Is ARC Raiders worth playing solo, and can you play with friends?

Yes—ARC Raiders supports solo play and playing with friends across PlayStation, Xbox, and PC. Solo is worth considering if you like high-stakes extraction, scavenging and encounters that can turn dangerous without warning. It is not a traditional solo campaign or a guaranteed player-versus-environment mode: standard matches still include hostile ARC machines and other Raiders, and matchmaking can place you near larger or differently minded groups.

Friends can form cross-platform parties, and recent updates make it easier for platform and Embark friends to join. The fairest summary is conditional: solo works for independent players who accept uncertainty, while a regular group provides coordination and social support without removing the extraction risk.

Can you play ARC Raiders solo?

Yes. ARC Raiders is built as a multiplayer extraction adventure, but Embark explicitly presents a lone-ranger option alongside team play. You can enter a match without a pre-made squad, collect what you can, deal with ARC enemies and decide whether to extract while other Raiders are also in the world.

That distinction matters. Playing solo means you do not need a regular party; it does not mean the game becomes an offline campaign. Standard matchmaking is still a PvPvE environment. Machines can threaten your run, and another Raider can attack, steal an opportunity or force you to change plans. If you want a predictable story mode with no human opponents, the normal solo queue is not designed for that.

What solo matchmaking tries to do

Embark’s May 20, 2026 explanation says the system pursues both fairness and enjoyment. It attempts to prioritize equal squad sizes and considers patterns in how players behaved in previous rounds. A cautious player is more likely to meet players with similar tendencies than someone who repeatedly seeks fights, but the developer stresses that these are probabilities, not promises.

The official wording is precise: “Similarity is more likely, not guaranteed.” A solo queue therefore does not guarantee a solo-only lobby, and it cannot promise that every encounter will be cooperative. Squad-size balancing is also a priority rather than a hard rule. You can still encounter duos or trios, particularly when population, region or queue conditions make a perfect match impractical.

There is no permanent PvE-only standard queue

In the standard matchmaking system described by Embark in May 2026, there are no PvE-only lobbies. A single kill or other isolated action also does not immediately move you into a permanently aggressive pool. The system treats playstyle as a spectrum and uses behavior over multiple rounds, so changes in the kinds of encounters you seek are expected to influence likely matches gradually.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That also means you should not treat one quiet match as a guarantee that future runs will be quiet. The profile of a squad reflects every member, not only the party leader. In a group, the combined behavior of the players can affect the kind of lobby the system considers appropriate.

Is ARC Raiders worth playing solo?

Solo is a good fit when the appeal is making your own decisions under pressure. You can choose when to avoid a fight, when to take a risk and when an extraction is more valuable than one more item. There is no need to synchronize a route, wait for a friend to reconnect or negotiate a plan before moving.

The trade-off is that every mistake is yours to recover from. A group can divide attention, revive a downed member or create a distraction; a lone Raider has no coordinated backup. Because the game remains multiplayer, another player can still interrupt a run even when you queued alone. Whether that tension is exciting or frustrating is the central personal test.

Solo suits these players

  • Independent planners: You prefer controlling your own pace and accepting the consequences of each decision.
  • Extraction fans: The risk of losing a promising run is part of the attraction rather than an unwanted interruption.
  • Players without a fixed group: You can play whenever you have time instead of waiting for friends to be online.
  • Experimenters: You want to learn the maps, systems and encounter patterns at your own speed before committing to team coordination.

Solo is a weaker fit for these expectations

  • A campaign-style experience: The solo queue does not remove other Raiders or convert the game into a scripted single-player story.
  • Guaranteed PvE safety: Standard matchmaking includes player-versus-player risk.
  • Constant tactical support: You must handle decisions and setbacks without a squad’s immediate help.
  • Predictable opponents: Equal-squad and playstyle priorities improve the odds of a suitable encounter, but they cannot guarantee one.

There are no official statistics establishing solo satisfaction, matchmaking success rates or the percentage of solo players who meet other solos. Any recommendation should therefore be based on the game’s stated design and your tolerance for uncertainty, not on an invented success rate.

Open parties and joining between rounds

Headwinds patch notes 1.13.0, dated January 27, 2026, added open parties. Embark and platform friends can join an open party, and a friend can join while you are already in a round and wait in the lobby for the next match. Squadmates can also invite people; the party leader is not the only person who can send an invitation.

This is useful for an irregular group. One person can start a run, another can join during that run, and the party can assemble for the next match without forcing the first player to abandon the current round. It does not change the fact that everyone still enters the extraction environment together only when the next match begins.

Duos are prioritized, not guaranteed

Embark’s November 12, 2025 matchmaking explanation says solos and squads are prioritized separately where possible, with duos prioritized against duos and trios against trios. The wording is deliberately qualified: mismatched group sizes can still occur. A duo should expect the system to look for another duo, but not to assume that every opposing group will have exactly two players.

Is ARC Raiders cross-platform?

Yes. Cross-platform social play is an official feature covering PlayStation, Xbox and PC. Crossplay affects the available matchmaking pool, so turning it off can make the pool smaller and queues longer. It also does not guarantee a more cooperative encounter; it simply changes which players can be matched with you.

In a party, the most restrictive member’s Crossplay setting applies to the whole group. If one person has Crossplay disabled, the party may be limited by that setting. Embark’s support guidance identifies Crossplay being off as a common reason for slow matchmaking.

How to fix slow matchmaking with friends

Check these settings in order before assuming the service is unavailable:

  1. Check Crossplay for every party member. Turn it on if your group wants the broadest pool. Remember that the most restrictive setting in the party governs the group.
  2. Check the matchmaking region. Embark recommends setting the server to Automatic when crossplay changes do not resolve the problem.
  3. Use the correct menu path. On PC, open Gameplay > Server. On console, open Social, then the settings menu, then Gameplay > Server.
  4. Retry outside quiet hours. A low-population region or an unusually quiet period can reduce the number of suitable matches, especially when additional squad-size preferences are active.

These steps improve the chance of finding a match; they do not override the game’s attempt to assemble suitable squad sizes or guarantee a particular opponent type.

What changes during the October 2026 PvE toggle beta?

Embark announced a temporary PvE matchmaking toggle test running from October 13 at 11:00 CEST through October 20 at 11:00 CEST. On October 16, 2026, that announced window is in progress. It is a beta test, not a permanent replacement for standard matchmaking, so availability ends at the stated closing time unless Embark announces otherwise.

Beta rule Practical effect
Zero player-to-player damage Players cannot directly damage one another in the test servers.
Throwable stun and fire items do not work on other players Those items cannot be used to hurt or disable another player during the test.
Barricades and ziplines remain unaffected Those systems continue to function under their normal stated rules.
Lower overall loot value The test trades some reward value for a less PvP-focused environment.
No squad-size separation priority The beta does not prioritize matching the same number of players against one another.
Some major map conditions are omitted The tested environment is not identical to the full standard rotation.
Eight-second reacquisition condition After a downed player’s eight-second grace period, ARC enemies may reacquire that player if they catch the player moving.
Potentially longer queues Low-population regions and quiet hours may produce longer waits.

The PvE toggle removes direct player damage, but it does not make every run consequence-free. ARC enemies remain relevant, and the beta’s lower loot value and omitted conditions are explicit trade-offs. Standard PvPvE matchmaking continues to exist during the test for players who want the usual risk profile.

Can experienced solo players challenge squads?

Yes, but only under a specific condition. The January 27, 2026 patch notes added an opt-in Solo vs Squad toggle for solo Raiders at level 40 or above. Selecting it places the player in the Squads queue, creating a deliberate solo-against-squads challenge rather than relying on an accidental mismatch.

The option grants a 20% end-of-round XP bonus whether the run ends in extraction or defeat. The bonus does not make the encounter safer; it is compensation for choosing the harder queue. Players below level 40, or players who do not opt in, should not assume that every solo match will use this rule.

Solo or friends: which should you choose?

Decision factor Solo Playing with friends
Social coordination No scheduled party is required; you control the pace. Cross-platform parties let friends coordinate routes and decisions.
Encounter uncertainty Equal-squad and playstyle priorities are possible but not guaranteed. Duos and trios receive matching priority, but mismatched groups can still appear.
PvP tolerance You face the normal risk from other Raiders in standard matchmaking. The group can communicate about threats, but other Raiders remain part of standard play.
Queue availability Crossplay and server settings affect the size of your pool. The most restrictive party Crossplay setting applies to everyone.
Challenge options At level 40 or above, you can opt into Solo vs Squad for a 20% XP bonus on extraction or defeat. Regular squad matchmaking is available without that solo challenge toggle.
PvE beta trade-offs The temporary test removes player damage but lowers loot value and does not separate squad sizes. Friends can still group, but the same beta restrictions and possible queue delays apply.

A practical recommendation

Start solo if you are deciding whether the extraction loop itself appeals to you. You will learn whether uncertainty, scavenging and the possibility of losing a run are satisfying without making your friends organize around your schedule. Keep expectations realistic: the standard queue is multiplayer even when you enter alone.

Choose a friends party when communication and shared decision-making are part of the appeal. Cross-platform support means the group does not need to own the same console or PC storefront, and open parties make it easier for people to join between rounds. If your group struggles to find matches, check Crossplay and set the server to Automatic before changing anything else.

For players who want the most controlled test of PvE risk, the October 13–20, 2026 toggle beta is the relevant temporary option during its announced window. It removes player-to-player damage, but the lower loot value, omitted map conditions, lack of squad-size separation and possible longer queues mean it is a different trade-off rather than a definitive replacement for standard play.
