Yes, generally—but not automatically. CurseForge is a legitimate mod-hosting platform and is usually a safer choice than an anonymous mirror, random forum, Discord attachment, or ad-filled download site. However, no platform can guarantee that every uploaded file is harmless. Download from official CurseForge project pages or the official app, verify the game and version, reject suspicious extras, and keep your own security protections enabled.
“Safe” also has several meanings: a mod can be free of malware but still violate a server’s rules, expose privacy concerns, break a save, or have licensing restrictions.
Why CurseForge is generally safer
CurseForge is an established distribution platform operated by Overwolf. Its project pages provide authorship, file history, version information, changelogs, compatibility details, reporting tools, and a more identifiable source than a random download page.
CurseForge says hosted files pass through automated processing, security checks, and, where necessary, manual review. For Minecraft files, its described process includes decompiling submitted .jar archives, calculating hashes for classes, running static-analysis tools, escalating suspicious files for deeper analysis, and rejecting or manually reviewing files considered dangerous. These are meaningful safeguards, but they are CurseForge’s stated controls—not an independently audited guarantee that malicious code can never pass through.
The important exception: the June 2023 Fractureiser incident
In June 2023, attackers used compromised or attacker-controlled creator accounts to upload infected Minecraft Java files. The malware, known as Fractureiser, targeted Java .jar files, could spread to other Java archives, and was capable of stealing sensitive information. Independent technical reporting from Bitdefender and Kaspersky documented the threat.
CurseForge reported that affected files were removed and that additional scanning and moderation safeguards were introduced. It also published detection and cleanup guidance. The incident does not support saying that every current CurseForge download is infected or that CurseForge is unusable. It does demonstrate why a trusted platform, a popular author, and antivirus software are not absolute guarantees.
What “safe” means
Malware safety
A Minecraft Java mod is normally executable Java code. A legitimate .jar is not automatically a virus, but it can run code when loaded. A malicious mod could modify files, download additional payloads, steal credentials, or infect other archives.

Account safety
A compromised mod could potentially target Microsoft or Minecraft credentials, browser cookies, Discord tokens, saved passwords, cryptocurrency-wallet data, or active sessions. The Fractureiser incident made this a demonstrated risk rather than a theoretical one.
Privacy and the app
The official CurseForge download page offers both a standalone app and an Overwolf version. The app can simplify installation, updates, version filtering, and modpack management, but it does not replace security judgment. Some users may prefer the standalone option because they want fewer overlays, advertisements, or background services. Do not treat CurseForge Premium as a security upgrade; the official page presents it as an optional subscription for features such as ad removal and creator support. Game rules and bans
A malware-free mod can still be prohibited on a multiplayer server or incompatible with an anti-cheat system. CurseForge/Overwolf says its official app will not get users banned, but that company statement does not guarantee that every individual mod is allowed on every server. Licensing
Downloading a project does not automatically give you permission to reupload, monetize, modify, or redistribute it. Read the project’s license and attribution requirements.

Direct downloads are different from imported files
CurseForge says files downloaded directly through its website or app receive scanning and security checks. That does not mean every file imported into the app has received the same treatment. A ZIP sent through Discord, email, Google Drive, a forum, or a friend should remain an untrusted file even if the CurseForge app is used to import it.
Likewise, a link in a project description that redirects to an unknown file host should not be treated as equivalent to a file hosted and downloaded directly through CurseForge. Prefer the project’s own Files or Versions section.
How to download CurseForge mods safely
- Use the official source. Start at
curseforge.comor the official CurseForge app. Avoid shortened URLs, search-ad download buttons, random mirrors, and unsolicited attachments. - Confirm the game and edition. Minecraft Java mods and Bedrock add-ons use different formats and installation paths. Do not install a Java
.jarinto Bedrock. - Match the exact version and loader. Check the Minecraft version and whether the project requires Forge, Fabric, NeoForge, or another loader.
- Inspect the project page. Look for a consistent author identity, history, changelog, support information, and plausible release pattern. These signals reduce risk but do not prove a file is clean.
- Prefer direct project downloads. CurseForge says its website and app scan directly downloaded files. Be more cautious with externally supplied packs and files.
- Do not run unrelated software. Stop if a mod requires a random
.exe, browser extension, password-protected archive, “verification” utility, credential prompt, or command pasted into PowerShell, Terminal, or Command Prompt. - Never disable protection to install a mod. Keep your operating system, Java runtime, launcher, and security software updated.
- Back up saves first. Backups protect against malware, incompatible updates, crashes, corrupted worlds, and unwanted file changes.
- Install gradually. Add a few mods at a time and record what changed. This makes compatibility problems and suspicious behavior easier to isolate.
- Use independent scanning when appropriate. A reputable local scanner adds a layer of defense, but antivirus is not conclusive: Fractureiser was reported to evade many commercial antivirus products.
Red flags: when to stop
- An “urgent update” is announced only through Discord or social media.
- A new account claims to represent a well-known project.
- The file is reuploaded or renamed without a credible project history.
- The archive is password-protected without a clear, trusted reason.
- A mod that normally needs only a
.jar, package, add-on folder, or resource pack demands an executable installer. - The instructions tell you to disable Windows protections or antivirus.
- The download requests Microsoft, Discord, browser, or other account credentials.
- The page uses shortened links, suspicious redirects, fake buttons, or excessive pop-ups.
- A modpack arrives privately or from an unknown file host.
- Files appear in unrelated folders, browser settings change, or Java archives are modified unexpectedly.
What to do if you already launched a suspicious mod
- Disconnect the computer from the internet if active compromise is suspected.
- Stop running the mod and do not continue logging into sensitive accounts on that machine.
- Run a full scan with updated security software.
- If Minecraft Java files from the 2023 incident period may be involved, follow CurseForge’s historical detection guidance.
- Using a separate clean device, change important passwords, revoke active sessions, and enable multifactor authentication.
- Contact Microsoft, Discord, financial services, or other relevant providers if their credentials may have been exposed.
- For confirmed or persistent compromise, consider professional incident response or a clean operating-system reinstall.
The historical Fractureiser guidance is particularly relevant to Windows and Linux systems affected by that campaign. It should not be interpreted as proof that Macs are immune to all malicious mods.
Minecraft Java, Bedrock, modpacks, and other games
Minecraft Java Edition
This is the highest-profile risk category because the Fractureiser campaign targeted Java .jar files. Java mods are executable software, so assess them accordingly. A later release can become risky if an author account is compromised, even when earlier releases were legitimate.

Minecraft Bedrock Edition
Bedrock add-ons, resource packs, and Marketplace content are not interchangeable with Java mods. Identify the edition before downloading, and use the appropriate official project and installation path.
Modpacks
A modpack contains many files, configurations, overrides, and sometimes scripts or custom installers. Prefer its official project page. Review any warnings shown during import, and do not assume that importing a ZIP through CurseForge means CurseForge verified every file inside it.
Other supported games
Risk varies by title and file format. A World of Warcraft addon, Sims 4 package, and Minecraft Java mod do not have identical capabilities or security profiles. Minecraft’s 2023 malware history should not be generalized to every CurseForge category.

For Minecraft, Modrinth is a major alternative, while Prism Launcher is a third-party instance and mod-management tool. Some creators publish on both platforms, but project availability and workflows differ. There is not enough evidence here to declare one universally safer through a current, apples-to-apples security audit.

Both established repositories generally provide more provenance, project metadata, and moderation than random mirrors when used through their official channels. Neither is infallible. Manual installation can reduce launcher dependence, but it does not make the underlying mod code safer and can make version checks, updates, provenance, and rollback harder. Prism Launcher also issued a historical warning about the 2023 CurseForge incident.

Final verdict
CurseForge is generally one of the safer places to download mods, especially through its official website or app. It is not a guarantee that every upload is harmless, and the 2023 Fractureiser incident proves why platform trust must be combined with user caution.
Use official project pages, match the game and version, avoid external and unsolicited files, reject unexplained executables or commands, maintain backups and multifactor authentication, and treat Minecraft Java mods as software—not harmless documents.
