A foldable phone can make sense if you want its large inner screen for plenty of things beyond Pokémon GO—and are happy to play on the cover screen if the open-screen layout disappoints. The game’s official device guidance does not certify foldable models or guarantee that every phone meeting its listed requirements will work. If Pokémon GO is your main reason for paying extra, compare conventional phones and try the exact foldable before you buy.
What Pokémon GO officially requires
The Pokémon GO Help Center lists Android 9 or newer, at least 2 GB of RAM, GPS and Location Services, and a strong internet connection. It gives 720 × 1280 as a preferred Android resolution, not a performance target. These are compatibility criteria, not a promise of smooth play on every qualifying phone. Niantic says it cannot guarantee support for every device model or regional configuration. See the official supported-devices guidance for the current criteria.
Pokémon GO depends on location and connectivity as you explore. Niantic says GPS and Location Services are required and calls for a strong internet connection; it also notes that some Wi-Fi-only tablets lack built-in GPS and that congested event networks can make it difficult to maintain a strong enough GPS signal. A large display cannot compensate for unreliable location or mobile data.
Do not treat the Google Play listing’s older compatibility paragraph as the current requirements: although the listing was updated on September 24, 2026, that paragraph says its information was current as of October 20, 2020. Use the Help Center’s device page instead. If you are considering an older used phone, also check that it supports 64-bit Android. Niantic ended support for affected 32-bit Android devices in phases beginning in March 2025 for Samsung Galaxy Store installs and July 2025 for Google Play installs; see the 32-bit Android support announcement.

How the two screens may suit the game
The cover display is the conventional phone-sized screen you use while the device is folded. The inner display is larger, but a bigger panel does not guarantee that Pokémon GO will fill it or arrange its interface comfortably. Android’s device compatibility-mode guidance explains that apps can be letterboxed to preserve their aspect ratio on screens with different dimensions. That is general platform context, not confirmation of how the game behaves on a particular foldable.
| Play setup | What to check | What is established |
|---|---|---|
| Folded, cover display | Can you read the map, reach the controls and catch Pokémon comfortably with your usual grip? | The supplied device guidance does not certify cover-screen play on particular foldables. |
| Unfolded, inner display | Does the game use the space well, or do scaling, aspect ratio, control placement or your grip make play awkward? | Android apps may be letterboxed for compatibility. Fold owners have reported scaling and usability compromises on some older Galaxy Z Fold generations, but those are individual reports, not current model tests. |
Older player discussions describe Pokémon GO working on the cover screen of some Galaxy Z Fold 4/5 devices while the inner-screen interface did not scale well for those users. Other posts mention split-screen play and trade-offs in handling and battery use. These are anecdotes about older devices, not confirmation from Niantic or Samsung, and they do not establish how a current foldable will behave. Try the exact phone in both configurations
If possible, install the current game and test it folded and unfolded during the retailer’s return period. Look at map visibility, interface scaling, touch accuracy, where the controls land, and whether either screen feels awkward with the grip you would use while walking. A quick look at a product demo or a test on another Fold generation cannot answer those model-specific questions.
Check location and mobile connectivity where you play
Confirm that GPS and Location Services work reliably and that the handset can maintain the connection you need in the places you actually play. Pokémon GO is designed around exploring real places; Nintendo’s Pokémon GO page also describes its outdoor gameplay. A phone that meets the general requirements can still be a poor fit if its location reception or your local network is unreliable.

Look for independent sustained-use testing
Battery life and temperature depend on the specific phone and how it is used. There is no controlled current comparison here showing that foldables drain faster or run hotter than conventional phones in Pokémon GO. Before buying, look for an independent review of the exact model that tests Pokémon GO or sustained GPS-and-game use, rather than inferring performance from screen size alone. A portable power bank can be a practical option for a long outdoor session, but needing one is not evidence that a particular foldable has poor endurance.
Consider how you will handle it outdoors
Think about whether you can comfortably hold, open and use the phone while walking, and whether the screen you prefer gives you a secure, natural grip. These are personal fit questions, not universal disadvantages of foldables. Prioritize safe play: stop somewhere appropriate before concentrating on the screen.
When is a foldable worth the extra cost?
Judge the purchase as a whole phone, not as a Pokémon GO upgrade. The larger inner screen may be useful for reading, video, multitasking or other apps; those uses can justify choosing a foldable even if you end up playing Pokémon GO on the cover screen. If Pokémon GO is the primary reason you would pay more, a conventional smartphone is also worth comparing, and trying the exact foldable matters more than assuming the larger display is better for the game.
Quick Recap
- A foldable may fit: You already want the inner display for other everyday uses, and the cover screen or tested inner-screen layout is comfortable for your play.
- Compare conventional phones first: Pokémon GO is the main reason for the purchase, or you cannot verify that the game feels right on the model you plan to buy.
