Before copying files or changing Windows settings, identify the application that is requesting imagetools.dll.

Check these details:

  1. Which program shows the error? Note the application name and the executable named in the message.
  2. What is the complete error text? Preserve the wording, including whether it says “was not found,” “missing,” “corrupted,” or “specified module could not be found.”
  3. When did the problem begin? Look for a connection with reinstalling, updating, moving, cleaning up, or quarantining the application.
  4. Is the application 32-bit or 64-bit? imagetools.dll is commonly reported as a legacy 32-bit DLL. A 32-bit program can run on 64-bit Windows, but it still requires a compatible 32-bit dependency.
  5. Where is the application installed? A private DLL normally belongs beside the program that uses it, not in a Windows system folder.

The most useful information is the exact application name and full error text. Do not begin advanced repairs until you know which program is calling the file.

What imagetools.dll is

imagetools.dll is an old third-party Windows library associated with Spruce Technologies ImageTools. It is not a standard Windows component and should not normally be treated like a system file.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The clearest documented application association is Acoustica CD/DVD Label Maker. Acoustica has specifically documented a missing Imagetools.dll problem and recommends installing a fresh copy of the program.

Some public file records describe the file as a Win32 DLL named ImageTools, with historical metadata commonly reported as version 2.0.0.0, a size of roughly 260 KB, and copyright information from the late 1990s or around 2000. Those details come from file inventories rather than a current vendor-maintained binary, so use them only as clues when identifying an existing installation.

Spruce Technologies was acquired by Apple, and there is no current official Spruce redistributable that should be downloaded separately. The correct repair is usually to restore the complete application that originally installed the DLL.

Error messages you may see

The wording varies by application and Windows version. Common examples include:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • “This application failed to start because imagetools.dll was not found.”
  • “The file imagetools.dll is missing or corrupted.”
  • “A required component is missing: imagetools.dll. Please install the application again.”
  • “Error loading imagetools.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
  • “The program can’t start because imagetools.dll is missing from your computer.”

These messages do not always mean that the DLL itself is absent. “The specified module could not be found” can also mean that imagetools.dll exists but one of its dependent files is missing.

Fix 1: Repair or reinstall the application

This is the safest and most likely fix, especially if the error names Acoustica CD/DVD Label Maker or another older graphics, media, or authoring application.

Reinstalling the parent application restores the correct DLL version, related files, registry settings, shortcuts, and application-specific dependencies together.

Before uninstalling

Save any documents, templates, projects, or custom settings that belong to the affected program. If the application stores files in its installation folder, copy those files to another location first.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Also record the current installation path. You may need it later if an old shortcut continues launching a duplicate copy.

Uninstall the damaged program

On Windows 11:

  1. Right-click Start and select Installed apps.
  2. Find the application that reports the error.
  3. Select the three-dot menu beside it.
  4. Choose Uninstall.
  5. Follow the program’s removal wizard.

On Windows 10:

  1. Open Start and select Settings.
  2. Select Apps.
  3. Choose Apps & features.
  4. Select the affected program.
  5. Click Uninstall and complete the prompts.

If it is not listed there:

  1. Press Windows key.
  2. Type Control Panel and open it.
  3. Select Programs, then Programs and Features.
  4. Select the affected application.
  5. Choose Uninstall.

Restart Windows after the uninstall finishes.

Install a clean copy

Use the original installer, trusted installation media, or the software publisher’s official download page. For Acoustica CD/DVD Label Maker, use Acoustica’s official product or support pages rather than searching for the DLL separately.

After installation:

  1. Open the program from the new Start menu shortcut.
  2. Confirm that the original error no longer appears.
  3. Open a representative project or file.
  4. If the program still fails, right-click its shortcut, select Properties, and inspect the Target field. Confirm it points to the newly installed copy.

If the program has a built-in Repair option in Windows:

  1. Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
  2. Select the three-dot menu beside the program.
  3. Choose Advanced options, if available.
  4. Select Repair.
  5. Test the application.

Not every legacy program provides this option. When it does not, a complete reinstall is more dependable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 2: Check the application folder and antivirus quarantine

Legacy applications often expect private DLLs to be in the same folder as the executable. Windows searches the application directory as part of its normal DLL loading process.

Do not copy imagetools.dll into C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64 as a first remedy. That can create version conflicts and architecture errors, and it does not repair the application’s other missing files.

Check the installation folder

  1. Right-click the application shortcut.
  2. Select Properties.
  3. On the Shortcut tab, select Open File Location.
  4. Look for the application executable and related files.
  5. Check whether imagetools.dll is present beside the executable.

If the DLL is missing, reinstall the application rather than sourcing the file separately.

If the DLL is present but the error remains:

  1. Confirm that the shortcut’s Target points to that same folder.
  2. Look for duplicate installations in locations such as Program Files, Program Files (x86), or an old custom folder.
  3. Launch the executable directly from its current installation folder.
  4. If the direct launch works, delete or recreate the outdated shortcut.

Check antivirus quarantine

Security software may remove or quarantine an old DLL, particularly if the file is unsigned or resembles a suspicious legacy component.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

In Windows Security:

  1. Open Start and search for Windows Security.
  2. Select Virus & threat protection.
  3. Choose Protection history.
  4. Review recent detections.
  5. Look for an entry associated with the affected application or imagetools.dll.

Do not restore the file merely because its name matches the error. Restore it only when:

  • It belongs to the application you intentionally installed.
  • Its location matches the application’s installation folder.
  • The security alert is understood.
  • The application was obtained from a trusted publisher or original installation media.

If you restore a quarantined file, run a full security scan afterward. If the detection is unclear, leave the file quarantined and reinstall the application from its official source.

Fix 3: Check 32-bit and 64-bit compatibility

The commonly reported imagetools.dll build is 32-bit. That is not automatically a problem on a 64-bit edition of Windows. Windows includes WOW64 compatibility for running many 32-bit applications.

  • PRODUCT SHIPS IN PLAIN ENVELOPE | Activation key is located under scratch-off area on label.

The important rule is:

  • A 32-bit process needs a 32-bit DLL.
  • A 64-bit process needs a 64-bit DLL.
  • A file with the right name but the wrong architecture will not solve the problem.

To check whether Windows is 64-bit:

  1. Right-click Start.
  2. Select System.
  3. Find System type under Device specifications.

To identify a 32-bit application, inspect its installation location. Programs under C:Program Files (x86) are commonly 32-bit, although the folder alone is not conclusive.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the program is very old, install the original compatible build instead of trying to substitute a newer file with the same name. Do not use a random 64-bit imagetools.dll for a 32-bit application.

If installation succeeds but the program still reports the DLL error, remove duplicate copies and confirm that Windows is launching the newly installed executable.

Fix 4: Run the application with compatibility settings

Current Windows versions may run many older applications, but compatibility is not guaranteed for every Spruce-era program.

To try compatibility settings:

  1. Right-click the application executable or shortcut.
  2. Select Properties.
  3. Open the Compatibility tab.
  4. Select Run this program in compatibility mode for.
  5. Choose an older Windows version from the list.
  6. Select Apply, then OK.
  7. Launch the application again.

You can also select Run this program as an administrator if the application requires access to a protected folder. Use that setting only for the affected application and only when ordinary launching fails.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Compatibility mode will not recreate a missing DLL. Use it after reinstalling the parent program, not instead of reinstalling it.

Fix 5: Check application prerequisites before installing runtimes

Do not automatically install Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET because imagetools.dll is missing. There is no specific evidence that those packages are the normal remedy for this file.

First inspect:

  • The application’s installer folder.
  • Its readme or setup documentation.
  • The publisher’s support instructions.
  • The full error text.
  • Any separate error naming a runtime or framework.

If the installer explicitly identifies a required Microsoft runtime, install that runtime from Microsoft’s official website and choose the architecture required by the application. Installing unrelated runtime packages can add complexity without restoring the missing application library.

Windows Features may help only when the error identifies an optional Windows component:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Start and search for Turn Windows features on or off.
  2. Open the result.
  3. Enable only the feature named by the application’s documentation.
  4. Select OK.
  5. Restart Windows if prompted.
  6. Test the application.

Do not enable features at random to repair imagetools.dll.

Fix 6: Update or reinstall related drivers only when indicated

A missing private DLL is not normally a device-driver problem. Consider drivers only if the application also reports graphics, printing, optical-drive, or hardware initialization errors.

To update a driver through Device Manager:

  1. Right-click Start.
  2. Select Device Manager.
  3. Expand the relevant category, such as Display adapters, Printers, DVD/CD-ROM drives, or Sound, video and game controllers.
  4. Right-click the device.
  5. Select Update driver.
  6. Choose Search automatically for drivers.
  7. Restart Windows if a driver is installed.

For a damaged driver:

  1. Open Device Manager.
  2. Right-click the relevant device.
  3. Select Uninstall device.
  4. Confirm the removal.
  5. Restart Windows.
  6. Install the driver from the hardware manufacturer if Windows does not restore it.

Outbyte Driver Updater can reduce the manual work of hunting through hardware versions when several drivers may be stale; its free scan shows what it finds, while driver installation is handled by the full version. It is optional, and reinstalling the application remains the definitive fix when imagetools.dll belongs to that application.

Fix 7: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC

Because imagetools.dll is a third-party application file, Windows component repair is a secondary step. It is useful when other Windows files are also damaged or several applications are failing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Microsoft recommends running DISM before System File Checker.

Run DISM

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Command Prompt.
  3. Right-click Command Prompt.
  4. Select Run as administrator.
  5. Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
  6. Enter:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  1. Press Enter.
  2. Wait for the operation to complete.

A successful result reports that the restore operation completed successfully. Restart Windows and continue with SFC.

Run System File Checker

In the same elevated Command Prompt, enter:

sfc /scannow

Press Enter and wait until verification reaches 100 percent.

Possible results include:

  • No integrity violations: protected Windows files are not the apparent cause.
  • Corrupt files repaired: restart Windows and test the application.
  • Some files could not be repaired: reinstall the parent application and review the CBS log only if further Windows diagnosis is necessary.

These commands repair protected Windows components. They are not a dependable way to obtain a missing Spruce Technologies DLL.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When repeatedly running DISM and SFC becomes guesswork, Outbyte PC Repair can show the issues found during its free scan, while repairs are performed by the full version. It is optional and does not replace reinstalling the application that owns imagetools.dll.

Why regsvr32 usually does not apply

regsvr32 is not a general DLL installation command. It is intended for DLLs that provide registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer, commonly used by certain COM or ActiveX components.

There is no verified evidence that imagetools.dll is a self-registering COM or ActiveX library. Running this command is therefore unlikely to repair the error:

regsvr32 imagetools.dll

It may return an error such as “DllRegisterServer was not found.”

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use regsvr32 only when the application’s official documentation specifically instructs you to register this file or confirms that it exposes the required registration entry point. Otherwise, repair the parent application and restore the DLL to its application directory.

If reinstalling does not fix the error

Work through these checks in order:

Confirm the active executable

An old shortcut, scheduled task, startup entry, or file association may launch a different copy.

  1. Right-click the shortcut and select Properties.
  2. Review the Target path.
  3. Select Open File Location.
  4. Launch the executable directly.
  5. Remove obsolete shortcuts or duplicate installations.

Check per-user configuration

If only one Windows account receives the error:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Accounts, then Other users.
  3. Choose Add account.
  4. Create a temporary local test account.
  5. Sign in to that account.
  6. Install or launch the application if permitted.

If it works in the new profile, the original account may have damaged per-user settings. Copy personal data carefully and repair the application’s profile according to its documentation.

Use System Restore cautiously

If the application worked previously and a restore point predates the failure:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Start and search for Create a restore point.
  2. Open it.
  3. Select System Restore.
  4. Choose a restore point from before the problem began.
  5. Review the affected programs.
  6. Create a backup of important personal files.
  7. Proceed only if you understand the changes.

System Restore is not a replacement for reinstalling the application and may remove later drivers or applications.

Consider an obsolete replacement

If the program is no longer supported, current Windows compatibility may remain uncertain even after its files are restored. Use compatibility settings or a supported legacy environment when the application is essential.

If the program is no longer needed, uninstall it instead of restoring an obsolete DLL. Also remove its startup shortcut or scheduled launch entry if it continues generating errors.

Is downloading imagetools.dll separately safe?

Do not download this DLL from an unauthorised file repository or copy one supplied by an unknown source. The file may contain malware, belong to the wrong application, have the wrong architecture, or be an incompatible version. Even a genuine file may not fix missing dependencies, incorrect paths, or a damaged installation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use these sources instead:

  • The original application installer.
  • Installation media you obtained with the software.
  • The software publisher’s official download or support page.
  • An official repair or verification function built into the application or launcher.

There is no verified current official Spruce package that should be installed independently. For Acoustica CD/DVD Label Maker, obtain a fresh installation through Acoustica’s official product channel.

FAQ

Is imagetools.dll a Windows file?

No. It is associated with Spruce Technologies ImageTools and is not a standard Windows component. It should normally be stored with the legacy application that needs it.

Which program installed imagetools.dll?

Acoustica CD/DVD Label Maker is the clearest documented association. Other older applications may use the library, but there is no exhaustive verified list. The application named in the error is the best starting point.

Should I put it in System32?

No. Do not copy it into System32 or SysWOW64 as a first repair. Restore it through the parent application so the correct file and related dependencies are installed together.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do I need Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET?

Not automatically. Install those components only when the application documentation or a separate error specifically identifies one of them.

Is the DLL 32-bit or 64-bit?

Public records commonly identify this legacy build as a 32-bit Win32 DLL. A 32-bit application can use it on 64-bit Windows through WOW64, but a 64-bit process cannot load a 32-bit DLL.

Why does the error say “specified module could not be found” when the file exists?

The DLL may have a missing dependency, may be in the wrong folder, or may not match the application’s architecture. Reinstall the application and confirm that its executable and private DLLs are in the same installation.

Will regsvr32 fix the problem?

Usually not. regsvr32 applies to self-registering DLLs, and there is no verified evidence that imagetools.dll requires registration.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What if antivirus removed the file?

Review Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Protection history. Restore only a file clearly belonging to the legitimate application, then rescan. Reinstalling from the official source is safer when the detection is uncertain.

When should I uninstall the application instead?

Uninstall it when you no longer need the obsolete program, when no trusted installer is available, or when it repeatedly launches errors without a supported repair path. Remove its shortcuts and startup entries so Windows stops trying to launch it.
