Its full description is Dvorak Left-Hand US English Keyboard Layout, which maps keystrokes for the left-handed United States Dvorak layout.
When it is missing, damaged, quarantined, or requested by a broken keyboard configuration, Windows may show messages such as:
- “kbdusl.dll was not found.”
- “The code execution cannot proceed because kbdusl.dll was not found.”
- “kbdusl.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “kbdusl.dll could not be loaded.”
- “kbdusl.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
These are common Windows loader variants, not error messages documented for one particular program. The safest repair is to restore the Windows component that owns the file rather than downloading a replacement DLL.
Fix 1: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC
Time needed: 15 to 45 minutes, plus a restart
A corrupted or missing protected Windows file is the most likely cause. Microsoft recommends running Deployment Image Servicing and Management, or DISM, before System File Checker, or SFC. DISM repairs the Windows component store that SFC uses as its repair source.

Run DISM
- Save your work and close open applications.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin).
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run this optional health check:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /ScanHealth
- When it finishes, run the repair command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for the operation to reach completion. Do not close the window if progress appears to pause.
Run SFC
In the same elevated window, run:
sfc /scannow
Wait until verification reaches 100 percent. Then restart Windows:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Shut down or sign out.
- Select Restart.
Try the action that previously triggered the kbdusl.dll error, such as signing in, switching keyboard layouts, or opening the affected program.
If SFC reports that it found corrupt files and repaired them, the restart is important because Windows may need to load the repaired system copy. If SFC says it could not repair some files, run DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth again, restart, and rerun sfc /scannow. Persistent failures can be investigated in:

Fix 2: Check whether Windows still has the file
Time needed: 5 minutes
A file with the correct name is not automatically the correct or safe file. First check whether Windows can locate copies in its system directories.
- Open Start.
- Type
cmd. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run:
where /r "%windir%System32" kbdusl.dll
- Also check the redirected 32-bit system location:
where /r "%windir%SysWOW64" kbdusl.dll
These commands only locate files. They do not confirm a file’s version, architecture, digital signature, or integrity.
On 64-bit Windows, System32 is the normal native system directory despite its name. SysWOW64 is used by Windows for 32-bit system-file compatibility. The presence and representation of a separate copy can vary by Windows build, so do not assume that every computer must contain an independently usable copy in both locations.
If the commands find no copy, do not copy kbdusl.dll from another computer. Run DISM and SFC first. If a copy exists outside the Windows directories, treat it cautiously, especially if an application folder or download directory supplied it.
Fix 3: Install pending Windows updates
Time needed: 10 minutes to several hours, depending on the update
An incomplete update or component-store problem can leave a Windows input component unavailable.

Windows 11
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install available updates.
- Restart when Windows requests it.
- Return to Settings > Windows Update and check again until no further updates are offered.
Windows 10
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Update & Security.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install the available updates.
- Restart Windows.
Retest after the restart. If the error began immediately after an update, Windows may need another restart or a component repair before the keyboard layout works normally.

Fix 4: Reinstall the current Windows version on Windows 11
Time needed: 30 minutes or longer
Supported Windows 11 installations may offer Fix problems using Windows Update, which reinstalls the current Windows version while preserving personal files, installed applications, and settings.
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select System.
- Select Recovery.
- Find Fix problems using Windows Update.
- Select Reinstall now.
- Follow the on-screen instructions.
- Keep the computer connected to power and connected to the internet.
- Restart and test the keyboard layout.
This option may be unavailable because of the Windows version, update state, or management policies. If it is not shown, continue with DISM and SFC, System Restore, or an in-place Windows repair using Microsoft’s available recovery methods.

Fix 5: Remove and re-add the keyboard layout
Time needed: 5 to 10 minutes
kbdusl.dll is loaded when Windows or an input-language component activates the corresponding keyboard layout. If you do not use the left-handed Dvorak layout, removing it can stop Windows from requesting it.
The layout may be listed under a language other than the one you expect.
Remove the layout in Windows 11
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Time & language.
- Select Language & region.
- Find the relevant language.
- Select the … menu beside it.
- Select Language options.
- Under Keyboards, find the left-handed Dvorak layout.
- Select its … menu.
- Select Remove.
- Restart Windows.
If it is the only keyboard layout for that language, Windows may not allow removal. Add another keyboard layout first, then remove the unwanted one.
Remove the layout in Windows 10
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Time & Language.
- Select Language.
- Select the language that contains the keyboard.
- Select Options.
- Under Keyboards, select the left-handed Dvorak layout.
- Select Remove.
- Restart Windows.
If you need the layout, remove it and add it again instead of deleting any DLL manually. Use Add a keyboard, select the appropriate Dvorak layout, and then restart.

If the error occurs only in one user account, create or test another Windows user profile. If the second profile works, the issue may be a damaged profile-specific keyboard configuration rather than a missing system file. This is a troubleshooting distinction, not proof that the DLL itself is different between profiles.
Fix 6: Check Windows Security quarantine
Time needed: 5 to 15 minutes
Antivirus software can quarantine a legitimate system file after a false detection. A quarantine event does not prove that the file was malware, and a missing file does not prove that the computer was infected.
- Open Start.
- Type Windows Security.
- Open the application.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent detections involving
kbdusl.dll. - Expand a relevant entry and inspect its path and detection details.
Restore or allow the file only if you can confirm that it is the genuine Microsoft copy and the detection is a false positive. If the detection identifies a suspicious copy outside the normal Windows system location, leave it quarantined and repair Windows with DISM and SFC instead.

Fix 7: Do not register this DLL with regsvr32
Time needed: No command required
Do not use this command as a repair:
regsvr32 kbdusl.dll
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer, commonly used by COM or ActiveX components. kbdusl.dll is a Windows keyboard-layout DLL, not a COM/ActiveX server. Running regsvr32 may produce an error such as “entry-point DllRegisterServer was not found,” and successful registration would not repair a missing or damaged keyboard layout.
Repair this file through Windows servicing, keyboard-language settings, Windows Update, or Windows recovery. Microsoft documents the scope of regsvr32.
Fix 8: Check Windows architecture and avoid manual replacement
Time needed: 5 minutes
A 32-bit/64-bit mismatch, a file from another Windows build, or a manually copied DLL can cause “bad image” and “not designed to run on Windows” errors.
To check your system type:
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select System.
- Select About.
- Look at System type.
Do not overwrite a protected Windows DLL while Windows is running. Do not rename a downloaded DLL into kbdusl.dll, and do not replace a native system file with one copied from another PC. The correct file must match the installed Windows build, servicing level, architecture, and system component state.
Windows keyboard-layout DLLs are normally installed under:

This does not mean that copying the file into both folders is a valid repair. Microsoft’s file-system redirector documentation explains why these directories behave differently.
Fix 9: Update Windows input and hardware drivers only when symptoms point there
Time needed: 10 to 30 minutes
kbdusl.dll is not normally repaired through a keyboard hardware driver. Device Manager cannot restore a missing Windows keyboard-layout DLL. Still, driver problems may be relevant if the error is accompanied by a keyboard that is not detected, USB failures, or broader input problems.
Check Device Manager
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Keyboards.
- Right-click the affected physical keyboard.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart if Windows installs an update.
Do not uninstall a keyboard device merely because kbdusl.dll is missing. If the physical keyboard works and only the Dvorak layout fails, focus on Windows repair and Language & region settings.

Do not use Turn Windows features on or off to search for kbdusl.dll. The file is supplied as part of Windows and is not a separately enabled .NET Framework, Media Feature, or Visual C++ feature.
Likewise, reinstalling Visual C++, DirectX, a game runtime, or .NET is not a targeted repair for this keyboard-layout DLL unless a separate error identifies one of those components. A third-party application may display the message, but the underlying request can still come from Windows input-layout loading.
Avoid third-party DLL downloads
A random DLL download can contain malware, the wrong Windows build, the wrong architecture, or a modified file. Even a clean file with the right name may not fix the component store, keyboard configuration, quarantine event, or update damage that caused the error.
Use Windows Update, DISM, SFC, Windows recovery, and the keyboard settings built into Windows. If a security product removed the file, review Protection history and repair Windows rather than downloading an unrelated copy.

A particular game or application should not be blamed without evidence. The program may simply be the first place where Windows exposes an input-layout problem.

If the error began after a recent update, driver installation, registry change, or software installation, System Restore may return Windows to an earlier working state.
- Open Start.
- Type recovery.
- Open Recovery.
- Select Open System Restore.
- Choose a restore point from before the error began.
- Review the affected programs.
- Start the restoration and allow Windows to restart.
System Restore does not replace personal documents, but it can remove applications, drivers, or updates installed after the selected restore point.

If System Restore is unavailable or does not help, use a Windows repair installation or the applicable recovery option. Back up important files first. Microsoft lists System Restore and Windows reinstallation among its Windows recovery options.

Is there a Microsoft download package for this DLL?

Why does a program report the error if this is a Windows input file?

If repair still fails, review %windir%LogsCBSCBS.log and move to System Restore or a Windows repair installation.
Is SysWOW64 the 32-bit Windows folder?
On 64-bit Windows, it is the compatibility location used for 32-bit system files. System32 remains the native system directory. Do not copy files between these folders manually.
