Yes. The Japanese PS5 version of Dying Light: The Beast was modified from the overseas version. Distributor Spike Chunsoft says the changes generally soften violent depictions, including removing certain organ, dismemberment and nudity content. The game was released in Japan with a CERO Z rating, not banned.
What changed in the Japanese version?
Spike Chunsoft’s official Japanese product page lists these differences from the overseas version:
- Depictions of organs were removed from zombie models and map objects.
- Some female infected models were changed.
- Facial and torso dismemberment models were removed.
- Nudity was removed.
The distributor describes the overall effect as a softening of violent depictions. It does not publish a scene-by-scene list or say that all gore or violence was removed, so the disclosed edits should not be read as a complete inventory.
Is the game banned in Japan?
No. The Japanese version was released with a CERO Z rating, which is for adults aged 18 and over. The Japanese PlayStation Store listing says CERO Z content is not sold to people under 18 and describes a credit-card requirement for purchase. The available official information supports describing this as a released game with content edits, not a ban.

Which version can you buy in Japan?
The Japanese release described by Spike Chunsoft is a PS5 download-only version. Keep it distinct from the physical PS5 editions Techland announced later:
| Detail | Japanese release | Techland physical-edition announcement |
|---|---|---|
| Format | PS5 download-only, according to Spike Chunsoft. | Three physical PS5 editions, according to Techland’s announcement. |
| Content and rating | Spike Chunsoft lists the Japanese version’s edits; it is rated CERO Z. | Techland says the Definitive Edition includes post-launch updates. The announcement does not establish whether its physical editions are the Japanese edited version or state a Japan-specific rating. |
| Availability | Listed on the Japanese product page and PlayStation Store. | Techland announced a preorder window from September 18 through October 16, 2026, and says regional distribution, tax and shipping limits mean physical editions will not be available in some regions. |
The physical-edition announcement is not evidence that a Japanese physical copy of the edited release is available. Check the edition and region details before buying.
Can Japanese and overseas players play co-op together?
Spike Chunsoft says Japanese players can play co-op seamlessly with friends using the overseas version. That is the distributor’s compatibility statement; its product page does not specify technical or platform caveats.

The official materials establish specific changes to the Japanese release and its CERO Z rating. They do not establish a general rule for all CERO Z games or explain a broader censorship policy. For this title, “censored” is a fair shorthand for the disclosed version differences, but “modified” is the more precise description.
