If Indiana Jones and the Great Circle is switching foliage, geometry, or shadows from low detail to high detail right in front of you, try this Windows PC configuration tweak:
r_lodscale 3Add it to the game’s configuration file to increase the distance at which higher-detail assets are retained. It can reduce visible LOD and some shadow pop-in, but it is an unofficial workaround—not a guaranteed fix for every streaming, stutter, or rendering problem.
What r_lodscale changes
Level of detail, or LOD, controls when the game swaps a distant object for a more detailed version as you approach it. Increasing r_lodscale can delay those swaps, making geometry, foliage, environmental objects, and some shadow transitions less obvious while you move or turn the camera.
That does not mean it fixes every kind of “pop-in.” The command is not proven to eliminate blurry textures that sharpen after loading, streaming hitches, frame-generation artifacts, missing shadows caused by another bug, or stutter from autosaves, checkpoints, shader compilation, or VRAM pressure. Player reports also indicate that the issue is not limited to one GPU brand. Community discussion on Steam describes both shadow and LOD pop-in on different systems.

How to apply the PC fix permanently
This method is for the Windows PC version. It is not a verified solution for Xbox, PlayStation 5, or Nintendo Switch 2.
- Close the game completely.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Paste this path into the Run box:
%USERPROFILE%Saved GamesMachineGamesTheGreatCirclebase- Press Enter.
- Make a backup copy of
TheGreatCircleConfig.cfgbefore editing it. - Open the original file in Notepad or another plain-text editor.
- Add this line at the end of the file:
r_lodscale 3- Save the file, ensuring Windows does not append
.txtto the filename. - Launch the game and revisit the area where the pop-in was most noticeable.
The full file path normally looks like this:
C:UsersYourNameSaved GamesMachineGamesTheGreatCirclebaseTheGreatCircleConfig.cfgThe configuration is stored in the saved-game directory, not normally in the Steam installation folder. The documented path and command are listed by the community Nexus Mods fix.
Test the command before editing the file
If the developer console is available in your installation, you can compare the setting during a live session. Load into the game, press ~—or the key assigned to the console on your keyboard—and enter:

r_lodscale 3To compare it with the usual default value, enter:
r_lodscale 1Console access and keyboard shortcuts can vary by version, installation, and keyboard layout, so treat this as an optional test. A console change may apply only to the current session; editing TheGreatCircleConfig.cfg is the persistent method described by the community documentation. Some posts show the value in quotation marks, as r_lodscale "3"; the important parts are the r_lodscale variable and its numeric value.

Why use 3 instead of 5?
r_lodscale 5 was the earlier setting circulated in guides and downloads. The maintained Nexus Mods description was later updated to recommend 3 after users reported glitches at 5. That makes 3 the sensible starting point: it may improve the balance between reduced pop-in and visual stability.
A value of 5 can still be tested if severe LOD transitions remain, but it should not be treated as universally better. Do not recommend values above 5: the available community evidence does not establish a safe upper limit or predictable performance profile.

Performance and visual trade-offs
Retaining higher-detail geometry farther from the player can increase rendering and memory demands. Depending on the scene and hardware, the tweak may result in:
- Lower frame rates.
- Higher CPU or GPU load.
- Greater VRAM use.
- More stutter in dense areas or on systems already close to their limits.
- Foliage or tree glitches, including reported vibration at aggressive settings.
Consider your VRAM, texture-pool setting, resolution, upscaling mode, ray tracing or path tracing, and frame-generation settings before increasing the value. Community reports of tree and foliage problems are anecdotal, but they are a good reason to start at 3 and keep the backup file.

What to do if something goes wrong
Trees or foliage vibrate
Remove the command or change 5 to 3. If the problem remains, restore your backup configuration and adjust vegetation-related graphics settings before trying the tweak again. Player reports on Reddit describe this type of side effect with aggressive LOD changes.

The game becomes unstable or performance gets worse
Restore the backup file or delete the added line. Do not respond by increasing the value further. The tweak is optional and unofficial.
The command does nothing
- Confirm that you edited
%USERPROFILE%Saved GamesMachineGamesTheGreatCirclebaseTheGreatCircleConfig.cfg. - Check that the filename is not
TheGreatCircleConfig.cfg.txt. - Make sure the line is plain text and appears at the end of the file.
- Test the command in the console, if available.
- Remove the line and compare the same scene again.
You may be seeing texture streaming or another rendering issue rather than an LOD transition. If the file is missing, launch the game once and check again. Also consider cloud-save synchronization or launcher permissions, which can affect local file creation. If an update removes the line, compare your backup with the newer configuration and re-add only the required command rather than blindly overwriting the updated file.
Safer alternatives and expectations
Before editing a configuration file, try the game’s own graphics options. Adjusting texture, shadow, vegetation, ray-tracing, or related settings is safer and easier to undo. Keeping the game and graphics driver current is also worthwhile: official updates have addressed various PC issues involving VRAM behavior, upscalers, frame generation, path tracing, ray reconstruction, and level-load stutter. The official announcements for Update 8 and its hotfix do not document r_lodscale as an official fix or expose an equivalent LOD-distance option.
You do not need a mod manager for this change. It is one manually added configuration line, and guides suggesting unrelated commands such as setLoadDistance 1000 are not the documented fix for this game.
Is this an official fix?
No. r_lodscale 3 is a community-discovered configuration workaround. It can reduce short-distance geometry, foliage, and some shadow transitions, but it is not a guaranteed permanent solution and may be overwritten by an update or configuration rewrite. Start with 3, test the same scene, and revert it if visual glitches, crashes, or performance problems outweigh the improvement.
