In Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, the Sukhothai giant-snake encounter turns Indy’s familiar fear of snakes into something the player has to navigate. James Whitbrook’s December 10, 2024 Gizmodo/io9 feature calls it the game’s best moment, arguing that its tense movement and sound make Indy’s panic tangible. That ranking is Whitbrook’s critical judgment, not an official designation or measured consensus.
Why the jar test matters
In the game’s third act, Indy and Italian journalist Gina Lombardi travel to Thailand while pursuing Nazi archaeologist Emmerich Voss and the remaining artifacts connected to the Great Circle. In Sukhothai, they work with Pailin, leader of a local insurgent group, and her uncle Sunan.

Before the temple journey, Pailin and Sunan test Indy by asking him to reach into a jar said to manifest a person’s greatest fear. Indy expects snakes. Instead, the jar holds offal for soup stock. The joke appears to let him off easily, but it sets up the actual test: a giant snake guarding the temple.
How the Sukhothai snake sequence plays
Hide while the snake moves through the water
The encounter first makes survival a matter of moving between hiding places as the snake swims through submerged ruins. Rather than simply confronting the creature, Indy has to watch its movement and find opportunities to advance.

Wait for an opening to fight
Later, from a small ruin, Indy fights back with ancient spears. The sequence’s deliberate circling, waiting, and timing make the controls’ friction part of its tension: progress depends on patience and choosing when to act, rather than charging straight at the threat.
Why Whitbrook calls it the game’s best moment
Whitbrook’s case rests on the way sound and play work together. Indy’s labored breathing and muffled screams underwater, set against the snake’s hiss and clicks, keep his fear present even when the player is focused on movement or timing. The player does not just watch Indy recoil from snakes; the encounter asks them to manage the danger while hearing his panic.
Rank #2

- FORTUNE & GLORY, TRAPS & CHASES: Fortune & Glory cards assist a player in their quest. But watch out for booby traps and chases in the Traps & Chases cards! Both decks include quotes from the movies
That is the feature’s interpretation of the scene, not a confirmed statement of developer intent. Its strength, in Whitbrook’s view, comes from how the sequence makes a familiar character trait shape the player’s experience.
