“preminfo.dll was not found”: Which fix applies to you

- The error names 3ds Max or a path containing its installation folder: repair or reinstall that exact 3ds Max release.
- The error names Adobe Premiere, a Premiere plug-in, or a path under Adobe Premiere: reinstall the matching Premiere release and remove incompatible plug-ins.
- The message says “procedure entry point could not be located”: suspect a mismatched DLL, patch, or plug-in rather than a simply missing file.
- The message says “specified module could not be found,” but
preminfo.dllexists: another dependency may be missing. - Your antivirus recently detected or quarantined the file: verify the application installation, then restore or repair it only if the file came from legitimate installation media.
- The error started after moving the application folder: reinstall or restore the application to its original location.
- Other Windows programs also fail: investigate Windows component corruption with DISM and SFC. These commands do not normally restore an application-owned DLL.
Do not begin by copying preminfo.dll into C:WindowsSystem32 or downloading it from a random DLL website.
What preminfo.dll is
Public file metadata describes preminfo.dll as “MAX implementations of Premiere SDK.” It is associated with 3ds Max and publisher metadata identifies Discreet, a division of Autodesk, Inc. The file is a legacy 32-bit application component, not a Windows component.

That distinction matters:
- It is not part of Windows 10 or Windows 11.
- It is not a standard Microsoft Visual C++ runtime.
- It is not a DirectX, .NET, or Windows system DLL.
- It is not established as a normal
System32orSysWOW64file. - A modern 64-bit replacement is not interchangeable with the legacy 32-bit file.
The filename does not prove that 3ds Max is the affected program. Older Adobe Premiere installations also contained preminfo.dll, and old Premiere plug-ins could request it. The executable name and full path in the error message determine which repair applies.
Some public metadata reports a particular version and file size, but those values describe a reported build rather than every valid copy. Do not reject a legitimate installation solely because its file size or version differs from a database listing.
Identify the program requesting the DLL
Read the complete error instead of relying only on the filename.

Check the error path
Look for wording such as:
C:Program Files...preminfo.dll
The folder often identifies the owner. A path under an Autodesk or 3ds Max directory points toward 3ds Max. A path under an Adobe Premiere directory points toward Premiere or one of its plug-ins.
Also note the executable named in the dialog. If Windows displays the application name in the title bar or message, record it before closing the error.
Search the application folder
- Press Windows key + E.
- Open the folder where the affected application is installed.
- In the File Explorer search box, enter:

preminfo.dll
- If a copy appears, right-click it and select Properties.
- Check the Details tab for the file description and product information.
- Do not replace the file yet. An existing file may be the wrong version.
If the file is absent, that supports an incomplete or damaged installation. If it is present but the error remains, the problem may be a dependency, incorrect application path, incompatible plug-in, or mismatched DLL version.
Fix 1: Repair the owning application
Repairing the parent application is the safest first fix because it restores the correct file set rather than guessing which DLL to copy.
Repair 3ds Max
The exact labels vary by release, but supported Autodesk 3ds Max installations commonly provide a repair route through Control Panel:
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type:
text
appwiz.cpl
- Press Enter.
- Select 3ds Max in Programs and Features.
- Click Uninstall/Change.
- Choose Repair or Repair or Reinstall.
- Select Repair.
- Follow the installer prompts.
- Restart Windows.
- Launch 3ds Max again.
If there is no repair option, use the original installer or a valid Autodesk installation source for the same product release. Do not install a different major release and assume it will provide the files required by an older plug-in.
If repair fails:
- Back up projects, custom scripts, presets, and licensed plug-ins.
- Close all Autodesk programs.
- Return to Programs and Features.
- Select the affected 3ds Max release.
- Choose Uninstall.
- Restart Windows when prompted.
- Use Autodesk’s documented clean-uninstall process if remnants prevent installation.
- Install the same release from legitimate media or an authorized Autodesk deployment.
- Reinstall plug-ins one at a time and test after each installation.
A clean reinstall is particularly important when a failed uninstall left old DLLs in the application directory.
Repair or reinstall legacy Premiere
For Adobe Premiere 6, 6.5, or a similar discontinued release:

- Locate the original licensed installation media or an account entitlement that legitimately provides the installer.
- Back up projects and custom plug-ins.
- Uninstall the affected Premiere release from Settings > Apps > Installed apps, or from Control Panel > Programs and Features.
- Restart Windows.
- Install the exact original release.
- Apply only patches intended for that release.
- Start Premiere before reinstalling third-party effects or capture plug-ins.
- Add plug-ins one at a time and test Premiere after each addition.
Current Adobe download pages do not provide a general modern preminfo.dll runtime. If you do not have legitimate media or an entitlement for the discontinued software, do not obtain the DLL from an unofficial download page. Use a supported application or an appropriately isolated older Windows environment instead.
Fix 2: Match the DLL, application, and plug-in versions
A missing-file message and an entry-point message require different reasoning.
If the message says the file is missing
Examples include:
This application failed to start because preminfo.dll was not found.
or:
The program can’t start because preminfo.dll is missing from your computer.
Repair or reinstall the application that requested the file. Also check:
- Whether the application folder was moved.
- Whether the file was deleted by cleanup software.
- Whether antivirus software quarantined it.
- Whether a recent patch failed.
- Whether the application is launching from an old shortcut that points to a different installation.
If the message says the procedure entry point is missing
An error such as:
The procedure entry point ... could not be located in the dynamic link library preminfo.dll.
usually indicates that the program loaded a DLL, but the DLL does not match the application or plug-in that called it.

- Uninstall the newest third-party plug-in, effect, codec, or capture component.
- Restart Windows.
- Launch the main application.
- If the application works, obtain a plug-in version specifically intended for that application release.
- If the error remains, repair or reinstall the main application.
- Reinstall the plug-in only after the base application starts correctly.
Do not solve an entry-point error by downloading another copy of the same filename. Two files with the same name can expose different functions and still be incompatible.
If the message says “specified module could not be found”
This wording can mean that preminfo.dll exists but one of its dependencies is missing. Windows may report the failure against the DLL that was being loaded, even when a different library is the actual missing component.
Repair the owning application first. If that does not help, remove recently installed plug-ins and consult the application’s installation logs. Reinstalling Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET is not a verified direct fix for preminfo.dll; install such runtimes only when the error specifically identifies one as missing.
Fix 3: Check antivirus quarantine safely
Security software may remove or quarantine an old DLL because legacy applications often contain outdated code or use unusual loading behavior.

- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Click Protection history.
- Look for an event involving
preminfo.dllor the affected application. - Confirm that the detected path belongs to the legitimate application folder.
- Do not restore the file if it came from an unknown download or an unexpected directory.
- If the file came from legitimate installation media, use the application’s Repair option first.
- If restoration is necessary, restore only after validating the installer and then add the application folder to an exclusion only if you understand the security risk.
Do not permanently disable antivirus protection to force an untrusted DLL into the application directory. Reinstalling the complete application gives Windows security software more context than manually adding a loose file.
Fix 4: Account for 32-bit software on 64-bit Windows
Legacy 3ds Max and Premiere releases were designed for older Windows environments. A 32-bit application can run on 64-bit Windows through Windows’ compatibility layer, but its application DLLs still need to match the 32-bit program.
Do not:
- Put a 64-bit DLL beside a 32-bit executable.
- Copy a random 32-bit DLL into
System32. - Copy multiple versions into both
System32andSysWOW64. - Mix files from different 3ds Max or Premiere releases.
- Assume that compatibility mode repairs missing application files.

- Right-click the application shortcut.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Compatibility tab.
- Select Run this program in compatibility mode for.
- Choose an appropriate older Windows version only if the application documentation or testing supports it.
- Select Apply, then OK.
- Test the application.
Compatibility mode can help with older installers or operating-system behavior, but it cannot correct a missing or incompatible DLL.

A display, capture, audio, or video plug-in can fail while loading an old application. In that situation, the related hardware driver may need attention, but a driver update does not directly install preminfo.dll.
To check a device driver:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the relevant category, such as Display adapters, Sound, video and game controllers, or Imaging devices.
- Right-click the device.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Record the provider and version.
- Use Update Driver only with a driver intended for that exact device and Windows installation.
- Restart Windows and test the application.
Hunting through many driver packages and determining which version matches old capture or video hardware can be tedious. If Device Manager shows no warning icon and the error names only preminfo.dll, focus on repairing the application rather than replacing unrelated drivers.
Fix 6: Use Windows repair commands only for broader corruption
preminfo.dll is not normally protected by Windows Resource Protection, so SFC is not expected to reconstruct it. Use DISM and SFC when other Windows components are also failing, Windows features are damaged, or multiple unrelated applications report system-file errors.

- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:

DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for the command to finish.
Run SFC
After DISM completes, run:
sfc /scannow
Wait until verification reaches 100 percent. Restart Windows and test the affected program.
DISM repairs the Windows component store. SFC checks protected Windows system files. Neither command replaces the need to repair 3ds Max, Premiere, or an associated plug-in.
Repeatedly running these commands without knowing what changed can make troubleshooting harder. Why regsvr32 usually does not help
Do not register preminfo.dll merely because its name ends in .dll.
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that provide a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer, commonly used by certain ActiveX or OLE components. An application-support DLL is not automatically self-registering.
Running commands such as these is therefore not a normal repair:
regsvr32 preminfo.dll
or:
regsvr32 C:WindowsSystem32preminfo.dll
If the DLL does not expose the required registration function, registration will fail. If it does, registering a file copied from an unofficial source still does not correct a version mismatch or missing dependency. Follow the owning application’s installer process instead.

Fix 7: Try System Restore only after a recent change
System Restore can help if the application worked immediately before a failed patch, plug-in installation, or system change and a suitable restore point exists.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type:
text
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select an appropriate restore point created before the failure.
- Review the affected programs.
- Start the restore.
- Restart Windows when prompted.
- Test the application.
System Restore is a fallback. It does not replace a clean reinstall when the application files are damaged or the wrong plug-in remains installed.
Avoid unsafe DLL download fixes
Downloading preminfo.dll from a random DLL website creates several risks:
- The file may contain malware.
- It may belong to a different application release.
- It may have the wrong 32-bit or 64-bit architecture.
- It may be modified or incomplete.
- It may omit other dependencies.
- It may conceal the real cause, such as a broken plug-in or incomplete installation.
The safe sources are the original licensed application media, a legitimate Autodesk deployment for the matching 3ds Max release, or legitimate Adobe media or entitlement for the matching Premiere release. There is no general Microsoft package that installs this application DLL.

Prevention after the repair
After the application starts successfully:
- Keep a backup of the original installer and product documentation.
- Record the exact application release and installed plug-in versions.
- Do not mix plug-ins between major application releases.
- Avoid moving the application folder manually.
- Check antivirus quarantine before deleting application files.
- Create a restore point before applying old patches.
- Test the base application before reinstalling optional plug-ins.
- Keep legacy software isolated when modern Windows compatibility is unreliable.
- Prefer a supported application release when the old program cannot run reliably.
If the error returns after a complete reinstall, remove third-party plug-ins, inspect antivirus logs, verify file permissions, and test the application from a clean Windows profile. If the original software is discontinued and cannot be legitimately restored, a supported replacement or an appropriately isolated older Windows environment may be the only practical solution.

Is preminfo.dll part of Windows?
No. It is a legacy application DLL associated with old 3ds Max installations and also documented in historical Adobe Premiere installations.
Is preminfo.dll exclusively a 3ds Max file?

Why does Windows say the specified module cannot be found when the DLL is present?
The DLL may depend on another library that is missing, or the application may be loading an incompatible version. Repair the application and remove recently installed plug-ins.
Why does the error mention a procedure entry point?
That usually indicates a version mismatch between the DLL, the application, and a plug-in. Reinstall matching versions instead of downloading another file with the same name.
Can SFC restore preminfo.dll?
Normally no. SFC repairs protected Windows system files, while preminfo.dll belongs to third-party legacy software.

What if I no longer have the original installer?
