Is 64GB RAM Too Much for Gaming in 2026?

64GB RAM is unnecessary for most gaming-only PCs, but it can be worthwhile for demanding simulators, Escape from Tarkov, heavy mods, streaming, and memory-intensive work. For most players, 32GB remains the better target.

For most gaming PCs, 64GB of RAM is more than you need. In 2026, 32GB is the best general-purpose target for a new gaming system, while 16GB remains usable for lighter games and controlled background activity. Choose 64GB when you play unusually demanding simulators, use extensive mods, stream while multitasking, or also use the PC for editing, development, virtual machines, servers, or other memory-heavy work.

The short answer

Workload Recommended capacity
Older, competitive, indie, or lightweight games 16GB can be sufficient
New mainstream gaming PC 32GB
Gaming with demanding mods, heavy multitasking, or high-end simulation 64GB
Gaming plus video editing, 3D work, virtual machines, local AI, or development 64GB or more, depending on the workload

If you already have a healthy 32GB system and games run smoothly without memory pressure, upgrading to 64GB is unlikely to increase average FPS. The upgrade is worthwhile when your workload is actually running short of memory.

What RAM does in a gaming PC

System RAM temporarily holds data that Windows and active applications need. That includes the game, Windows services, launchers, browsers, Discord, recording software, mods, overlays, and other background programs.

It is different from VRAM, the memory on your graphics card. VRAM stores textures, frame buffers, ray-tracing data, and other graphics resources. Adding system RAM does not compensate for a graphics card with insufficient VRAM.

When physical RAM becomes scarce, Windows can use storage through the page file. An SSD is much slower than RAM, so heavy paging can contribute to hitching, slow asset loading, application closures, or crashes. A page file can help Windows manage memory; disabling it is not a recommended fix for RAM pressure.

16GB vs. 32GB vs. 64GB

16GB

16GB remains playable for many games, especially older titles, esports games, and systems with few background applications. It gives you less room for a browser, Discord, recording tools, mods, and demanding modern games at the same time.

Microsoft’s general Windows guidance places typical gaming needs around 16GB, while its gaming guidance identifies 32GB as more appropriate for serious players using demanding games or heavy mods. See Microsoft’s Windows buying guide and gaming setup guidance.

32GB

32GB is the practical sweet spot for most new gaming PCs. It provides useful headroom for current AAA games, browsers, voice chat, launchers, overlays, and ordinary streaming or recording without paying for capacity many gaming-only workloads will not use.

64GB

64GB is valuable when the computer has a workload capable of using it. It can reduce memory-related hitching and paging, but it does not automatically make the CPU or GPU render frames faster. Capacity beyond what the workload needs generally produces little gaming benefit.

What Steam’s hardware survey tells us

Steam’s optional, anonymous Windows hardware survey for June 2026 reported 16GB in 41.43% of surveyed systems, 32GB in 37.82%, 64GB in 4.15%, and more than 64GB in 0.57%. The figures show that 64GB remains a minority configuration, but they do not prove that any particular capacity is sufficient or that a game will perform well.

The survey reports installed hardware, not frame rates, frame-time consistency, or memory pressure. Use it as context rather than as a performance requirement. View the Steam Hardware Survey.

Does 64GB increase FPS?

Usually, no—at least not when a 32GB system has plenty of available memory.

When there is no memory pressure

If Windows, the game, and background applications fit comfortably within 32GB, the limiting component is more likely to be the GPU, CPU, game engine, storage, graphics settings, or driver. Moving to 64GB normally produces little or no meaningful average-FPS gain.

When memory pressure is present

If the system is frequently close to full capacity, 64GB can improve the experience by reducing reliance on the page file. Possible improvements include better 1% lows, fewer severe frame-time spikes, less hitching during area transitions, fewer out-of-memory errors, and smoother multitasking.

That may improve consistency without producing a large change in average FPS. A RAM upgrade is useful only when RAM capacity is the bottleneck.

Games and workloads where 64GB makes sense

Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024

Microsoft’s official specifications list 16GB as the minimum, 32GB as recommended, and 64GB as ideal for Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024. The 64GB figure belongs to the game’s highest-end target configuration alongside substantially stronger CPU and GPU hardware; it is not a standalone guarantee of higher performance. See the official Flight Simulator 2024 FAQ.

Escape from Tarkov

The current Steam listing for Escape from Tarkov specifies 16GB minimum and 64GB recommended. That makes 64GB a reasonable choice for players who want to match the published recommended configuration, although an official requirement does not guarantee a proportional FPS increase for every system or setting. See the Steam system requirements.

Star Citizen

Roberts Space Industries’ published requirement for Star Citizen includes 32GB of DDR4. 64GB may provide extra headroom for multitasking or other demanding applications, but 32GB is the developer-published target rather than 64GB. See the official requirements.

Heavily modded games

Large mod packs and high-resolution asset replacements can make games such as modded Minecraft, Skyrim, Fallout 4, and Cities: Skylines use considerably more memory than their base installations. 64GB can help when the complete modded workload approaches 32GB, but simply allocating more RAM to a game does not fix every problem. CPU limits, GPU VRAM, garbage collection, storage, and poorly optimized mods can remain the cause of stutter.

VR, streaming, and recording

64GB becomes more attractive when gaming is combined with OBS or another recorder, a browser with many tabs, Discord, music software, overlays, monitoring utilities, a camera workflow, or editing software. However, 32GB can still be enough for ordinary single-PC streaming. The answer depends on the game, encoder, browser usage, resolution, and other applications.

Non-gaming workloads

Video editing, 3D creation, software compilation, virtual machines, local servers, game development, and local AI tools can justify 64GB independently of gaming. If the same PC serves as a workstation, capacity is easier to justify than it is for gaming alone.

How to check whether you need more RAM

  1. Start the game and reproduce the problem using your normal settings and background applications.
  2. Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
  3. Open Performance, then select Memory.
  4. Check total usage, available memory, committed memory, and signs of substantial paging activity.
  5. Open Processes to find browsers, launchers, recording tools, or other unusually heavy applications.

Windows labels can vary slightly by version and language. Do not treat one isolated usage number as proof that a game needs that much RAM: Windows also uses memory for caching, and committed memory, standby memory, working sets, and available memory describe different things.

If usage remains comfortably below your installed capacity and the system shows no memory-related paging or reproducible symptoms, adding RAM is unlikely to solve the problem. Stutter may instead come from shader compilation, insufficient GPU VRAM, CPU limits, storage, drivers, overheating, unstable memory settings, or the game engine.

Choosing a 64GB kit

Prefer 2×32GB for a desktop

For a 64GB desktop configuration, a matched 2×32GB kit is generally preferable to combining two separate 2×16GB kits. A matched kit is validated together, and two DIMMs are often easier for the memory controller to run at their advertised speed than four DIMMs.

Four modules can work, but they place greater demands on the CPU’s memory controller and motherboard. You may need to use a lower speed or manually troubleshoot stability, particularly with overclocked XMP or EXPO settings. Do not assume that two separately purchased kits with identical specifications behave exactly like one validated kit.

Check platform compatibility

DDR4 and DDR5 are not interchangeable. The motherboard and CPU platform determine the supported memory generation, capacity, slot configuration, and stable speeds. Check the motherboard’s memory support list and your processor’s specifications before buying.

For laptops, verify whether memory is soldered, whether slots are available, and the maximum supported capacity. Some laptops cannot be upgraded at all.

Capacity comes before speed—but only when needed

Choose RAM in this order:

  1. Enough capacity for the complete workload.
  2. The correct DDR generation and physical compatibility.
  3. Stable operation on the motherboard and CPU.
  4. Appropriate speed and latency.
  5. A sensible upgrade path and price.

If your games fit comfortably in 32GB, properly configured 32GB with suitable speed and latency can be a better gaming choice than slower 64GB. Do not choose slower memory solely because its capacity is larger unless your workload actually exceeds 32GB.

Use matched modules rather than a single large stick whenever possible. Single-channel operation can reduce memory bandwidth, especially on systems using integrated graphics.

When to spend the money elsewhere

Do not buy 64GB just because it is the largest capacity available. A stronger GPU is usually the more noticeable gaming upgrade when graphics performance is the limit. A faster CPU may matter more in simulation-heavy games, while an SSD can improve loading and asset-streaming behavior. Better cooling can help if thermal throttling is involved.

Also distinguish system RAM from GPU VRAM. A PC can have 64GB of system memory and still struggle because its graphics card lacks sufficient VRAM. Likewise, a weak CPU, slow storage, unstable memory settings, or shader compilation can cause stutter that additional RAM will not fix.

Is 64GB future-proof?

64GB gives a new system more headroom and may reduce the chance of an early memory upgrade, but it is not a guarantee that the PC will remain suitable for every future game. Future requirements are uncertain, and the GPU, VRAM, CPU, storage, or platform may become limiting first.

For a high-end build intended to last several years, the additional capacity can be a reasonable convenience if the price and compatibility are acceptable. For a budget-conscious gaming-only build, 32GB is usually the better-balanced choice.

Final recommendations

  • Building a mainstream gaming PC: choose 32GB, ideally as a matched 2×16GB kit.
  • Keeping an older or budget system: 16GB can remain acceptable for lighter games and limited multitasking.
  • Playing Flight Simulator 2024 at its ideal target: 64GB matches Microsoft’s published ideal configuration.
  • Playing Escape from Tarkov at its recommended target: 64GB matches the current Steam recommendation.
  • Using extensive mods, streaming, recording, or heavy multitasking: choose 64GB if measurements show your complete workload approaching 32GB.
  • Gaming plus professional or development work: 64GB may be justified, with 96GB or 128GB reserved for genuinely heavier workloads.
  • Upgrading a healthy 32GB gaming system: usually keep the money unless you have a measured capacity problem or a specific demanding workload.
