How to get started in ARC Raiders: a beginner’s guide to extraction, gear, and progression

By VGSources Team 9 min read

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

ARC Raiders is easiest to understand as a risk-and-reward loop: enter the surface with a manageable objective, collect resources while dealing with ARC machines and potentially hostile Raiders, then decide when the value of your haul is worth more than the chance of finding something else. Your progress is only secure once you extract.

For a first raid, keep the goal modest, bring equipment you can afford to lose, learn how extraction routes work, and leave before greed turns a successful run into a total loss. Gear, Trials, Feats, projects, and upgrades all matter, but none replaces the central skill of getting out alive.

The beginner loop: objective, exposure, extraction

Every raid asks you to balance three things: what you want to accomplish, what you are carrying, and how much danger you will accept to improve the result. You go topside to scavenge, pursue objectives, and build a better inventory. ARC machines can make an area dangerous, and other Raiders may decide that your supplies are worth fighting over. The game does not require you to win every encounter. It requires you to make a good decision about which encounters are worth taking.

ARK: Survival Ascended - PlayStation 5
  • ARK: Survival Ascended has completely recreated and redesigned the artwork and worlds of ARK to take advantage of the latest in videogame technology, Unreal Engine 5, using high-end graphics features such as fully dynamic Global Illumination (“Lumen”), so that light bounces realistically of off surfaces and provides realistic reflections, and advanced mesh streaming (“Nanite”) of hundreds of millions of triangles for extreme detail.
  • Advanced new physics systems such as dynamic water so that every creature creates waves, ripples, splashes, and bubbles as they move through fluids, and fully interactive physical foliage where every blade of grass, bush, and tree reacts to characters, explosions, projectiles, and physics objects.
  • ARK: Survival Ascended includes access to all of ARK’s worlds, including Scorched Earth, Aberration, Extinction, ARK Genesis Part 1, ARK Genesis Part 2, and more. The Island is released now, with the subsequent expansion worlds to be added at no additional cost on a regular basis.
  • Thorough Quality of Life revamps in every area: redesigned User Interfaces, dynamic navigation for intelligent creature pathfinding, Wild Babies, Photo Mode, new Camera systems, new Map system, Tracking System, new Structures and Items, new Creatures, and much more.
  • Cross-Platform Modding: Download & play new custom content created by players, including new maps, creatures, items, and game modes, through a dedicated new Mod-bowser directly within the game! Enjoy an endless stream of new ARK content as the creativity and talent of the community is fully unleashed for the first time ever across gaming platforms!

What a first successful raid looks like

  1. Choose one achievable objective. A location, a small collection target, or a Trial task is enough. Do not begin by trying to clear every point of interest on the map.
  2. Match your commitment to the objective. Take equipment that helps with the job but does not make a minor errand financially painful if the raid fails.
  3. Move with an exit in mind. As you travel, note where standard extraction points are and whether you have access to a Raider Hatch.
  4. Reassess after each valuable find or fight. New loot increases the reward for surviving, but it can also increase the temptation to stay in a dangerous area.
  5. Extract when the next gain is not worth the added exposure. A modest haul that reaches your inventory is more useful than a larger haul left on the surface.

This is practical advice based on ARC Raiders’ stated risk-and-reward design, not a rule that every raid must follow. A squad pursuing a difficult objective may rationally stay longer; a solo player carrying an important item may leave immediately.

Extraction is the hinge of the entire raid

Extraction turns temporary progress into usable progress. Trials explicitly tie raid progress to safe extraction, and the same logic applies to resources and objective items: finding something is not the same as banking it. Before you commit to another room, fight, or detour, ask whether you still have a realistic route out.

Standard extraction points

Standard points have no direct resource cost. Their trade-off is exposure. They attract attention, and their availability diminishes as a session proceeds, so a point that was convenient early may be less useful later. Treat a visible standard point as a timing decision rather than a guaranteed emergency button.

Raider Hatches

Raider Hatches require a Hatch Key. The developer describes keys as obtainable by buying, crafting, or finding them. Hatches are described as quieter and quicker than standard extraction, but that does not make them categorically safe: you still need access to one, the key has an opportunity cost, and nearby threats can still matter.

The developer also describes a three-for-one deal when extracting with a squad. Because extraction rules and costs can change with updates, check the current in-game requirement before assuming how many squad members a key covers.

Extraction option Direct cost Noise and attention Speed Availability during a session
Standard extraction point None Draws attention Not characterized as quick in the developer explanation Diminishes as the session proceeds
Raider Hatch Hatch Key Described as quieter Described as quick Depends on finding an accessible hatch and meeting its current requirements

How to choose between them

  • Use a standard point when you have no key, the route is clear enough, and saving the key is more valuable than reducing attention.
  • Use a Hatch when the key is already part of your plan, a quieter or faster departure materially reduces your exposure, and the hatch is actually reachable.
  • Do not travel across the map solely to force a hatch extraction. The route can expose you to more danger than the hatch saves.
  • In a squad, agree on the extraction method before anyone starts a final fight. A last-minute split between a point and a hatch is an easy way to lose the haul.

Build a loadout around risk, not a universal tier list

There is no sourced universal beginner weapon or loadout that is correct for every map condition, objective, or squad. Start with the question, “What am I willing to lose for this objective?” Then choose equipment that gives you a reasonable way to complete that objective without turning a failed raid into a setback you cannot absorb.

Low-commitment runs

Use a low-commitment setup when you are learning a route, checking a map condition, or collecting common materials. The purpose is information and repetition. You should be comfortable extracting early if the route becomes unfavorable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Objective-focused runs

When an objective needs a particular item, location, or interaction, spend resources only where they improve that task. A tool that helps you complete the objective can be worthwhile even if it is not the strongest general-purpose option. Avoid adding expensive equipment simply because the raid might become a firefight.

High-commitment runs

Reserve your most costly equipment for a high-value objective, a coordinated squad plan, or a map condition that justifies the risk. A high-commitment loadout should come with a clear extraction plan and a reason to continue after the first successful objective.

Intended run Suitable commitment Decision rule
Learning or route check Low Prioritize information and a safe exit over extra loot.
Specific objective Enough to complete the objective reliably Pay for capability that serves the objective, not an imagined fight.
High-value or coordinated run Higher, if the reward justifies the loss Define the objective, fallback route, and extraction method before entering.

Why free-loadout rules need an update check

Live Update 1.33.0, published June 16, 2026, temporarily disabled free loadouts for the Night Raid and Close Scrutiny scenarios for three weeks. The stated reason was that those scenarios offered better loot and the team wanted players to commit to an appropriate level of risk and reward. This was a time-limited test, not proof that the restriction remains active on October 16, 2026. Map conditions and entry rules can change, so inspect the current scenario information before queueing.

Surviving contact with ARC machines and Raiders

Not every hostile signal demands a fight. ARC machines can make a route expensive in time, ammunition, and healing resources; hostile Raiders can turn a noisy engagement into a contest over your entire haul. If an encounter does not serve your objective, bypassing it is a legitimate success condition.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When to avoid an encounter

  • The fight is away from your objective and has no clear resource benefit.
  • You are carrying valuable items but have not yet identified a reliable extraction route.
  • The noise or delay would expose you to additional machines or players.
  • Your squad is separated, low on supplies, or uncertain about the current map condition.

When fighting can be justified

  • The encounter blocks the only practical path to an objective.
  • You need the location’s resources and have enough equipment to complete the fight quickly.
  • An opponent is already committed to an extraction or objective that your squad has deliberately chosen to contest.
  • The expected value of the reward exceeds the replacement cost of your loadout and the risk to the items already secured.

After a fight, pause before looting. Check your remaining supplies, listen for additional threats, and decide whether the new reward changes the extraction decision. Winning a battle does not make the next battle mandatory.

Progression is more than the inventory you bring home

ARC Raiders layers several progression systems over the raid loop. Their exact objectives, rewards, and names can change with updates, so read the current descriptions rather than relying on an old checklist.

Trials

Trials are raid-bound objectives. Their progress is tied to completing the relevant activity and safely extracting, so an unfinished or unbanked run may not advance the way you expect. Plan the objective and the exit together instead of treating extraction as an optional final step.

Feats and Reward Passes

Feats provide objectives that feed into Reward Passes, which use Feat progress to unlock rewards. Check which Feats are active before a session and select one that fits the raid you already intend to play. Forcing an unrelated Feat can push you into unnecessary exposure.

Projects and upgrade systems

Projects and other upgrade systems add longer-term reasons to collect materials and complete tasks. Use them to decide what is worth keeping, but do not let a project requirement erase the basic risk calculation. If the required item is difficult to replace, extracting with one secure copy may be better than chasing a second.

Frozen Trail: current content as of October 16, 2026

Frozen Trail launched on October 8, 2026, and is the current update to account for when you plan a raid. It added Pendola Pass, the Outpost, weapon amplification to a fifth tier, new skills, Tethers, and the Grapple Hook.

Pendola Pass and the Outpost

Pendola Pass introduces a new area and new threats. The Outpost gives you a route to amplify weapons to a fifth tier and unlock special abilities. Because these systems add additional objectives and investment decisions, decide whether a raid is for immediate extraction or for building toward the Outpost before you queue.

Trials Season 6

Trials Season 6 began on October 8 and is scheduled through November 16, 2026. An October 12 announcement described weekly objectives and challenges involving Pendola Pass and its new threats. The schedule and reward list are volatile; verify the active week and requirements in-game before committing an expensive loadout.

New traversal and utility items

Tethers and the Grapple Hook expand the tools available for movement and problem-solving. Treat them as objective-specific options rather than automatic upgrades for every raid. If a tool is required for the task you selected, include it in the risk calculation and keep an extraction route that does not depend on an untested shortcut.

A practical plan for your first five raids

Raid 1: learn the map and extraction rhythm

Take a low-commitment loadout. Set one nearby objective, identify a standard extraction point, and leave as soon as you have a small useful haul. The goal is to understand how long movement and extraction take, not to maximize value.

Raid 2: test one route under pressure

Repeat or slightly extend the route. Note where ARC activity or player traffic makes the path noisy. If you have a Hatch Key, compare the route to a hatch without assuming it is always the better choice.

Raid 3: combine a Trial or Feat with a realistic objective

Select one active task that fits your intended route. Read its completion and extraction conditions before entering. If the task sends you somewhere dangerous, lower your loadout commitment unless the reward clearly justifies the risk.

Raid 4: practice the leave-now decision

After securing your first valuable item, deliberately evaluate whether continuing is worthwhile. This builds the habit that protects progression: you can always start another raid, but you cannot recover a haul lost because you stayed without a reason.

Raid 5: coordinate an extraction plan

With a squad, agree on the objective, fallback route, key ownership, and extraction method before entering. During the raid, call out when the group has reached its minimum acceptable reward. A shared departure rule prevents one player’s optional detour from risking everyone’s haul.

Check these details before queueing

  1. Map condition: read the current condition and any scenario-specific modifiers.
  2. Objective requirements: confirm the item, location, tool, and extraction condition for the Trial, Feat, project, or weekly challenge you selected.
  3. Loadout commitment: bring only what the objective and expected risk justify.
  4. Extraction routes: identify available standard points and check whether a Raider Hatch and Hatch Key fit your plan.
  5. Session timing: remember that standard extraction availability diminishes as the session proceeds.
  6. Update notes: check current rules for free loadouts, map access, rewards, and new Frozen Trail systems.

What older extraction statistics can—and cannot—tell you

The ARC Raiders Dev Team reported that 40% of high-level players in Technical Test 2 in 2025 used hatches, a rate the team considered more frequent than intended. That is test-era design data, not a measurement of live-player behavior in 2026. It is useful for understanding why hatch access and risk tuning have received attention, but it should not be used as a target percentage or proof that hatches are the optimal extraction method.

The beginner decision rule

At every meaningful pause, compare the value already secured with the value you might gain by continuing, then subtract the increased chance of losing everything you are carrying. Leave when the secured value wins. Stay when the objective is still worth the exposure and you have a credible extraction route. This rule scales from a first low-risk scavenging trip to a coordinated Pendola Pass objective, and it remains valid even as gear, maps, and progression systems change.
