Fallout 76 supports play between its Steam and Microsoft PC versions, but that is not broad crossplay between PC, Xbox, and PlayStation. In remarks reported on October 1, 2025, Production Director Bill LaCoste said crossplay was “never a no” while describing crossplay and cross-progression for the existing game as a huge technical lift. He did not announce a plan or release date.
What Fallout 76 crossplay supports now
Bethesda says players on the Steam and Microsoft versions of Fallout 76 for PC can play together across all game modes. This is cross-client play within the PC platform family.

Bethesda’s platform list includes Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PCs that meet the game’s system requirements. That list establishes availability, not that players on those different platform families share multiplayer. It does not establish crossplay between PC and console, or between Xbox and PlayStation.

What “It’s never a no” means
Insider Gaming reported on October 1, 2025 that Fallout 76 Creative Director Jonathan Rush and Production Director Bill LaCoste discussed crossplay at a New York City media event promoting the Burning Springs expansion. LaCoste said, “It’s never a no, right?” He also said decisions about features like these are usually made early in development and that adding crossplay or cross-progression to Fallout 76 at that point was “a huge technical lift.”

LaCoste expressed understanding of players’ interest and said he would like to use the same character on Steam, Xbox, or PlayStation. Crossplay and cross-progression are different
- Crossplay means players on different platforms can play together. Bethesda’s cited support detail confirms this for Steam and Microsoft PC players, not for PC and consoles or across console families.
- Cross-progression means carrying a character or game progress between platforms. LaCoste discussed it alongside crossplay as a technically difficult addition; the report does not say it is available.
That distinction matters if you are choosing where to play: the documented PC-client compatibility answers whether Steam and Microsoft PC players can join one another. It does not answer whether a character can move between PC and console.

How to check your situation
- If everyone is on PC: check whether each person is using Steam or Microsoft’s PC version. Bethesda says those clients can play together across all modes.
- If your group spans PC and console, or Xbox and PlayStation: do not assume the PC-client support applies. The cited Bethesda support pages do not confirm those combinations.
- If you want to continue one character on another platform: treat that as cross-progression, separate from multiplayer compatibility. LaCoste described it as a difficult addition, and the report announced no release plan.
