imagesupport.dll errors usually appear as “This application failed to start because imagesupport.dll was not found,” “The file imagesupport.dll is missing or corrupted,” or “imagesupport.dll could not be loaded.” The safest fix is to repair or reinstall the ABBYY FineReader installation that owns imagesupport.dll, not to download a replacement DLL.

What imagesupport.dll is
imagesupport.dll is associated with ABBYY FineReader and has the internal description Image Support. ABBYY’s FineReader Engine documentation identifies Image Support as an engine module used for opening images.
This makes it an application DLL, not a general Windows runtime. FineReader normally loads it from its own installation directory or from a directory used by the application that bundled the OCR engine.

- FineReader was partially uninstalled or upgraded.
- A disk-cleanup utility removed an application file.
- A backup or migration restored only part of the FineReader installation.

appwiz.cpl. - Press Enter.
- In Programs and Features, find ABBYY FineReader PDF or the relevant ABBYY FineReader entry.
- Select it.
- Click Change.
- Select Repair.
- Follow the installation wizard.
- Restart Windows.
- Open the application that previously showed the error.
If the installer asks for installation media, browse to the original FineReader installer or use the installation source supplied with the scanner or printer. Do not point the wizard to a random DLL file.
How to tell whether Repair worked
Repair was successful if:
- FineReader opens without the
imagesupport.dllmessage. - The original OCR or scanning function works.
- The file is restored inside the FineReader installation directory.
- No new loader or “bad image” error appears.
If Repair finishes but the error returns, continue with the next section rather than repeatedly running Repair.

Record the serial number and activation details. If the program came with hardware, retain the original device software package.
Remove the damaged installation
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
appwiz.cpl. - Press Enter.
- Select the ABBYY FineReader entry.
- Click Uninstall or Change, then choose the removal option.
- Restart Windows when prompted.
Do not manually delete random DLLs from Windows folders. If the uninstaller fails, restart Windows and try again. You can also run the original installer and look for a Repair, Modify, or Remove option.
Install it again
- Run the original FineReader installer.
- If Windows displays a security prompt, confirm that the installer came from ABBYY or the original device manufacturer.
- Follow the setup wizard.
- Re-enter activation details if requested.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the exact shortcut that previously failed.
If the error came from scanner software, reinstall the scanner package rather than installing a different FineReader edition. The device software may depend on a particular older OCR component.
Step 4: Check Windows Security quarantine
A security product can remove or block an application DLL. This is especially relevant if FineReader worked previously and the error began immediately after a scan.

Repairing or reinstalling FineReader is usually safer than restoring a loose DLL. Do not create a broad antivirus exclusion for the FineReader folder without understanding the security consequences.
Step 5: Check 32-bit and 64-bit compatibility
A 64-bit version of Windows can run older 32-bit FineReader software. That does not mean a 32-bit imagesupport.dll should be copied into System32.
Remember:
C:WindowsSystem32is normally associated with 64-bit system components on 64-bit Windows.C:WindowsSysWOW64contains many 32-bit Windows components.- Application DLLs normally belong in the application’s own installation directory.
- A 32-bit FineReader program needs matching 32-bit application components.
- A 64-bit FineReader program needs compatible 64-bit components.
Current FineReader PDF releases may use a 64-bit application architecture, but that does not establish the architecture of an older imagesupport.dll. Do not replace an old bundled component with a file from a newer release.
If the message says the file is “not designed to run on Windows” or reports a bad image, the cause may be:
- A damaged DLL
- The wrong architecture
- A mismatched FineReader release
- A missing dependency
- A DLL loaded from the wrong directory
The correct response is to reinstall the matching parent application, not to move files between system folders.

Do not install Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET automatically just because a DLL message appears. These runtimes are not the primary fix for an absent ABBYY application file.
Install a runtime only when the complete error, Event Viewer entry, or the parent application’s documentation specifically identifies it. If Visual C++ is required, the architecture must match the application. A 32-bit application may require the x86 package even when Windows itself is 64-bit.
To inspect an application error:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Event Viewer.
- Expand Windows Logs.
- Select Application.
- Look for an error at the same time the FineReader failure occurred.
- Read the Faulting application name, Faulting module name, and any dependency message.
- Record the details before making changes.
If Event Viewer names another missing runtime rather than imagesupport.dll, address that dependency according to the parent application’s requirements. Do not assume that installing every available runtime will solve the problem.
Step 7: Repair broader Windows components with DISM and SFC
imagesupport.dll is not a protected Windows component, so System File Checker will not normally recreate it. Use Windows repair commands when other Windows features are also failing or when the FineReader installer itself cannot run correctly.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC. Open an elevated Command Prompt:
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
Wait for it to finish. Then run:
sfc /scannow
These commands can take time. Do not close the window while either scan is running.

Interpret the result
If DISM completes successfully and SFC reports that it found and repaired corrupted files:
- Restart Windows.
- Run the FineReader Repair option again.
- Test the application.
If SFC reports that it could not repair all files, restart and run the commands again only if Windows corruption symptoms continue. If the FineReader error is the only problem, reinstalling FineReader remains the direct fix.

Driver reinstall is relevant only when the failing program is a scanner or printer bundle that includes FineReader components. It is not a direct repair for imagesupport.dll.

- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Imaging devices, Cameras, Printers, or Universal Serial Bus controllers, depending on the hardware.
- Right-click the relevant device.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Record the provider and driver version.
- If the device has a warning icon, select Uninstall device.
- Restart Windows.
- Install the driver and scanner software from the device manufacturer’s official package.
- Restart again and test the scanner application.
Do not uninstall a working device merely because FineReader reports imagesupport.dll. Use Device Manager only when the scanner package itself is failing or the device is not detected.

System Restore is appropriate when the error began immediately after a software installation, update, cleanup operation, or driver change and no usable FineReader installer is available.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
rstrui.exe. - Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point created before the error began.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Review the changes.
- Select Next, then Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart.
System Restore rolls back system settings, installed programs, and drivers. It does not normally remove personal files. After Windows starts, test FineReader again.

Do not download imagesupport.dll from random sites
Downloading a standalone DLL is risky because:
- The file may contain malware or may have been modified.
- The version may not match your FineReader edition.
- The architecture may be wrong.
- The file may require other missing components.
- Windows may continue loading a damaged or incorrect copy.
- Copying it to
System32orSysWOW64can create additional compatibility problems. - It does not repair the installation that lost the file.
regsvr32 is also not a general DLL repair command. It registers DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. There is no verified basis for treating imagesupport.dll as an ActiveX or COM server, so running commands such as these is normally inappropriate:
regsvr32 imagesupport.dll
