Is Company of Heroes 3 Worth Buying for Solo and Multiplayer Players in 2026?

By VGSources Team 12 min read

Company of Heroes 3 is worth buying if you want demanding tactical real-time battles, faction-based multiplayer, or co-op on PC. It is a less certain purchase for a solo-first player: the North African campaign is the more traditional and consistently satisfying option, while the Italian dynamic campaign has a less convincing strategic layer and was acknowledged by Relic as under-polished at launch.

PC is the safer long-term platform because it continues to receive updates. The PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S editions remain playable, but Relic ended routine console updates in 2024. Steam reception was still Mixed in the October 13, 2026 snapshot, so this is a conditional recommendation rather than a universal one.

Quick verdict: who should buy Company of Heroes 3?

The answer depends more on your preferred mode than on the game’s setting or presentation. Its moment-to-moment battles offer meaningful tactical decisions: flank vehicles to expose side armor, breach occupied buildings, use elevation and line of sight, and move units around changing fronts. Those systems are the strongest reason to play.

Player type Verdict Why
Multiplayer or co-op player on PC Recommended, with qualifications Four factions, online PvP, online co-op, skirmishes, and continuing PC support make the tactical battles easier to revisit.
Solo player who prioritizes real-time missions Generally worthwhile The battles and the North African campaign provide the clearest solo appeal.
Solo player who wants a consistently active grand-strategy map Wait for a sale or more evidence The Italian dynamic campaign’s opposing forces were criticized as too passive, and its strategic layer was not fully polished at launch.
Console player seeking ongoing feature parity Use caution The console editions remain available, but Relic said routine updates would stop; the announced 3.0 update is for PC.
Player expecting a universally acclaimed release Temper expectations Steam’s English reviews were Mixed rather than overwhelmingly positive in the dated snapshot available on October 13, 2026.

In practical terms, buy it for the battles first. Treat the campaign map and future support as separate considerations rather than assuming every part of the package is equally strong.

What is included?

Two different campaign approaches

The solo offering covers campaigns set across North Africa and Italy. The Italian campaign uses a dynamic map in which you manage forces, resources, towns, and supply lines before entering real-time battles. The North African campaign follows a more traditional structure, with a clearer sequence of missions and a more familiar campaign rhythm.

That distinction matters because the campaign map is not just a menu between missions. Your strategic decisions determine where forces move, which locations are attacked, and what resources are available. If you enjoy planning around a map and then executing the plan in tactical combat, the Italian design has an appealing idea. If you mainly want tightly paced missions, its slower strategic layer can feel like an obstacle.

Skirmish and custom battles

Skirmish modes provide a way to practice factions, maps, and tactical systems without progressing through either campaign. They are useful for players who want repeatable battles, experimentation, or offline-style practice, although the exact options and opponent behavior depend on the mode and version available through Steam.

Online PvP and co-op

The Steam listing includes online player-versus-player matches and online co-op. Multiplayer and co-op use four factions: US Forces, British Forces, Wehrmacht, and Deutsches Afrikakorps. That gives the game a clear asymmetrical structure: faction choice affects available units, tactical strengths, and the way you approach objectives rather than simply changing visual themes.

Company of Heroes 3 launched on Steam for PC on February 23, 2023. Steam also lists Steam Workshop support, single-player modes, online PvP, online co-op, and the current system requirements on the product page.

Why the tactical battles are the main attraction

Positioning has concrete consequences

The combat model rewards more than sending the largest group toward an objective. Flanking can expose a vehicle’s side armor, turning a frontal exchange into a favorable attack. Infantry can breach garrisons instead of merely shooting at the building from outside. Elevation changes what units can see and how they can be engaged, while line-of-sight rules make reconnaissance and cover important before a fight starts.

These systems create decisions that are easy to understand but difficult to execute consistently. A unit may be powerful in a frontal attack yet vulnerable when an opponent reaches its flank. A building may protect infantry until a breach turns it into a liability. A high position may look safe but become exposed when the enemy changes approach. The result is a real-time game in which movement, timing, and information matter as much as unit production.

Company Of Heroes 3 Launch Edition With Metal Case
  • Core gameplay players already love from Company of Heroes returns, where players win by outsmarting not out-clicking your opponents.
  • Classic Mechanics have been improved with enhanced systems for cover, flanking, combined arms and richer environmental destruction mechanics.
  • Innovative combat like breaching, verticality tactics, and sandbox focused missions will wow veteran Company of Heroes players.
  • Dynamic Campaign Map mechanics introduce a more replayable campaign experience with long-term strategies and unprecedented choice.
  • Full Tactical Pause lets players control the battlefield with time frozen for ultimate precision.

Why this helps both solo and multiplayer players

In solo play, the mechanics make individual engagements worth paying attention to rather than treating them as routine cleanup. In multiplayer, they provide room for scouting, baiting, coordinated attacks, and counterplay between factions. Players who enjoy learning matchups and improving their control will find more depth here than players who want a low-pressure strategy game that can be won by building a large force and advancing directly.

The trade-off is cognitive load. You must watch several parts of the battlefield, keep track of sight lines, protect vulnerable units, and react when an opponent changes direction. That intensity is the point for tactical players, but it can make the game feel demanding if you prefer slower turn-based planning or a simpler real-time system.

How good is the solo experience?

The North African campaign

The North African campaign is the safer solo recommendation. A PC Gamer retrospective described it as the more traditional campaign, which suits players who want a direct sequence of battles with less reliance on a broad strategic layer. Its value comes from giving the combat systems room to develop through missions rather than asking every encounter to carry the weight of an experimental map design.

That does not mean the campaign eliminates the need to think strategically. You still need to use cover, identify advantageous routes, and preserve units when possible. The distinction is that the surrounding structure is easier to read: the campaign’s primary purpose is to move you from one tactical engagement to the next.

The Italian dynamic campaign

The Italian campaign is more ambitious. Its map asks you to manage forces and supply lines, improve towns, and decide where to apply pressure before launching battles. In theory, this should make the war feel reactive and personal, with your strategic choices shaping the order and context of missions.

The weakness is the behavior of the opposing forces on that map. PC Gamer’s reviewer found that enemies often sat back instead of creating consistently active opposition. That can make the strategic layer feel passive: you may have an interesting set of tools but not enough pressure forcing you to use them. The campaign can therefore alternate between promising planning and long stretches in which the map does not demand much from you.

Relic CEO Justin Dowdeswell later acknowledged the scale problem in a September 16, 2026 PC Gamer interview. He said, “We set out to build the biggest Company of Heroes game ever,” and added, “Yeah, we bit off more than we could chew.” Those comments are useful context for the campaign’s uneven finish, but they are not a guarantee that every weakness has been corrected.

  • Take command in real-time battles and take on a campaign as a general where every decision counts

What solo buyers should expect

  • Expect strong individual battles. Flanking, breaching, elevation, and line of sight create tactical problems that reward active control.
  • Do not assume the two campaigns provide the same experience. The North African campaign is more conventional; the Italian map campaign carries more design risk.
  • Use skirmishes if you want repeatable combat. They let you focus on factions and battlefield decisions without relying on the campaign map.
  • Do not buy solely for a highly reactive grand campaign. The Italian strategic layer has been the most important caveat in the solo recommendation.

How strong are multiplayer and co-op?

Four factions create meaningful variety

US Forces, British Forces, Wehrmacht, and Deutsches Afrikakorps give multiplayer players four distinct starting points. The asymmetry means the learning process is not just about memorizing a single universal build order. You need to understand what your faction can do, what it struggles to answer, and how opponents’ compositions change the value of your units.

Mode or feature What it offers Best suited to
Online PvP Competitive matches against other players using the four listed factions. Players who want matchup learning, adaptation, and long-term mastery.
Online co-op Team-based play against computer-controlled opposition. Friends who prefer coordinated tactics without direct player-versus-player pressure.
Skirmish Repeatable battles for practice and experimentation. Players who want to test units, maps, and approaches at their own pace.
Steam Workshop Community-created content listed by Steam as supported. Players interested in extending the game beyond its standard scenarios.

Team play changes the value of the game

Co-op can make the package more forgiving for a new player. A teammate can cover a weak flank, explain faction choices, or share the pressure of reacting across a large map. It also exposes one of the game’s central demands: communication. Coordinated timing, shared scouting information, and clear responsibility for objectives matter more than simply accumulating units.

Competitive players should be comfortable with a learning curve. The tactical systems reward observation and precise responses, so early matches can feel punishing while you learn when to disengage, where to place support, and how to exploit exposed armor. That difficulty is a reason to keep playing for some players and a reason to avoid the game for others.

What the planned PC update could change

Relic announced update 3.0 for November 5, 2026. The announcement covers multiplayer balance changes aimed especially at larger team games, including economy and artillery adjustments and efforts to reduce massed-vehicle strategies. It also lists new and refreshed maps, visual and audio upgrades, and smarter AI.

Because October 13, 2026 was the latest date represented by the available evidence, those changes were announced rather than released at that point. A buyer should not treat the promised balance, maps, or AI improvements as features already available on that date.

PC versus console: which version is the better buy?

Consideration PC via Steam PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S
Availability Released February 23, 2023, with single-player, PvP, co-op, Workshop support, and listed system requirements. Console editions remain available according to Relic’s 2024 statement.
Ongoing updates Relic continues to announce and deliver PC support; update 3.0 was announced for November 5, 2026. Relic said in 2024 that it would not issue further routine console updates.
Server support Online functionality depends on the PC service and normal network conditions. Relic said regular server maintenance would continue and that critical fixes could still be issued if needed.
Content parity The announced 3.0 content is for PC via Steam. Do not assume parity with later PC maps, balance changes, AI work, or campaign adjustments.
Best reason to choose it You want the longest support horizon and access to ongoing PC changes. You already play on a current console and are satisfied with the version available now.

The console decision is not about whether the game is playable; Relic confirmed that the editions remain available and maintainable. It is about your expectations after purchase. If you want future balance passes, new or refreshed maps, and announced campaign changes, PC is the safer choice. If you prefer couch play and accept a largely fixed feature set, the console version can still make sense.

What do the Steam reviews say?

Steam’s English-language review snapshot accessed on October 13, 2026 showed 62% positive from 13,378 reviews overall, labeled Mixed. Recent English reviews were also Mixed at 56% positive from 221 reviews. These are dated counts, not permanent scores; both percentages and denominators can change as users post new reviews.

The numbers support a cautious reading of the game. They do not show a failed product with no audience, nor do they justify saying that every buyer will be satisfied. The split is consistent with the game’s uneven proposition: players who value the battles and multiplayer can find substantial value, while players expecting a fully polished strategic campaign may focus on its weaknesses.

Reviews are also a poor substitute for choosing the correct platform and mode. A multiplayer player on PC and a campaign-only player on console are making materially different purchases even though they are buying the same game name.

What update 3.0 means for a purchase made now

Announced features

  • Visual and audio upgrades.
  • Smarter AI.
  • Multiplayer balance changes, including economy and artillery adjustments for larger team games.
  • Design changes intended to reduce massed-vehicle strategies.
  • New and refreshed maps.
  • Italian campaign adjustments to map resources, town upgrades, and enemy attack waves.

How to interpret the announcement

The planned Italian campaign changes directly address the map layer’s pressure and pacing. Adjusting resources, town upgrades, and enemy attack waves could make the strategic game more active, but the announcement does not establish how successful those changes will be in practice. The same caution applies to the smarter AI and balance work: they are announced goals until players can use the released update.

The date matters. Update 3.0 was announced for November 5, 2026, while the latest evidence available for this buying decision was from October 13, 2026. If you are buying before November 5, make the decision using the version currently available, not the future feature list. If you are deciding after that date, check the live patch notes and current player reception before assuming every announced change landed as intended.

PC requirements and purchase checks

Check the current Steam requirements

Steam publishes the game’s system requirements on its current product page. Check those requirements against your own CPU, GPU, memory, storage, and operating-system configuration before buying. No independent hardware benchmark is established here, so the published requirements should be treated as the starting compatibility check rather than a promise of a particular frame rate or graphics setting.

Confirm the edition and platform

For a digital purchase, verify that the listing is for the platform you actually use. For a physical query such as a PS5 edition, confirm the exact console, region, edition, stock status, and any program eligibility before paying. The available evidence establishes the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S product category, but not a current retail price, inventory position, or promotion.

Plan for online play

Online PvP and co-op require a functioning network connection and access to the relevant platform service. If multiplayer is your main reason to buy, confirm that your friends are on the same platform ecosystem and can access the same version before purchasing.

A decision guide by player priority

Buy now if battles and multiplayer are your priority

Choose the PC version if you want faction variety, online PvP, co-op, skirmishes, and the best chance of receiving future changes. The tactical systems are substantial enough to support repeated play, and the announced update pipeline gives PC players a longer support horizon.

Buy for solo play if you can accept an uneven campaign structure

Solo buyers who enjoy real-time tactical missions should find a reasonable fit, particularly in the North African campaign and skirmishes. Go in knowing that the Italian campaign’s strategic map may feel passive and less polished than its ambitions suggest. That caveat is central to the purchase, not a minor footnote.

Wait if you want a polished grand campaign above all else

If your ideal game is a highly reactive map in which the enemy constantly attacks, contests territory, and forces difficult strategic choices, waiting for current post-update impressions is sensible. The announced Italian changes are relevant, but they were not yet available in the October 13, 2026 snapshot.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose console only for the current package

A console purchase is reasonable when convenience and existing hardware matter more than future content. Do not buy it expecting routine updates to follow the PC roadmap. Relic’s policy separates the console support horizon from the ongoing PC version.

Final verdict

Company of Heroes 3 is worth buying for multiplayer-focused PC players and for solo players who value tactical battles more than a perfectly active campaign map. Its best ideas are visible every time positioning, armor angles, garrisons, elevation, and line of sight decide an engagement. Four factions, PvP, co-op, skirmishes, and Workshop support give those systems room to matter beyond a single playthrough.

The recommendation weakens for campaign-first buyers who expect the Italian dynamic map to be as polished and reactive as its concept. It also weakens on console for anyone who wants continuing feature parity, because routine updates ended there while PC support continues. Buy the version that matches your mode, platform, and tolerance for an uneven strategic layer rather than relying on the WWII setting alone.
