What released on October 9, 2026?
Capcom launched Dragon’s Dogma 2: Dark Arisen on October 9, 2026 for PS5, Switch 2, Xbox Series X|S and PC. Capcom describes Dark Arisen as a paid expansion that adds a new story to the March 2024 game. On Switch 2, the main game and expansion are sold together as one package; on PS5, the expansion is offered for the existing game. The underlying game is an action RPG built around real-time fights, travel through a dangerous world, companion management and encounters that can punish unprepared parties. Dark Arisen adds a new region and story, tougher battles, additional progression and 12 Lost Rites dungeons scattered through the existing world. The expansion is therefore more than a cosmetic edition, but your platform choice still determines how comfortably you experience the original campaign as well as the new content.

What the PS5 version does best
A better home-console choice in the available review evidence
The Push Square review tested the European version on PS5 Pro. Its reviewer praised the Norgan region, Dark Arisen’s story and progression, boss encounters and the way new loot supports continued advancement. Those are the parts of the expansion most likely to justify returning to the game rather than treating it as a short add-on.
The review also identified limits. Enemy variety remains restricted, and the Lost Rites dungeons are uneven. Some are substantial explorations, while others are brief combat sequences. That criticism applies to the content itself, not to a particular console, so it is relevant whichever platform you choose.

If you normally play seated at a television and care most about a cleaner image, PS5 is the straightforward recommendation. The available cross-platform observations favor the PlayStation presentation over Switch 2’s downgraded visuals. Because the PlayStation review used PS5 Pro, however, the evidence supports “PS5 Pro looked better in the cited comparison,” not a precise claim that every base PS5 configuration will outperform Switch 2 in every scene.

PS5 also avoids the central Switch 2 compromise: you are not choosing portability in exchange for lower visual detail and longer waits during specific transitions. If your console is permanently connected to a large display, those trade-offs provide little benefit.
What the Switch 2 version does best
Portability without losing the expansion
Switch 2’s defining advantage is that you can play the complete package in handheld mode or on a television. Nintendo’s UK product listing specifies handheld and TV modes, one player on one system and a 49.6 GB download size: Nintendo’s product page.
The single-package approach matters if you are buying the game for the first time. You do not need to assemble the March 2024 base game and the Dark Arisen expansion as separate purchases on this platform. Existing ownership arrangements on PS5 are different because Dark Arisen is an expansion for the game already released there.
The compromises you will notice
The Switch 2 launch review reported longer loading in Pawn rifts and cutscenes, occasional choppy frame rates and greater visibility of those dips when the system is docked. It also found the image visibly downgraded compared with PS5 Pro. The same review considered the port smoother than the original game’s 2024 launch performance on PS5, but that is a historical comparison, not a controlled comparison with the current PS5 build.

That distinction is important. A statement that Switch 2 improves on a 2024 launch experience does not prove that it is technically superior to an updated PS5 version released in 2026. Treat the portability benefit as the reason to choose Switch 2, not as evidence that it is the fastest or sharpest version.
Frame rate, variable mode and frame generation explained
The base target is 30 FPS
Producer Naoto Oyama said the Switch 2 version targets 30 FPS in both handheld and TV modes. Nintendo Life reported the statement from his Famitsu interview on September 19, 2026: Nintendo Life’s report. Do not describe the Switch 2 version as running natively at 60 FPS.
What the settings mean
- Locked 30 FPS: holds the stated target rather than allowing the frame rate to vary.
- Variable frame rate: allows the game to move around its performance range. The launch reviewer generally preferred this option because it felt smoother in play.
- Frame generation: inserts interpolated frames to make motion appear closer to a 60-FPS presentation. It does not turn the game’s underlying 30-FPS simulation into native 60-FPS rendering.
The reviewer found the visual improvement from frame generation modest and noted that it can produce slight ghosting. If image artifacts bother you, begin with variable frame rate and compare it with frame generation in the same area. If steadier motion matters more than occasional interpolation artifacts, frame generation may be worth trying.

What Dark Arisen adds
New story and the Norgan region
Dark Arisen centers on a new story in the Norgan region. The PS5 Pro review considered the region and its narrative compelling, particularly when combined with new boss fights, loot and progression. The Switch 2 review likewise highlighted challenging expansion encounters. These additions are aimed at players who want more demanding content after experiencing the base game, rather than a separate beginner-friendly campaign.

Twelve Lost Rites dungeons
PlayStation Blog announced 12 new Lost Rites dungeons in its June 25, 2026 Capcom Spotlight summary: PlayStation Blog’s announcement. They are distributed through the existing world and do not all offer the same scale. Some are longer crawls with more exploration; others are short combat-focused sequences. That variety can make the expansion feel woven into the original map, but it also explains why the review did not rate every dungeon equally.
Equipment, character creation and the announced update
PlayStation Blog also described rare equipment and additional character-creation options. The same announcement discussed a free update planned for late August that would add more save slots, increase weapon skill slots from four to six and improve performance. The announcement was prospective, so do not assume every item is present in your particular installation without checking the current in-game version and official patch notes.

Choose PS5 when these priorities describe you
- You play almost entirely on a television.
- You prioritize image quality over portability.
- You want the home-console presentation judged more favorably in the available launch comparison.
- You already own the PS5 game and want Dark Arisen as an expansion rather than a second complete package.
- You are comfortable with the qualification that the cited review used PS5 Pro, not base PS5.
For this group, PS5 is the least compromised recommendation. The expansion’s strongest points—Norgan, progression, bosses and loot—are the same content on either platform, so the decision comes down to how much you value the cleaner home presentation and how little you need handheld play.

Choose Switch 2 when these priorities describe you
- You want to continue the game in bed, while travelling or away from the television.
- You are buying for the first time and prefer one package containing the main game and expansion.
- You can accept lower visual quality than PS5 Pro, longer loading in specific transitions and occasional choppiness.
- You understand that the 30-FPS target remains the base, even when frame generation makes motion look closer to 60 FPS.
- You are willing to test variable frame rate and frame generation to decide which artifacts you find less distracting.
Switch 2 is not the choice for maximum technical fidelity. It is the choice for flexibility: the ability to carry a large, demanding action RPG between handheld and docked play while retaining the same campaign and expansion content.

Buying and setup checks before you start
- Confirm the edition. On Switch 2, verify that the listing is Dark Arisen and includes the main game. On PS5, check whether you are buying the base game, the expansion or a bundle that contains both.
- Check storage on Switch 2. Nintendo UK lists a 49.6 GB download. Leave additional free space for installation and updates rather than treating 49.6 GB as the total space your system will need permanently.
- Choose a frame-rate mode deliberately. Start with locked 30 FPS if consistency is your priority. Try variable frame rate if you prefer a less constrained feel, then test frame generation for motion smoothness while watching for ghosting.
- Update before judging performance. The release arrived with ongoing platform updates and an announced late-August performance update. Install the latest available patch before deciding that a reported launch behavior still represents your copy.
- Use the right comparison. If you are deciding between Switch 2 and a base PS5, do not treat PS5 Pro review footage or comments as a definitive measurement of the base console. Display, patch and performance mode can all affect what you see.
Is the game itself worth your time?
Dark Arisen is a good reason to return if you already enjoyed Dragon’s Dogma 2’s combat, exploration and party systems. Its new story, Norgan region, difficult bosses, rare equipment and 12 Lost Rites dungeons add meaningful goals. The uneven dungeon quality and limited enemy variety mean the expansion is not a complete reinvention, but the reviewed progression and encounter design provide enough substance for fans who want more high-level challenges.
New players should decide based on tolerance for friction. This is not a recommendation for someone seeking a consistently smooth, technically pristine action game on every screen. The appeal lies in emergent fights, exploration and building a party capable of handling difficult situations. Switch 2 adds the friction of longer loading and visual compromises; PS5 keeps the experience focused on the home-console presentation, with the evidence here specifically favoring PS5 Pro.
Verdict
Buy the PS5 version if you want the best-supported home-console option and can play on a television. Buy the Switch 2 version if portability and the all-in-one package outweigh image quality, loading time and occasional frame-rate instability. Neither choice is universally superior: PS5 is the performance-first recommendation based on PS5 Pro evidence, while Switch 2 is the convenience-first recommendation for handheld players.
