- Which program shows the error? Check the window title, shortcut target, or the full error dialog.
- When did it start? Common triggers include reinstalling Windows, updating a scanner driver, removing old software, running antivirus cleanup, or restoring an old application.
- Is the program 32-bit on 64-bit Windows?
imgtable.dllis associated with older 32-bit scanner software, so the application’s architecture matters more than the architecture of Windows itself.
imgtable.dll is a real file, but it is not a normal Windows component. The strongest documented association is with old MiraScan packages used by BenQ and Acer scanners. If an application reports that imgtable.dll is missing, the safest fix is usually to repair or reinstall the complete scanner application that originally installed it.
Do not begin by downloading a loose DLL and copying it into System32. That can introduce malware, install the wrong build, or leave the program without the companion files and driver registration it also needs.
What is imgtable.dll?
imgtable.dll is described as ImgTable DLL, part of ImgTable Dynamic Link Library, with third-party metadata identifying Image Table as the developer. It is an application file, not a Microsoft Windows system DLL.

Archived MiraScan scanner packages place IMGTABLE.DLL inside a package SYSTEM directory alongside scanner components such as:
ScanCtlS.dllImgProcS.dll- TWAIN files
- Scanner-specific driver files
- Configuration and control components
This explains why replacing only imgtable.dll often does not solve the problem. The application may also need its image-processing library, TWAIN interface, service, configuration files, and device driver.
The file is not established as:
- A Windows operating-system file
- A Visual C++ Redistributable file
- A DirectX component
- A generic gaming runtime
- A standalone scanner driver that can be safely installed by itself
The filename alone cannot identify the exact application on your computer. MiraScan was used with several older BenQ and Acer scanner families, and other software may have bundled or called the same library.
Fix 1: Identify and reinstall the parent scanner software
This is the fastest and most reliable repair when the error names imgtable.dll.

Find the program that needs the file
- Reproduce the error and read the full dialog.
- Check the title bar for the application name.
- Right-click the shortcut that launches the failing program.
- Select Properties.
- On the Shortcut tab, inspect Target and Start in.
- Note the application folder and executable name.
- Open Settings with
Win + I. - Select Apps, then Installed apps.
- Search for MiraScan, BenQ, Acer, scanner, or the application named in the error.
- Expand the scanner entry and note its exact name.
If the error appears when scanning from another program, such as an image editor, accounting application, or document utility, inspect its scanner settings. The parent program may be calling an old TWAIN driver even though the error appears under a different application name.
Identify the scanner model
Check the label on the scanner, its original box, or Device Manager:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Imaging devices, Cameras, and Universal Serial Bus controllers.
- Look for the scanner name or an entry with a warning icon.
- Right-click the likely device and select Properties.
- Open the Details tab.
- Set Property to Hardware Ids.
- Record the model and hardware identifiers before removing anything.
Do not uninstall a device until you know which entry belongs to the scanner.
Reinstall the complete package
Use the scanner’s original installation media or the manufacturer’s support page for the exact model. Do not choose a similar model merely because its name looks close.

- Disconnect the scanner’s USB cable.
- Open Settings → Apps → Installed apps.
- Uninstall MiraScan and any matching scanner utility.
- Restart Windows.
- Run the manufacturer’s complete installer.
- If the installer has a compatibility warning, do not ignore it automatically.
- Restart again when installation finishes.
- Reconnect the scanner only when the installer requests it.
- Open the scanner application and perform a preview scan.
A successful repair normally restores more than imgtable.dll. The scanner utility should open without the missing-file message, detect the device, and complete a preview or test scan.
If the installer refuses to run, right-click it, select Properties, open Compatibility, and use Run this program in compatibility mode only if the manufacturer’s documentation identifies an older Windows version. Also select Run this program as an administrator for the installer, not permanently for every application unless necessary.

Fix 2: Check whether antivirus quarantined the file
Old scanner DLLs can be flagged because they are uncommon, unsigned, packed with legacy installers, or bundled with outdated setup technology. An old file is not automatically safe, and an antivirus detection is not automatically a false positive.
Check Windows Security Protection history
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent detections.
- Expand any item that mentions
imgtable.dll, MiraScan, BenQ, Acer, or the scanner installation directory. - Check the detected file path.
- Confirm that the path belongs to the scanner’s legitimate installation folder.
- Scan the original installer and the extracted installation folder before restoring anything.
Restore the file only when you can verify its source and security status. If Windows Security identifies the file as malware, leave it quarantined and obtain a clean, supported installer instead.

If restoring the file makes the error disappear but the scanner still fails, the installation is probably incomplete. Reinstall the complete package rather than continuing to restore individual files.
Fix 3: Resolve the 32-bit versus 64-bit compatibility problem
Many older scanner packages were built for 32-bit Windows applications. A 32-bit application can run on 64-bit Windows through Windows’ compatibility layers, but its DLL must be loaded by the correct application and installed in the application’s own location.
This does not mean that copying a 32-bit DLL into C:WindowsSystem32 is the answer. On 64-bit Windows, System32 is primarily associated with 64-bit system components, while 32-bit applications commonly use their own program directory and Windows’ 32-bit redirection mechanisms.
Check the application architecture
- Press
Ctrl + Shift + Escto open Task Manager. - Start the program that reports the error.
- Select Details.
- Right-click a column heading and choose Select columns if needed.
- Look for architecture information where Windows provides it.
- Compare the program with the scanner package supplied by the manufacturer.
The important match is:
- 32-bit application with its 32-bit scanner components
- 64-bit application with a compatible 64-bit scanner interface, if one exists
Installing a 64-bit package into a 32-bit application will not make the application load a 32-bit imgtable.dll. Conversely, an old 32-bit TWAIN component may not be visible to a modern 64-bit scanning application.

- Right-click Start and select Device Manager.
- Expand the scanner-related category.
- Look for a yellow warning icon or an unknown device.
- Right-click the device and select Properties.
- Read the message under Device status.
- Open the Driver tab and note the provider and date.
- Select Uninstall device only if you are reinstalling the full, model-specific package.
- Restart Windows.
- Install the correct driver package and reconnect the scanner when prompted.
For old hardware, the real problem may be an unsigned driver, obsolete TWAIN component, unsupported USB behavior, or a setup program that cannot run on current Windows. A missing DLL message can be only the first visible symptom.

Fix 4: Repair the application installation instead of copying the DLL
If the program is still listed under Installed apps, use its repair option before removing it completely.
- Open Settings → Apps → Installed apps.
- Find the scanner utility or application that displays the error.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Choose Advanced options if available.
- Select Repair.
- Start the application again.
- If the error remains, return to the same screen and choose Reset only if you understand that application settings may be removed.
Some older desktop programs do not provide Repair or Reset. In that case:

- Restart Windows.
- Remove only the remaining application folder if the uninstaller left it behind.
- Install again from trusted original media or the manufacturer’s model-specific package.
- Run a test scan.
Do not copy imgtable.dll from another computer unless both systems have the same application, same scanner package, same architecture, and a verified installation source. Even then, transplanting one file can hide missing dependencies rather than repair the installation.

Fix 5: Check for a missing dependency
The message “Error loading imgtable.dll. The specified module could not be found” does not always mean that imgtable.dll itself is absent. Windows may have found the named DLL but failed to load one of its dependencies.
This is especially common with old scanner software that expects companion DLLs, legacy TWAIN files, or an application-specific runtime.
Check the application directory for the complete group of files installed by the scanner package. Do not download individual dependencies from random DLL sites. Instead, reinstall the complete package so Windows receives the matching files and configuration.
If the application documentation explicitly requires a Microsoft runtime, install that runtime from Microsoft. Microsoft provides separate x86, x64, and ARM64 Visual C++ packages, but there is no evidence that imgtable.dll itself is a Visual C++ runtime DLL. Installing Visual C++ is therefore conditional, not the default repair.
Fix 6: Use Windows repair commands for broader corruption
Because imgtable.dll is associated with third-party scanner software, Windows repair commands are secondary. They are useful when the missing-file error appeared with other damaged Windows features, failed updates, unstable system files, or multiple unrelated applications.
Run both commands from an elevated Command Prompt, with DISM first.
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the scanner application again.
DISM repairs the Windows component store. System File Checker then checks protected Windows files against that repaired store. Neither command is expected to recreate a third-party scanner DLL, but they can correct Windows damage that prevents installers, services, or device components from working.
If the commands report that repairs could not be completed, install pending Windows updates, restart, and run the sequence again. If only imgtable.dll remains missing, return to the scanner package rather than repeatedly running SFC.
Repeatedly hunting through Windows repair logs and rerunning SFC or DISM without knowing what changed can waste time. Fix 7: Check Windows Features only when the installer requires them
Windows Features are not a normal source of imgtable.dll, and enabling random features will not replace it. Check them only if the scanner installer specifically reports a missing Windows component.
- Press
Win + R. - Type:
optionalfeatures
- Press Enter.
- Review .NET Framework 3.5 and any other feature named by the installer.
- Enable only the required feature.
- Select OK.
- Restart Windows if prompted.
- Run the scanner installer again.
On some systems, an old application may mention legacy components or compatibility support. Follow the installer’s exact requirement rather than enabling every available option. Windows Features can satisfy a prerequisite, but they do not prove that the old scanner itself is supported on Windows 10 or Windows 11.

Fix 8: Use System Restore after a recent change
System Restore is useful when imgtable.dll worked before a driver update, cleanup operation, failed uninstall, or other recent system change.
- Press
Win + R. - Type:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point from before the error began.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Review the programs and drivers that may be changed.
- Select Close, then Next.
- Select Finish and allow Windows to restart.
System Restore does not replace personal documents, but it can roll back applications, drivers, and system settings. Afterward, test the scanner before reinstalling updates or utilities that may have triggered the problem.

regsvr32 is not a universal DLL repair command. It is intended for DLLs that provide registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer.
A legacy image-processing or scanner library may not support self-registration. Running:

can produce another error, change nothing, or create the false impression that the installation is repaired.
Use regsvr32 only when the scanner manufacturer’s documentation explicitly instructs you to register that exact file. If documentation does require it, open an elevated Command Prompt, change to the directory containing the correct DLL, and follow the documented 32-bit or 64-bit regsvr32 path. Do not guess based on the filename.
What the common messages mean
“This application failed to start because imgtable.dll was not found”
The application requested the DLL and Windows could not locate it in the expected search locations. An incomplete installation, quarantine event, or moved application folder is likely.
“The program can’t start because imgtable.dll is missing from your computer”
This is commonly reported loader wording. It identifies the file Windows expected, but it does not prove which program originally installed it. Identify the parent application before repairing anything.
“Error loading imgtable.dll. The specified module could not be found”
The named file may be missing, or a dependency required by that file may be missing. Reinstall the complete scanner package rather than replacing only the named DLL.
“A required component is missing: imgtable.dll”
The application is declaring a required component during startup. Check the application’s installation directory, scanner package, and antivirus Protection history.

“The file imgtable.dll is missing or corrupted”
The file may have been deleted, quarantined, damaged, or replaced by an incompatible build. Use the original installer and verify the file’s source.
If the error appears at every boot
If no scanner application is being used, the message may come from a stale startup entry or scheduled task left behind by an incomplete uninstall.

- Disable entries associated with MiraScan, BenQ, Acer, or the old scanner utility.
- Open Task Manager with
Ctrl + Shift + Esc. - Select Startup apps.
- Disable the same obsolete entry if it appears there.
- Check Installed apps and uninstall the unused scanner software.
- Restart Windows.
Do not disable unknown security software or Windows entries solely because their names are unfamiliar. If the startup item cannot be identified, note its file path and investigate the parent application before removing it.
FAQ
Is imgtable.dll a Windows system file?
No reliable evidence places it among normal Windows operating-system files. It is associated with third-party scanner software, particularly older MiraScan packages.
Is imgtable.dll malware?
The filename alone cannot establish that. It may be a legitimate old scanner component, but antivirus detections must be investigated by checking the file path, installer source, and scan results. Do not restore a quarantined file merely because the application requests it.
Should I download imgtable.dll from a DLL website?
No. A downloaded copy may contain malware, use the wrong architecture, have incompatible exports, or omit the companion files the scanner needs. Use the original installation media or the manufacturer’s exact scanner package.

Should I copy it to System32?
No. System32 is not a universal DLL drop location, and a 32-bit scanner application normally expects its components in its own installation structure.
Is imgtable.dll part of Visual C++ or DirectX?
There is no verified evidence that it is. Install Visual C++ or another runtime only when the parent application specifically requires it or reports a separate runtime error.
Will SFC repair it?
Usually not. SFC repairs protected Windows components. It is appropriate for broader Windows corruption, but a missing MiraScan DLL normally requires repairing or reinstalling the scanner software.
Does this mean my scanner is unsupported?
Possibly. Old scanner packages may depend on obsolete drivers, 16-bit setup components, unsigned drivers, or legacy TWAIN software. Check support for the exact model and Windows version. If the manufacturer provides no compatible package, use a supported TWAIN alternative, a newer scanner, or an isolated legacy Windows environment.
What is the correct permanent fix?
Identify the program and scanner model, then reinstall the complete model-specific scanner package. That restores imgtable.dll together with the related image-processing, TWAIN, configuration, and driver components instead of treating one missing filename as an isolated Windows problem.
