They represent multidirectional shooters, maze action and platform-puzzle play. The list also includes Bounty Bob Strikes Back! and Frenzy, two homebrew-community-developed games now listed as official Atari releases. These are useful picks across different styles, not an objective ranking: the available sources provide a collector checklist and community ratings, not controlled reviews.
What makes these Atari 7800 homebrew games stand out?
The Atari 7800 homebrew scene spans more than arcade recreations. This shortlist includes fast, directional shooting, maze navigation and original platform-puzzle play. Some titles also illustrate how a game’s status can change: a community-developed game may later receive an official Atari cartridge edition.

Asteroids Deluxe: a homebrew with a later official edition
Asteroids Deluxe is a natural pick for players who want arcade-style multidirectional shooting. Atari Compendium distinguishes a 2007 homebrew entry from a separate Atari Interactive release in 2025, while Atari’s current catalog lists a physical 7800 cartridge. Atari describes the game as developed by a member of its homebrew community and presented as an official Atari release. That makes it more precise to call the current cartridge an official edition of a homebrew-origin game, rather than an original independent homebrew cartridge. Atari Compendium and Atari’s cartridge catalog provide the release and listing context.
Space Duel: another multidirectional shooter
Space Duel gives shooter fans another arcade-style option. The Atari 7800 Forever physical-cartridge checklist classifies it as a multidirectional shooter and identifies it as both a homebrew and an official Atari 7800+ release. The checklist is a collector reference, so its classification helps identify the kind of game and edition, but does not establish a critical verdict. See the Atari 7800 Forever checklist.
#1 Best Overall
- TIMELESS ‘80s DESIGN. The 7800 console takes its place among other ‘80s design icons like shoulder pads, crop tops, and aviator sunglasses.
- ATARI+ PLATFORM. Atari+ Platform games and accessories are backward and forward compatible. Consoles, accessories, and games work together and are also compatible with most original accessories and cartridges.
- ARE YOU POWER-READY? Includes a USB-C power cable but does not come with a wall charging plug for your outlet. You’ll need to pick up a 1A USB power adapter if you don’t have an extra one at home.
- Includes Bentley Bear’s Crystal Quest Cartridge - In this brand-new sequel to Crystal Castles, you’ll find power-ups, hidden paths, a challenging variety of enemies…and one adorable bear. Everything a platforming fan could possibly want.
- 2 Systems in 1 - Plays both Atari 2600 and 7800 game cartridges. HDMI-Ready - Connect to any screen via HDMI so you can enjoy every last pixel.
Pac-Man Collection: maze action
For a change of pace from shooters, Pac-Man Collection is listed as a homebrew maze game in the same checklist. It carries a 5.0 community rating there; that number is the checklist’s game-level rating, not a critic score, sales measure or controlled playtest result. Do not confuse this homebrew collection with Atari’s official PAC-MAN: Double Feature cartridge, which contains PAC-MAN 7800 and PAC-MAN 2600. The checklist and Atari’s product page distinguish the releases.
Rikki & Vikki: platforming with puzzle elements
Rikki & Vikki is the choice here for players interested in a platformer-puzzle hybrid rather than a direct arcade-style shooter or maze game. The collector checklist classifies it as a platformer/puzzle homebrew and gives it a 5.0 community rating, with the same caveat that this is not an independent review score. A separate Atari 7800 game list credits PenguiNet and records 2019 for the game. The checklist and the Atari 7800 game list provide those details.
Bounty Bob Strikes Back! and Frenzy: community-developed, officially released
Atari explicitly describes Bounty Bob Strikes Back! and Frenzy as games developed by members of its homebrew community and lists official Atari releases. Atari’s Frenzy product page specifies one- or two-player modes and describes what is included with that product; those details apply to the listed edition, not automatically to every version of the game. For readers choosing by player count, it is the clearest documented option in this shortlist. Atari’s 7800 catalog links to the current official listings.

What “homebrew” means for current cartridges
Homebrew can refer to who developed a game, how it was first distributed, or both. Those meanings do not always describe the same edition. Atari says Bounty Bob Strikes Back!, Asteroids Deluxe and Frenzy were developed by homebrew-community members and are receiving official Atari releases. For Asteroids Deluxe, Atari Compendium separately records the 2007 homebrew entry and a 2025 Atari Interactive release. A currently listed Atari cartridge is therefore an official edition, even when the game has a homebrew origin.

The 5.0 figures attached to Pac-Man Collection and Rikki & Vikki are community ratings on the Atari 7800 Forever checklist. They should not be read as critic reviews, sales data or results from a consistent playtest method. The available sources do not establish a statistically representative popularity measure or an objective ranking of the Atari 7800 homebrew library. The shortlist is best used as a way to choose by genre, documented player mode and release history.
