Neither an SMG nor a shotgun is universally better in a video games. The stronger pick depends on the game, its current weapon balance, and how far away your fights usually happen. As a general starting point, shotguns are often designed for very close encounters, while SMGs can suit medium-close fights—but the specific game and patch matter.
When is an SMG the better choice?
An SMG may suit a fight that happens just beyond a shotgun’s most effective distance, especially if the game gives it a useful combination of sustained fire and manageable recoil. But weapon-class labels alone do not settle the comparison: individual weapons and balance changes can alter their strengths.

When is a shotgun the better choice?
A shotgun may be the better pick when you can close the distance and land a decisive shot. Garena described shotguns in Free Fire as suited to “super close-range combat” and SMGs to “medium-close-range brawls.” That is the developer’s stated design intent for Free Fire, not a rule that applies to every shooter.
How can a game’s balance change the answer?
Weapon roles are shaped by game-specific tuning. In a May 24, 2023 Free Fire balance post, Garena said shotguns had been too powerful at both close and medium-close range in its observed game data. It adjusted selected weapons to sharpen the intended distinction:
#1 Best Overall
- With broad game support, the Logitech Gamepad F310 works with old standbys to today's biggest titles, so it's easy to set up and use with your favorite games.
- Profiler software allows the gamepad to be programmed to perform keyboard and mouse commands for games without gamepad support.* * Requires software installation.
- A familiar control layout that doesn't require a learning curve to be able to use, with all the same buttons as on an Xbox 360.
- The unique floating D-pad rests on four switches-instead of a single pivot point-making it responsive to quick changes in direction.
- The six-foot cord lets you lean back and play a comfortable distance from your PC monitor.
| Weapon | Change in Garena’s May 24, 2023 Free Fire update |
|---|---|
| M1887 | Range −15%; reload speed +10% |
| Charge Buster | Range −15%; magazine +1 |
| M1014 variants | Range −12%; accuracy +20% |
| MP40 | Damage +8% |
| Bizon | Damage +10% |
| Thompson | Damage +4% |
These are the adjustments listed in that dated update, not confirmed current stats. A historical patch is useful evidence that developers can shift the balance between weapon classes; it cannot tell you which one is strongest in the latest version.
What should you compare in your game?
For a meaningful class comparison, look at the weapons as they behave under the game’s current rules. Check:
- Engagement range: Where can the weapon deal reliable damage?
- Damage and time to eliminate: How much damage lands in a realistic encounter, rather than in an ideal single shot?
- Fire rate and reload cadence: Can you keep pressure on a target, and how exposed are you while reloading?
- Accuracy, spread, and recoil: How reliably can you hit at the distances you expect?
- Magazine capacity and armor interactions: Do the game’s rules change how many hits you need or how long you can fire?
- Loadout opportunity cost: What other weapon or capability are you giving up by choosing this slot?
Use official patch notes or verified in-game stats for the named game and version. If you cannot confirm current values, treat claims about a class being definitively stronger as provisional.

Why the game has to be named before picking a winner
The question does not identify a game or patch, so there is no basis for a current, game-specific verdict. Even within one title, balance updates may change range, damage, accuracy, or other traits. For example, a January 27, 2026 PC Gamer opinion piece described Fortnite’s then-current balance as SMGs being outclassed by rifles at medium range and shotguns up close. That was a dated assessment of Fortnite, not an official universal rule, and later updates may have changed the picture.
To get a useful recommendation, specify the game and check the latest official patch notes or verified weapon stats. Then compare the actual weapons you can equip—not just the labels “SMG” and “shotgun.”
Do game comparisons apply to real firearms?
No. A weapon’s behavior in a game is not a reliable guide to its real-world counterpart. GameSpot’s features on how games portray shotguns (December 12, 2021) and how games portray SMGs (December 4, 2023) discuss differences between virtual weapons and real firearms. The game-balance comparison here is about gameplay, not real-world performance or safety.
