For a first playthrough of the modern MachineGames story, play Wolfenstein: The New Order → Wolfenstein: The Old Blood → Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus → Wolfenstein: Youngblood. That is release order: it introduces the main story before its prequel, then follows the continuing narrative through the later games. For strict story chronology, put The Old Blood first.
Recommended Wolfenstein order for a first playthrough
- Wolfenstein: The New Order
- Wolfenstein: The Old Blood
- Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus
- Wolfenstein: Youngblood
This order follows the games’ release sequence and keeps the main MachineGames narrative together. The Old Blood is a prequel, but playing it after The New Order lets newcomers begin with the modern story’s starting point before visiting the earlier events.

Wolfenstein story order by chronology
- Wolfenstein: The Old Blood
- Wolfenstein: The New Order
- Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus
- Wolfenstein: Youngblood
Bethesda says the events of The Old Blood lead up to The New Order. PlayStation describes The Old Blood as set 15 years before The New Order, and Youngblood as set 19 years after The New Colossus. Those are story-time intervals, not release dates. Bethesda’s support page and PlayStation’s Youngblood page establish these relationships.

Why the two orders differ
The Old Blood is a prequel
The Old Blood is a standalone prequel whose events lead into The New Order. Bethesda and Steam identify it as a prequel; MachineGames has also described it as a homage to Return to Castle Wolfenstein. Playing it first is the choice for strict chronology, while playing it second preserves the release-order introduction. Steam’s MachineGames catalog lists The Old Blood as a standalone prequel, and MachineGames’ site provides the studio context.
#1 Best Overall
The New Colossus follows The New Order
Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus is the sequel to The New Order. Bethesda situates its opening after BJ survives the events at the end of the earlier game, so it belongs after The New Order in either recommended sequence. Bethesda’s game page describes the sequel and its setup.
Youngblood comes later
Youngblood takes place 19 years after The New Colossus and centers on BJ’s twin daughters. It is the latest entry in the story sequence covered here.
Rank #2
Where Cyberpilot fits
Wolfenstein: Cyberpilot is an optional VR side game announced alongside Youngblood. Bethesda described Cyberpilot as a VR title and Youngblood as a co-op game, but the official source consulted does not establish Cyberpilot’s precise place in the story chronology. Add it as a side entry if you want the VR experience; no exact placement relative to Youngblood is confirmed by that announcement. Bethesda’s announcement covers both games.

This order covers the modern MachineGames narrative sequence, not every historical Wolfenstein release, multiplayer game, expansion, or related work. The sources establish the connections among The Old Blood, The New Order, The New Colossus, Youngblood, and Cyberpilot; they do not establish that earlier franchise entries are required to follow this sequence. The studio’s description of The Old Blood as a homage to Return to Castle Wolfenstein is context, not a prerequisite.
