What is imesearchdll.dll?
Microsoft documentation lists imesearchdll.dll among the files used by Pinyin IME 2010, alongside imesearch.exe. The documented package included separate 32-bit and 64-bit files and identified version 14.0.7162.5000 for that historical IME component.

First, identify where the error occurs
Common messages include:
- “The program can’t start because imesearchdll.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “imesearchdll.dll was not found.”
- “The code execution cannot proceed because imesearchdll.dll was not found.”
- “imesearchdll.dll could not be loaded.”
- “The specified module could not be found.”
- “imesearchdll.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
- “There was a problem starting imesearchdll.dll.”
- “Cannot register imesearchdll.dll.”
The wording does not prove that this DLL itself is the root cause. “The specified module could not be found” can mean that a dependency required by the DLL is missing. “Not designed to run on Windows” commonly points to corruption, an invalid replacement, or incompatible architecture.

Use the location of the failure to choose the repair path:
- Windows startup, language switching, or several applications: repair Windows components first.
- Office or an older Pinyin-related component: repair the relevant IME or Microsoft product.
- One game or application only: repair or reinstall that application.
- After antivirus activity: check Protection history before restoring anything.
- After an update or language-pack change: install pending updates, then consider System Restore if the problem began immediately afterward.
Fix 1: Install Windows updates
Incomplete servicing can leave an IME component damaged or unavailable. Start with Windows Update before replacing anything manually.
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Click Check for updates.
- Install all available updates.
- Restart Windows, even if it does not immediately request a restart.
- Repeat the check until Windows reports that the system is up to date.
- Try the action that produced the error.
If the error disappears after restarting, the component was probably restored or its servicing state was corrected. If it remains, continue with DISM and SFC.
Windows 10 reached end of support on October 14, 2025. On an unsupported Windows 10 installation, updating may not provide the same repair path available on a supported Windows 11 system.
Fix 2: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC
Use these commands when the error appears system-wide, during Windows startup, while switching input languages, or in multiple applications.
Run DISM
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish. This can take some time.
- Keep the administrator Command Prompt open.
DISM repairs the Windows component store, which SFC uses as a source for protected system files.
Run System File Checker
After DISM completes, run:
sfc /scannow
Wait until verification reaches 100 percent. Then restart Windows and test the affected program or input method.
Success normally means that the error no longer appears. If SFC reports that it found corrupt files and repaired them, restart before testing. If it found corrupt files but could not repair some of them, run DISM again or provide a matching Windows installation source, then run SFC again.
If DISM cannot obtain repair files from Windows Update, Microsoft supports using a matching installation source with /Source and /LimitAccess. The source must closely match the installed Windows version. Do not point DISM at an arbitrary ISO or copied system folder.
Repeating SFC without knowing whether the component store changed can be frustrating. Outbyte PC Repair can scan and show what it identifies, while the repair is performed by the full version; it is optional, and DISM and SFC remain the built-in repair path.
Fix 3: Repair the application that shows the error
If Windows works normally and only one application reports imesearchdll.dll, the application is the first thing to repair. The DLL may belong to an old bundled IME or installer rather than the active Windows installation.
Use the application’s repair option
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Apps > Installed apps.
- Find the affected application.
- Select its More button.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair.
- Restart the application and test it.
Some desktop programs provide repair options in Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features:
- Select the application.
- Click Change or Repair.
- Follow the installer prompts.
- Restart Windows if requested.
For a game, use its official launcher’s Verify, Repair, or equivalent option. If verification does not restore the component, uninstall the application, restart, and reinstall it using the developer’s official installer or launcher.
Do not copy a DLL from another computer into the application folder. The application may require a particular architecture or a matching set of files.
Fix 4: Repair Microsoft Pinyin or an older Office IME
The file has a documented historical connection to Microsoft Pinyin IME 2010. If the error appears when typing Chinese, switching input languages, starting Office, or using an older Microsoft component, repair the owning IME or product.
- Open Settings > Time & language.
- Select Language & region.
- Select the affected language.
- Open its language options.
- Review the installed keyboard and language features.
- Remove the affected keyboard or language feature only if you have its official installation source available.
- Restart Windows.
- Add the language and keyboard again from Windows Settings.
For an older Office IME or Office installation, use the original Microsoft-supported installer or the Office maintenance option rather than downloading the DLL separately. Microsoft’s historical Pinyin documentation shows that the component had separate x86 and x64 files, so an installer must provide the correct architecture.
Recommended Free Tools
If the problem started after removing Office, a language pack, or an older input component, reinstalling that component may be necessary. Windows repair commands will not always restore a separately installed legacy IME.
Fix 5: Check Windows Security quarantine
Defender or another security product may have quarantined the file. Do not restore it solely because the filename looks familiar.

A file in a temporary folder, download directory, user profile, or unexpected application folder deserves additional scrutiny. If the file repeatedly returns after repair, inspect the process or startup item creating it and run a malware scan.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Fix 6: Check architecture and the file path
On 64-bit Windows, 32-bit and 64-bit applications may require different IME binaries. Microsoft’s IME guidance also notes that a 64-bit application cannot load a 32-bit text service.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsTo inspect a file without replacing it:
- Right-click the file in File Explorer.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Digital Signatures tab, if present.
- Select the signature and choose Details.
- Confirm that Windows reports a valid Microsoft signature.
- Open the General and Details tabs to review the location and metadata.
There is no single path that is guaranteed for every Windows release or IME package. A path under a Windows IME directory may be expected, while a copy in a random application or temporary folder may belong to that application or may be unauthorized.
If a 32-bit application fails on 64-bit Windows, reinstall the application and its IME component rather than copying a 32-bit file into System32. Do not put a 64-bit file into SysWOW64 based only on its name.
Fix 7: Update or reinstall related drivers only when the error identifies one
imesearchdll.dll is an IME component, not normally a hardware driver. Device Manager is relevant only if the same incident also identifies a keyboard, touchpad, chipset, or other input-device driver.
- Right-click Start and open Device Manager.
- Expand the relevant category, such as Keyboards or Human Interface Devices.
- Right-click the affected device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows.
If the issue began after a driver update, open the device’s Properties, select the Driver tab, and use Roll Back Driver when available. Otherwise, obtain the driver from the computer or device manufacturer.
Driver updates will not repair a missing IME DLL unless the error also points to a driver problem. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers and identify what it finds, while driver installation is performed by the full version; it is optional and not a substitute for repairing the owning IME or application.
Fix 8: Use System Restore after a recent change
System Restore is appropriate when the error began immediately after an update, language-pack change, application removal, or other system change.
- Press Win + R.
- Type:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point created before the error began.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Confirm the restore point and select Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart.
System Restore does not normally remove personal documents, but it can undo programs, drivers, updates, and configuration changes installed after the selected point. If Windows cannot start normally, open Windows Recovery Environment and use System Restore or Uninstall Updates.
What not to do
Do not download the DLL from a DLL website
A downloaded copy may contain malware, use the wrong version, have the wrong architecture, or fail because another dependency is missing. It can also overwrite a valid Microsoft file and make later servicing more difficult.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Use Windows Update, DISM, SFC, the original Microsoft IME or Office installer, or the affected application’s official installer instead.
Do not use regsvr32 as a general fix
regsvr32 registers DLLs that provide registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. It does not restore a missing file or repair an ordinary IME module.
If you run:
regsvr32 imesearchdll.dll
and Windows reports that DllRegisterServer is missing, that is evidence that registration is not the remedy. Repair the owning component instead.
Do not install unrelated runtimes
Installing Visual C++ Redistributable, DirectX, or .NET solely because imesearchdll.dll is missing has no verified basis. If the error names another DLL, diagnose that dependency separately.

Is imesearchdll.dll a Windows file?
It is associated with Microsoft IME technology, and Microsoft documentation lists it in the historical Pinyin IME 2010 file set. Not every current Windows installation is expected to contain this exact filename.
Is it part of Microsoft Pinyin or Office IME 2010?
It is documented as part of Pinyin IME 2010. An older Office IME or application may also depend on a related component. The exact owner depends on where the error occurs and which package is installed.
What does “module could not be found” mean?
It can mean that imesearchdll.dll is missing, but it can also mean that a dependency required by the DLL is missing. Repairing the owning package is safer than copying the named file.
Should I copy it to System32 or SysWOW64?
No. Those folders serve different architectures, and the correct IME location varies by Windows version and package. Reinstall the component that owns the file.
What if the message says the file is not designed to run on Windows?
Treat that as possible corruption, an architecture mismatch, or an invalid replacement. Remove any manually copied version, run DISM and SFC, and reinstall the owning application or IME from an official source.
What if none of these fixes works?
Record the exact error, the application name, the file path, and when the problem began. Then use matching Windows repair media or an in-place Windows repair. If the file keeps reappearing in an unexpected location, investigate startup entries, scheduled tasks, disk health, and malware before restoring it again.
