“The program can’t start because incdapi.dll is missing from your computer. Try reinstalling the program to fix this problem.” An incdapi.dll error usually points to an old Nero InCD installation, not a missing Windows component.
Which fix applies to you
Use the path that matches when the error appears:
- Nero or InCD is still installed: repair or reinstall the matching Nero component.
- The message appears only during Windows startup: look for an orphaned InCD startup entry, service, or scheduled task.
- You recently removed, updated, or migrated Nero: uninstall the remaining entry, then disable any stale startup reference.
- Antivirus recently detected the file: inspect Protection history before restoring anything.
- The error says the file is not designed to run on Windows: suspect an incompatible or mixed Nero build rather than a simple missing file.
- Windows has several unrelated errors: run DISM and SFC, but do not expect them to restore this third-party DLL.
- You were considering a DLL website or
regsvr32: do neither as a first step. The correct repair is through the application that installed the file.
What is incdapi.dll
incdapi.dll is a third-party application DLL associated with InCD, Nero’s packet-writing software for Windows. InCD was used with rewritable optical media and was historically bundled with some Nero products.

Historical inventories identify the file as InCDapi, published by Nero AG or the older name Ahead Software AG. It was commonly found beside incd.exe in a folder similar to:
C:Program FilesaheadInCDincdapi.dll
The file is not part of Windows. Do not copy it into C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64.

Historical InCD installations contained a 32-bit incdapi.dll. One archived inventory recorded version 4.3.11.1 and a size of 692,736 bytes, but those details are not a universal specification. Different Nero releases can contain different builds, and there is no verified universal 64-bit replacement.
Fix 1: Repair or reinstall Nero InCD
This is the best fix when Nero is still installed or an application actively needs InCD.
Check whether Nero is installed
- Press Windows + I to open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on some Windows 10 builds.
- Search for Nero, InCD, or Nero Burning ROM.
- Select the entry and look for Modify, Change, Repair, or Uninstall.
You can also check the older interface:
- Press Windows + R.
- Enter
appwiz.cpl. - Press Enter.
- Select the Nero or InCD entry.
- Choose Change or Repair if the installer provides it.
Microsoft documents the available repair and uninstall paths in its guidance for removing or repairing programs.
Recommended Free Tools
Run the repair
Use Repair or Change first if it is available. Allow the installer to restore the original Nero components, then restart Windows and test the program again.
If there is no repair option:
- Close Nero and any disc-related applications.
- Uninstall the Nero or InCD entry.
- Restart Windows.
- Reinstall the same product from its original installation media or a compatible installer obtained from Nero’s official support or download channels.
- If the installer lets you choose components, install InCD only if you still need its packet-writing features.
- Restart again.
Do not combine incdapi.dll files from different Nero releases. A matching application build may depend on other private files, drivers, or services from the same release.
How to tell whether it worked
The repair succeeded if:
- Nero opens without the missing-file message.
- The startup error no longer appears.
- The repaired application can access the optical-media function that required InCD.
If the error remains but Nero is no longer needed, continue with the startup cleanup below instead of repeatedly reinstalling an old component.

Fix 2: Remove an obsolete startup reference
If the message appears during boot but you no longer use Nero or InCD, Windows may be trying to launch incd.exe after the main program was removed.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minutePC Slower Than It Used to Be?
A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11Uninstall any remaining Nero entry
- Open Settings with Windows + I.
- Select Apps, then Installed apps.
- Search for Nero and InCD.
- Uninstall any remaining related entry.
- Restart Windows.
If the entry is not visible:
- Press Windows + R.
- Enter
appwiz.cpl. - Press Enter.
- Remove any remaining Nero or InCD product from Programs and Features.
- Restart.
Disable the startup item
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
- Select Startup apps.
- Look for Nero, InCD,
incd.exe, or an unknown entry whose location points to an old Nero folder. - Right-click the entry and select Disable.
- Restart Windows.
Disabling first is safer than immediately deleting registry values. If the error disappears and you do not use Nero, the problem was an obsolete startup reference.
For a deeper check, Microsoft Sysinternals Autoruns can show startup entries, services, scheduled tasks, and other launch points that Task Manager may not display. Search its results for incd.exe, incdapi.dll, Nero, or Ahead. Clear the entry only after checking its path and confirming that it belongs to the obsolete Nero installation.
If you still use another Nero product, do not disable an entry merely because its name is unfamiliar. Confirm which executable launches it and whether that product depends on InCD.
Fix 3: Check antivirus quarantine
Security software can quarantine an old Nero component. That does not prove that incdapi.dll is malware, but you should not restore it automatically.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Open the detection related to
incdapi.dll. - Check the file path, detection name, publisher, and available signature information.
- If the file came from a trusted Nero installation, scan the installation and the file before considering Restore or Allow on device.
- If the path is unexpected, the publisher cannot be verified, or the detection remains suspicious, leave it quarantined.
- Reinstall Nero from trusted original media instead.
If Defender detects the restored file again, do not keep forcing it back into place. Remove the old component and investigate whether the Nero release is incompatible or damaged.

Fix 4: Address an incompatible or mixed installation
InCD is legacy software. A historical build may fail on a current Windows installation even when incdapi.dll is present. Causes can include obsolete drivers, permissions, missing companion files, or files copied from different Nero versions.
A 32-bit application can require a 32-bit DLL on 64-bit Windows. Installing a 64-bit substitute would not correct that mismatch. Windows also cannot make an old packet-writing driver compatible simply because the DLL has been copied into a system folder.
Use this sequence:
- Uninstall InCD if you no longer need to read or write media through it.
- If you need access to old discs, preserve the original Nero installer and media before changing the system.
- Reinstall the exact Nero release that originally supplied the component.
- Right-click the installer, select Properties, open Compatibility, and use compatibility settings only if the vendor’s installer requires them.
- Do not mix files from separate Nero installations.
- If the program still fails, identify the calling executable and the full file path in the error, Event Viewer, or Autoruns.
The message “not designed to run on Windows” generally indicates a bad, incompatible, or mismatched binary. Replacing it with a file from an unrelated release is more likely to create additional errors than to solve the problem.
Fix 5: Repair broader Windows corruption
DISM and SFC repair protected Windows components. Because incdapi.dll belongs to a third-party application, these commands normally will not recreate it. Use them when Windows has broader symptoms such as damaged built-in apps, failed updates, or multiple system-file errors.
- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Test the affected application.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC. If both commands report that Windows is healthy but incdapi.dll is still missing, repair the Nero installation or remove its startup reference instead.
When manually repeating DISM and SFC becomes guesswork, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for broader Windows issues and show what it identifies; its free scan reports findings, while repair actions are handled by the full version. Reinstalling Nero remains the definitive fix when the missing file belongs to InCD.
Fix 6: Check drivers only when the failure involves optical hardware
A driver update is not the primary fix for a missing incdapi.dll. However, if Device Manager shows an error for your optical drive or the failure began after a hardware or chipset change, check the relevant drivers.

- Expand DVD/CD-ROM drives.
- Right-click the optical drive and select Properties.
- Check the General and Driver tabs for an error code or failed device status.
- Also inspect Storage controllers and IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers if present.
- Use Update driver, or install a driver obtained from the computer or hardware manufacturer.
- Restart Windows and test again.
Do not remove a working storage controller driver merely because incdapi.dll is missing. If the hardware works and only the InCD message appears, return to the Nero repair or startup-removal path.
When checking several hardware drivers manually becomes a matter of hunting versions and guessing which one is stale, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify driver updates; its free scan shows findings, while driver installation is handled by the full version. It is not a substitute for reinstalling the Nero component that owns incdapi.dll.
Why common DLL fixes are unsafe
Do not download incdapi.dll separately
Avoid DLL archive sites, random forums, and links from unknown download pages. A replacement can have the wrong Nero version, wrong architecture, malware, or missing companion dependencies. Copying it into System32 may also hide the real problem while creating a system-wide file conflict.
Use the original Nero installation media or Nero’s official support and download channels. Current Nero pages list modern products and do not clearly provide a current standalone InCD redistributable, so do not assume that a separate “latest” file exists.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Do not register it with regsvr32
regsvr32 is not a general DLL repair command. It applies to DLLs that provide registration functions such as DllRegisterServer. An application-private runtime DLL such as incdapi.dll should not be registered speculatively.
If you run:
regsvr32 incdapi.dll
you may receive an entry-point or module error, and success would not necessarily repair the Nero installation. Restore the owning application instead.
Do not start with Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET
No authoritative evidence identifies incdapi.dll as a Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable, DirectX, or .NET component. Installing those packages is not the default solution. Investigate a separate dependency only if the Nero installer or the exact error identifies one.

Prevention and final checks
- Keep the original Nero installer and disc media if you depend on legacy InCD features.
- Uninstall Nero through Windows before deleting its folders.
- After uninstalling, check Startup apps for
incd.exe. - Do not use registry cleaners to remove DLL errors.
- Avoid copying application DLLs into Windows system directories.
- If the error began immediately after an update or installation, System Restore is reasonable only when normal repair and uninstall options fail.
- If Nero is still installed, repair the matching release.
- If Nero is gone and the message appears only at startup, disable or remove the confirmed orphaned entry.
- If the file is quarantined, verify its origin before restoring it.
FAQ
Is incdapi.dll a Windows system file?
No. It is associated with Nero InCD and should normally remain with that application rather than in System32 or SysWOW64.
Which program installs incdapi.dll?
Historical installations associate it with InCD, Nero’s packet-writing software. It may have arrived as part of an older Nero product.
Is incdapi.dll 32-bit or 64-bit?
Historical evidence identifies a 32-bit build. Different releases may differ, and no verified universal 64-bit build should be assumed.
Will reinstalling Visual C++ fix it?
Not normally. The direct fix is to repair or reinstall the Nero/InCD installation that supplied the file.
Why does the error appear after startup?
Windows may still be launching incd.exe through a startup entry, service, or scheduled task after InCD was damaged or removed.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Can SFC restore incdapi.dll?
No. SFC repairs protected Windows files, while incdapi.dll is a third-party application file.
What if I no longer use Nero?
Uninstall remaining Nero or InCD entries, disable the confirmed obsolete startup item, and restart. Do not reinstall the DLL merely to silence an unused program.
What if Nero is installed but the error continues?
Check the file path and calling executable, then perform a clean repair or reinstall using the matching Nero release. A mismatched build or obsolete driver may be preventing the file from loading.
