Is Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 the Best Game of All Time?

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 makes a compelling all-time-great case through reactive turn-based combat, a distinctive world, emotional storytelling, and integrated music—but “best ever” remains subjective.

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 has a compelling claim to all-time-great status, but no award, sales figure, or critic can settle the question for everyone. Its strongest case is the way responsive turn-based combat, a striking Belle Époque-inspired world, an emotionally ambitious story, and integrated music reinforce one another. Whether that makes it the best game ever depends on what you value in a game.

What does “best game of all time” mean?

There is no universal scoring system for the best game ever. Some players prize combat depth; others care most about narrative, atmosphere, innovation, or how a game stays with them. A useful case for Expedition 33 is therefore not that it wins every possible comparison, but that several of its defining parts work toward a coherent experience.

Recognition and popularity help show that the game reached and impressed many people. They are not proof that it is artistically superior to every other game. The argument for its stature rests more persuasively on the combination of its design and presentation.

Why does its combat stand out?

Expedition 33 keeps turn-based planning while adding real-time defense. Players choose actions strategically, then respond to incoming attacks with timed dodges and parries. That blend gives battles both the deliberation associated with role-playing games and a more immediate execution challenge. Xbox Wire’s Developer Direct feature describes the combat design and quotes Sandfall CEO and creative director Guillaume Broche saying, “We didn’t want the game to just be a pretty face.”

Programmer Tom Guillermin told Unreal Engine that the team drew on role-playing games including Persona, Final Fantasy, and Lost Odyssey, as well as action games such as Sekiro. The result is not simply turn-based combat with an action-game layer pasted on: timing becomes part of how a player carries out a tactical plan.

Character-specific playstyles, mechanics, and skill trees add another strategic layer. Party composition matters because characters do not all approach combat in the same way, giving the player choices beyond selecting a strong attack. That combination of planning, timing, and distinct roles is a central reason the game can appeal to players who want both tactical decision-making and active participation.

How do the setting and premise give the story momentum?

The game is set in Lumière, a fantasy world shaped by French Belle Époque and Art Deco influences. Its central threat is unusually direct: the Paintress marks an age on a monolith each year, and people of that age die. The expedition sets out to stop her. Sega’s publisher description outlines the premise, while Guillermin’s development interview describes the visual blend of fantasy and Art Deco.

A clear, high-stakes objective gives the journey a strong narrative spine, while the distinctive visual influences help the world feel recognisable rather than generic. The story’s emotional ambitions reach beyond the mission itself. GameSpot’s 2025 Game of the Year essay praises its treatment of grief, the value of life, and the difficulty of letting go, along with its writing and performances. That is one outlet’s critical judgment, not a guarantee that every player will respond in the same way.

  • Immersive World: Explore a visually stunning alien planet with breathtaking details and treacherous terrain.

Lead writer Jennifer Svedberg-Yen told The Guardian that the narrative had a “grounding and a basis in truth.” That phrase describes the story’s intended foundation, not a universal reading of its themes. The Guardian interview discusses the writing and the studio’s work.

How do art and music contribute to its identity?

The visual direction and score are not merely decoration around the combat and story; they help establish the game’s character. The Unreal Engine interview explains that the interactive music system uses separate contexts for exploration, battles, cinematics, menus, and dialogue. Music can therefore serve different parts of play rather than functioning only as a continuous background track.

Sandfall Interactive identified Lorien Testard as composer and reported more than 333 million soundtrack track streams on October 8, 2025. That is a studio-reported milestone, not an independently audited audience measure. GameSpot’s review essay also praises the game’s otherworldly visuals and haunting soundtrack; those descriptions are critical opinion, rather than objective measures of artistic quality. Taken together, the sources point to a distinctive audiovisual identity that supports the game’s emotional and fantastical aims.

Measure Reported result What it tells you
The Game Awards 2025 Sega reported 9 awards from 12 nominations on December 12, 2025, across categories including Game of the Year, Best Game Direction, Best Narrative, Best Art Direction, Best Score and Music, Best Performance, Best Independent Game, Best Debut Independent Game, and Best RPG. Recognition at one awards ceremony, shaped by its categories and voting process—not a universal ranking of games.
Worldwide sales, October 2025 Sandfall Interactive reported more than 5 million copies sold on October 8, 2025, five months after release. A dated studio-reported sales milestone.
Worldwide sales, April 2026 Game Developer reported on April 24, 2026, citing Sandfall Interactive, that sales had exceeded 8 million copies. A later, compatible milestone; it should not be collapsed into an undated total. The same report attributed to the studio the claim that the game was Xbox Game Pass’s most-downloaded new third-party release in 2025.
Game of the Year awards tally GameSpot reported on January 21, 2026, that a ResetEra user-maintained tracker counted 436 Game of the Year awards. A dated tally with a stated, user-maintained method—not an official or permanent record.

The award and October 2025 sales figures are in Sega’s December 12, 2025 announcement and Sandfall’s October 8, 2025 post. The later sales milestone appears in Game Developer’s April 24, 2026 report; the tracker tally is covered in GameSpot’s January 21, 2026 report.

So, is it the best game of all time?

Expedition 33 has a persuasive all-time-great case if your priorities include tactical combat that demands real-time reactions, memorable character roles, a distinctive setting, emotional storytelling, and audiovisual direction that feels connected to the rest of the design. GameSpot captured one version of that case by calling it “an all-time classic role-playing game that has just been rediscovered.” That is an editorial assessment, not a settled verdict.

Players who judge games by different standards may put another title first. The awards, sales, and critical praise show that Expedition 33 made an unusually strong impression; they cannot make a subjective ranking objective. Its clearest achievement is that its combat, world, story, and music form a recognisable whole—and that is a serious reason to include it in any conversation about the best games ever made.
