You do not need to buy a champion or pay a recurring pass to access the fighting game under Riot’s 2026 transition plan. The important qualification is that 2XKO’s monetization changed on August 20, 2026: KO Point purchases were disabled, Patch 1.3.1 removed the previous progression systems, and Riot unlocked every champion for all players.
You can still spend money on optional digital cosmetics. Riot’s support FAQ lists an Ultimate Bundle at $39.99, £33.99 or €39.99, although its contents and price are time-sensitive and should be checked in the live store. Riot says online servers will remain available beyond 2026, while active development is scheduled to end in December 2026.

What “free to play” means in 2XKO
Free-to-play access covers the game itself rather than every optional item. Riot says 2XKO remains free to download on PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. There is no entry price stated for the digital download, and the current transition does not require a purchase to play matches, use the core fighting systems or select from the champion roster.
Recommended Free Tools
The model is especially straightforward after Patch 1.3.1. Riot’s support FAQ says all champions are unlocked for all players, so gameplay characters are no longer a purchase decision. The same update removes several systems that previously connected progression and spending: KO Points, Champion Tokens, Battle Passes, seasons and Ranked. In practical terms, a new player can start without budgeting for a character unlock, seasonal pass or premium currency.

Platforms and ongoing access
- PC: free download and online play remain available.
- PlayStation 5: free download remains available.
- Xbox Series X|S: free download remains available.
- Online service: Riot says servers will remain online beyond 2026.
- Offline play: Riot says the transition does not affect offline play.
“Free” does not mean that the project will receive new content indefinitely. Riot’s August 2026 announcement says active development is scheduled to end in December 2026. The company plans content and feature improvements, plus Lux and Samira, through the rest of 2026, followed by a final bug-fix pass in December. Riot describes this as its current plan and notes that plans can change; it does not announce future patches after the evergreen transition.
What changed on August 20, 2026
August 20, 2026 is the key date for understanding current spending. Riot disabled the ability to purchase KO Points on that date. It also set that date as the cutoff for certain eligible KO Point and Starter Edition refunds, subject to platform and regional rules.
Patch 1.3.1 then changed the in-game economy. The support FAQ identifies the following removals:
| System | Current status after Patch 1.3.1 |
|---|---|
| KO Points | Removed; new purchases were disabled August 20, 2026 |
| Champion Tokens | Removed |
| Battle Passes | Removed |
| Seasons | Removed |
| Ranked | Removed |
| Champions | Unlocked for all players |
| Credits | Still usable for certain cosmetic and profile items |
This means older guides that describe buying KO Points, progressing through a Battle Pass or earning Champion Tokens are historical explanations, not instructions for the current version. A page written before the 2026 transition can accurately describe the original plan while still being wrong about what you can buy today.

What can you still buy?
Riot says Credits remain usable for a limited selection of non-gameplay items. The support FAQ specifically names some avatar and profile items, stages and selected chromas. These are personalization options; they do not unlock a stronger fighter or a required competitive function. The FAQ does not establish that every cosmetic is individually available for Credits, so availability should be checked item by item in the current store.
The Ultimate Bundle
The principal paid option described in Riot’s current FAQ is the Ultimate Bundle. Riot says it includes nearly all released finishers, skins, skin chromas and taunts for every champion available up to and including Lux and Samira after Samira’s release. Riot lists the following regional prices:
| Region/currency | Listed price | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| United States | $39.99 | Digital cosmetics bundle; listed by Riot’s 2026 support FAQ |
| United Kingdom | £33.99 | Digital cosmetics bundle; listed by Riot’s 2026 support FAQ |
| Euro pricing | €39.99 | Digital cosmetics bundle; listed by Riot’s 2026 support FAQ |
The wording “nearly all” matters. Riot said the bundle would be updated in October with remaining skins and cosmetics, so the exact collection depends on when you look and how the live store defines included items. Prices and contents can change; confirm both before paying. The bundle is optional and has no stated effect on access to champions or matches.

No. Riot’s Patch 1.3.1 FAQ says all champions are unlocked for all players. That includes the roster available at the time of the transition and the planned additions Lux and Samira once they release. You therefore do not need KO Points, Champion Tokens, Credits or the Ultimate Bundle to select a champion.

This is different from the original monetization plan. Earlier Riot material described multiple routes to new champions, including Champion Tokens earned through tutorials or included in Starter Editions, alongside premium KO Point purchases. Those routes no longer describe the live system after the 2026 transition.
How 2XKO’s original monetization worked
The earlier design helps explain why old screenshots and guides may mention several currencies. Riot’s progression explainer described three:
- Credits: an earnable currency from missions, tutorials, Combo Trials and matches. Credits could be used for certain cosmetics.
- Champion Tokens: obtainable through tutorials or included with Starter Editions under the earlier plan.
- KO Points: premium currency bought with real money and used for selected purchases.
The original plan also included a free Battle Pass track and a paid Battle Pass track, paid bundles and several ways to unlock new champions. Personalization covered skins, chromas, stages, avatar accessories, stickers and emotes, taunts, finishers, player cards and titles. These details are useful historical context, but Riot’s 2026 transition supersedes them: KO Points, Champion Tokens, Battle Passes and seasons are removed, Ranked is removed, and champions are unlocked.
What will the game cost you in practice?
There are three realistic spending levels under the current plan:
Rank #4
- Multi-Platform PC Gaming Controller: Working with Switch, PC, Android, and iOS devices via Bluetooth, wired, and wireless dongle connections.
- Hall Effect Joysticks: Delivering enhanced recentering performance for smoother control and superior anti-drift capability. Plus, with anti-friction rings.
- 2-Way Trigger Lock: With trigger stops, gamers can toggle between short and long pull positions. Additionally, gamers can activate hair trigger mode by pressing M+LT/RT (triggers must be in the long pull position).
- 1000Hz Polling Rate: This ensures that your inputs are registered almost instantaneously, minimizing lag and maximizing your performance during competitive play.
- Mechanical Circular D-pad: Designed for quick reactions and accuracy in every direction, this D-pad elevates your gaming experience with superior responsiveness.
- $0: Download the game on a supported platform, play with the full champion roster and use whatever free or already available content your account provides.
- Optional Credits spending: Use Credits for eligible avatar and profile items, stages and selected chromas. The FAQ does not say that every item is available this way.
- Cosmetic collection purchase: Buy the Ultimate Bundle at the regional price listed by Riot, subject to the live store’s current contents and price.
There is no current Battle Pass subscription to add to that calculation, and there is no champion purchase cost under Patch 1.3.1. The only documented broad paid collection is cosmetic, so paying is a personalization choice rather than a prerequisite for gameplay.
Refunds for earlier purchases
Riot announced refunds for eligible KO Points and Starter Edition purchases made before August 20, 2026. Eligibility, processing and payment method depend on the platform and region. Riot’s support FAQ gives December 7, 2026 as the general request deadline, while warning that regional exceptions may apply.
If you bought through a console or PC storefront, follow the process for that platform rather than assuming that Riot’s procedure is identical everywhere. Have the account and transaction information associated with the purchase available. Because the deadline and exceptions are time-sensitive, check the current support instructions for your country before submitting a request; do not treat December 7 as a universal deadline where Riot lists a regional variation.
What happens after active development ends?
Riot says active development will end in December 2026. Its stated plan is to keep servers online after that point so online play can continue, and it says offline play is unaffected. The planned 2026 schedule includes further content and feature improvements, the Lux and Samira releases, and a final bug-fix pass in December.

Keeping servers online is not the same as promising new seasons, Ranked, Battle Passes or regular patches. Those systems are removed in the transition, and Riot says no future patches are planned after the evergreen change. The service plan is therefore continued availability of the existing game rather than an ongoing live-service roadmap.
Common mistakes when reading older 2XKO information
Assuming a pre-2026 currency guide is current
References to purchasing KO Points are obsolete after August 20, 2026. KO Points were part of the earlier premium-currency model but are removed in the transition.
Expecting a Battle Pass or seasonal progression
Patch 1.3.1 removes Battle Passes and seasons. A guide that tells you to choose a free or paid pass is describing the former plan.

The bundle contains digital cosmetics. Riot does not describe it as a gameplay requirement, and champions are unlocked for everyone.
Treating the listed price as permanent
$39.99, £33.99 and €39.99 are the prices Riot lists in its 2026 FAQ. The bundle is time-sensitive, and Riot said its contents would be updated, so verify the live store before purchase.
Confusing continued servers with continued development
Riot’s plan separates the two: servers remain online beyond 2026, while active development ends in December 2026. Continued access does not guarantee new content after the transition.
Bottom line for a new player
You can play 2XKO without spending money. The download remains free on PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, and Patch 1.3.1 unlocks every champion while removing the former premium and seasonal progression systems. Credits may still cover certain cosmetics, stages and profile items, while the optional Ultimate Bundle is Riot’s listed route to a broad cosmetics collection at $39.99 / £33.99 / €39.99, subject to live-store changes. The game is planned to stay online beyond 2026, but active development is scheduled to stop in December 2026.
