in_ape.dll is a historical 32-bit Monkey’s Audio input plug-in used by older Winamp-compatible players, including some MediaMonkey installations. If Windows reports that in_ape.dll is missing or cannot be loaded, repair or reinstall the application that requested it instead of downloading a replacement DLL into a Windows system folder.
What this file actually does
The internal name of in_ape.dll is in_APE. It provides APE audio input or playback support for legacy Windows applications that use Winamp-style plug-ins.

This is an application plug-in, not a Windows component. It is not part of:
- Windows 10 or Windows 11
- Microsoft Visual C++
- DirectX
- .NET
- A printer or other hardware driver
- A DLL that should normally be registered globally
Older installations commonly stored it in the player’s Plugins directory, beside other input plug-ins. The correct location depends on the host application. A 32-bit plug-in also requires a compatible 32-bit host that supports this plug-in format. A 64-bit-only player cannot load it simply because the file exists on the computer.

Current Monkey’s Audio installers should not automatically be assumed to contain this historical plug-in. Modern software may use a native decoder or a different library. Reinstalling the current Monkey’s Audio package is therefore not guaranteed to restore in_ape.dll for an old Winamp or MediaMonkey installation.

Fix 1: Identify and repair the application that needs the file
Start with the exact program named in the error. Do not begin by searching the web for in_ape.dll.
Repair through Windows Settings
- Press Windows + I to open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Search for the affected player, such as an older MediaMonkey installation.
- Select the three-dot menu beside the program.
- Choose Advanced options if it is available.
- Select Repair.
- Restart Windows.
- Open the player and test an APE file.
The Repair option preserves the application in many cases while restoring missing program files. If the application opens and APE playback works, the repair succeeded.

If there is no Repair option, continue with a traditional desktop repair or a full reinstall.
Repair through Control Panel
- Press Windows + R.
- Type
appwiz.cpl. - Press Enter.
- Find the player in Programs and Features.
- Right-click it.
- Choose Repair, Change, or Modify, depending on what the installer provides.
- Complete the wizard.
- Restart the computer and test the application.
If the repair wizard reports that source files are unavailable, use the original installer or download the installer from the software publisher’s official website. Back up playlists, skins, profiles, and settings before uninstalling.
Reinstall when repair does not work
- Close the affected player.
- Back up playlists and any application data you need.
- Open Settings → Apps → Installed apps.
- Remove the affected application.
- Restart Windows.
- Install the correct version from the publisher’s official installer or trusted original installation media.
- Launch the player once.
- Rescan the music library and test an APE file.
Reinstalling the complete application is safer than copying only in_ape.dll. The plug-in may depend on a matching host interface, configuration file, or companion library.
Fix 2: Check the application’s plug-in folder
If the player still opens but reports that the file is missing, inspect its installation directory.
Common locations for older applications include:
C:Program Files<Application>Plugins
C:Program Files (x86)<Application>Plugins
The exact folder depends on where the application was installed.

- Right-click the player’s shortcut.
- Select Properties.
- Select Open File Location.
- Look for a folder named
Plugins,plugin, or a similar application-specific directory. - Check whether
in_ape.dllis present. - If the application has a plug-in manager, open it and look for an APE or Monkey’s Audio input plug-in.
- Use Rescan, Refresh, or Verify files if the application provides that option.
- Restart the player.
Do not copy the file into C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64. Those folders are not general-purpose storage locations for application plug-ins. Copying a 32-bit audio plug-in there will not make a 64-bit host load it and can make later troubleshooting harder.
Manual copying is appropriate only when all of the following are true:
- The file came from the same trusted application version.
- You have a known-good backup or original installer.
- The application’s documentation identifies the correct plug-in folder.
- The host is compatible with the plug-in.
After copying, restart the application and test the feature that previously failed. If the same error changes to an entry-point or initialization error, remove the copied file and reinstall the complete application package.
Fix 3: Check Microsoft Defender quarantine
Security software can remove or quarantine a plug-in after an update or scan. Do not restore the file automatically. First establish where it came from.
- Open the Start menu.
- Type Windows Security.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review entries from the time the error began.
- Expand any entry referring to the player or
in_ape.dll. - Check the detected file path and detection name.
Restore the file only when it came from a trusted, verifiable application installer or backup and you have confirmed that the detection is a false positive. If the source is unknown, leave it quarantined and reinstall the player instead.
If the file repeatedly reappears and disappears, run a full scan:
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Scan options.
- Choose Full scan.
- Select Scan now.
For a persistent problem, use Microsoft Defender Offline scan from the same screen. Repeatedly restoring a DLL without investigating its source is not a safe repair method.
Fix 4: Confirm 32-bit and 64-bit compatibility
Historical evidence identifies this plug-in as a 32-bit PE32 DLL. That matters even on a 64-bit version of Windows.

Check the host application rather than relying on the Windows edition:
- Open Settings → Apps → Installed apps.
- Find the player.
- Note whether its name or installation path indicates a 32-bit version.
- Check the application’s About or Help screen for architecture information.
- Look in
C:Program Files (x86)for a typical 32-bit installation, while remembering that installers can use custom paths.
A 32-bit application can run on 64-bit Windows, but a 64-bit-only application cannot load a 32-bit plug-in. Installing an alleged x64 version of in_ape.dll is not a reliable solution because no separate official 64-bit build is established here.
If the current player no longer supports Winamp-compatible input plug-ins, disable or remove the obsolete plug-in and use the player’s native APE decoder. Replacing the legacy player may be safer than forcing an old plug-in into a current application.

Sometimes an application reports more than one missing file. If the additional error specifically names a Microsoft Visual C++ runtime, download the Visual C++ Redistributable from Microsoft and install the architecture matching the host application.
For an older 32-bit player, the x86 runtime is generally the relevant package, even when Windows itself is 64-bit. Installing the x64 package alone does not satisfy a 32-bit application.
Do not treat Visual C++ as the primary fix for in_ape.dll. It will not recreate a missing application plug-in.
Fix 6: Repair corrupted Windows components
Windows repair commands are secondary checks. They repair protected Windows components, not ordinary third-party plug-ins, but they are appropriate if several unrelated applications are failing or Windows files appear damaged.

- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for the operation to complete.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the affected application again.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before System File Checker. If SFC reports that it repaired files, restart and test. If it reports that some files could not be repaired, repeat the process once after DISM completes, then focus on repairing the application itself.

Running these commands repeatedly will not restore a missing in_ape.dll from a player installation.

Fix 7: Install pending Windows updates
An update failure is not the most likely cause of this application plug-in error, but keeping Windows current can resolve broader servicing problems.

- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install available updates.
- Restart when prompted.
- Return to Windows Update and check again.
If the problem began immediately after an update, record the exact error and application name before considering rollback or System Restore. Do not remove unrelated updates merely because in_ape.dll is missing.
Fix 8: Update or reinstall drivers only for a separate hardware problem
in_ape.dll is not a hardware driver. Device Manager is therefore not the correct place to repair this file. Use it only if the same computer also has an unrelated audio-device problem, such as missing speakers, a disabled sound card, or a device warning.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Sound, video and game controllers.
- Right-click the affected audio device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if prompted.
For a manufacturer-provided driver, choose Browse my computer for drivers only when you already have the correct package. Do not replace in_ape.dll with a sound-card driver.

Why regsvr32 usually does not help
Do not run this command as a routine fix:
regsvr32 in_ape.dll
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose registration functions such as DllRegisterServer, commonly used by certain COM or ActiveX components. An audio input plug-in is normally discovered by its host application from the application’s plug-in directory.
If you run regsvr32 and receive an entry-point error, that does not prove the file is bad. It usually means the DLL was never designed for global registration. Repair the player instead.
When to stop restoring the plug-in
Stop trying to restore in_ape.dll when:
- The current application no longer supports Winamp-style input plug-ins.
- The only available copy comes from an unknown download site.
- Defender continues detecting or removing the file.
- The restored file causes entry-point or initialization errors.
- The player works after the plug-in is disabled, except for legacy APE playback.
- A current player provides native APE support.
In those cases, remove or disable the obsolete plug-in and migrate playlists and music to a maintained player. Keeping an old DLL loaded only to preserve one legacy feature can create more compatibility and security problems than it solves.

Frequently asked questions
Is in_ape.dll a Windows file?
No. It is a third-party application plug-in associated with Monkey’s Audio and older Winamp-compatible software.
Does Microsoft provide in_ape.dll?
No Microsoft component repair tool should be expected to provide it. Microsoft’s DISM and SFC commands repair protected Windows components, not this application plug-in.
Should I put it in System32?
No. Put it only in the host application’s documented plug-in directory, and only when restoring a trusted copy for a compatible application.
Can I download the DLL by itself?
That is unsafe and often ineffective. A random copy can contain malware, target the wrong architecture, or require companion files from a different application version. Use the original installer, a trusted application backup, or the publisher’s official software distribution.
Will installing Visual C++ fix the error?
Only if the error separately identifies a missing Microsoft runtime. Visual C++ does not recreate in_ape.dll.

The documented historical file is 32-bit. Do not assume that an alleged 64-bit copy is official or compatible.
Why does MediaMonkey mention this file?
Older MediaMonkey installations could use Winamp-compatible plug-ins. If that installation expects in_ape.dll, repair or reinstall MediaMonkey and verify its plug-in configuration rather than placing the DLL in a Windows folder.
What if the error appears only when opening APE files?
The player may start correctly while its APE decoder is missing or disabled. Check the player’s plug-in settings, restore the complete plug-in package, or use a current player with native APE support.
