Is Bloodborne’s “Native” Port Worth It on Steam Deck?

bbport runs Bloodborne’s CPU code directly but uses a shadPS4-derived graphics path. A Steam Deck HQ test found enough artifacts to question switching from emulation.

For now, probably not. In a hands-on report published October 6, 2026, Steam Deck HQ’s Noah Kupetsky found visible graphical artifacts in bbport and said the experience did not justify switching from emulation. That is a judgment about the tested setup—not a universal result for every Deck or a guarantee about future builds.

What “native” means in bbport

bbport is a Linux project for Bloodborne version 1.09, not an official PC release. Its repository says the game’s x86-64 CPU code runs directly on the PC’s processor without instruction translation. But the project also supplies a custom runtime for selected PS4 system functions, while its graphics path uses a modified, shadPS4-derived video core and shader recompiler. Calling it “native” without that distinction can give the wrong impression: CPU execution is native, but the graphics implementation is not an independent native PC renderer. bbport project repository

The project describes its single-game approach as a way to tailor compatibility work to Bloodborne, including splitting graphics-command decoding and draw recording across threads. That describes its design, not proof of better performance or image quality on every Steam Deck.

Why the October 2026 Deck verdict is cautious

Kupetsky’s October 6 report describes bbport as experimental and playable. In his test, using a legally purchased and dumped game copy, he saw considerable graphical artifacting and did not consider the experience sufficiently better than emulation to recommend switching. This is the most direct published evidence for the title’s verdict, but it is one reviewer’s hands-on assessment rather than a controlled comparison across Deck models and matched settings. The cited report does not establish a verified FPS ranking or a universal result. Steam Deck HQ report

There is a second qualification: shadPS4, the technology underlying bbport’s graphics path, describes itself as an early PS4 emulator. Its maintainers caution, “shadPS4 is early in development, don’t expect a flawless experience.” So emulation is an alternative to try, not a promise of a seamless fallback. shadPS4 project documentation

Recommended Steam Deck settings—and what they do not prove

In its October 3 release notes, bbport recommends FSR 3 and 1280×720 output on Steam Deck. The notes say FSR 4.1.1 models are not included and claim that FSR 4.1.1 costs several milliseconds per frame on the Deck. These are project recommendations and claims, not independent measurements of bbport’s performance. bbport release notes

Valve says Steam Deck runs Windows-only games through Proton and recommends that developers support 1280×800, the Deck’s native resolution, or 1280×720. That gives useful platform context for the project’s 720p recommendation; it does not mean bbport has passed Valve compatibility review or validate its results. Valve’s Proton documentation

How to choose between bbport and emulation

There is no source-supported quantitative winner for every player. The practical choice depends on what matters on your own device:

  • Image stability: Kupetsky reported considerable artifacts in his bbport test. The available report does not provide a matched, controlled artifact comparison against shadPS4.
  • Setup: bbport is built around one game and a custom runtime; shadPS4 is a general PS4 emulator. The cited material does not establish which route is simpler for every Deck owner.
  • Original-game fidelity: bbport directly executes the game’s x86-64 CPU code, but its runtime and graphics path still emulate or implement selected PS4-facing functions. The sources do not establish which option is more faithful overall.
  • Performance and frame pacing: No verified, controlled Steam Deck FPS comparison is available in the cited sources. Test the current builds on your own Deck rather than treating a setting recommendation as a benchmark.
  • Maturity: Both options remain experimental; shadPS4 explicitly warns users not to expect a flawless experience, and bbport’s current Deck guidance comes from its own project releases.

When to use a PlayStation instead

If your priority is playing Bloodborne without relying on these experimental Deck projects, PlayStation is the straightforward alternative. Sony’s US store lists Bloodborne for PS4; that listing identifies the platform and does not mean the game is a Steam Deck product. Bloodborne on the PlayStation Store

What could change this verdict

bbport and shadPS4 are active projects, so artifacts, compatibility, recommended settings, and release status may change. As of October 7, 2026, the case against switching rests on Kupetsky’s October 6 report, not a cross-device benchmark. Revisit the current release notes and recent Deck-specific testing before choosing; a newer, well-documented test could justify a different conclusion.
