The 60-second answer
infostor.dll is an application DLL associated with Crystal Enterprise, historically developed by Seagate Software and later connected with the Crystal Decisions, Business Objects, and SAP BusinessObjects product line. It is not a normal Windows component.

The safest repair is:
- Identify the program that is reporting the error.
- Repair or reinstall that exact program using its original installer.
- Match the product release, service pack, language, and architecture.
- Check whether antivirus software quarantined the file.
- Repair a missing dependency if the error says another DLL is missing.
- Use
regsvr32only when the installer specifically reports a registration failure. - Run DISM and SFC only as secondary Windows-integrity checks.
Do not download infostor.dll from a random DLL website or place an arbitrary copy in C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64.

- Crystal Enterprise
- Crystal Reports-related software
- BusinessObjects Enterprise
- SAP BusinessObjects BI client tools
- An OEM application that embeds Crystal Reports components
Older BusinessObjects installations may keep the file in a product directory such as win32_x86. Other releases can use separate architecture directories such as win64_x64. The correct location depends on the installed product and release.
It is not safe to assume that the file belongs in the Windows component store. It is also not safe to assume that every copy has the same version, size, or architecture.
The product history is complicated because Crystal Enterprise evolved from the earlier Seagate reporting and business-intelligence products. Later packaging and support moved through Crystal Decisions, Business Objects, and SAP BusinessObjects. For troubleshooting, the important fact is simpler: restore the parent reporting product, not the DLL in isolation.
First identify the calling program
Before changing files, find out which program is loading infostor.dll.
Check the error window
Look at the title bar and the text surrounding the error. Record:
- The name of the application that will not start
- The complete error message
- Whether the error appears during startup, installation, upgrade, or report opening
- Any product version or service-pack information
If the error appears while launching an older line-of-business program, the program may be an OEM application containing embedded Crystal Reports components. In that case, repair the OEM application instead of installing Crystal Reports separately.
Check the shortcut
- Right-click the program’s shortcut.
- Select Properties.
- On the Shortcut tab, read the Target field.
- Select Open File Location if available.
- Note the application directory and whether it is under
Program FilesorProgram Files (x86).
Do not delete or replace files in that directory yet. The path helps you select the correct installer and determine whether the application is likely 32-bit or 64-bit.
Search for existing copies
Use File Explorer to search the application’s installation directory for infostor.dll. If it exists, note its exact path. A file can be present while Windows still reports that the module could not be found because a dependent DLL is missing.
Do not treat a search result in System32, SysWOW64, a temporary folder, or a download directory as proof that the copy is appropriate.
Fix 1: Repair the parent Crystal or BusinessObjects installation
This is the most likely solution for a missing or damaged infostor.dll.
Use Windows installed-app repair
- Close the affected application.
- Press Windows + I to open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on Windows 10.
- Search for Crystal, BusinessObjects, SAP BusinessObjects, or the name of the OEM application.
- Select the three-dot menu beside the matching program.
- Choose Modify, Repair, or Advanced options, depending on what is available.
- Follow the installer prompts.
- Restart Windows.
- Start the original application again.
If there is no Repair option, use the product’s original installation media or a complete installer package supplied by your organization or software vendor. Run setup.exe with administrator privileges.
Use the original installation media
- Obtain the same product release and service-pack level originally deployed.
- Extract the complete installer to a local folder if it is supplied as a compressed package.
- Right-click
setup.exe. - Select Run as administrator.
- Choose Repair or Modify if the installer offers it.
- Keep the existing installation path unless your software administrator has a documented reason to change it.
- Complete the repair.
- Restart Windows and test the application.
Avoid combining files from different BusinessObjects releases. A newer infostor.dll beside older framework, authentication, or reporting components can create additional loading and version errors.
If the repair fails, uninstalling and reinstalling may be necessary. Preserve report templates, connection information, configuration files, and application data first. Use the same release, language, architecture, and service-pack level wherever possible.
How to tell whether this worked
The repair succeeded if:
- The application opens without the
infostor.dllmessage. - The file is restored inside the product’s own directory.
- The installer completes without registration or prerequisite errors.
- Reports or application functions that previously failed now open normally.
If the installer reports that InfoStor.dll failed to register, continue to the registration and dependency sections below instead of repeatedly copying the file.
Fix 2: Check whether a dependency is actually missing
The message “The specified module could not be found” does not always mean that infostor.dll itself is absent. Windows may be unable to load it because another native DLL that it requires is missing.

VCRUNTIME140.dllMSVCP*.dll- Another BusinessObjects component
- A runtime or framework file
Repair the runtime named by the error
- Write down the exact dependency named in the error.
- Check the Crystal, BusinessObjects, or OEM product documentation for its required runtime.
- Install the runtime from Microsoft or from the authenticated product installation package.
- Match the runtime architecture to the application. A 32-bit application may require the 32-bit runtime even on 64-bit Windows.
- Restart Windows.
- Launch the original application.
A Visual C++ runtime can be involved in some BusinessObjects installation failures, but installing the newest package is not a universal fix. Older applications may require a compatible legacy runtime, and multiple supported runtime versions can coexist.
Do not download individual runtime DLLs from a file-indexing site. Install the complete redistributable package from Microsoft or use the product vendor’s approved prerequisite package.
If the DLL is present but still will not load
A present file can still fail because of:
- A missing dependency
- Wrong 32-bit or 64-bit architecture
- Mixed files from different BusinessObjects releases
- Incorrect application search paths
- Insufficient permissions
- A damaged installation
Repair the parent product before attempting manual loader diagnostics. If your organization supports the application, provide the installer log and the full path to the existing file.
Fix 3: Check 32-bit and 64-bit compatibility
Do not judge architecture only by the operating system. A 64-bit version of Windows can run 32-bit reporting software, and that software still needs its 32-bit DLL chain.

Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Typical clues include:
Program Files (x86)usually indicates a 32-bit application.Program Filescommonly indicates a 64-bit application, though installers can choose other paths.- A product directory named
win32_x86indicates a 32-bit component set. - A directory named
win64_x64indicates a 64-bit component set.
To check the application architecture:
- Open the application’s installation folder.
- Right-click the main executable.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Details tab and record the product information.
- If the information is unclear, ask the software administrator or vendor for the supported architecture.
Keep the matching infostor.dll, dependencies, and related BusinessObjects components together. Do not copy a file from a 32-bit folder into a 64-bit folder, or the reverse.
Side-by-side BusinessObjects versions can also cause conflicts. If the error began after installing or upgrading another Crystal or BusinessObjects product, record every installed release before removing anything. Uninstalling the wrong client can break another application that depends on it.
Fix 4: Check antivirus quarantine
Security software may quarantine a legitimate application file after an update or a damaged installation.
Check Windows Security
- Open Start.
- Type Windows Security.
- Open it.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Look for an entry naming
infostor.dllor the affected application. - Do not restore the file immediately.
- Verify that the file belongs to the installed Crystal, BusinessObjects, or OEM product.
- Confirm the product source and installation path with your administrator.
- Restore it only when its origin is trusted and the application requires it.
- Repair or reinstall the parent product if the file is damaged or its origin is uncertain.
If antivirus software repeatedly removes the file, do not simply disable protection. Have the product package and file assessed by your security administrator, then reinstall from trusted media.
Fix 5: Use regsvr32 only for a confirmed registration failure
Most private application DLLs do not need manual registration. regsvr32 is appropriate only when:
- The installer explicitly reports that
InfoStor.dllfailed to register. - The product documentation requires registration.
- The file is the correct architecture.
- Its dependencies are installed.
- You are using the matching BusinessObjects release.
An SAP BusinessObjects installer can report a message similar to:
Rank #2
- STREAMLINED & INTUITIVE UI, DVD FORMAT | Intelligent desktop | Personalize your experience for simpler efficiency | Powerful security built-in and enabled.
- OEM IS TO BE INSTALLED ON A NEW PC with no prior version of Windows installed and cannot be transferred to another machine.
- OEM DOES NOT PROVIDE SUPPORT | To acquire product with Microsoft support, obtain the full packaged “Retail” version.
- PRODUCT SHIPS IN PLAIN ENVELOPE | Activation key is located under scratch-off area on label.
- GENUINE WINDOWS SOFTWARE IS BRANDED BY MIRCOSOFT ONLY.
Error: Module <SAP_BI_installDir>SAP BusinessObjects Enterprise XI 4.0win32_x86InfoStor.dll failed to register
If that is the message you have, first repair prerequisites and use the installer log. Many registration failures together often indicate a missing runtime, incorrect permissions, or an incomplete installation.
Register a confirmed 64-bit DLL
Open Start, type Command Prompt, right-click it, select Run as administrator, and run:
%SystemRoot%System32regsvr32.exe "C:pathtoinfostor.dll"
Replace the path with the exact path supplied by the matching installer. Do not guess the path.
Register a confirmed 32-bit DLL on 64-bit Windows
From an elevated Command Prompt, run:
%SystemRoot%SysWOW64regsvr32.exe "C:pathtoinfostor.dll"
The names are counterintuitive: System32 contains the 64-bit system tools on 64-bit Windows, while SysWOW64 contains the 32-bit versions.
A successful command displays a message that registration succeeded. Restart the application and test it.
If registration reports an architecture mismatch, missing entry point, missing dependency, or access error, stop repeating the command. Repair the correct product installation and use the installer log to identify the actual failing component.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Fix 6: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC
DISM and System File Checker repair protected Windows components. They generally do not restore a third-party Crystal or BusinessObjects DLL, so use them when several unrelated programs are failing or Windows itself appears damaged.
Run DISM first
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Enter:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for the command to finish.
- Restart Windows if requested.
Run SFC second
Open an elevated Command Prompt again and run:
sfc /scannow
Wait until verification reaches 100 percent, then restart Windows and test the application.
If SFC reports that it could not repair some files, run DISM again, restart, and repeat SFC once. If only the Crystal or BusinessObjects application still fails, return to repairing that application rather than treating infostor.dll as a Windows file.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Repeating SFC and DISM without knowing what changed can make troubleshooting slow and inconclusive. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for system problems and show what needs attention, while its repair functions are available with the full version; reinstalling the Crystal or BusinessObjects application remains the definitive fix when that product owns the DLL.
Fix 7: Update or reinstall related drivers only when evidence points there
A graphics, printer, or storage driver is not a verified direct source of infostor.dll. Do not reinstall drivers as the first response to this error.
Consider driver troubleshooting only if:
- The application crashes after a hardware or driver change.
- Other applications show related device errors.
- Device Manager reports a problem.
- The Crystal-based application communicates with a printer, scanner, database device, or specialized hardware.
Check Device Manager
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the category related to the failing workflow, such as Printers, Display adapters, or Storage controllers.
- Right-click the affected device.
- Select Properties.
- Read the Device status message on the General tab.
- Open the Driver tab and record the provider and date.
- Use Update driver only when an approved driver is available.
- If a recent update caused the problem, use Roll Back Driver when available.
- Restart Windows and test the application.
Do not remove a working driver just because infostor.dll is missing. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers and identify the relevant device, while driver installation through the full version is optional; it does not replace repairing the Crystal or BusinessObjects installation.
Fix 8: Check Windows Features only for a documented prerequisite
Windows Features do not normally restore infostor.dll, but an old reporting application may depend on a Windows component documented by its installer.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed

To inspect available features:
- Press Windows + R.
- Type:
optionalfeatures
- Press Enter.
- Review the feature list.
- Enable only the component named by the product documentation or installer.
- Select OK.
- Restart Windows if prompted.
Do not enable random legacy components to make the error disappear. If the installer requests a specific .NET Framework feature, use the exact version and source approved by your administrator.
What not to do
Avoid these common failed repairs:
- Downloading
infostor.dllfrom a random DLL website - Copying a DLL into
System32orSysWOW64 - Replacing a 32-bit file with a 64-bit file
- Registering every DLL in a product directory
- Mixing Crystal, XI, and SAP BusinessObjects releases
- Installing Visual C++ without checking the dependency named by the error
- Disabling antivirus protection permanently
- Using Windows Update as a substitute for repairing the application
- Reinstalling graphics or DirectX components without evidence of a related failure
A standalone DLL can have the wrong build, architecture, dependencies, or provenance. It can also hide the original damaged installation and create a second failure.
When System Restore is appropriate
Use System Restore only when:
- The program worked before a recent software change.
- A suitable restore point exists.
- You have preserved important application data.
- Repairing the parent application is unavailable or unsuccessful.
System Restore is a rollback option, not a replacement for the original Crystal or BusinessObjects installation media. After restoring, repair or update the parent application so the installation is consistent.
Information to send to support
If the repair still fails, provide:
- The complete error text
- The calling application name
- Product version and service-pack level
- The exact
infostor.dllpath - Windows 10 or Windows 11 version
- Whether the application is 32-bit or 64-bit
- Whether the file is present or quarantined
- The full installer log
- Any named dependency such as
VCRUNTIME140.dll - Whether the failure began after an upgrade, reinstall, antivirus event, or Windows change
For SAP BusinessObjects installations, inspect the product installer logs, including the InstallDatalogs area when present. Do not delete those logs before support reviews them.
FAQ
