How to check your PS5 model before ordering
Find the model number on the console
Use the model number printed on your console to determine whether it belongs to the CFI-2000, CFI-7000, or CFI-1000 group. Sony’s compatibility statements are organized by these groups, so the group designation matters more than the marketing name used by a retailer.

- Inspect the console for its printed model number.
- Read the CFI prefix and the first model-group digits.
- Proceed only if the designation is in the CFI-2000 or CFI-7000 group.
- If it is CFI-1000 Digital Edition, stop: Sony does not support disc-based games or media on that group.
If a seller cannot tell you which model group its console or accessory listing applies to, treat the listing as unverified. Do not infer compatibility from the console’s color, storage capacity, retail bundle, or the word “slim”; the documented test is the CFI model group.
What you are actually buying
The drive is a separate accessory
Sony identifies the add-on as the CFI-ZDD1 series and states that it is sold separately. A CFI-2000 Digital Edition console does not automatically include the drive merely because its design allows one to be attached. Check the contents of the particular console bundle and the accessory listing rather than assuming a drive is in the box.
Price, stock, seller and returns are live details
The official support pages establish compatibility and setup, but they do not establish a current price, inventory position, regional availability, or retailer return policy. Check those details at the retailer at the time you buy. A return policy is especially important if you have not yet confirmed your console’s model group.
Use the official product designation when comparing listings
Search for the CFI-ZDD1 series and compare the model designation shown in the listing with Sony’s documentation. Avoid treating an unbranded “PS5 disc drive” description as proof that the accessory is the supported model. The correct accessory still requires a compatible console group and an internet connection during first-time setup.
What to prepare before installation
Installation is a physical replacement of the console’s cover and stand-foot arrangement. Prepare the console and workspace before opening anything.
- Turn the PS5 fully off; do not work on it while it is running or in a rest state.
- Disconnect the AC power cord and all other cables.
- Wait for the console to cool before removing covers.
- Place the console on a flat surface covered with a soft cloth.
- Have the detachable drive, its cover, and the console’s existing cover and stand feet available.
- Ensure the console can connect to the internet after reassembly, because pairing is required during setup.

How to install the PS5 detachable disc drive
1. Shut down, unplug and cool the console
- Turn off the PS5 using the normal power-off command.
- Remove the AC power cord.
- Disconnect the remaining cables from the console.
- Leave the console until it has cooled.
Do not begin by pulling at the cover while the console is warm or still connected to power. Sony’s sequence starts with a powered-off, disconnected and cooled console.

2. Set the console on a protected, level surface
Lay the console on a flat surface with a soft cloth underneath it. The cloth protects the exterior while you work and gives the console a stable base as you remove the specified cover and the short horizontal stand feet.
3. Remove the specified cover and short horizontal stand feet
Follow the illustrated support instructions to identify the cover panel and the short horizontal stand feet that must be removed for the drive installation. The panels use clips and a defined direction of movement. Match the diagram rather than forcing a panel in a direction that feels convenient.
4. Attach the drive and install the replacement cover
Position the CFI-ZDD1 drive as shown in Sony’s diagrams, engage it with the console, and fit the drive cover. Check that the drive and cover sit flush before reconnecting cables. If a clip or edge does not align, stop and consult the illustration instead of applying extra pressure.
5. Reconnect the cables and power on
Reconnect the cables and AC power, then start the console. The physical installation is not the end of the process: the drive and console must be paired during setup.

6. Complete the required internet pairing
Connect the console to the internet and follow the on-screen setup process. Sony states: “Internet connection required to pair disc drive and PS5 console upon set up.” The requirement applies when the drive is first paired with the console, so plan the installation where the PS5 can reach your network.
7. Store the removed parts
Keep the original cover and the removed stand feet in a labeled, safe place. Sony says those parts are needed if you later use the console without the disc drive attached. Do not discard them with the packaging.
Why an internet connection is part of setup
The drive is a physical accessory, but Sony still requires an internet connection to pair it with the PS5 during initial setup. This is a setup condition, not an indication that every disc operation requires a continuous internet connection. The published instruction specifically describes pairing “upon set up.”

Before you start, confirm that the console can get online. If setup cannot complete, first check the basic conditions established by Sony’s instructions:

- The PS5 is connected to the internet during the pairing stage.
- You are following the current illustrated setup sequence rather than relying on a generic third-party installation description.
If your console cannot be connected to the internet at the installation location, postpone the installation until a connection is available. The official requirement is explicit, so an offline first setup should not be treated as an expected alternative.
What discs and media does the drive support?
Sony’s media-support page lists Ultra HD Blu-ray, Blu-ray and DVD formats for compatible consoles, including specified recordable formats. The page is the authority for the exact media list; do not extend it to every disc type or every regional variant that is not listed there.
Read the format details at PlayStation’s guide to playing video and music from discs and USB drives. That page also makes the model limitation clear: the CFI-1000 Digital Edition does not support disc-based games or media.
Disc-based games
On a supported CFI-2000 or CFI-7000 console, the detachable drive is the route Sony documents for adding disc capability to the compatible digital-format hardware. On a CFI-1000 Digital Edition, Sony expressly excludes disc-based games, so attaching the CFI-ZDD1 drive is not a supported upgrade path.
Movie and music discs
The same compatibility boundary applies to physical media. Use the published format list for Ultra HD Blu-ray, Blu-ray, DVD and the specified recordable formats. Do not assume that an unlisted format, unusual recording method or disc from a particular region will work simply because it is physically the same size.

Common buying and installation mistakes
Buying for the wrong Digital Edition
The most consequential mistake is assuming every Digital Edition accepts the same accessory. CFI-1000 Digital Edition is explicitly excluded. Verify the CFI group before paying, especially when buying an older console, a used unit or a listing that omits the model number.

Assuming the drive is included
The CFI-ZDD1 is sold separately. Check both the console bundle contents and the accessory listing so you do not mistake a console-only package for a drive-equipped package.
Starting installation while connected or warm
Sony’s sequence requires powering off, disconnecting cables and allowing the console to cool. Skipping those steps makes the installation contrary to the manufacturer’s instructions.

The cover and stand-foot steps have a specified orientation. Use the diagrams in the official setup page. If a panel does not align, remove it and re-check the illustrated position rather than forcing it.
Discarding the original cover and feet
The removed cover and stand feet are not disposable packaging. Sony says they are needed to use the console without the drive attached, so label and store them.
Expecting offline pairing
The setup requirement is an internet connection to pair the drive and PS5. Arrange network access before you begin; do not treat an inability to connect as evidence that the physical drive is defective.

- Record the console’s printed model number.
- Confirm it belongs to CFI-2000 or CFI-7000.
