synccore.dll is a legacy application DLL associated with the Windows version of America Online, published by America Online, Inc. It is not a Windows component, Microsoft Visual C++ runtime, DirectX file, .NET component, or hardware driver.
Errors may appear as:
- “This application failed to start because synccore.dll was not found.”
- “The file synccore.dll is missing or corrupted.”
- “A required component is missing: synccore.dll.”
- “Error loading synccore.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “The program can’t start because synccore.dll is missing from your computer.”
The safest fix is to repair or reinstall the AOL application that calls the file. If AOL is no longer needed, uninstall it and remove the orphaned startup entry instead. Do not download an isolated copy of synccore.dll and place it in System32 or SysWOW64.

Historical file records associate the DLL with AOL 8.x and 9.x installations. Some public records describe a 32-bit file and commonly report version 8.0.0.0, but those details come from third-party inventories rather than a current AOL binary manifest. Treat them as identification clues, not as specifications for a replacement file.

Check the complete error
Write down:
- The exact error text
- The executable named in the message
- Any folder path shown
- Whether the error appears during startup or only when launching AOL
If the message names an old AOL executable, that strongly supports an incomplete or damaged AOL installation. “The specified module could not be found” can also mean that synccore.dll exists but another dependency is missing.
Check installed applications
- Press Windows + I to open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Search for AOL or America Online.
- Open the app’s menu and choose Advanced options if available.
Desktop AOL versions may not expose modern repair controls. If there is no repair option, use the AOL installer or Control Panel entry instead.
Check startup entries
- Right-click Start and select Task Manager.
- Select Startup apps.
- Look for AOL, America Online, or an entry pointing to an old AOL folder.
- Right-click the entry and choose Open file location, if available.
Do not disable an entry solely because it contains a DLL name. First confirm that its path belongs to AOL and that the entry is actually responsible for the popup.
Recommended Free Tools
Search for the file
- Open File Explorer.
- Select This PC.
- Search for
synccore.dll. - For each result, right-click the file and select Properties.
- Check Details and Digital Signatures, if present.
A location inside an America Online installation directory is consistent with historical AOL records. A copy in C:WindowsSystem32, C:WindowsSysWOW64, a temporary folder, or an unrelated application directory deserves caution. Scan it before attempting to use it.
2. Repair the existing AOL installation
Time needed: 10–20 minutes
Use repair first when AOL is installed and you still need it. Repair restores the application’s own files and dependencies instead of replacing one DLL blindly.
- Open Settings with Windows + I.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Find the AOL application.
- Select its menu and choose Advanced options.
- Select Repair, if Windows provides that button.
- Wait for the operation to finish.
- Restart Windows.
- Launch AOL again.
Microsoft documents this repair path for applications that support it: Microsoft app repair guidance.
If Repair is unavailable, open Control Panel:
- Press Windows + R.
- Type
appwiz.cpl. - Press Enter.
- Select the AOL entry.
- Look for Repair, Change, or a similar installer option.
- Follow the AOL setup wizard.
- Restart the computer and test the application.
If repair completes but the same error returns, proceed to a clean reinstall rather than copying synccore.dll from another machine. A DLL from a different AOL release may not match the executable’s imports.
3. Reinstall AOL from an official source
Time needed: 20–40 minutes
Reinstalling the complete application is the most reliable repair when files were deleted, quarantined, or damaged.
Before uninstalling, back up any AOL data or settings that the old application stores locally.
- Open Settings → Apps → Installed apps.
- Find AOL or America Online.
- Select the menu beside it.
- Choose Uninstall.
- Complete the removal wizard.
- Restart Windows.
- Download the supported AOL product from AOL’s official account or support download route.
- Install it using an administrator account.
- Restart Windows again.
- Test the application.
Microsoft also documents the traditional route through Control Panel → Programs → Programs and Features → Uninstall: Microsoft uninstall guidance.
Current AOL Desktop Gold is a newer product. Its official installation information supports Windows 10 or newer, but it does not establish that modern Desktop Gold contains the legacy synccore.dll. If an old AOL 8.x or 9.x installer is no longer available from AOL, do not obtain the DLL from an unofficial download page. The safe conclusion may be that the obsolete application cannot be restored safely on the current system.
How to tell whether reinstalling worked
The repair succeeded when:
- The AOL executable opens without the missing-file message.
- The old startup popup no longer appears.
- A new
synccore.dllappears inside the AOL program directory, if that product uses it. - No copy needs to be placed in a Windows system folder.
If the error continues immediately after reinstalling, capture the executable path again. You may be dealing with an orphaned startup task or a different application that happens to request the same filename.
4. Check antivirus quarantine before restoring anything
Time needed: 5–15 minutes
An antivirus product may have quarantined the DLL because the old AOL installation is obsolete, damaged, or behaving unexpectedly.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Search for
synccore.dllor the AOL executable. - Review the detected file’s location and detection name.
Restore a quarantined file only when all of the following are true:
- It came from a verified AOL installation directory.
- The surrounding AOL executable is trusted.
- The detection is clearly a false positive.
- A current security scan does not find related threats.
Do not add an unknown DLL to an exclusion list merely because its filename matches the error. If the file was removed, reinstall AOL from its official source and run a full scan.
To run a scan:
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Scan options.
- Choose Full scan.
- Select Scan now.
If the file is found in a temporary or unrelated folder, leave it quarantined while investigating.
5. Remove an obsolete AOL startup reference
Time needed: 5–15 minutes
Use this fix when AOL has already been removed but Windows still tries to launch an old AOL component.
Remove the Startup apps entry
- Right-click Start.
- Select Task Manager.
- Open Startup apps.
- Select the AOL entry.
- Choose Disable if you want to confirm that it causes the popup.
- Restart Windows.
If the error disappears, right-click the entry again and choose Disable, or remove the application properly if Windows offers that option.
Check Task Scheduler
- Press Windows + R.
- Type
taskschd.msc. - Press Enter.
- Select Task Scheduler Library.
- Review tasks mentioning AOL or America Online.
- Open a suspicious task’s Actions tab.
- Confirm that it points to a missing AOL executable or folder.
- Right-click only that confirmed orphaned task and choose Delete.
Do not delete tasks based on a name alone. Verify the action path first.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Check startup folders
- Press Windows + R.
- Enter
shell:startup. - Press Enter.
- Remove only a shortcut that clearly launches an uninstalled AOL program.
- Repeat with
shell:common startup.
Avoid deleting arbitrary registry values. A leftover reference can usually be disabled or removed through Task Manager, Task Scheduler, the startup folders, or the AOL uninstaller.
6. Do not copy the DLL or run regsvr32 as a generic fix
Time needed: 2 minutes
synccore.dll was normally an application-private file installed beside the AOL program that used it. Windows searches the application’s folder during ordinary DLL resolution, so putting a copy in System32 or SysWOW64 is not the correct default repair. Microsoft explains the search behavior here: DLL search order in Windows.

Manual copying can:
- Install the wrong AOL release.
- Mix 32-bit and 64-bit components.
- Create a new dependency error.
- Cause version conflicts.
- Increase DLL hijacking risk.
- Hide the real problem in the AOL installation.
regsvr32 is also usually irrelevant. It registers DLLs that provide the required registration entry points; it does not restore missing application dependencies. Microsoft’s documentation describes its specific registration syntax and purpose: regsvr32 command reference.
Run it only when an application vendor explicitly instructs you to register that particular DLL. There is no evidence here that legacy AOL requires synccore.dll to be registered.
7. Check 32-bit and 64-bit compatibility
Time needed: 5 minutes
Historical listings describe synccore.dll as a 32-bit AOL file. A 64-bit edition of Windows can run a 32-bit AOL application, but the DLL must match the application that loads it.
Do not assume that:
- A file labelled 64-bit is correct.
- A DLL from AOL 8.x works with AOL 9.x.
- A file with the same name has the same exports or dependencies.
System32is the correct destination on 64-bit Windows.
The correct location is normally the AOL program directory, and the correct copy is the one supplied with the matching AOL installation. Conflicting public records about version, size, architecture, or checksums are why those values should not be used as replacement criteria.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.8. Repair Windows components only when other symptoms exist
Time needed: 15–30 minutes
SFC and DISM are not the primary fix for synccore.dll. This file belongs to AOL, not to protected Windows system files. Use these commands when Windows has several unrelated missing-file errors, failed system components, or broader integrity problems.
- Open Start.
- Type
cmd. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for DISM to finish.
- Run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Test AOL again.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before System File Checker: Microsoft DISM and SFC instructions.

Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallIf both commands complete without resolving the AOL error, stop repeating them. They cannot recreate an application DLL that was removed from an AOL installation.
Running these commands manually means waiting through scans and interpreting whether Windows found and repaired anything. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for broader Windows problems and show what it identifies; repairs are performed by the full version, and reinstalling AOL remains the definitive fix when the missing file belongs to AOL.
9. Driver and Windows Features checks are usually not relevant
Time needed: 5–10 minutes
Nothing in the available evidence identifies synccore.dll as a driver or Windows optional feature. Do not install a driver or enable a Windows feature merely because the filename ends in .dll.
Check Device Manager only for broader hardware symptoms
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Look for a yellow warning icon.
- Expand categories related to any device that is also malfunctioning.
- Right-click the affected device and select Update driver.
This is relevant only if you have an independent device problem. It will not normally restore an AOL application DLL.
If several devices show stale or missing drivers, manually identifying the correct manufacturer packages can take time and may require checking each hardware model. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify driver problems; installation is handled by the full version, but updating drivers is not the definitive repair for an AOL-owned synccore.dll.
Likewise, installing Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET is not a supported solution for this filename unless the complete error separately names a missing runtime component.
10. Use System Restore only after a clear system change
Time needed: 20–45 minutes
System Restore may help if the error began immediately after a failed update, cleanup operation, or application change and a restore point exists.
- Open Start.
- Search for Create a restore point.
- Open it.
- Select System Restore.
- Choose a restore point from before the failure.
- Review the affected programs.
- Start the restore and allow Windows to restart.
System Restore rolls back system files and settings without normally removing personal files. It is not a substitute for reinstalling AOL and may not restore application data. See Microsoft’s Windows recovery options.

FAQ
Is synccore.dll part of Windows?
No. It is associated with historical Windows versions of America Online. It should not normally be placed in System32 or SysWOW64.
Which AOL version used synccore.dll?
Public historical records associate it with AOL 8.x and 9.x installations, including paths under America Online 9.0a and 9.0b. They do not prove that every AOL release used the same build.
Is synccore.dll 32-bit or 64-bit?
Historical records describe it as 32-bit. The DLL must match the AOL executable that loads it, regardless of whether Windows itself is 32-bit or 64-bit.
Should I download synccore.dll separately?
Generally no. There is no verified official standalone download package identified here. Random DLL sites may provide malware, the wrong version, or the wrong architecture, and an isolated file may not include its dependencies.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Will installing Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET fix it?
There is no reliable evidence connecting this filename to those runtimes. Install them only when the complete error identifies a separate missing runtime file.
Does regsvr32 fix synccore.dll?
Usually not. An application-private helper DLL normally does not need registration. Use regsvr32 only when the application’s documentation specifically requires it.
What if the error says settingsynccore.dll?
That is a different filename. Do not substitute synccore.dll for settingsynccore.dll; investigate the separate Windows settings or startup problem named in that error. Microsoft has a distinct example involving that filename: Microsoft Q&A.
What if I no longer use AOL?
Uninstall AOL through Windows Settings or Control Panel, restart, and remove only confirmed orphaned AOL entries from Startup apps, Task Scheduler, or the startup folders. Once the caller is gone, the missing DLL popup should stop.
