infocardapi.dll is a genuine Microsoft component associated with InfoCard, later known as Windows CardSpace. If Windows 10 or Windows 11 reports that infocardapi.dll is missing, not found, corrupt, or could not be loaded, repair the legacy dependency or the program requesting it rather than downloading a loose DLL.
What this file actually does
InfoCard was Microsoft’s identity-selector technology. Windows CardSpace was included with .NET Framework 3.0, alongside Windows Communication Foundation, Windows Presentation Foundation, and Windows Workflow Foundation. .NET Framework 3.5 includes the .NET 2.0 and 3.0 layers that older software may still require.

Microsoft documented infocardapi.dll in %WINDIR%System32 and described its native GetToken API as an entry point for the InfoCard identity-selector system. The Microsoft InfoCard documentation also describes the managed Microsoft.Infocards.dll wrapper.

Windows CardSpace itself is discontinued. On current Windows versions, the practical issue is usually compatibility with an application built for the .NET 2.0–3.5 generation, a damaged Windows component, or an antivirus action.

Common wording includes “The program can’t start because infocardapi.dll is missing from your computer,” “The code execution cannot proceed because infocardapi.dll was not found,” and “infocardapi.dll could not be loaded or is corrupt.” The exact wording varies by application and Windows loader path.
Fix 1: Enable .NET Framework 3.5
This is the best first fix when the message appears while launching old software on Windows 8, Windows 10, or Windows 11.
- Press the Windows key.
- Search for Turn Windows features on or off.
- Open the matching Control Panel result.
- Select .NET Framework 3.5 (includes .NET 2.0 and 3.0).
- Leave the child options at their default settings unless the application documentation requires otherwise.
- Select OK.
- Choose Let Windows Update download the files when prompted.
- Restart Windows if requested.
- Launch the affected program again.
Microsoft’s official .NET Framework 3.5 installation instructions cover this feature path.
Installing .NET Framework 4.x does not always satisfy software built for .NET Framework 2.0, 3.0, or 3.5. These are separate compatibility layers, and several .NET Framework generations can coexist.
If Windows cannot download the feature, the component may need matching Windows installation media. Microsoft documents using the sourcessxs folder as an installation source in its deployment guidance for .NET Framework 3.5. Do not use an arbitrary copy of infocardapi.dll from another computer.
Fix 2: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC
Use this route if the file is missing from a Windows component, multiple programs are affected, or the problem began after an interrupted update or cleanup operation.

- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for DISM to finish. This can take time and may appear to pause.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart the computer.
- Test the affected application again.
DISM repairs the Windows component store that Windows uses as a source for protected-file repairs. SFC then checks protected system files and replaces damaged copies where possible. Microsoft explains the process in its System File Checker documentation and Windows image repair guidance.
If DISM reports that source files cannot be found, install pending Windows updates and restart. If the error remains, use matching Windows installation media as the repair source rather than copying a DLL manually.

Fix 3: Repair or reinstall the affected application
If only one program reports infocardapi.dll, the application may have an incomplete installation, an outdated installer, or files removed during an update.
Try the following in order.
Use the application’s repair option
- Open Settings with Windows + I.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Find the affected program.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair.
- Start the program again.
Some desktop applications instead provide their own Repair entry in Apps and Features or in the original installer. Games may provide Verify, Verify integrity, or Repair files in their official launcher.
Reinstall from the original source
If repair does not work:
- Uninstall the affected application from Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Restart Windows.
- Download the current installer from the application’s official publisher.
- Install it with an administrator account.
- Apply the program’s official updates.
- Test it before restoring optional plugins or modifications.
For a file associated with one application, reinstalling that application is more reliable than replacing a DLL in System32. Do not assume that reinstalling Visual C++ Redistributable will fix this error. That runtime is unrelated unless the specific program separately reports a Visual C++ dependency.
Fix 4: Check antivirus quarantine
Security software can remove a legitimate Windows file, a modified application file, or a dependency that the application needs. Do not label the file malware solely because it was quarantined.
For Microsoft Defender:
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Open the detection related to the missing file.
- Check the reported path, detection name, and action.
- Restore the file only if it is in the expected Windows location, is digitally signed by Microsoft, and the detection is plausibly a false positive.
- Run a current Defender scan before launching the application.
Microsoft documents the graphical recovery path and command-line recovery options in its quarantined-file restoration guidance.
If the file was inside an application folder, prefer repairing or reinstalling the application instead of restoring it blindly. If Defender continues to remove it, investigate the detection and contact the software publisher rather than repeatedly disabling protection.
Fix 5: Check the correct architecture
On 64-bit Windows, System32 contains native 64-bit system components, while SysWOW64 contains 32-bit system components. The names are confusing, but the distinction matters.
A 32-bit application may need a 32-bit dependency even when Windows itself is 64-bit. Do not copy a 64-bit infocardapi.dll into an application folder used by a 32-bit program, and do not copy files between System32 and SysWOW64 as a general repair.
To identify the application architecture, check its publisher documentation or inspect the executable’s properties with a suitable trusted diagnostic utility. The practical test is simpler: repair or reinstall the application using its current installer, then enable .NET Framework 3.5 at the Windows level.

Historical file indexes list multiple builds and architectures. A listed version or file size is not proof that it is the correct build for your Windows installation. Windows servicing should select the matching system component.

A failed servicing operation can leave Windows with incomplete component files.
- Open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install available updates.
- Restart when prompted.
- Run DISM and SFC again.
- Test the application.
If Windows Update itself reports errors, follow Microsoft’s Windows Update repair guidance. DISM may need matching installation media when Windows Update cannot supply repair files.
Do not register this DLL with regsvr32
Running this command is not a normal repair:
regsvr32 infocardapi.dll
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that export DllRegisterServer. Microsoft’s DllRegisterServer documentation describes that requirement.

InfoCard documentation presents infocardapi.dll as an API library, not as a self-registering COM server. If regsvr32 reports that the entry point is missing, it has not repaired anything. The correct response is to repair .NET Framework, Windows components, or the application that requested the DLL.
About driver updates
There is no demonstrated driver relationship for infocardapi.dll. Updating graphics, chipset, network, or storage drivers should not be your first response to this error.
If the same computer is also showing unrelated device failures, open Device Manager:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the relevant device category.
- Right-click a device with a warning icon.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
Avoid driver-update work when Device Manager shows no related problem. Avoid random DLL downloads
Do not download infocardapi.dll from a random DLL archive and place it in System32 or beside the program. That approach can introduce malware, use the wrong architecture, provide an incompatible build, and leave the actual missing dependency unrepaired.
Use Windows Features, Windows Update, DISM, SFC, the application’s official installer, and Microsoft’s documented recovery paths instead. Manual copying is appropriate only for controlled forensic comparison or recovery from a matching, trusted Windows image.
When the application is incompatible with modern Windows
If .NET Framework 3.5, DISM, SFC, antivirus checks, and application repair do not help, the program may depend on CardSpace behavior that current Windows no longer supports. Windows CardSpace is discontinued, so restoring one DLL cannot recreate the complete legacy platform.
Check whether the publisher offers a newer release. If not, use the program only in a properly isolated, supported older Windows environment where appropriate, or replace it with software that supports current Windows. Do not casually disable security features or use an old system for sensitive work.

Is infocardapi.dll a Windows file or an application file?
It is a Microsoft Windows/.NET-era component associated with InfoCard and Windows CardSpace. An application may be the program reporting the error, but that does not make the DLL a Visual C++ runtime or a normal game asset.
Should I install Visual C++ Redistributable?
Usually not for this file. Start with .NET Framework 3.5 and repair the affected application. Install Visual C++ only when the application separately documents or reports that runtime as missing.
Is the file supposed to be in System32 or SysWOW64?
Microsoft documented it in %WINDIR%System32. On 64-bit Windows, 32-bit and 64-bit components are handled differently, so do not infer the correct location by copying files between directories.
Can SFC always restore it?
No. SFC repairs protected Windows files when a suitable component source exists. It may not restore a discontinued feature or repair an application’s private copy.
Why does “specified module could not be found” appear when the file exists?
The Windows loader may be unable to find a dependency of infocardapi.dll. Repairing .NET Framework and the affected application is safer than replacing the visible file alone.
Does Windows 11 still include Windows CardSpace?
CardSpace is legacy and discontinued. Current Windows may provide .NET Framework 3.5 for compatibility, but that does not guarantee that every application built around CardSpace will work.
