The specified module signdrv.dll was not found.
signdrv.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.
The 60-second answer is to install pending Windows updates, restart, then run DISM followed by System File Checker from an elevated Command Prompt. signdrv.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows component used by Windows Management Instrumentation to report information about digitally signed Plug and Play drivers, not a Visual C++ runtime, DirectX file, .NET component or ordinary game DLL.
Do not download a replacement from a random DLL website. A copied file can have the wrong architecture, Windows build, signature or dependencies, and it may introduce malware without repairing the underlying Windows problem.
What signdrv.dll does
Windows uses signdrv.dll as the WMI provider associated with the Win32_PnPSignedDriver class in the RootCIMV2 namespace. This class exposes information about installed signed drivers, including driver names, versions, manufacturers, signer details, device IDs and signing status. Microsoft documents the relationship between the class and SignDrv.dll in its Win32_PnPSignedDriver documentation.
The normal native location is:
%windir%System32signdrv.dll
On 64-bit Windows, 32-bit applications are subject to Windows file-system redirection. A 32-bit process that requests the System32 path may be redirected to the 32-bit system directory, normally %windir%SysWOW64. This does not mean you should copy files between those folders. Windows supplies and manages the architecture-appropriate files through servicing.
The filename alone does not prove that a file is safe or malicious. Location, Microsoft digital signature and how the file arrived on the computer all matter.
The most likely causes
| What happened | Likely cause | Best response |
|---|---|---|
| Several programs show the error | Missing or corrupted Windows component | Update Windows, then run DISM and SFC |
| The problem began after a scan | Antivirus quarantine | Check Windows Security Protection history |
| DISM or SFC reports corruption | Damaged servicing store or interrupted update | Complete updates, reboot and repeat repair |
| Only one old program fails | Damaged application or stale reference | Repair or reinstall that application |
| The problem began after a driver change | Driver or system modification | Roll back the driver or use System Restore |
| The file exists but will not load | Missing dependency, bad architecture or invalid file | Check the application, signature and event details |
“The specified module could not be found” does not always mean that signdrv.dll itself is missing. Windows loads a DLL and then resolves its dependencies separately. A missing dependency can produce the same message. Microsoft explains this behavior in its documentation on DLL search order.

This is the safest first repair when the error affects more than one application or appeared after a crash, cleanup operation or failed update.
Install pending updates
- Press Windows + I to open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install every available update.
- Restart Windows, even if it does not immediately require a restart.
- Return to Windows Update and check again until no further updates are offered.
Microsoft’s Windows Update instructions cover the current update process.
Run DISM and SFC
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes if User Account Control asks for permission.
- Run this command and wait for it to finish:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- After DISM completes, run:
sfc /scannow
- Leave the window open until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart the computer and test the program again.
Run DISM before SFC. DISM repairs the Windows component store that SFC uses as a source for replacing protected files. Microsoft provides these commands and result explanations in its System File Checker repair guidance.
If SFC reports that it found corrupt files and successfully repaired them, restart and test again. If it reports that it found corrupt files but could not fix some of them, complete Windows Update, restart, and run DISM and SFC again. Persistent failures may require Windows recovery or an in-place repair using official Windows installation media.

If manually identifying the damaged component and repeating DISM/SFC is taking too long, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for system problems and show what needs attention; its repair function is provided by the full version, and it is not required for Windows repair.
Fix 2: Check whether Windows Security quarantined the file
Windows Security or another antivirus product may remove a damaged or suspicious copy of the file. This is especially likely when the error first appeared immediately after a security scan.
- Open Start and search for Windows Security.
- Open it and select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent detections and quarantined items.
- Look for an entry mentioning
signdrv.dll. - Expand the entry and inspect its file path, detection name and action.
Do not restore the file solely because an application says it is missing. Restore or allow it only when the file is in the expected Windows directory, has a trustworthy Microsoft digital signature and was incorrectly quarantined. Microsoft warns that allowing an unsafe file can expose the device. Its Protection History guidance explains the available actions.
If the file was found outside the Windows directory, do not assume it is the genuine system component. Run a full malware scan and continue with DISM and SFC instead of downloading a replacement.

Fix 3: Repair the application that reports the error
If only one program or game reports signdrv.dll, the program may have a damaged installation, an outdated manifest or another missing dependency. The application may not own the DLL at all. It may simply be the first program that asks Windows for signed-driver information.
For a traditional desktop application
- Open Settings with Windows + I.
- Select Apps, then Installed apps.
- Find the affected program.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Choose Advanced options if available.
- Select Repair.
- Test the program.
- If it still fails, return to the same screen and select Reset only if you understand that it may remove the application’s stored settings.
- If neither option is available, uninstall the program.
- Restart Windows.
- Install it again from its original installer or the software publisher’s official source.
For a game
Open the game launcher and use its Verify, Verify integrity, Repair, or equivalent file-checking command. The exact menu name depends on the launcher. Let the check finish, restart the launcher and test the game.
If the program still fails after its files are repaired and Windows passes DISM/SFC, identify the exact application, its installation directory and the full error. The remaining problem may be an application manifest or another dependency rather than signdrv.dll.

Fix 4: Check drivers without replacing signdrv.dll
Although signdrv.dll is a Windows WMI provider rather than a normal hardware-driver DLL, the information it exposes concerns signed Plug and Play drivers. A recent GPU, audio, chipset, printer or other device-driver change can therefore coincide with the error.

Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Check Device Manager
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand categories such as Display adapters, Sound, video and game controllers, System devices, Printers and Universal Serial Bus controllers.
- Look for a device with a yellow warning symbol.
- Right-click the affected device and select Properties.
- Read the message on the General tab.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Use Update Driver and select Search automatically for drivers, or install the current driver from the device manufacturer.
- If the error began immediately after an update and Roll Back Driver is available, use it.
- Restart Windows.
Do not delete files from System32 or SysWOW64 to clean up an old driver. Use the manufacturer’s installer or the Windows driver-management options.
When checking many devices manually is impractical, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers and identify which packages need attention; the driver installation function is provided by the full version, and it is not required if you prefer the manufacturer’s support pages.
Fix 5: Check architecture and file location
Do not copy a 32-bit DLL into System32 or a 64-bit DLL into SysWOW64. On 64-bit Windows, System32 is normally the native 64-bit system directory, while SysWOW64 is used for 32-bit redirection. Windows controls which copy a process sees.
To inspect the file location:
- Open File Explorer.
- Enter
%windir%System32in the address bar. - Search for
signdrv.dll. - If you find it, right-click it and select Properties.
- Open the Digital Signatures tab if present.
- Inspect the signer and signature status.
A file with the right name in an application folder is not automatically the Windows copy. If the file exists but the application still reports it as missing, investigate dependencies and application architecture rather than replacing the file.
Fix 6: Use System Restore after a recent change
System Restore is appropriate when the error began after a driver installation, Windows change or other system modification and a suitable restore point exists.
- Press Windows + R.
- Type:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point created before the error began.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Review the changes.
- Select Next, then Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart and complete the restore.
System Restore does not remove personal documents, but it can remove drivers, applications and updates installed after the selected restore point. Microsoft describes the process in its System Restore instructions.
Do not run regsvr32 as a routine fix
regsvr32 is not a general missing-DLL repair command. It registers DLLs that provide a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer, as described in Microsoft’s regsvr32 documentation.
Running this command:
regsvr32 signdrv.dll
does not restore a deleted Windows component, repair the servicing store or fix a missing dependency. It can also produce a misleading error when the DLL is not designed to be registered that way. Use Windows servicing, application repair or System Restore instead.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
When Windows repair still fails
If DISM and SFC cannot repair the component:
- Install all pending updates and restart.
- Run DISM again, followed by SFC.
- Check whether Windows Security quarantined the file.
- Try System Restore if a suitable restore point exists.
- Use Windows recovery or an in-place repair with official Windows installation media.
- Back up important files before major recovery work.
There is no legitimate standalone Microsoft signdrv.dll redistributable intended for manual downloading. Official Windows servicing is the correct source for a Windows system file.
FAQ
Is signdrv.dll safe?
It is a genuine Microsoft Windows component when it is the expected Windows copy and has a valid Microsoft signature. The filename alone is not enough to establish safety, particularly if the file is outside the Windows directory.
Where should signdrv.dll be located?
The native copy is normally under:
%windir%System32signdrv.dll
Windows handles 32-bit redirection on 64-bit systems. Do not manually choose between System32 and SysWOW64.
Should I download signdrv.dll?
No. Random DLL download sites can provide malware, an incorrect Windows build, the wrong architecture or a file with missing dependencies. Repair Windows through Windows Update, DISM and SFC.
Is signdrv.dll part of Visual C++ or DirectX?
No. It is associated with Windows Management Instrumentation and the Win32_PnPSignedDriver class. Reinstalling Visual C++ or DirectX is not the logical first repair.
Why does the message say the module is missing when the file exists?
A dependency may be missing, or the application may be loading an incompatible or invalid copy. Check the application installation, architecture, event details and file signature.
Will reinstalling a driver fix it?
It can help when the error began after a hardware-driver change, but it does not replace the Windows repair sequence. Start with updates, DISM and SFC, then investigate the specific device if Device Manager reports a problem.
What details matter if the error continues?
Record the exact message, affected application, Windows version, file location, whether the error affects other programs, recent updates or driver changes, and the final DISM and SFC results. Those details distinguish a Windows component problem from an application or dependency failure.
