“The program can’t start because in_dshow.dll is missing from your computer.”

If in_dshow.dll is missing, not found, or could not be loaded, the problem is usually a damaged Winamp installation rather than a broken Windows system file. in_dshow.dll is Winamp’s Nullsoft DirectShow Decoder input plugin, used for video playback through Windows DirectShow.

  • Winamp will not start after reinstalling or moving it: repair or reinstall Winamp first.
  • The error began after antivirus activity: check quarantine and restore the file only after verifying the Winamp installation.
  • Winamp opens, but only some video files fail: the plugin may be present, while a required DirectShow filter or codec is missing.
  • You have more than one Winamp folder: check which winamp.exe your shortcut actually launches.
  • You copied Winamp from another computer or mixed old files with a newer installation: reinstall the plugin supplied with the active Winamp build.
  • Several Windows components or applications are failing: run Windows Update, DISM, and SFC as secondary repair steps.
  • You are considering regsvr32 or a DLL download site: stop. This plugin normally does not require COM registration, and random DLL replacements are unsafe.

What in_dshow.dll is and where it belongs

Winamp input plugins act as decoders. The DirectShow input plugin lets Winamp hand supported media to the Windows DirectShow system. Historical Winamp support material associates it with formats including MPG, MPEG, M2V, and AVI, although the plugin alone does not guarantee that every codec or container will play.

It is not a Windows system DLL. It normally belongs below the Winamp installation directory, in:

C:Program Files (x86)WinampPluginsin_dshow.dll

Your path may differ if Winamp was installed elsewhere. The important point is that the file must be inside the Plugins folder belonging to the same Winamp installation as the winamp.exe you launch. Do not place it in:

C:WindowsSystem32
C:WindowsSysWOW64

A generic Windows loader message can make this look like a system-file problem, but the named file is a third-party application plugin.

Fix 1: Repair or reinstall Winamp

This is the safest and most likely solution because the official Winamp installer supplies the matching plugin and its surrounding files.

Check the active Winamp folder

  1. Right-click the Winamp shortcut.
  2. Select Properties.
  3. On the Shortcut tab, read the Target field.
  4. Note the folder containing winamp.exe.
  5. Open that folder in File Explorer.
  6. Open its Plugins folder.
  7. Check whether in_dshow.dll is present.

If the shortcut points to an old or deleted folder, remove the stale shortcut and launch the copy installed in the correct directory. Multiple Winamp installations can cause you to repair one copy while Windows continues launching another.

Reinstall Winamp correctly

  1. Close Winamp.
  2. Open Settings with Windows key + I.
  3. Select Apps, then Installed apps.
  4. Search for Winamp.
  5. Select the three-dot menu and choose Uninstall if the installation is damaged.
  6. Restart Windows.
  7. Obtain Winamp from its official distribution.
  8. Run the installer.
  9. When component choices appear, keep the standard input and plugin components selected.
  10. Install to the intended Winamp directory.
  11. Start Winamp from the new installation.
  12. Recheck Pluginsin_dshow.dll.

If the installer offers a repair or modify option instead of uninstalling, use it and ensure input plugins are included. Do not copy a DLL from another computer or from an unrelated Winamp build.

Confirm the result

Start Winamp and open the video file that previously failed. If Winamp launches and the file plays, the plugin was restored correctly. If Winamp still reports that the specified module could not be found, the file may exist but one of its dependencies may be missing. Continue with the checks below.

Fix 2: Check antivirus quarantine

Security software can remove or quarantine a legitimate application plugin, particularly after a scan or a cleanup operation.

  1. Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
  2. Select Virus & threat protection.
  3. Choose Protection history.
  4. Look for an event involving Winamp or in_dshow.dll.
  5. Expand the event and review the detected path.
  6. Confirm that the path belongs to the Winamp installation you actually use.
  7. Do not restore the file if the path is unfamiliar or the installer source is uncertain.
  8. If the installation is legitimate, update or reinstall Winamp from its official source.
  9. If your security product confirms the file is safe, restore it according to that product’s instructions.
  10. Add an exclusion only if you understand the security impact and trust the complete installation.

If antivirus repeatedly quarantines the file after an official reinstall, stop replacing it manually. Investigate the detection, installer provenance, and file path instead of disabling protection.

Fix 3: Distinguish a missing plugin from a missing codec

The two problems can look similar but require different repairs.

Signs that the plugin is missing

  • Winamp reports the error as soon as it starts.
  • Winamp cannot load an input plugin.
  • in_dshow.dll is absent from the active Plugins folder.
  • The problem began after reinstalling Winamp, deleting files, running cleanup software, or moving the Winamp directory.

Repair Winamp rather than installing a codec.

Signs that a codec or DirectShow filter is missing

  • Winamp opens normally.
  • Music playback works.
  • Only certain video formats fail.
  • in_dshow.dll is present in the correct Plugins folder.
  • Different video files behave differently.

DirectShow uses filters supplied by Windows, applications, or installed media software. The presence of in_dshow.dll does not mean that every required video or audio codec is available.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

First test a known-good file in a format your installation previously played. Then check Winamp’s input and video plugin settings. If only a particular format fails, install or repair the required codec or filter through a reputable, trusted software source. Do not assume that a random codec pack will restore the missing Winamp plugin.

Fix 4: Check architecture and mixed installations

Classic Winamp installations and their plugins are commonly 32-bit. A 64-bit version of Windows can run a 32-bit Winamp program, but a 64-bit application cannot load a 32-bit plugin.

Do not infer the application architecture from the Windows architecture alone. Check the Winamp installation you are using and keep its plugin files together.

Use this procedure:

  1. Right-click the Winamp shortcut and select Open file location.
  2. Right-click winamp.exe.
  3. Select Properties and open the Details tab.
  4. Confirm that this is the intended Winamp executable.
  5. Open its Plugins folder.
  6. Remove shortcuts that point to older Winamp directories.
  7. Reinstall Winamp if files from different installations were combined.

The safest compatibility rule is to use in_dshow.dll supplied with the same Winamp build. Do not mix a plugin from an old installation with another application or attempt to make a 64-bit program load it.

Fix 5: Reinstall or update related display drivers

A graphics driver normally does not restore in_dshow.dll, but an outdated or damaged display driver can contribute to video playback failures after the plugin has been restored.

Check the driver in Device Manager

  1. Right-click the Start button.
  2. Select Device Manager.
  3. Expand Display adapters.
  4. Right-click your graphics adapter.
  5. Select Update driver.
  6. Choose Search automatically for drivers.
  7. Restart Windows if a driver is installed.
  8. Test Winamp again.

If the problem began immediately after a driver update:

  1. Return to Device Manager.
  2. Right-click the display adapter.
  3. Select Properties.
  4. Open the Driver tab.
  5. Select Roll Back Driver if that option is available.
  6. Restart and test playback.

For a persistent driver problem, obtain the driver from the computer or graphics-device manufacturer. Driver repair is secondary here: reinstalling Winamp remains the definitive fix for a missing in_dshow.dll.

Outbyte Driver Updater can reduce the manual work of hunting through multiple driver versions: its free scan shows what it identifies, while driver installation is handled by the full version. It is optional, and it does not replace reinstalling Winamp for this plugin-specific error.

Fix 6: Repair Windows components only when Windows has broader problems

DISM and SFC repair Windows components and protected Windows files. They are unlikely to restore a third-party DLL deleted from Winamp’s directory, so use them when other Windows features are also malfunctioning.

Before running them:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Windows Update.
  3. Select Check for updates.
  4. Install available updates.
  5. Restart Windows.

Then run the commands in this order:

  1. Open the Start menu.
  2. Type Command Prompt.
  3. Right-click Command Prompt.
  4. Select Run as administrator.
  5. Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
  6. Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
  1. Wait for it to complete.
  2. Run:
sfc /scannow
  1. Wait until the verification reaches 100 percent.
  2. Restart Windows and test Winamp.

If DISM or SFC reports repairs, test Windows and Winamp again. If both complete without resolving the error, return to the Winamp repair rather than repeating them indefinitely.

When manually comparing Windows components and repeating SFC/DISM is taking too long, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for issues and show what it identifies; the repair function is handled by the full version. It is optional, and reinstalling Winamp remains the definitive fix when in_dshow.dll itself is missing.

Avoid regsvr32 for this plugin

Do not normally run:

regsvr32 in_dshow.dll

regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. Winamp input plugins are normally loaded by Winamp from its plugin directory and do not normally need COM registration. Running the command may produce an entry-point error without fixing playback.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use regsvr32 only when the software vendor specifically instructs you to register a particular component.

If Winamp still fails after reinstalling

Try these final checks:

  1. Confirm that the error names the in_dshow.dll under the active Winamp directory.
  2. Temporarily test with a clean Winamp profile.
  3. Disable or remove recently added Winamp plugins one at a time.
  4. Check whether a third-party media filter is interfering.
  5. Test several media files to separate a general plugin failure from a format-specific codec issue.
  6. Run a full security scan if the file disappeared unexpectedly.
  7. Check disk health and restore from a known-good backup if other files are also vanishing.
  8. Use System Restore only when the issue clearly follows a broader system change.

Prevention

  • Keep Winamp and its Plugins folder together.
  • Avoid deleting files described as unused without confirming their owner.
  • Keep shortcuts pointed at the active installation.
  • Do not mix files from multiple Winamp builds.
  • Review antivirus quarantine before restoring application files.
  • Back up the working Winamp installation and profile.
  • Never download in_dshow.dll from random DLL sites.
  • Never copy it into System32 or SysWOW64.

A third-party DLL download can contain malware, the wrong architecture, or an incompatible version, and it often leaves the damaged Winamp installation unresolved. The safe source is the official Winamp installer, followed by verification that the plugin is located in that installation’s Plugins directory.

FAQ

Is in_dshow.dll part of Windows?

No. It is a Winamp input plugin that uses Windows DirectShow technology.

Which program installs it?

Winamp, historically associated with the Nullsoft Winamp plugin system, installs it as the Nullsoft DirectShow Decoder.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do I need Microsoft Visual C++ or DirectX to restore it?

Those components do not normally reinstall a missing Winamp plugin. Repair Winamp first.

Should I copy the file into System32?

No. Keep it in the matching Winamp Plugins folder.

Why does Winamp start but some videos still fail?

The plugin may be loading correctly while a required DirectShow codec or filter is missing. Check the specific formats that fail.

Will SFC fix in_dshow.dll?

Normally no. SFC repairs protected Windows files, not ordinary Winamp plugins.

Does a 64-bit Windows installation require a 64-bit plugin?

Not necessarily. Windows can run a 32-bit Winamp installation. The plugin and the Winamp application must be compatible with each other.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What is the best first step?

Reinstall or repair Winamp from its official distribution with the input/plugin components selected.
