in_mp3pro.dll is a legacy third-party Winamp input plug-in, not a Windows system file. If Windows says in_mp3pro.dll is missing or cannot load, the safest fix is usually to repair the application that used it or disable the plug-in so Winamp can use its normal MPEG decoder.
The file is associated with the THOMSON and Coding Technologies mp3PRO decoder for Winamp. Older compatible audio programs, including some MediaMonkey installations, could also load it from their own plug-in folders. Windows does not require it for startup, ordinary MP3 playback, DirectX, .NET, or Microsoft Visual C++.

Before changing anything, identify the program and path
A message mentioning in_mp3pro.dll does not prove that Winamp generated it. First identify the application named in the error and the location Windows is trying to use.
Check these details:
- Read the title bar and body of the error dialog.
- Note whether it names Winamp, another media player, an installer, or a game.
- If a path is shown, record the folder containing the DLL.
- Open File Explorer and check the application’s installation directory.
- Look for an application-specific
Pluginsfolder.
Typical Winamp locations are:
C:Program FilesWinampPlugins
C:Program Files (x86)WinampPlugins
The file may also exist in a compatible audio application’s plug-in directory. Do not copy it to either of these locations:

Those are Windows component directories. in_mp3pro.dll is an application plug-in and belongs with the program that loads it.
Representative Windows loader messages include:
- “The program can’t start because in_mp3pro.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “in_mp3pro.dll was not found.”
- “The code execution cannot proceed because in_mp3pro.dll was not found.”
- “in_mp3pro.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
- “The specified module could not be found.”
- “The procedure entry point could not be located in the dynamic link library in_mp3pro.dll.”
These messages describe different loading failures. They do not identify one universal cause.
Fix 1: Disable the legacy plug-in first
Time needed: 2 to 5 minutes
If you only play ordinary MP3 files, disabling in_mp3pro.dll is the most useful first test. Winamp’s standard MPEG input plug-in, commonly named in_mp3.dll, handles normal MP3 playback. The mp3PRO plug-in is relevant only to legacy mp3PRO content and can conflict with normal decoding, metadata detection, startup, or newer Winamp-compatible software.
- Close Winamp.
- Open Task Manager with Ctrl + Shift + Esc.
- Select Processes or Details.
- If
winamp.exeor a related audio application is still running, select it and choose End task. - Open the relevant
Pluginsfolder. - Locate:
text
in_mp3pro.dll
- Right-click the file and select Rename.
- Change the name to:
text
in_mp3pro.dll.off
- Confirm the extension change if Windows asks.
- Start Winamp and play a standard MP3.
You can move the file to a temporary folder instead, but renaming it makes the change easy to reverse. Do not delete it until you know the application no longer needs it.
How to tell whether this worked
The fix is successful if Winamp opens without the error, ordinary MP3 files play, and the application no longer crashes or displays incorrect file information. If the problem disappears after the rename, the legacy plug-in was the immediate cause rather than a missing Windows component.
If Winamp still reports the same error, check for another Winamp installation. A computer can contain both Program Files and Program Files (x86) installations, each with its own Plugins folder. Also inspect alternate folders referenced by shortcuts or portable installations.
If you specifically need mp3PRO playback, leave the file renamed for now and continue with the reinstall steps below.

Fix 2: Repair or reinstall the application that supplied it
Time needed: 10 to 20 minutes
The definitive repair for an application plug-in is a clean repair or reinstall of the application that originally installed it. Do not assume that reinstalling a newer copy of Winamp will restore this old decoder. Third-party files can remain in an old Plugins directory, while a newer installer may not include the historical mp3PRO component.

First try Windows’ installed-app repair controls:
- Press Windows + I to open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on Windows 10.
- Find Winamp or the other application named in the error.
- Select the three-dot menu on Windows 11, or select the application on Windows 10.
- Choose Advanced options if available.
- Select Repair.
- Start the program and test playback.
If there is no Repair option, use the application’s original installer. Obtain it from a trusted original source or installation archive that you already control. A currently maintained official Coding Technologies or mp3PRO download page has not been verified, so do not treat random “DLL download” pages as an official replacement source.
For a clean reinstall:
- Close the application.
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Uninstall Winamp or the affected audio program.
- Restart Windows.
- Before reinstalling, inspect the old application directory.
- Back up playlists, preferences, and media-library data if you need them.
- If the old
Pluginsfolder remains, rename it to something such asPlugins.old. - Install the trusted application copy.
- Start the program once.
- Close it and check whether the new installation created a fresh
Pluginsfolder. - Restore only the plug-ins you recognize and actually need.
- Test ordinary MP3 playback before adding
in_mp3pro.dllback.
If the original mp3PRO installer is available and trusted, install it into the compatible application rather than extracting the DLL manually. If it is not available, leave the plug-in disabled. Ordinary MP3 playback does not justify obtaining an unverified replacement.

Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix 3: Check antivirus quarantine before restoring anything
Time needed: 5 to 10 minutes
Security software may remove or quarantine an old DLL if it is damaged, suspicious, unsigned, or bundled with an installer. An old file is not automatically malware, but its age and unfamiliar origin mean you should verify the source before restoring it.
In Windows Security:
- Open the Start menu.
- Type Windows Security.
- Open the app.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent detections.
- Open any detection that names
in_mp3pro.dllor the original audio installer. - Read the detected path and action.
- Do not choose Allow on device merely because the filename matches the error.
- If the file came from a trusted, intact installer, scan that installer first.
- If you cannot verify its source, leave the file quarantined.
- Reinstall the application from a trusted original installer, or keep the plug-in disabled.
Do not turn off Microsoft Defender or another antivirus product globally to force an old DLL into place. If a security product repeatedly removes the file, treat that as a reason to verify the installer and the file’s origin, not as a reason to bypass protection.
Fix 4: Check the plug-in architecture and host application
Time needed: 5 to 15 minutes
Historical records identify the mp3PRO decoder as an x86, 32-bit-era Winamp plug-in. No verified native 64-bit build should be assumed from the filename alone.
A 32-bit plug-in must be loaded by a compatible 32-bit host or by a host that explicitly supports that plug-in architecture. Copying it into a 64-bit Windows directory does not convert it into a 64-bit DLL.

Fix 5: Do not use regsvr32 for this Winamp plug-in
Time needed: 2 minutes
regsvr32 is not a general DLL repair command. It registers DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. A Winamp input plug-in is loaded through Winamp’s plug-in system, not registered as a Windows shared component.
Do not use this as a repair:
regsvr32 in_mp3pro.dll
It may produce an error stating that the DllRegisterServer entry point was not found, and it will not restore Winamp’s plug-in configuration. It also will not solve a missing dependency, wrong architecture, damaged file, or incompatible host.
Do not use Windows Features to install this file either. Windows Features can enable components such as legacy .NET or media capabilities, but they do not provide the historical Coding Technologies mp3PRO decoder.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesIf you are checking optional Windows components for a separate application problem:
- Press Windows + R.
- Type:
text
optionalfeatures
- Press Enter.
- Review the available Windows Features.
- Change only a feature required by the application’s documentation.
- Restart if Windows requests it.
That procedure does not restore in_mp3pro.dll. The correct repair remains an application reinstall or plug-in disablement.
Fix 6: Repair Windows components only when other system files are failing
Time needed: 15 to 30 minutes
SFC and DISM repair protected Windows components. They do not normally restore a third-party input plug-in from a Winamp Plugins folder. Use them when several unrelated applications report damaged or missing Windows DLLs, Windows Update is failing, or the system shows broader corruption symptoms.
Run DISM first:
- Open the Start menu.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Enter:
text
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Press Enter.
- Wait for the command to finish.
- Then enter:
text
sfc /scannow
- Press Enter.
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the affected application again.
If SFC reports that it repaired files, restart and retest. If it reports that it could not repair everything, repeat the process only as Microsoft’s broader Windows troubleshooting requires. These commands will not recreate a missing in_mp3pro.dll in Winamp’s application directory.

Fix 7: Check drivers only if the failure is broader than Winamp
Time needed: 10 to 25 minutes
A display, audio, or chipset driver is not the normal cause of a missing in_mp3pro.dll message. Driver work is appropriate only when multiple media applications crash, audio devices disappear, or the problem began after a Windows or hardware change.
To inspect audio drivers:
- Right-click the Start button.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Sound, video and game controllers.
- Right-click the active audio device.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Check the provider and driver status.
- Select Update Driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if a driver is installed.
You can also inspect Display adapters if video playback is failing across multiple programs. Do not replace a working driver just because in_mp3pro.dll is missing.

If checking many hardware vendors and versions manually is becoming guesswork, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify stale drivers; its free scan shows the findings, while driver installation is handled by the full version. Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Fix 8: Use System Restore only as a last resort
Time needed: 20 to 45 minutes
System Restore can return Windows system files and settings to an earlier restore point, but it may undo later software installations and configuration changes. It is not a substitute for reinstalling an obsolete application plug-in.
Use it only when:
- the error began immediately after a known software change,
- a suitable restore point exists,
- several applications are affected, or
- normal application repair has failed.
To open it:
- Press Windows + R.
- Enter:
text
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point dated before the problem began.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Review the programs and drivers that may be changed.
- Select Next, then Finish.
- Let Windows restart and complete the rollback.
If only Winamp reports the error, disabling or reinstalling the application is more precise than rolling back Windows.
Why the error appears
The common causes are:
| Cause | What it means | Best response |
|---|---|---|
| Plug-in deleted | The application still expects the old decoder | Disable it or restore it from the original installer |
| Antivirus quarantine | Security software removed or isolated the file | Verify the source before restoring; otherwise reinstall or leave disabled |
| Incomplete uninstall | Old configuration or plug-in references remain | Rename the old Plugins folder and perform a clean reinstall |
| Damaged DLL | The file may be incomplete or corrupted | Replace it through a trusted application installer |
| Wrong architecture | A 32-bit plug-in is being loaded by an incompatible host | Use a compatible host or disable the plug-in |
| Decoder conflict | The legacy decoder interferes with normal MP3 handling | Rename in_mp3pro.dll and use the standard MPEG decoder |
| Alternate installation | The error comes from another Winamp or audio-player folder | Identify the executable and inspect every relevant Plugins directory |
| Wider Windows damage | Multiple unrelated programs fail | Run DISM and SFC, then consider System Restore |
The exact version, size, hash, and signing status of a particular in_mp3pro.dll cannot be inferred from its filename. Do not use those details from an unrelated download page to judge the file on your computer.

Why random DLL downloads are a bad fix
Downloading a file with the right name does not guarantee that it has the right build, exports, architecture, dependencies, or contents. A random DLL may be modified, malicious, incompatible with your Winamp version, or unable to solve the damaged installation that caused the error.
Never place a downloaded copy in System32 or SysWOW64, and do not run registration commands against it. Use the original application installer when mp3PRO support is genuinely required. If you only need ordinary MP3 playback, rename or remove the legacy plug-in instead.
FAQ
Is in_mp3pro.dll a Windows file?
No. It is an application plug-in associated with the historical Coding Technologies mp3PRO decoder for Winamp. Windows does not need it for normal operation.

Does ordinary MP3 playback require it?
No. Winamp’s standard MPEG decoder handles ordinary MP3 playback. in_mp3pro.dll is relevant to legacy mp3PRO decoding and can be disabled when it causes conflicts.
Should I copy it into System32?
No. Keep it in the compatible application’s Plugins directory, or leave it disabled. Copying it into a Windows directory does not make an application plug-in work.
Why does Winamp crash after I add it?
The old 32-bit plug-in may conflict with decoder priority, metadata handling, or the behavior of a newer Winamp-compatible host. Close Winamp and rename the file to in_mp3pro.dll.off, then test again.
What if the message says “bad image” or “not designed to run on Windows”?
That can indicate a damaged DLL, wrong architecture, incompatible host, or missing dependency. Remove the file from the plug-in path, reinstall the compatible application from a trusted installer, and avoid downloading a replacement from an unverified source.
What if the error continues after I rename the file?
Check the exact application named in the dialog, alternate Winamp installations, startup shortcuts, and every Plugins directory. Another program may be trying to load its own copy.
