Start with this diagnostic checklist
imagxpr5.dll is an old third-party imaging component, not a Windows system DLL. If Windows reports that imagxpr5.dll is missing, the application that originally installed it is usually incomplete, damaged, incompatible, or blocked from loading it.
Before changing anything, record these details:
- Which program displays the error: Nero, NeroVision, Nero Express, an imaging application, or another older desktop program.
- When the error appears: during Windows startup, when opening the program, while importing images, or after an uninstall, upgrade, restore, or antivirus detection.
- Whether the application is 32-bit: public file metadata identifies
imagxpr5.dllas a Win32, 32-bit DLL. A 32-bit application needs its 32-bit components even on 64-bit Windows. - Where the application is installed: check the program’s own folder before checking Windows folders.
- Whether antivirus removed the file: review Windows Security protection history before restoring anything.
- Whether the application is still supported: a missing DLL can be a symptom of a larger compatibility problem with old software.
Do not start by downloading a loose copy of imagxpr5.dll, copying it to System32, or running regsvr32. Those actions often install the wrong release and do not repair the application that needs the file.

What imagxpr5.dll is
imagxpr5.dll is identified in public file metadata as ImagXpress v5.0, a 32-bit imaging component associated with the historical Pegasus Imaging software line. The current product owner, Accusoft, describes ImagXpress as a commercial imaging SDK that is available to existing customers rather than as a current standalone Windows component.

The file is not supplied as part of Windows 10 or Windows 11. It is also not a generic Microsoft runtime file. The reported version, size, and copyright details found in old file databases are historical metadata, not confirmation of a current official download.
Common reported messages include:
- “This application failed to start because imagxpr5.dll was not found.”
- “The file imagxpr5.dll is missing or corrupted.”
- “A required component is missing: imagxpr5.dll.”
- “Windows cannot find …imagxpr5.dll.”
- An application-specific message saying that the DLL could not be loaded
The wording does not identify the root cause by itself. The parent application, its dependencies, its installation path, and the security software blocking it all need to be checked.
Fix 1: Repair or reinstall the application that needs the DLL
This is the safest and most likely solution.
Identify the parent application
Look at the title bar and the complete error message. If the message appears immediately after launching Nero, NeroVision, or Nero Express, treat that program as the owner of the missing component.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesIf the message appears during startup but does not name a program:
- Press
Ctrl+Shift+Escto open Task Manager. - Select Startup apps.
- Note older media, imaging, or disc-authoring programs.
- Select the likely program and choose Disable temporarily.
- Restart Windows.
- If the error disappears, open or repair that application directly.
Also check Settings > Apps > Installed apps and search for Nero, ImagXpress-related software, image tools, scanners, or older educational applications.
Use the application’s repair option
For a desktop program that exposes a repair command:
- Press
Windows+I. - Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Find the program named in the error.
- Select the three dots beside it.
- Choose Advanced options if available.
- Select Repair.
- Restart Windows.
- Launch the application again.
Traditional desktop programs do not always show an Advanced options or Repair button. If it is absent, open the original installer instead.

If repair is unavailable or does not work:
- Back up the application’s projects, presets, licenses, and user data.
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Select the affected application.
- Choose Uninstall.
- Restart Windows.
- Run the original installer as administrator.
- Install the complete application without mixing files from another release.
- Restart Windows again.
- Open the application and repeat the action that produced the error.
For old Nero software, use the latest release that officially supports your Windows edition when one is available. If the program is discontinued, use the original installer and test it with Windows compatibility settings. Do not combine imagxpr5.dll from one Nero release with imagx5.dll, imagr5.dll, or other components from another release.
Test compatibility settings
If the installer or application will not start:
- Right-click the installer or program shortcut.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Compatibility tab.
- Select Run this program in compatibility mode for.
- Test the oldest Windows version that the application officially supported.
- Select Run this program as an administrator only if the application requires it.
- Select Apply, then OK.
- Run the installer or application again.
Compatibility mode may help an old installer launch, but it cannot make unsupported software secure or restore missing application files.
How to tell whether this fix worked
The repair is successful when:
- The application opens without the
imagxpr5.dllmessage. - The feature that previously failed, such as image import or disc-authoring preview, works normally.
- The repaired application uses one consistent installation directory.
- No copy of the DLL had to be downloaded from an unofficial source.
If reinstalling produces the same message, continue with the checks below rather than copying a DLL into a Windows folder.
Fix 2: Check whether antivirus quarantined the file
Security software may remove an old DLL because it is unsigned, unusual, or located in an unexpected directory. A detection does not prove that the file is malicious, but it must be investigated before restoration.
Review Windows Security
- Open the Start menu.
- Type Windows Security.
- Open it.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Look for an event involving
imagxpr5.dllor the affected application. - Expand the event and record the detected path and threat name.
Do not choose Allow on device immediately. First confirm that:
- The file was installed by the legitimate application installer.
- The path belongs to the application rather than a temporary or suspicious directory.
- The application came from trusted original media or a vendor installer.
- The antivirus report is not identifying a modified or injected DLL.
If the file was quarantined and its origin is uncertain, reinstall the complete application instead of restoring the isolated file. Reinstallation replaces the component from a known matching source and restores related files that may also be missing.
If the file is restored, launch the application and run a full Microsoft Defender scan. If the detection returns, stop using the application until the vendor or security provider explains the result.
Fix 3: Check the application folder and dependency chain
A message naming imagxpr5.dll does not always mean that this file alone is missing. Windows may be unable to load it because another module that it requires is absent, incompatible, or damaged.

Check the expected location
- Right-click the application shortcut.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Shortcut tab.
- Select Open File Location.
- Look for
imagxpr5.dllin the program’s folder and its documented subfolders.
Do not assume that a copy in C:WindowsSystem32 is correct. A file in System32 is not automatically a Windows-owned file, and older installers sometimes placed third-party components there. The correct location depends on the application’s installation design.
If the file exists in the application directory but the error continues, likely causes include:
- A missing dependency such as another old imaging module
- A damaged or mismatched application release
- Incorrect permissions
- A 32-bit application being given incompatible 64-bit components
- A security product blocking the load
- An old program that cannot run correctly on the current Windows version
Use the application’s installer logs or a reputable dependency-analysis tool in a controlled support environment to identify the first module that fails. Replacing imagxpr5.dll repeatedly will not fix a different missing dependency.
Check file permissions
- Right-click the application folder.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Security tab.
- Select your Windows account.
- Confirm that you have Read & execute permission.
- If you administer the computer, use the application installer’s repair function rather than changing broad permissions manually.
Avoid granting Everyone full control of an old application directory. That can make an already unsupported program easier to tamper with.
Fix 4: Match 32-bit software with 32-bit dependencies
Public metadata identifies imagxpr5.dll as a 32-bit Win32 DLL. That matters even when Windows itself is 64-bit.
A 32-bit application generally needs:
- Its 32-bit application DLLs
- The x86 version of any required Microsoft Visual C++ runtime
- A complete set of components from the same application release
Do not interpret the folder name System32 as meaning that every file there is 64-bit. Windows uses System32 for native system binaries and SysWOW64 for 32-bit compatibility binaries. You should not manually move this application DLL between those directories.
If the installer specifically reports a missing Microsoft runtime:
- Note whether the application is 32-bit or 64-bit.
- Install the runtime architecture named by the application.
- For a 32-bit application, the x86 runtime is normally the relevant package.
- Restart Windows.
- Launch the application again.
A Visual C++ Redistributable package does not contain imagxpr5.dll. It may resolve a secondary dependency, but it will not replace the parent application’s missing imaging component.
Fix 5: Repair Windows components only when Windows itself is damaged
Because imagxpr5.dll is a third-party application file, System File Checker normally will not recreate it. Use DISM and SFC when Windows has broader symptoms, such as damaged built-in apps, failed updates, unexplained system errors, or corruption affecting multiple programs.
Run DISM
- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for the operation to finish.
- Restart Windows.
Run System File Checker
After the restart:
- Open Command Prompt as administrator again.
- Run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the affected application.
Success means that Windows reports repaired component-store or protected-system-file problems and other Windows symptoms improve. It does not necessarily mean that imagxpr5.dll will reappear, because SFC is not an application installer.
Running these commands repeatedly without checking what changed makes troubleshooting harder; note the result and return to repairing the parent application if the DLL error remains.
If you prefer a guided scan rather than repeatedly hunting through Windows repair commands, Outbyte PC Repair can show what its free scan identifies; repair is performed by the full version, and reinstalling the application remains the definitive fix when imagxpr5.dll belongs to that program.
Fix 6: Update or reinstall related drivers only when the symptoms point to hardware
Drivers are not the first suspect for an imagxpr5.dll error. Consider them when the failure occurs while using a scanner, camera, capture device, optical drive, or graphics hardware and Device Manager also shows a warning.
Check Device Manager
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand categories such as Display adapters, Imaging devices, Cameras, Sound, video and game controllers, and DVD/CD-ROM drives.
- Look for a yellow warning icon.
- Right-click the affected device.
- Select Properties.
- Read the message under Device status.
- Open the Driver tab and note the provider and date.
To update through Windows:
- Right-click the device.
- Select Update driver.
- Select Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if prompted.
- Test the application.
To reinstall a damaged device entry:
- Right-click the device in Device Manager.
- Select Uninstall device.
- Confirm only if you have the correct replacement driver available.
- Restart Windows.
- Install the driver supplied by the hardware manufacturer.
- Test the application.
Do not remove an important storage or display driver without a recovery plan.
If checking every device manually is the frustrating part, Outbyte Driver Updater can use its free scan to identify stale drivers; driver installation is handled by the full version, and it is still best to obtain the final driver from the hardware manufacturer when the affected application is hardware-specific.

Turning on random Windows Features will not normally restore imagxpr5.dll. Use this check only if the application’s installer or documentation explicitly requires an older Windows component.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Press
Windows+R. - Type:
optionalfeatures
- Press Enter.
- Review the listed features.
- Enable only the feature named by the application’s installer.
- Select OK.
- Restart Windows if requested.
- Test the program.
Do not enable old components merely because the DLL error mentions a legacy application. Some old features introduce compatibility or security concerns, and they do not replace the vendor’s application files.

Why regsvr32 usually does not apply
regsvr32 registers DLLs that expose the registration entry points required by COM or ActiveX components. It is not a general command for making every DLL available to an application.
Do not run:
copy imagxpr5.dll C:WindowsSystem32
regsvr32 imagxpr5.dll
That procedure can produce another error, register the wrong file, or hide the real problem. A historical Nero installation report recorded a registration failure for this file, but that does not prove that registration is required.
Use regsvr32 only when the original application installer or vendor documentation explicitly instructs you to register that exact file from that exact installation directory. Even then, use the correct command prompt architecture and matching release supplied by the installer.
Recommended Free Tools
Do not download a loose DLL
Random DLL download sites are risky because the file may have:
- Malware or injected code
- The wrong application release
- The wrong language or exports
- A different architecture
- Missing companion DLLs
- No trustworthy signature or provenance
A loose replacement also leaves the damaged parent application untouched. The safe source is the original application media, the application vendor’s installer, or a supported newer release. There is no current official standalone Microsoft download for imagxpr5.dll, and the current ImagXpress product page does not publish this legacy file as a generic download.
When the old application should be replaced
Consider replacing the program when:
- Its installer no longer runs on Windows 10 or Windows 11.
- It has no security updates.
- It requires disabling antivirus or Windows security features.
- It repeatedly loses files after every repair.
- It depends on obsolete hardware or drivers.
- The vendor no longer supports the release.
If you must preserve the old program for a specific workflow, keep a verified installer and license information, back up its data, and consider running it in a controlled older Windows environment rather than weakening security on your everyday system.
FAQ
Is imagxpr5.dll a Windows file?
No evidence identifies it as a Windows-owned component. It is a third-party ImagXpress imaging DLL used by applications such as historical Nero and NeroVision releases.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Is imagxpr5.dll 32-bit or 64-bit?
Public metadata identifies it as a 32-bit Win32 DLL. A 32-bit application needs the matching 32-bit component even on 64-bit Windows.
Should I copy it to System32?
No. The application installer should place it in the location expected by the parent program. Copying it to System32 can create version conflicts and does not repair missing dependencies.
Will installing Visual C++ fix the error?
Usually not by itself. A runtime may resolve a secondary dependency, but it does not provide imagxpr5.dll. Repair or reinstall the application first.
Does regsvr32 fix this file?
Usually no. Registration applies to DLLs designed as COM or ActiveX servers. Use it only when the application’s own installer explicitly requires it.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWhy did the error start after an antivirus scan?
Antivirus software may have quarantined or deleted the file. Check Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Protection history, verify the file’s origin, and prefer reinstalling the complete application.
What if the DLL exists but Windows still says it is missing?
The actual problem may be a missing dependency, a wrong architecture, a damaged application release, insufficient permissions, or incompatibility with the current Windows version. Repair the parent program and inspect the dependency chain instead of replacing the named DLL repeatedly.
Will SFC restore imagxpr5.dll?
Normally no. SFC repairs protected Windows components, while imagxpr5.dll belongs to third-party application software. Run DISM followed by SFC only when Windows shows broader corruption symptoms.
What is the correct final fix?
Identify the program requesting the file, remove mismatched or incomplete installations, and reinstall one complete compatible release from trusted original media or the vendor. That restores the DLL together with the companion files and dependencies it was designed to use.
