It depends on the SEO tool and its scale. If 0.70 is a decimal fraction on a 0–1 scale, it equals 70/100. On a 0–100 scale where higher scores mean harder keywords, 70 signals a challenging term—not an automatic no-go. Check the tool’s definition before deciding what the number means.
What does a 0.70 KD mean?
“KD” usually means keyword difficulty, but it is not a single score set by Google. SEO platforms estimate difficulty using their own methods, so the number is meaningful only alongside the tool name, the score format, and the provider’s definition.
- If the score is a 0–1 fraction: 0.70 converts mathematically to 70/100.
- If the tool uses a 0–100 scale with higher scores meaning harder: 70 indicates substantial competition.
- If the tool uses another format or normalization: do not assume that 0.70 means 70 out of 100; check the platform’s documentation.
Neither a converted number nor a provider’s difficulty estimate tells you the probability that your particular site will rank.
Why KD scores differ between SEO tools
Providers define and calculate their own estimates. Ahrefs describes its Keyword Difficulty score as a 0–100 estimate of how hard it may be to reach Google’s first page, with 100 hardest. Its calculation focuses on referring domains linking to pages in the organic top 10 and does not include on-page SEO factors. Ahrefs explains its KD calculation.

Ahrefs also gives an illustrative example in which a KD 40 keyword may require approximately 56 referring domains to enter the top 10. That is an Ahrefs estimate, not a universal backlink requirement or guarantee. See Ahrefs’ Keyword Difficulty explanation.
Semrush likewise describes its KD% as a 0–100 estimate, with higher values indicating more difficulty. Its methodology considers search results and keyword characteristics, so its score is not calculated identically to Ahrefs’ backlink-focused estimate. Semrush also offers provider-specific difficulty bands and Personal Keyword Difficulty; those labels should not be treated as universal definitions. Semrush documents its KD% metric.

Because the providers use different methodologies, a 70 in one tool is not necessarily equivalent to a 70 in another. Ahrefs’ own glossary notes that keyword difficulty is an estimate because Google does not disclose all its ranking factors. Read Ahrefs’ keyword difficulty glossary.
How to decide whether a 70 KD is a good target
- Identify the tool and exact label. Confirm whether the interface shows 0.70, 70, or 70%, and which provider produced it.
- Verify the scale and direction. Read the provider’s current definition rather than assuming every metric labeled KD is formatted or calculated the same way.
- Inspect the live search results for your target location and query. Note the intent behind the results, the types of pages ranking, how thoroughly they answer the query, and the strength of their backlink profiles.
- Assess your site’s fit. Consider whether your site has relevant expertise and authority, and whether you can make a more useful result for the searcher.
- Compare alternatives using more than KD. Weigh relevance, search intent, demand if available, business value, the current results, and your ability to serve the audience. A lower score alone does not make a keyword a better choice.
- Check how fresh the score is. Search results and tool databases change; Ahrefs notes that its KD may be cached when the SERP has not been refreshed recently.
What a 70 score cannot tell you
A 70 on a higher-is-harder 0–100 scale is a competition signal, not a verdict on whether your site can rank. The score does not capture every factor affecting a specific page, and it is not a Google metric or a ranking guarantee. Use it to screen opportunities, then judge the actual search results and your ability to meet the query’s intent.
