“The program can’t start because inpout32.dll is missing from your computer. Try reinstalling the program to fix this problem.”
You may also see “inpout32.dll was not found,” “The specified module could not be found,” or “inpout32.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.” inpout32.dll is not a Windows system file. It is part of the InpOut32 third-party DLL-and-driver package used by older hardware-access applications.

Which fix applies to you
Use the first matching situation:
- The error names an older hardware utility, LCD display program, industrial tool, or custom application: repair or reinstall that application first.
- The file disappeared after antivirus activity: check Windows Security Protection history before downloading anything.
- The program is 32-bit on 64-bit Windows: it normally needs
InpOut32.dll, not the x64 DLL. - The program is a native 64-bit application: it normally needs
InpOutx64.dll. - The DLL is present but the program still fails: investigate the driver, elevation, architecture, or a missing dependency.
- The error appeared after copying an old application to a new PC: reinstall the application and its driver package rather than copying only the DLL.
- Windows itself seems damaged: run DISM and SFC, but do not expect them to recreate this third-party file.
InpOut32 provides user-mode access to hardware I/O ports, including legacy parallel- and serial-port hardware. Its package can include a kernel driver, so restoring a DLL alone may not restore the application.
Fix 1: Identify and repair the application that needs the DLL
The filename alone cannot identify the exact program, version, or package that belongs on your computer. Start with the error window, application shortcut, Start menu entry, or the program you launched immediately before the message appeared.

Repair the installed application
- Press Windows key + I to open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on Windows 10.
- Search for the hardware utility or older program that produced the error.
- Select its three-dot menu, then choose Advanced options if available.
- Select Repair and wait for Windows to finish.
- Start the application again.
If there is no Repair option:
- Return to the installed-app list.
- Select the application.
- Choose Uninstall, but preserve configuration or data if the uninstaller offers that choice.
- Restart Windows.
- Reinstall the program using its original installer or the current installer supplied by its developer.
- Start it once with Run as administrator if its documentation says that the driver is installed on first use.
A successful repair normally lets the application open without the missing-DLL dialog. If the dialog changes to a driver or hardware error, the DLL is probably being found and the remaining problem is the driver or the physical device.
Restore the application’s private DLL
InpOut32 is normally installed beside the application executable, not globally in C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64.

- Close the application.
- Open the folder containing the program’s executable. You can usually reach it by right-clicking the application shortcut and selecting Open file location.
- Restore the vendor-supplied DLL to that folder.
- Do not rename
InpOutx64.dlltoInpOut32.dll. - Start the application again.
Windows normally checks the application directory during DLL loading, which is why application-local placement is preferable to copying a private DLL into a system directory.
Fix 2: Check Windows Security quarantine
Security software may quarantine a legacy driver-bearing package. That does not automatically mean the file is malicious, but it does mean you should verify its source before restoring it.
- Open Start and type Windows Security.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review entries matching the application, InpOut32 package, or the date when the error began.
- Expand an entry to view its path and detection details.
- Restore or allow the file only if it came from the original application vendor or the official InpOut32 project package and you have independently confirmed that provenance.
Microsoft warns that allowing a genuine threat can expose the device. If the source is uncertain, leave the file quarantined, run a full scan, and reinstall the parent application from its official installer instead.
If the application works immediately after a verified restoration, add an exclusion only according to your organization’s security policy. A broad exclusion for the entire Windows directory is not appropriate.

Fix 3: Match the DLL to the application architecture
The operating system’s architecture is not the deciding factor. The application’s architecture is.
- A 32-bit application normally uses
InpOut32.dll. It can run on 64-bit Windows through WOW64. - A native 64-bit application normally uses
InpOutx64.dll. - A 32-bit DLL is not made compatible with a 64-bit application by placing it in
System32. - Copying both DLLs into random folders can create version conflicts and make troubleshooting harder.
Check the application developer’s documentation or package contents to determine which build it expects. If you still have the original installer, run that installer rather than selecting a DLL manually.
If the application is old and was copied from another PC, reinstall the same application release into a clean folder. The copied executable may depend on a driver, runtime, configuration file, or registry setting that was not copied with it.
Fix 4: Install or repair the InpOut32 driver
The InpOut32 package includes driver components and may require administrator elevation the first time it is used. A missing or blocked driver can produce a failure even when InpOut32.dll is visibly present.

- Close the affected application.
- Obtain the InpOut32 package from the original application vendor or the official Highrez InpOut32 project source.
- Extract or install the package according to its included instructions.
- Right-click the package’s driver installer, commonly named
InstallDriver.exe, and select Run as administrator. - Approve the User Account Control prompt if the package is verified.
- Restart Windows if the installer requests it.
- Launch the application and test the hardware function.
If the installer shows a side-by-side error, the legacy installer may require the Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 SP1 runtime referenced in the package documentation. Install the correct Microsoft runtime from an official Microsoft source, restart Windows, and run the driver installer again. This runtime issue specifically concerns the legacy installer and is not a universal fix for every missing-DLL message.
If Windows blocks the driver, do not disable security protections casually. Check the application vendor’s current guidance, the package signature, and Event Viewer for the exact driver error. Modern Windows versions may reject legacy drivers because of signature or compatibility requirements, and current Windows 11 operation for this legacy project has not been verified by its maintainer.
When manually checking hardware drivers:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the category related to the attached hardware, such as Ports (COM & LPT).
- Right-click the device and select Properties.
- Open the General tab and read Device status.
- Open the Driver tab to view the provider, date, and version.
- Use Update Driver only with a driver supplied by the hardware vendor, or uninstall the device and reinstall it using the vendor’s package.
Hunting through several legacy driver versions and determining which device entry is stale can be time-consuming. Fix 5: Investigate a missing dependency or side-by-side failure
“The specified module could not be found” does not always mean that inpout32.dll itself is absent. Windows may be unable to load a dependency, driver, or runtime required by the DLL.

If the error appears while launching the driver installer:
- Note whether it says side-by-side, manifest, or activation context.
- Install the Microsoft Visual C++ runtime required by the package documentation.
- Restart Windows.
- Run the installer again as administrator.
Do not install every Visual C++ redistributable you can find. Use the architecture and release specified by the application or package documentation.
You can also inspect application failures in Event Viewer:
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
eventvwr.mscand press Enter. - Expand Windows Logs.
- Select Application.
- Look for an error at the time of the failed launch.
- Record the Faulting application name, Faulting module name, and exception details.
If another DLL is named as the faulting module, repair that dependency through the parent application’s installer rather than replacing files from an unrelated source.

Fix 6: Repair Windows components when other programs are failing
DISM and SFC repair Windows components. They do not normally restore inpout32.dll, because this is not a protected Windows component. Use them when multiple unrelated applications or Windows features are also malfunctioning.
Run DISM
- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for the operation to complete.
- Restart Windows.
Run System File Checker
Open an elevated Command Prompt again and run:
sfc /scannow
Wait until verification reaches 100 percent, then restart Windows and test the application.
If DISM reports that it could not repair the image, install pending updates and run the command again. Do not interpret a successful SFC result as proof that inpout32.dll has been restored.

Repeating SFC and DISM without knowing what changed can leave you guessing about the actual cause. InpOut32 is not installed by turning on a generic Windows feature. However, an older application may separately require a legacy .NET component.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
optionalfeaturesand press Enter. - Review .NET Framework entries only if the application’s documentation requires them.
- Select the required feature.
- Select OK and allow Windows to apply the change.
- Restart if prompted.
Do not enable unrelated legacy components as a substitute for reinstalling the application or driver.

Do not use random DLL download sites
An isolated download may contain malware, the wrong build, the wrong architecture, or a modified driver package. It may also place a file in the wrong directory while leaving the application’s driver and dependencies missing.
Use the original application vendor’s installer or the official InpOut32 project package. Verify the package’s provenance, digital signature, and available hash information, then scan it before installation.

Those folders are not universal storage locations for private application DLLs. Copying a version there can affect other programs and may cause conflicts. Keep the DLL beside the executable that was built to use it.
Do not register it with regsvr32
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. InpOut32 is normally a hardware-access DLL, not a COM or ActiveX server. Running:
regsvr32 inpout32.dll
will commonly produce an error stating that DllRegisterServer was not found. It does not install the InpOut32 driver and is not the normal repair method.

Last-resort recovery
If the error began immediately after an application, driver, or cleanup change:
- Open Start and search for Create a restore point.
- Open it and select System Restore.
- Choose a restore point from before the change.
- Review the affected programs and drivers.
- Start the restoration and restart Windows.
System Restore rolls back system settings, files, and installed programs while preserving personal files. It is a fallback, not a method for obtaining a third-party DLL.
If the program still fails, collect the application name and version, Windows architecture, exact error text, Event Viewer details, antivirus action, and driver status. Give that information to the application vendor. The exact DLL build and driver package cannot be determined from inpout32.dll alone.
Prevent the error from returning
- Keep the application’s original installer and driver package with its deployment records.
- Do not replace a private DLL during routine cleanup.
- Check Protection history before manually restoring quarantined legacy software.
- Keep the DLL beside the application executable.
- Document whether the application is 32-bit or native 64-bit.
- Do not migrate the program by copying only its executable folder unless the vendor confirms that method.
- Test legacy hardware applications after Windows updates and security-policy changes.
- Keep unsupported InpOut32 deployments isolated from systems that handle sensitive work where possible.

Is inpout32.dll part of Windows?
No. It belongs to the third-party InpOut32 project and is normally installed for a specific hardware-access application.
Can I download just inpout32.dll?
Avoid isolated downloads. Restore it through the application’s official installer or the official InpOut32 package, because the matching driver and dependencies may also be required.
Will a 32-bit DLL work on 64-bit Windows?
