A boat on blue ice is listed at about 72.72 blocks per second; on ordinary ice, frosted ice, or packed ice, it is listed at 40 blocks per second. Those figures do not settle whether a boat is faster than an elytra: elytra speed depends on how you fly and whether you use firework rockets, and the available sources do not give a comparable current speed figure. The answer depends on the route and setup.
How fast is a boat on ice?
The Minecraft Wiki lists these boat top speeds in its boat mechanics section:
| Surface | Reported boat top speed |
|---|---|
| Ice, frosted ice, or packed ice | 40 blocks per second (Minecraft Wiki; publication year not stated) |
| Blue ice | About 72.72 blocks per second (Minecraft Wiki; publication year not stated) |
Blue ice is the fastest boat surface among those listed. The figures are reported top speeds, not a guarantee for every route, edition, or game version; the source is a community-maintained wiki, not a current Mojang specification.
How does an elytra compare?
An elytra lets a player glide, and firework rockets can boost speed in midair, according to the Minecraft Wiki loading tips. The source does not give a current numeric elytra speed that can be directly compared with the boat figures.

So there is no supported universal verdict that an elytra or a boat always wins. A straight, sustained boat run on blue ice is a specific case; an elytra run changes with flight angle, route, and rocket boosts. Comparing the blue-ice top speed with an unspecified elytra speed would not be an apples-to-apples race.

- Java or Bedrock Edition and the exact game version.
- Whether the boat route uses ordinary, packed, or blue ice.
- Whether the elytra run is unboosted or uses firework rockets.
- Whether the route is straight or requires turns and altitude changes.
A useful result is a timed run under those matched conditions—not an isolated boat top speed paired with an unverified elytra number.

Mojang’s legacy issue tracker records a Bedrock bug where blocks without collision, such as redstone dust, slowed boats on blue ice; the tracker lists version 1.16.20 as the fix. That is historical context, not proof of identical behavior in every current build. Check the exact version you are playing if the result matters: Mojang issue MCPE-101202.
