The “instead of the Switch 2” joke captured the timing and audience expectations—not Nintendo’s product strategy. Alarmo does not connect to Nintendo Switch or Switch 2, and Nintendo later released Switch 2 on June 5, 2025.

What is Nintendo Alarmo?
Alarmo is a dedicated, Nintendo-branded alarm clock rather than a Switch accessory, companion display, or game console. It is designed for morning alarms, motion-based snoozing and dismissal, bedtime “sleepy sounds,” themed hourly chimes, and records showing how much the user moved during sleep.
Nintendo’s U.S. announcement gave Alarmo a suggested price of $99.99; the same official page listed a regular price of $109.99. Pricing, stock, and availability can vary by region and date, so buyers should check Nintendo’s current official product page.

- Make waking up fun with Nintendo Sound Clock: Alarmo
Alarmo is best understood as Nintendo hardware-as-character merchandise with a genuine functional hook. Its premium is mainly for licensed sound design, themed presentation, physical design, and an unusual way to interact with an alarm.
How the motion alarm works
Alarmo uses a motion sensor to detect movement near the bed. In its motion-sensing modes, the user can snooze by moving instead of pressing a button, and the alarm is intended to stop after the user gets out of bed.
That behavior is why calling it “stressful” is fair as an editorial description, although it is not Nintendo’s official product category. In Steady Mode, the alarm becomes more intense the longer the user remains in bed. Gentle Mode keeps the intensity more consistent, making it the better choice for people who dislike an escalating wake-up.

Button Mode disables the motion-sensing features and provides a more conventional physical-control experience. If motion detection does not behave as expected, the dial can be pressed to stop the alarm manually.
Which Nintendo games are included?
At launch, Nintendo announced 35 scenes inspired by five games:
- Super Mario Odyssey
- The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
- Splatoon 3
- Pikmin 4
- Ring Fit Adventure
Nintendo also announced free downloadable scenes from Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and Animal Crossing: New Horizons. Online additions require a linked Nintendo Account and internet access. Nintendo’s regional Alarmo information later listed content connected to Kirby and the Forgotten Land and Super Mario Bros. Wonder, including Nintendo Switch 2 Edition-related content. The launch figure should therefore not be treated as the complete current scene count.

- NEVER OVERSLEEP AGAIN — ASCENDING LOUD ALARM - Alarm begins gently and increases in volume to reliably wake heavy sleepers without sudden shock. Designed for consistent, confident wake-ups every morning.
- LARGE EASY-TO-READ RED LED DISPLAY - Clear bright numbers are visible across the room day or night. Perfect bedside clock for adults, seniors, kids, dorm rooms, and anyone who wants instant time visibility without glasses.
- EASY-SET DESIGN — NO CONFUSING MENUS - Simple controls make setting the time and alarm fast and frustration-free. Ideal for seniors, children, or anyone tired of complicated modern clocks.
- DUAL ALARMS FOR WEEKDAY & WEEKEND ROUTINES - Set two separate alarms without resetting daily schedules. Great for couples, workdays vs weekends, or different wake-up times.
- RELIABLE WITH BATTERY BACKUP PROTECTION - Plug-in powered for dependable performance with battery backup to maintain settings during power outages so your alarm is always ready when you need it. (Requires 2x AA batteries, sold separately)
The sound effects are the product’s central appeal. Someone who wants to wake up to familiar Nintendo music and characters may find the experience charming; someone who simply needs a reliable clock may see little reason to pay the Nintendo premium.
Why fans expected Switch 2 news
By October 2024, speculation about Nintendo’s next console had made any surprise announcement feel like a possible Switch successor reveal. Instead, Nintendo unveiled an alarm clock. That mismatch made Alarmo seem like a punchline, especially because its escalating Steady Mode could make an already unwelcome morning more insistent.
But Alarmo was not announced as a substitute for Switch 2. Nintendo’s support FAQ says the clock is standalone and does not interact with either Nintendo Switch or its successor. Nintendo’s corporate materials identify Switch 2 as the Switch successor and give its release date as June 5, 2025.
What Alarmo does—and does not—track
Alarmo can record how much the user moves during sleep. That is movement data, not medical-grade sleep tracking. It should not be treated as a device that measures sleep stages, diagnoses sleep problems, or provides comprehensive health insights. A wearable or medical device is a better fit for those purposes.
Practical limitations
Nintendo says Alarmo supports standard bed sizes from Twin through King, but the room setup still matters. A pet, electric fan, or another moving object near the sensor can confuse the system. A shared bed can also complicate detection because the clock does not independently identify which sleeper moved.

Button Mode offers a conventional fallback, and the dial can be used manually if the alarm continues after the user gets up.

Alarmo requires a power connection. Nintendo’s usage manual specifies USB power of 5 V, 1.5 A, and 7.5 W and identifies Nintendo Switch AC Adapter model HAC-002 as compatible, sold separately. The manual also identifies a non-replaceable CR2032 button battery and warns that the product should not be used within six inches of a pacemaker. That safety warning should be followed as written and discussed with an appropriate medical professional when relevant.

A Nintendo Account and internet access are required for online features and downloadable scenes. Some functions require software updates. Paid Nintendo Switch Online membership was part of the initial U.S. and Canada early-access purchase arrangement, but Nintendo’s FAQ says a membership was no longer required to purchase Alarmo as of February 14, 2025.
The launch feature set is not necessarily the current one. Nintendo’s update history lists version 4.0.0 as released on May 18, 2026. Buyers should check that page and the current regional product information for the latest modes, scenes, and requirements.

Who should buy Alarmo?
Alarmo makes sense if you:
- strongly value Nintendo music, characters, or collectible hardware;
- want a dedicated physical alarm instead of relying on a phone;
- enjoy gamified or interactive routines;
- sleep alone or have a relatively stable sensor environment; and
- accept paying roughly $100 or more for themed design and novelty.
It is a poor fit if you expect Switch or Switch 2 integration, comprehensive sleep analytics, voice control, smart-home features, music streaming, multiple advanced alarms, or guaranteed detection. Pets, fans, shared beds, and nearby moving objects are meaningful drawbacks.
A basic digital clock is cheaper and simpler. A smart speaker or display is better for voice routines and home control. A wearable is better for sleep metrics and vibration-based waking, while a sunrise alarm is better for people who prefer light over an increasingly intense sound.
