Helldivers 2 launched on Xbox Series X|S on August 26, 2025, with PlayStation Publishing LLC named as its publisher in Xbox’s product information. That makes it the first PlayStation-published game to launch on Xbox Series X|S according to the announcement framing. The official pages reviewed establish this release, but do not provide a complete history of PlayStation-published games across every Xbox platform.
Why Helldivers 2’s Xbox release is unusual
PlayStation announced Helldivers 2 for PS5 and Steam in September 2023, with a February 8, 2024 release date. Xbox Wire later announced that the game would arrive on Xbox Series X|S on August 26, 2025. Xbox’s product information identifies PlayStation Publishing LLC as the publisher, while PlayStation’s own game page lists Xbox alongside PS5 and PC.
The significance is the pairing of platform and publisher: a game carrying PlayStation’s publishing label launched on a direct console competitor. The careful version of the “first” claim is that Helldivers 2 was the first PlayStation-published game to launch on Xbox Series X|S, as framed in the Xbox release announcement—not a verified claim about every PlayStation-published title ever released on any Xbox system.
What kind of game is Helldivers 2?
Helldivers 2 is a third-person cooperative shooter built around squads of up to four players. Players take on shared missions, choose customizable loadouts and call in stratagems during combat. Xbox Wire describes the larger Galactic War as a real-time metagame in which players cooperate to complete operations and liberate planets. Stratagems include limited-use weapons, reinforcements and support, called in with sequence codes.

Xbox release, cross-play and player count
Xbox Wire announced the Series X|S release date as August 26, 2025, and said cross-play was available across all platforms. That means players can squad up across Xbox, PS5 and PC; the cited announcement does not establish cross-save or save transfer between platforms.
Sony Interactive Entertainment reported more than 22.9 million players across PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC as of August 9, 2026. This is Sony’s reported player total, not a sales figure, concurrent-player count or claim about unique active players.

Ways to play and platform caveats
The game is available on Xbox Series X|S, PS5 and PC. Sony announced on August 12, 2026 that Helldivers 2 would join the PlayStation Plus Game Catalog. Sony’s announcement says catalog availability can vary over time, by country or region, and by plan, so check the local catalog for current access.
On PS5, PlayStation’s game page says PS Plus is required for online play. The Xbox Wire release announcement does not establish the current Xbox online-service requirement. Current regional prices, subscription costs and platform-specific performance differences are not established by the cited official announcements, so they should be checked directly for the platform and region in question.
