Which MCC modes support cross-play?
Xbox console and PC players can play together in eligible online modes. Halo Support says cross-play happens automatically; its Quick Start Guide describes playing with a friend on PC while you play on an Xbox console.
The key exception is Campaign: Halo Support states that “Campaign and Campaign Playlists currently cannot use cross-play.” That restriction means the collection is not cross-platform for every mode, even though eligible online play is.
How to invite a friend on another platform

Add each other as friends on the Xbox network. An Xbox network account is required for online play on every supported platform.

Launch MCC and use the in-game Roster to invite your friend. The Quick Start Guide includes Roster and invitation instructions for both console and PC.

If you close and restart MCC, send the invite again. Halo Support says the invitation needs to be repeated after restarting the game.

- It may say "promotional copy not for resale" on cover but it is legal to sell in worldwide. It was removed from Xbox One Console combo.
These are the terms Halo Support lists; check its current requirements if you are setting up play later, since subscription names and terms can change.
Is cross-save the same as cross-play?
No. Cross-play lets people on different platforms play together; cross-save concerns whether game data carries between platforms. Halo Support says most data transfers among Xbox consoles, the Xbox app for Windows PC, and Steam, but mid-mission checkpoints and some in-progress playlist data are exceptions. That data transfer does not enable cross-platform Campaign co-op.
Does it matter whether the PC copy is on Steam or the Xbox app?
Halo Support’s requirements and update notes refer to Steam and Microsoft Store/Xbox app PC versions, and Steam’s listing labels MCC as supporting cross-platform multiplayer. The available official guide confirms Xbox-console-to-PC cross-play but does not enumerate every possible pairing between PC storefronts. Whichever PC version you use, the Xbox network account requirement still applies.

Does a recent update change the Campaign limitation?
No change to that limitation is established by the latest update information cited here. Halo Support’s September 17, 2025 update notes say a cross-platform matchmaking issue affecting Xbox PC and Microsoft Store app versions was addressed, with a download also required on Xbox consoles and Steam. That is matchmaking maintenance, not a stated change to Campaign cross-play; the Quick Start Guide continues to list Campaign and Campaign Playlists as unable to use cross-play.
Which version should you buy?
Choose the version for the platform you play on; the cross-play feature is between Xbox consoles and PC in eligible online modes, not a substitute for owning the game on your platform. Xbox’s MCC page lists console and PC ways to play. Check the current edition and availability there before purchasing.
