm whether the calling application is 32-bit or 64-bit.
- Use the DLL from the exact product build and architecture.
- Do not substitute a file from another IIS generation.
- Reinstall the application if the architecture cannot be confirmed.
On a 64-bit system, a 32-bit legacy application may need its own x86 component. Installing a 64-bit IIS role does not necessarily satisfy that dependency.
5. Repair Windows components when Windows owns the file
DISM and System File Checker are appropriate for protected Windows components on the affected operating-system version. They are not a way to obtain every historical IIS DLL.
First install available Windows updates and restart. Then open an elevated Command Prompt:
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for DISM to finish.
- Restart Windows if requested.
- Open an elevated Command Prompt again.
- Run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the application again.
Run DISM before SFC. If DISM reports that the source files cannot be found, install pending updates, confirm that the computer can reach Windows Update, and repeat the repair. If SFC reports that it repaired files, restart and test. If it reports that it could not repair some files, review the application and IIS installation rather than repeatedly running the same command.
Manually repeating SFC and DISM can be tedious when you do not know which component changed or whether the caller is an obsolete application. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for system problems and identify repair candidates; its full version performs the repair, but it is not required and cannot replace reinstalling the specific legacy application that owns iislog.dll.
6. Update or reinstall related drivers only when evidence points there
A graphics, storage, or chipset driver is not a normal source of iislog.dll. Do not install drivers merely because the error contains .dll.
Consider driver work only if:
- The error began after a hardware or Windows change.
- Event Viewer reports a related device or service failure.
- The calling application is a hardware-management utility.
- The application vendor specifically identifies a driver package.
For a targeted driver update:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the category for the affected device.
- Right-click the device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers, or install the driver supplied by the hardware manufacturer.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the application.
If the problem began directly after a driver update:
- Open Device Manager.
- Right-click the device.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Select Roll Back Driver, if available.
- Restart and test.
Hunting through many driver versions is unnecessary when the error points to an old IIS component. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers and show the affected versions; the full version installs updates, but driver replacement is not the definitive fix when a specific IIS application is requesting this DLL.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.7. Decide whether the application is obsolete
If the program was designed for IIS 4, IIS 5, IIS 6, or an older Windows Server release, it may not be supported on Windows 10 or Windows 11.
The practical options are:
- Install a current version of the application.
- Reinstall it on the Windows Server version it supports.
- Run the legacy workload in an appropriately isolated and maintained environment.
- Remove the obsolete service, scheduled task, or startup entry.
- Contact the application vendor for a migration path.
If the error appears during startup and the old program is no longer needed, uninstall it normally first. Then check Services, Task Scheduler, and Startup apps for remnants. Do not delete random registry entries or DLL files without identifying the parent executable.
For a game or launcher, verify the game files through the launcher only if iislog.dll is located inside that game’s installation and the launcher identifies it as part of the game. A game should not normally require a legacy IIS system component simply because the filename appears in an error.

What not to do
Do not download iislog.dll from a DLL website
Random DLL download sites can provide:
- Malware disguised with a Microsoft filename
- The wrong IIS generation
- The wrong architecture
- A file with incompatible dependencies
- A modified or unsigned binary
Even a genuine file may not fix the problem if the application also needs matching configuration, dependent DLLs, registry state, permissions, or other IIS components.
Use the original product installer, supported Windows features, Microsoft servicing, or trusted installation media instead.
Do not copy it into System32 or SysWOW64
Copying a DLL into a system directory can cause Windows to load the wrong version for another program. It can also hide the actual broken installation and complicate later servicing.
The correct location depends on the IIS generation and the application’s loading rules.

Do not run regsvr32 as a generic fix
regsvr32 registers DLLs that expose a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer. It does not repair every DLL, install IIS modules, restore missing dependencies, or recreate IIS configuration.
Do not run:
regsvr32 iislog.dll
unless the original product documentation explicitly requires registration and identifies the correct file and architecture. IIS native modules are installed and configured through IIS, not automatically repaired by registering an arbitrary DLL.
Do not use registry cleaners or DLL download sites utilities
A registry cleaner cannot reconstruct the correct IIS generation or application build. Automated DLL replacement can make a version mismatch worse. Trace the caller first.
When System Restore is appropriate
System Restore can help when the error started immediately after a known installation, removal, or cleanup operation and no repair media is available.

System Restore does not replace a supported reinstall and may not restore a complete legacy server environment.
FAQ
Is iislog.dll a Windows 11 system file?
Not as a universal Windows 11 dependency. It is associated with legacy IIS generations. If a current Windows 11 computer requests it, look for an old application, service, migration artifact, or damaged installation.
Is iislog.dll part of IIS?
Yes, historical Microsoft servicing records associate it with IIS logging components. The relevant file belongs to older IIS releases, not necessarily the modern IIS role installed today.
Should I install Visual C++ Redistributable?
Not merely because the filename ends in .dll. Microsoft records identify iislog.dll as an IIS component. Install a Visual C++ runtime only when the calling application specifically requires it.
Should I run DISM and SFC?
Run them when Windows component corruption is plausible, after updates and a restart. They may not restore a legacy IIS file that belongs to an old application rather than the current operating system.
Why is the file outside System32?
An application may keep a private copy beside its executable, or an old IIS installation may use a service directory such as inetsrv. The path must be judged against the application and IIS version. An unexpected path may indicate an unsafe or impersonating file.
Can a 32-bit application use iislog.dll on 64-bit Windows?
It may need an x86 build of the legacy component. A 64-bit operating system does not make x86 and x64 DLLs interchangeable.
Why does regsvr32 fail?
The DLL may not expose a registration entry point, the command may use the wrong 32-bit or 64-bit version of regsvr32, or the file may not be intended for manual registration. Reinstall the owning IIS application instead.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteWhat if the file exists but the error remains?
Check the exact path being loaded, file signature, application architecture, dependent DLLs, permissions, and version matching. An entry-point error usually indicates that related files come from incompatible builds.
Final troubleshooting checklist
Before escalating the issue, preserve:
- The complete error message
- The executable or service that requested
iislog.dll - The full caller path
- The Windows edition and architecture
- The application version
- The DLL path, signature status, and architecture
- The relevant Event Viewer entry
- Antivirus quarantine details
- The results of DISM and SFC, if run
The correct repair is usually to restore the original legacy IIS or server application, not to replace one DLL in isolation. If the caller is obsolete, remove or migrate that caller instead of forcing modern Windows to load an unsupported IIS component.
