No: 1666: Amsterdam is not an Assassin’s Creed sequel. It is Patrice Désilets and Panache Digital Games’ own fantasy action-adventure, with creative roots in an earlier project conceived after Désilets worked on Assassin’s Creed. Its idea dates to 2011, but Panache restarted production in 2020. The game entered PC Early Access on Steam in August 2026, according to TechRadar; that is the status reported as of October 4, 2026.
Is 1666: Amsterdam a sequel to Assassin’s Creed?
No. The game is a new IP, not a continuation of Ubisoft’s Assassin’s Creed story or a franchise entry. The connection is Désilets’ creative history and the earlier project’s historic-city adventure premise. TechRadar describes the original conception as a spiritual successor to Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood, while GameSpot reported in 2013 that Désilets called 1666 a new IP. Désilets later made the distinction explicit: “it is a fantasy game inside an historical period.” GameSpot; Respec.
That distinction matters because the title’s long association with Désilets and Assassin’s Creed can make it sound like a lost installment. Its lineage is a useful way to understand the project’s origins, not its franchise status.
Why has the game taken so long?
The “15 years” framing counts from the idea Désilets says he had in 2011 to the 2026 Early Access release. It does not mean Panache spent 15 uninterrupted years producing the current version. Désilets told Respec in September 2026, “It’s been six years in the in the making at Panache with the team,” referring to the studio’s restart in 2020. These figures describe different stages: the life of the concept and the current team’s production period.

From an Amsterdam inscription to a THQ project
Désilets has said a visit to Amsterdam in 2011 sparked the idea. He saw a building inscription reading “Anno 1666” and imagined a game about the Devil set in the city. At THQ Montreal, the project was developed as a new IP; in a 2013 account, Désilets said the first year went into assembling a team, studying the period, and creating the property. GameSpot.
THQ’s collapse and the rights interruption
THQ went bankrupt in 2013, and Ubisoft acquired the studio and its assets. The project stalled, and Désilets subsequently left Ubisoft. He says he recovered the rights in 2016. The interruption helps explain why the early concept and today’s game are separated by such a long span; it was not a continuous production schedule. Respec; TechRadar.

Panache’s 2020 restart and redesign
Panache resumed work in January 2020 and substantially rewrote the concept. The Devil-centered pitch gave way to a witch-led fantasy with a dual timeline. That makes the current game a reworked descendant of the original idea, rather than simply the 2013 project picking up where it stopped. Désilets called the present version “a personal story” in his Respec interview.
What is 1666: Amsterdam about?
The current game is a fantasy action-adventure that connects 1666 with 1999, with an additional library layer in its structure. Witch Noa is central to the 1666 story; a cat and the human character Aaron help link the timelines. Respec reports that Early Access is organized into “Esbats,” described in the interview as full-moon episodes. Respec.

Désilets describes Noa as a city witch who can fly, possess people, and use magic. The game’s design brings together traversal, investigation, stealth, combat, and supernatural abilities. He has also described the abilities as something players can reshuffle after failure, changing their approach on another attempt; the cat can be controlled as a scout and has its own traversal role. Those are developer descriptions of the design, not a guarantee of how every system feels in play.

It is a fantasy set in a historical period, not a strict historical simulation. Désilets says the team researched witches and visited Amsterdam to understand the city’s character and architecture, but the magic and parts of the setting are invented. The studio created a street for gameplay, and the witch hunt depicted in 1666 is fictionalized.

Wccftech quotes Désilets saying the Netherlands’ last witch-hunt trial was in 1608. That is his historical framing in the interview, rather than an independently established conclusion in this article. Wccftech.
Where can you play it, and what is confirmed about the roadmap?
As of October 4, 2026, the reported release is PC Early Access on Steam. TechRadar places the Early Access entry in August 2026, and Wccftech reported that the PC build had launched by early September. Check the Steam listing for current availability and platform details; the cited reporting establishes the PC Early Access release, not a console launch.
