No—not for new customers. As of August 18, 2026, the U.S. Epic Games Store lists Grand Theft Auto V Enhanced as a paid Windows PC game for $29.99. The purchase includes both the Enhanced and Legacy PC versions.
GTA V was temporarily free to claim on Epic in May 2020. Anyone who claimed it during that promotion keeps the digital license on the Epic account used at the time. That old giveaway, however, does not make GTA V permanently free for new users.
Is GTA 5 free on the Epic Games Store right now?
No. The current U.S. Epic Games Store listing shows Grand Theft Auto V Enhanced as a paid Windows PC game priced at $29.99 when checked on August 18, 2026. Regional prices, taxes, currencies, promotions, and availability can differ.
The listing includes:
- Grand Theft Auto V Enhanced
- Grand Theft Auto V Legacy
- GTA V’s Story Mode
- GTA Online
GTA V is not currently a permanently free-to-play title in the Epic Games free-games catalog. The important distinction is that the game was once free to claim during a limited promotion, not that it remains free to everyone.

When was GTA 5 free on Epic?
Epic gave away GTA V as part of its 2020 Mega Sale promotion. The offer ended on May 21, 2020, at 11 a.m. Eastern Time, according to Epic’s official promotion announcement.
Users who claimed the game before the deadline received a digital license attached to their Epic account. Epic’s store policy says claimed giveaway games remain in the account library after the promotional period ends. This is why old articles, videos, screenshots, and existing Epic libraries can make GTA V appear to be free today.
The accurate summary is:
GTA V was free to claim during a past Epic promotion, and it remains available at no extra charge to people who claimed it. It is paid for new customers.
Can you still claim the 2020 free copy?
No. The original giveaway has ended, and there is no reusable code or official archive page that lets new users redeem it now. If you did not claim GTA V during the promotional window, you must purchase the current Epic listing or choose another authorized PC storefront.

Do not trust “free GTA 5 download” pages, account marketplaces, or unofficial giveaway links. They may expose you to malware, stolen accounts, fraudulent entitlements, or violations of platform terms.
Epic periodically offers other free games, but that does not mean GTA V is scheduled to return. Epic’s support documentation explains that free-game promotions rotate and that support does not have advance information about upcoming giveaways.
How to check whether you already own GTA V
If you think you claimed GTA V in 2020, check the account before buying it again:
- Open the Epic Games Store or Epic Games Launcher.
- Sign in to the Epic account used during the giveaway.
- Open Library and search for Grand Theft Auto V.
- Reset library filters if the game does not appear.
- Restart the Epic Games Launcher.
- Clear the launcher cache if the Enhanced version is still missing.
- Check the Epic account’s transaction history for the original claim or purchase.
A common cause of missing games is being signed into a different Epic account. Separate login methods can sometimes lead to separate accounts—for example, typing a Gmail address and password directly versus choosing the Google sign-in button. Epic’s troubleshooting guidance also covers the “Your account doesn’t own this game” error.

Is GTA 5 Enhanced free?
Enhanced is free for existing GTA V owners. Epic and Rockstar describe the Enhanced version as a free upgrade for people who already own GTA V on PC. This is an owner benefit, not a new-user giveaway.
| Your situation | What applies |
|---|---|
| You claimed or purchased GTA V previously | GTA V Enhanced is available as a free upgrade. |
| You never owned GTA V | You must buy the current Epic product. |
| You buy GTA V Enhanced now | The purchase includes both Enhanced and Legacy. |
If you own the older Legacy edition, that ownership should provide access to Enhanced through the supported upgrade path. If it does not appear, use the library, cache, account, and transaction checks above.
What do you need to play GTA 5 through Epic?
Buying through Epic does not remove Rockstar’s PC authentication requirements. You need:

Enhanced is the better choice for a newer gaming PC, while Legacy is the fallback for older hardware. Rockstar notes that requirements can change as the game and downloadable content are updated.
GTA V Enhanced
| Minimum | Recommended | |
|---|---|---|
| Operating system | Windows 10, build 1909 or newer | Windows 11 |
| Processor | Intel Core i7-4770 or AMD FX-9590 | Intel Core i5-9600K or AMD Ryzen 5 3600 |

| Storage | 105 GB SSD | 105 GB DirectStorage-compatible drive |

GTA V Legacy
- Operating system: 64-bit Windows 10

- Memory: 4 GB RAM
- Graphics: NVIDIA 9800 GT 1 GB or AMD HD 4870 1 GB
- Storage: 125 GB
Enhanced requires a substantially newer graphics card and an SSD. If your PC cannot meet those requirements, check the Legacy specifications before buying or installing. Existing owners may benefit from having both versions available, but installing both can require additional storage.

Story Mode, GTA Online, and the meaning of the package
The Epic product is a GTA V package containing both the single-player Story Mode and GTA Online. It is not accurate to describe the listing as merely a free multiplayer client.
Online access requires Rockstar authentication and an internet connection. Optional in-game purchases, future online content, and the continued availability of individual online features should not be assumed to be included forever or at no additional cost.
